Submarines rise to<br />

top of competition<br />

BREENS Intermediate’s A<br />

grade water polo team, the<br />

Submarines, have won the year 7<br />

and 8 competition at Jellie Park<br />

Recreation and Sports Centre<br />

recently.<br />

The final was played between<br />

Breens and Sumner was the<br />

culmination of a term of tough<br />

competition in the pool.<br />

The teams were unable to be<br />

separated during round robin<br />

play as they battled to a 2-2 draw.<br />

However, Breens coach Jono<br />

Collins said the final was a different<br />

story.<br />

“Sumner scored first but this<br />

just seemed to energise the<br />

Submarines, showing heart and<br />

coming out on top in the end<br />

3-1,” he said.<br />

“Some outstanding work in<br />

goal by Blake Richards saw a<br />

number of shots repelled, while<br />

dominating the pool Piper<br />

Spencer and Aiden Carson kept<br />

the opposition at bay, with Aiden<br />

scoring all three goals.”<br />

The Submarines have been<br />

together for two terms now<br />

and things look bright as they<br />

work towards the South Island<br />

tournament in Dunedin later this<br />

year.<br />

Fairy tales come to life<br />

HAREWOOD SCHOOL pupils<br />

performed at the Aurora Centre<br />

in Burnside to showcase what<br />

they had learnt in their literary<br />

study of fairy tales.<br />

One hundred and seventy<br />

two pupils were involved in the<br />

production called The Fairy Tale<br />

Fantasy and was written and<br />

directed by teachers Julie Argyle<br />

and Joanna Woods.<br />

School spokeswoman Angela<br />

Dini said the pupils focus during<br />

the term was dance and music<br />

and the classes worked hard<br />

towards integrating the two.<br />

“The synopsis of the story is<br />

children writing fairy tales as<br />

part of their literacy studies.<br />

They then had to gather information<br />

about what characteristics<br />

make a good fairy tale.<br />

“Then each class at the school<br />

chose a fairy tale and danced to<br />

the appropriate music,” she said.<br />

There were whole school songs<br />

in between each class dance.<br />

Seven year-old Lilly Carline<br />

was a huge fan of the night.<br />

perform on the stage,” she said.<br />

Ms Dini said all the children<br />

had a great time and the Aurora<br />

Centre was packed with parents,<br />

extended family and friends.<br />

Seven-year-old Emily Grins<br />

said she loved the colour and<br />

music.<br />

“I loved watching the other<br />

classes dance and sing,” she said.<br />
