POLICE HAVE a good line of<br />
inquiry into identifying a man<br />
who tried to abduct a young girl<br />
in Governors <strong>Bay</strong> on Thursday.<br />

Worner said police have reviewed<br />
CCTV footage from the area<br />
which has given them an idea of<br />
who they are looking for.<br />
The girl fought off a man who<br />
tried to abduct her in the Governors<br />
<strong>Bay</strong> Hotel car park at about<br />
4.20pm.<br />
The incident involved a man described<br />
as European, in a red car,<br />
possibly a sedan. The girl’s mother<br />
told <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> News her<br />
daughter fled her attacker.<br />
Governors <strong>Bay</strong> School board<br />
of trustees chairwoman Amanda<br />
Derry said they spoke to the family<br />
on Thursday and are supporting<br />
them.<br />
“The person responsible should<br />
come forward and get the help<br />
they need before we come and<br />
knock on their door, which will<br />
happen,” Detective Senior Sergeant<br />
Worner said.<br />

CLIFF FACES in Akaroa are<br />
being monitored by city council<br />
staff after residents expressed<br />
concern over their condition.<br />
They alerted<br />
members of the<br />
Banks Peninsula<br />
Community<br />
Board to their<br />
concerns over the<br />
state of the cliffs<br />
on Beach Rd behind<br />
the Akaroa<br />
Fire Station and<br />
opposite the Akaroa Lighthouse.<br />
The condition of the seawall has<br />
also been called into question.<br />
However, city streets maintenance<br />
manager Mark Pinner,<br />
said the slopes behind the<br />
lighthouse have been checked by<br />
the city council on “a number of<br />
occasions.<br />
Community board chairwoman<br />
Christine Wilson said,<br />
in her personal opinion, concern<br />
about rockfall is something to<br />
take seriously.<br />

“Since the earthquakes when<br />
rockfall concerns are raised it is<br />
important to get them fixed as<br />
quick as possible, it can be quite<br />
concerning,” she said<br />
Mr Pinner said loess faces are<br />
“fairly resilient” but they are<br />
prone to natural weathering and<br />
waterlog from rainfall and they<br />
are “maintained as needed.”<br />
He said the city council is<br />
aware of the erosion of the seawall<br />
near the fire station.<br />
“It is currently being<br />
monitored. Council’s structural<br />
engineers are inspecting and<br />
monitoring the wall, more so<br />
after large tidal events, and preparing<br />
designs for remediation,”<br />
Mr Pinner said.<br />

water quality?<br />
Look a little deeper at the<br />
action being taken to improve<br />
our precious water.<br />
This year, there are new requirements on farmers<br />
to limit the effects of farming on water quality.<br />
The majority of farmers are already doing the<br />
right thing, but more needs to be done to truly<br />
improve our precious water.<br />
We are working with farmers so that they know<br />
exactly what they need to do. It will take time<br />
for these improvements to have an effect on our<br />
water quality and quantity, but we’re off to a<br />
good start.<br />
