Crew’s success draws young dancers
ANDREW KING
Zion Studios has seen a huge
increase in students after its
recent success at the World
Hip-Hop Championships in
the Caribbean.
The Papanui hip-hop dance
studio’s adult team placed
second after winning the
national competition held in
Martinique.
Now aspiring dancers are
flocking to the classes to get
involved.
Manager Carissa Crow said
the roll normally sits around
100 students.
“We currently have 220
enrolled. Around an extra 120
that we are used to,” she said.
Championships in the Caribbean.
And it is not just the kids
looking to get into hip-hop
dancing.
“We have quite a few adult
enrolments on the back of our
adult crew going overseas and
doing so well,” she said.
The trouble with a number
of people wanting to get
involved is finding enough
teachers to get the classes
grooving.
“I have started an internship
programme where we train
year 12 and 13 students to be
teachers. I have two from last
year now teaching and four
more coming through,” she
said.
The studio is keen to defend
its national dance title again
this year with six crews
heading to Wellington in July.
St Andrew’s students make Olympiad teams
ANDREW KING
Two St Andrew’s College
students have been selected for
New Zealand Olympiad teams.
Each Olympiad team is made
up of four students from around
the country to compete in a
chosen field of study.
Year 13 student Ellena Black
was the only South Island
student selected in the New
Zealand chemistry Olympiad
team, the other three are from
Macleans College in Auckland.
She will leave on July 17 to
attend training in Auckland
and then off to Georgia for the
competition on July 22.
Her chemistry teacher, John
French, has helped her with
concepts for the assignments
she’s had to do and she has
been allowed time in class to
work on these.
Year 13 student Henry Mc-
Callum will travel to Beijing,
China in August with the New
Zealand geography Olympiad
team.
Henry is also an
accomplished rower.
He placed second in the boys’
under-18 coxless pairs at the
Maadi Cup earlier this year.
