Development for Naval Point
LESS THAN adequate facilities at
Naval Point has spurred the city
council into developing the area –
and it’s looking for public input.
The Naval Point Development
Plan includes making improvements
and upgrades at Magazine
Bay, Lyttelton Recreation Reserve
and the public boat ramp.
The upgrades have been a long
time coming, with increasing
demand on the current facilities
as the size of organisations using
them continue to grow.
Naval Point and Magazine
Bay is home to Naval Point
Club Lyttelton and Coastguard
Canterbury. The city council is
already working with these and
other community groups and
organisations in the development
of the plan.
The facilities are also used by
many others for recreational
water sports including power
boats, trailer sailors, dinghies,
windsurfers, wakas, stand-up
paddle boarders and swimmers.
As a result, the city council
has opened up consultation so
the public can have a say on the
development plan for the area.
The city council wants a better
understanding of how the area
is currently being used and what
the public would like to see in

used to create a development
plan, which will then go out for
consultation once the city council
design team have formulated
an idea for its future use.
Consultation on the first
stage of the development is
open until May 30.

GRANT EXTENSION
THe city council has approved
the extension of a heritage
grant for a year on the former
Lyttelton Harbour Board
building. The $333,548 grant
was originally approved for 18
months and should have been
finished in April, however,
the extent of the damage and
design plan needed more
work than originally planned
and the build started to run
behind schedule. The city
council had to approve the
extension or the grant would
be taken away.
HEALTH HUB TRUSTEES
THe trustees have been
appointed to the Akaroa
Health Hub They are Rik
Tainui, ​Gordon Boxall,
Gretchen Foster, Mike Norris,
Stewart Sinclair, Peter Young
and Pam Richardson. As
work towards the rebuild
of the hospital gets closer,
an independently chaired
appointments panel selected
seven trustees to take over
the fundraising and future
planning and development
of the hospital. have been
appointed. These trustees
will have these positions for
two years before either being
reappointed or standing down
to make way for new trustees.
