The group has identified an urgent need for tsunami evacuation planning with a focus on community education. Redcliffs Residents Association secretary Pat McIntosh said creating the group and a plan was important for the area. “Of course the recent tsunami and evacuation is fresh in everyone’s minds and this area is vulnerable so there is a pressing need to improve the plans for such an event and ensure that the whole community understands what to do in the event of another warning and need to evacuate the coastal area,” Dr McIntosh said. The group is working with Civil Defence and Emergency Management to work out evacuation routes for people in Redcliffs to use in the case of an emergency, whether it be a fire, flood, tsunami, earthquake or other disasters. • Anyone who would like to get involved in the emergency response group should email redcliffs. ra@gmail.com for more information. Ripapa Island building to be dismantled • By Bridget Rutherford RIPAPA ISLAND’S damaged Fort Jervois workshop building will be “sensitively” dismantled next week – but it is not known when the island will reopen to the public. The corrugated iron and timber building was deemed irreparable by engineers and historians. Its walls were blown out during a storm in 2014 following Cyclone Ita. Department of Conservation Christchurch operations manager Andy Thompson said eight people would go over late next week to do the work, which would take about two days. He said they would remove the cladding from the outside of the building and it would be winched over. The rotten timber will be burnt on the island, while recyclable material would be helicoptered away, he said. Ripapa Island is a former pa site and was later used as a quarantine station, prison and coastal defence centre. It has been closed to the public since the September 2010 earthquake. Mr Thompson said originally it was hoped once the workshop was removed, the island could be reopened. But two months ago it was discovered the island’s wharf was badly earthquake-damaged, he said. It was not yet known whether it could be repaired, but Mr Thompson said it would be costly. He said the other buildings also needed restoration, but it was unknown when that could happen because DoC needed to fund it. “It’s not a $10,000 project, it’s closer to a $1 million project,” he said. “We’re always looking for opportunities and we’re open to ideas and suggestions and open to working with others.” PROGRESS: The workshop building on Ripapa Island will be dismantled next week after it was deemed irreparable. From chopping wood to serving dinner, brigade members have been doing the dirty work for a good cause. They have been raising money for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand as part of the Sky Tower Challenge. The team leaves for Auckland tomorrow to take part in the gruelling challenge, carrying 25kg of gear up 51 flights of stairs and 1103 individual steps at the Sky Tower on Saturday. The team aimed to raise $6000 for the cause, but have more than doubled their goal, with the total currently sitting at $13,871.97. Another community meeting with police unlikely • By Caitlin Miles IT’S UNLIKELY another meeting will be held between Lyttelton police and the community, in spite of what the community board say. After months of concerns from Lyttelton residents over the lack of policing in the community, a meeting was held in March to clarify the crime rate in the community and answer questions from residents. About 25 people attended, including members of the Banks Peninsula Community Board, community patrol team and local MPs. In the community board’s agenda, it was mentioned the “meeting was not well-attended” and questioned if another meeting could be held between police and the community. Community board chairwoman Christine Wilson said if there was a need for another meeting it would be considered. She was “disappointed” more people did not attend the first one. However, Sergeant Dave Knowles said he didn’t think the police would be interested in another meeting so soon. “I don’t see that police would be that interested in doing another meeting . . . it was up to them (the community) if they wanted to attend for whatever reason,” he said. Resident Paul Dietsche, who has been campaigning for more police coverage, said the turn out was low because it was “poorly advertised” and didn’t give people enough time in advance to diary it and arrange to attend. “If the community board step up and host it and plan it well in advance, I think more people would go. I hope more people would,” he said. The Banks Peninsula Community Board has requested city council staff provide information on the possibility of using the site on Gladstone Quay for temporary parking until another use for the site has been decided. The community board has also asked city council staff to look into the possibility of creating angle parking on Exeter St. RESERVE FUNDING The Drayton Reserve Stream Enhancement programme has received funding towards the park’s restoration. The Christchurch West Melton Zone Committee approved $2225 to go to the programme. This particular project aims to improve the ecological functioning of the stream and surrounding landscape. TRUST FORMING THe Birdlings Flat community is setting up a formal trust to run and manage the newly-repaired community centre. Members of the trust will be in charge of managing the building and are interested in hearing from groups across the peninsula interested in being involved.
