Facebook us on facebook.com/riseupchristchurch/ Anger over lack of bus service ANDREW KING Bishopdale residents are angry that no changes will be made to bus routes after a recent study showed the area was well served by public transport. Bus routes throughout the city were revamped by Environment Canterbury in 2014 due to falling numbers on certain routes. ECan met with the Bishopdale Community Trust and residents to address their concerns that the area does not have an adequate bus service. ECan said a report from Abley Transportation Consultants found the Bishopdale community is wellserved by public transport, with no immediate need for change. But trust community development worker Tania Smith said residents need a direct route in to town from Bishopdale. “They need to get into town and Papanui, as most of the health care services for people in Bishopdale are in those areas,” she said. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN However, ECan said it would cost between $301,950 to $312,750 per year to re-route the Orbiter, taking into account estimated fare revenue from additional passengers. ECan commissioner Rex Williams said it was important to get regular feedback from the community to ensure it runs the best service possible for customers. “Because we received a lot of negative feedback after making changes in Bishopdale, we asked Abley to do a review of the bus routes in this area. As a result of this investigation, no immediate changes will be made to the Bishopdale bus services in the short-term,” he said. He said the area may be looked at again as part of a wider review of the network starting later this year. Bishopdale resident Fiona Simons said they understood the old route would not be re-established, but a direct line into the city was needed. “They are nice enough people [ECan] but they looked like they had made up their minds before the meeting,” she said. Share your views with us, email andrew.king@starmedia.kiwi TRAFFIC MONITORING The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board have asked city council traffic engineering staff to monitor traffic and pedestrian use of the Harewood, Breens and Gardiners Rds intersection. Monitoring is needed to verify whether there are any continuing pedestrian safety issues. Recent submissions from residents and a nearby school has indicated that monitoring is needed. CENTRE ON TRACK The tender for the Bishopdale Community Centre and Library is currently out for its construction. The approved design for the new facility shows a combined library and community hall joined by an atrium. The library includes a 330 sq m collection space and can also open out to a deck. The adjacent meeting spaces can be booked by community groups, and will also be available after hours when the library is closed. ROAD CLOSED Dover St in St Albans will be closed for three days from tomorrow while a wastewater main is being repaired. The closure will be between number 33 Dover St and Radnor St. Between 6pm and 7am the work area will be steel plated so that one-way southbound traffic can be maintained.
