Submarines rise to
top of competition
BREENS Intermediate’s A
grade water polo team, the
Submarines, have won the year 7
and 8 competition at Jellie Park
Recreation and Sports Centre
recently.
The final was played between
Breens and Sumner was the
culmination of a term of tough
competition in the pool.
The teams were unable to be
separated during round robin
play as they battled to a 2-2 draw.
However, Breens coach Jono
Collins said the final was a different
story.
“Sumner scored first but this
just seemed to energise the
Submarines, showing heart and
coming out on top in the end
3-1,” he said.
“Some outstanding work in
goal by Blake Richards saw a
number of shots repelled, while
dominating the pool Piper
Spencer and Aiden Carson kept
the opposition at bay, with Aiden
scoring all three goals.”
The Submarines have been
together for two terms now
and things look bright as they
work towards the South Island
tournament in Dunedin later this
year.

Fairy tales come to life
HAREWOOD SCHOOL pupils
performed at the Aurora Centre
in Burnside to showcase what
they had learnt in their literary
study of fairy tales.
One hundred and seventy
two pupils were involved in the
production called The Fairy Tale
Fantasy and was written and
directed by teachers Julie Argyle
and Joanna Woods.
School spokeswoman Angela
Dini said the pupils focus during
the term was dance and music
and the classes worked hard
towards integrating the two.
“The synopsis of the story is
children writing fairy tales as
part of their literacy studies.
They then had to gather information
about what characteristics
make a good fairy tale.
“Then each class at the school
chose a fairy tale and danced to
the appropriate music,” she said.
There were whole school songs
in between each class dance.
Seven year-old Lilly Carline
was a huge fan of the night.
“It was exciting that we got to

perform on the stage,” she said.
Ms Dini said all the children
had a great time and the Aurora
Centre was packed with parents,
extended family and friends.
Seven-year-old Emily Grins
said she loved the colour and
music.
“I loved watching the other
classes dance and sing,” she said.
