EC to take
over EMLM
Provincial intervention plan being drafted
ANDISA BONANI
T
HE Enoch Mgijima
Local Municipality
(EMLM) is to be
placed under
provincial administration,
ANC provincial chairman
Oscar Mabuyane
confirmed on Sunday at
Nonzwakazi Methodist
Church in Mlungisi.
C o o p e r at i v e
governance and
traditional affairs (Cogta)
MEC Fikile Xasa sent a
letter to EMLM on
November 10, indicating
his intention to place the
municipality under
provincial administration
by invoking section 139
(1)(a) of the co n st i t u t i o n .
The section provides
for the intervention of
provinces in cases of
financial crises, but had
discretion in cases where
there were problems in
making payments or
where expenditure
exceeded revenue.
The majority of EMLM
councillors voted against
being placed under
provincial administration
in a council meeting on
November 14. A response
had to be sent to Xasa by
November 30.
Mabuyane said there
was a high level of
instability and
ill-discipline, both
politically and
administratively, in the
municipalit y.
“Provincial leadership
is working on issues
plaguing EMLM and an
intervention plan is being
draf ted,” said Mabuyane.
He said the instability
and infighting in the local
authority were caused by
leaders “who do not want
to do the right thing and
obey the rules”.
If the current level of
provincial intervention
did not work, the next
step would be taken.
“I have been in
communication with the
MEC and we have
decided to deploy an
administrator to assist
this municipality. If there
The final issue of The
Rep for 2017 will be
available in stores on
Friday December 22,
and will be free to our
Christmas gift to you.
The first issue of The
Rep will appear on
Friday January 12.
is still no positive change,
we have agreed that the
next step to follow would
be to dissolve EMLM and
to send a clear message
to say even if it is people
of the ANC who are
corrupt and ill-disciplined,
appropriate steps will be
taken to remedy
misconduct. The ANC is
for the people and not
certain individuals who
want to push their own
agendas via the name of
our organisation.”
Last month during an
interview session with
reporters at Roydon
Private Nature Reserve,
Xasa said he would be
compelled to invoke
section 139 (1) (b) if he
received an
unsatisfactory response
from EMLM.
“This section allows me
to take some authority of
OSCAR MABUYANE
the municipality and give
it to an identified
administrator. Councillors
would remain and
continue doing their jobs.
The mayor is
fundamentally a
councillor as well and
therefore would remain.”
Section 139 (1) (b)
indicates that, “...
assuming responsibility
for the relevant obligation
in that municipality to the
extent necessary to
maintain essential
national standards or
meet established
minimum standards for
the rendering of a
service, prevent that
municipal council from
taking unreasonable
action that is prejudicial
to the interests of another
municipality or to the
province as a whole, or
maintain economic unity.”
Cogta spokesman
Mamnkeli Ngam
confirmed this week that
the MEC was still
studying the response
from EMLM and due
processes would be
followed based on Xasa’s
r e p l y.
Municipal spokesman
Fundile Feketshana said
the municipality had not
yet received
communication from the
MEC’s office.
Man falls down shaft, survives
keep guards busy
DURING the weekend,
response officers
attended to 17 panic
signals at liquor
premises, where they
had to attend to
patrons being under
the influence of alcohol
and causing problems.
Last Thursday
afternoon, Red Guard
response officers
apprehended a suspect
who had stolen
chocolates at a store.
The chocolates were
recovered and the
suspect released after
the owner declined to
open a criminal case,
operations manager
Willie Reynecke said.
Later, response
officers caught a staff
member at another
store for theft of stock.
The stock was returned
and the owner declined
to open a case.
On Friday night,
response officers
attended to an alarm
activation at the
premises of an
architect where they
found a bag containing
household items.
As they were leaving,
two people said
someone had broken
into their house and run
into the premises. The
response officers did a
further search and
recovered some stolen
items in the grounds of
a nearby block of flats.
In the early hours of
Sunday, response
officers in Engcobo
responded to a duress
call from the security
officer at a filling
station in the town.
On their arrival, the
suspects started
shooting at them and
they returned fire.
The suspects took a
small, undisclosed
amount of money.
Nobody was injured.
AMAN who fell down an
uncovered shaft of about 30
metres in Komani on Monday
night miraculously survived the
ordeal.
The man, whose identity is not
known, apparently fell down the
concrete shaft, situated in open
veld between the Enoch Mgijima
Local Municipality (EMLM)
technical services department and
the Komani River, at about 8pm.
The EMLM rescue and fire
brigade unit reacted swiftly and
absailed down the shaft, securing
the man with cables before
hoisting him back up. The police
was on hand to assist.
The man escaped with minor
injuries but was taken to Frontier
Hospital for monitoring.
EMLM spokesman Gcobani
Msindwana said the municipality
wanted to commend the speedy
response of the rescue team and
thanked the Emergency Medical
Services for alerting the rescue
unit to the man’s plight.
Police spokeswoman Captain
Namhla Mdleleni said no case had
been opened with the police. –
EMLM appoints MM despite opposition
of no confidence against the mayor and
FORMER Amatole District Municipality motions would not be discussed as they
(ADM) municipal manager (MM) Chris were not on the agenda. We expected the
Magwangqana was appointed as the same treatment in the matter of the MM.
and the ANC wanted. It's shocking that
A debate took place in a closed session council would appoint someone
on whether his background check fitted implicated in a toilet scandal worth half a
what opposition parties deemed as “the billion to lead a municipality with
right person for the job”.
This relates to an investigation into a Squabbles arose during the meeting
Our man the new CT ombudsman
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
THE City of Cape Town has had a new
ombudsman in Mongezi Menye – a
former Mlungisi and Ezibeleni resident
– since May.
Menye matriculated from
KwaKomani Comprehensive School.
Menye said he had been excited
about the challenging role he had to
play since he had received news of his
appointment earlier this year.
He said his main aim was to serve
the city and its citizens by ensuring
that the office achieved its legislative
m a n d at e .
The role of the ombudsman’s office
was to investigate and facilitate the
resolution of complaints lodged by
residents of the city on claims of
maladministration, injustice and a lack
of service by the city administration.
“The office renders free,
independent, impartial, non-prejudicial
and apolitical ombudsman services,
which mainly entails alternative
dispute resolution together with
advocacy, relationship management
and communication.”
Menye boasts an extensive legal
background and was the adjudicator
general in Johannesburg Community
Schemes Ombud Services (CSOS)
prior to his appointment in Cape Town.
“I am also currently serving as a
board member of the Anti-Corruption
Centre for Education and Research of
the University of Stellenbosch
(ACCERUS).”
Menye is a firm believer in and
NEW MM: Chris Magwangqana
meeting to reprint the sheet containing
information about Magwangqana's
appointment, which initially indicated that
the document was confidential and
changed it to an addendum so it could be
discussed.
During the open session, the speaker
was asked about why he had not put
advocate for consumer rights.
He said the city’s ombudsman
would aim to ensure compliance with
the provisions of the Consumer
Protection Act designed to strengthen
constitutional democracy ensuring
fairness, transparency and
accountabilit y.
The most challenging aspect of his
job was to recommend a workable
solution and to reconcile opposing
parties by ensuring that the aggrieved
party was provided with fair service
regardless of a complaint being found
to be justified or not.
Asked about his home town and
what he would like to see happening
in Komani, Menye said, “I would like to
see improved service delivery that is
in line with the expectations outlined
items relating to the MM’s appointment
and the motions of no confidence on the
agenda.
“I plead with council that motions be
discussed in the next council meeting next
year. We are running out of time and we
still have other pertinent issues to
discuss,” he replied.
EFF councillor Luthando Amos said they
would challenge the MM appointment in
court after consulting their national and
provincial offices.
“We can not have an MM with a
criminal element and hope he will deliver
the municipality from bankruptcy.”
DA councillor Malibongwe Xhelisilo said
the DA would back taking the matter to
court. “I submitted a letter highlighting
flaws in the MM advert and asked that the
matter be discussed in council but it was
not. Council advertised a contract of five
years, which means Magwangqana will be
MM until 2023 and by then, elections for a
in government’s promise of Batho
Pele. In general terms, service delivery
that is customer focused and
responsive to the needs of the
residents of Komani. There should be
a major focus on the road
infrastructure and other services.”
For Komani to reach the level of
Cape Town – the latter which is known
to be a world-class city – he said a
long-term strategy should be focused
on service delivery that was
citizen-centric and based on
sustainable development.
“This will increase public
satisfaction. There should also be a
concerted effort to deal with the
scourge of unemployment, crime and
substance abuse, things that are
affecting the youth.”
new council will have been done.
Magwangqana got “basic” (as a grading)
in the category of change management.
“What I read in the papers about words
uttered by the ANC provincial chairman
about ill-discipline in the ANC, is true. We
are led by gangsters and immature people.”
Peter said the council worked on the
principle of presumption of innocence
until proven guilty. When asked about not
adhering to the rules of council, he said,
“The rules indicate that if there is an
important matter left out of the agenda
that would jeopardise the function of the
institution, we make an addendum to
allow the issue to be discussed.
“The motions were not dealt with
because they are not urgent – they will be
discussed in the next council meeting. The
municipality needs the MM to start
immediately. Acting MM Mzoxolo Dingani
will write to the Cogta MEC to tell him
about the appointment.”
Dordrecht to Cacadu, from
Komani to Stutterheim, from
Sterkstroom to Tarkastad and
further afield – c e l e b r at e d
triumphs and suffered through
difficult times.
It’s been a year when many
have lost loved ones and a year
when political and economic
turmoil has left its mark on
locals. It has not been an easy
year and as we look towards
2018, indications are that it will
also be a year of hardship as
unemployment continues to
rise.
The Rep can look back on a
year in which the newspaper
has thrived and our online
offering has taken off, far
beyond our wildest
expectations. With digital an
exciting medium for the future
but with print continuing to
make its mark in communities,
it has been a year of growth for
the title which, at 158 years (one
of the oldest in South Africa),
has had to adjust to a changing
m a r ke t .
In 2018, our focus will be, as it
has in the past, on sharing the
news and views of the area. We
are far from perfect but we do
try to give as fair, accurate and
balanced a report of events as
we possibly can and we will
continue to strive to do the
same next year. We will need
your help to do so and remain
most grateful for your support
over the past years.
Our wishes for you – our
readers and advertisers – are
simple. We wish you a year full
of hope, courage and strength
for the battles which inevitably
lie ahead. We wish you laughter,
enjoyment and awareness to
appreciate the moments of joy
which will also await in 2018.
If South Africans have proven
anything in the past it is that we
are tenacious. We have faced
huge challenges in the past and
have overcome.
As a final wish, it would be
great if 2018 was the year that
we learn to look beyond race
and start building a more
unified country. Unfortunately,
people use race as a tool to
promote their own interests,
much to the detriment of those
who suffer from such ambitions.
From The Rep to all of you –
may you look forward to a year
filled with the spirit of ubuntu, a
year of opportunity and
kindness, both in giving and
receiving.
Boom or bust?
THE ANC has always emphasised
the point that it was formed in
Bloemfontein in a church.
Is that the reason it has seemed
to be blessed and given so many
second chances to redeem itself?
Could this also explain the
golden opportunity this weekend
to reclaim it, to right the ship and
set it on the path to
righteousness?
It is no secret that the Zuma
leadership of the ANC and, by
extension the country, has been
nothing short of disastrous.
Anyone who argues against that
is either a beneficiary of this
chaos or is downright naive
and/or stupid.
The ANC and
many of us
made a huge
blunder in
backing a clearly
flawed character
who never made any attempts to
hide his true self.
That he managed to be seen as
a messiah and an antidote to the
elitist politics of Mbeki and his
anti-worker policies, is a mystery.
Ten years down the line, the
ANC delegates have in their
hands the most important
decision to either save the party,
and possibly the country, or to
shove it further down the slope to
its eventual demise. I am afraid
the delegates can not afford to
make the same mistake they
made in 2007 in Polokwane and
pin all their hopes on one person.
No one person can steer the
ship to calmer waters.
The way ANC elections work
can either lead to a good thing or
a total disaster.
There are primarily two slates.
On those two slates, only three
members appear on both. So what
it means, is a whole lot of capable
leaders will not be in the next NEC.
The same thing happened in
Polokwane and Mangaung and
COPE and EFF were born.
Will the same thing happen this
time? The most important thing
the delegates have to take into
consideration is not where their
favourites will end up, but if the
candidate they choose will be
accepted by the electorate.
Remember those 750000
delegates can not elect the ANC
into government. If we have 20
million voters
IN
TOUCH
... with Phumelele P Hlati
they will have
to convince
those to vote
for the ANC.
Of the two
delegates who
are frontrunners, who is more
likely to convince the South
African voters to vote for the party
– Cyril Ramaphosa or Nkosazana
Dlamini-Zuma?
I will plump for neither at this
stage as I feel that what is more
important is not the candidates
themselves, but who and what
comes with them.
Take a look at the characters at
the forefront of both campaigns.
That is where part of your answer
lies.
Political parties exist to do one
thing – to win elections and
everything else flows from there.
It can not be denied that the ANC
is on the decline.
Which of the two would arrest
or reverse this? That is what the
delegates have to decide.
ROUND&ABOUT
Farmers celebrate 100 years
THERE was great reason for
celebration last weekend when
the Bird’s River Farmers’
Association celebrated its centenary.
Situated in the Stormberg region of
the North Eastern Cape near the
Penhoek Pass, the association serves
farming people living in the Bird’s
River (named after a land surveyor
named Bird), Halseton and Upper
Penhoek areas.
A function was held at the Bird’s
River farmers’ hall to celebrate the
centenary. As is the case with so
many farming communities, this
simple hall is the hub of the
surrounding area. Not only is it used
for farmers’ meetings, it also serves
as an informal library, there used to
be a cine club before the advent of
TV, there were table tennis matches
and all sorts of parties, from 21sts to
New Year’s Eve, stork parties, kitchen
tea ... you name it, all adding to the
wonderful sense of caring and
community that abounds in places
where families have lived in the
same surroundings for generations.
There also used to be a railway
siding and sale pens on site where
stock sales were regularly held and,
after the stock was loaded, a happy
round of socialising usually ensued.
At the function MC Roy Callaghan
welcomed the more than 100 guests
present, some of whom have moved
or retired elsewhere, but who could
not miss the opportunity of catching
up with people they had not seen for
ages. He invited East Cape
Agricultural Union chairman Douglas
Stern as guest speaker to address
the gathering, which he did with
SPECIAL OCCASION: Members of the Bird’s River Farmers’ A s s o c i at i o n
which celebrated its centenary last weekend were, back from left,
Rowan Stretton, Jan and Annalie van der Walt, Connie Klopper, Jill
Callaghan, Ed Clarke, Peter Mortlock, Dave Birch, Jeff Stretton, Andrew
Hartley, Danie Els and Andre Scheepers. Front, Paul Mortlock, Roy
Callaghan, Johan Wege, Lynda Hartley and Lawrence Scheepers. Absent
Justin Stretton, Robbie Stretton and John Daly
WELL DONE: Douglas
Stern, centre,
chairman of the East
Cape Agricultural
Union, presented the
Bird’s River Farmers’
A s s o c i at i o n ,
represented by
secretary Lynda
Hartley and chairman
Johan Wege, with a
certificate in
recognition of its
contribution to
organised agriculture
It’s full steam ahead for Soul 2 Soul
CHUX FOURIE
THERE’S no relaxing just yet and there’s a busy
time ahead for the members of the uniquely
Komani group Soul 2 Soul as they have plenty of
activity and community projects lined up before
sitting down to their Christmas lunch.
Starting tomorrow on December 16, they will be
helping to hand out food parcels for children, to
which they have also contributed, from the
Victoria Park Methodist Church.
In the evening, they will be joined by
saxophonist Edgar Botha for a fabulous evening
of “langarm” dancing, fun and entertainment in
the Komani town hall.
Then, for a slightly early Christmas eve, they
will be joined by the Siyaya Jazz Band from
Unifound to provide music, literally for everyone.
Old and young are welcome to dance and sing
along or just listen with a smile at the Ashley
great enthusiasm and humour.
The next speaker was Paul
Mortlock who, together with Roy
Callaghan, had produced a booklet
highlighting the history of the
association, plus a general history of
the Stormberg region. Paul
mentioned the extraordinary work
that Roy and Sandy Stretton had
contributed to the book.
Sandy Stretton, well-known for his
interest in and knowledge of the
Wyngaardt Hall on the evening of Saturday
December 23. All the funds raised on this
evening will be given to Huis John Vorster.
Group spokesman Gaby van Heerden said they
wished to thank God for all His blessings, as well
as members of the public and business owners of
Komani for all their support throughout the year.
history of the region expanded on the
article he had produced for the book.
Sandy’s contribution included a
history of the Stormberg going back
200 years right up to the modern
d ay.
What was so interesting was the
work he had done on more than 20
farms situated in the area, listing
most of the owners in chronological
order and describing many things
they had achieved on their farms and
the vagaries of nature at various
times.
Johan Wege, chairman of
association, proposed a vote of
thanks to everybody who had
contributed to the evening. However,
he did have a special word of thanks
for Lynda Hartley, who has been the
secretary of the association for the
past 14 years, and Laurence
Scheepers ended the proceedings
with a prayer.
Douglas Stern presented
certificates of recognition from the
Eastern Agricultural Union to Johan
Wege and Lynda Hartley.
After that, the celebrations really
began in earnest and the public had
the opportunity to bid on two
beautiful paintings of Bird’s River
with the magnificent Stormberg
mountains in the background done
by well known local artists with
connections to the area, namely
Christine Maclean (née Callaghan,
who grew up there) and Stephen
Townley Basset, who lived in the area
for some years.
In true farming tradition, all
present ended the evening with a
very tasty supper and drinks.
“Remember, the blessing is in giving, not
receiving,” he said and wished all their
supporters and fans a blessed Christmas, a safe
journey if they were travelling and a happy New
KOMANIW E AT H E R
AFTER the unseasonally cool
weather, warmer temperatures
will return this weekend, but that
does not necessarily mean they
will last. Whether we enjoy the
heat or not, we have to face the
fact that there will not be proper
summer rains until we have
summer weather.
To d ay ’s starting temperature is
predicted to be 11°C and the sky
will be clear with a gentle
breeze. The maximum will be
31°C.
Tomorrow will be mostly
cloudy with perhaps a light
drizzle, starting at 13°C and
rising to a decidedly hot 38°C.
On Sunday, there is a 90%
chance of good rain with high
humidity. The minimum and
maximum temperatures will be
12 and 26°C respectively. –
necessary alterations as this is my
property and I have to look after it.
The engineers should come and
look at the drainage problem and
sort it out. The gutter that has been
provided for between my house
and the street, will not work.
The new pavement is higher than
the old pavement. It will be flooded
out when it rains. The step-up from
the old pavement to the new
pavement is high and needs a step.
The fire extinguisher point has
also been closed. A new drain
should be made to take water away
while the big drain next to the
house needs a grid to keep paper,
etc from blocking the drain.
BLUEPRINT 1881
Flashy officials the
nail in sport’s coffin
SABELO Jayiya of Komani writes:
Sport is dying day by day, while
people get paid handsomely for
doing little or nothing. You wonder
what their deliverables are as for
them, key performance areas do not
seem to matter.
I agree with the statement by
Mawethu Maseti in The Rep of
November 17 (“Downward spiral in
interest for Komani sport of concern”)
that sport is dying, especially in the
black areas.
Those responsible for its demise
are our own people, whom we see
driving around in flashy cars, shiny
suits and fancy dresses.
When sport was moved from the
Department of Education to the
Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts
and Culture, I thought its growth
would be definite for it was to be
manned by men and women who
would specifically dedicate their
energies to it.
Little did I know that a new avenue
to syphon funds was being created.
The standard of sport has got worse.
Perhaps it is because these officials’
children are at former Model C
schools where sport is still taken
s e r i o u s l y.
There are many who assist in
drawing children away from crime and
substance abuse into sport. These are
the people who use their own
resources to develop sport. They do
that for the love of children and sport.
Instead of getting support or being
seen as complementing the efforts of
the department, they get sidelined.
They use their resources with little
or no assistance and are then seen
as a nuisance and nauseating
beggars by the department and the
municipalities.
They do not even have offices to
work from while one stadium in town
is left to rot and the other is given to
a church from which to worship
Do our people care? Why kill the
future for one’s nefarious objectives?
Some children struggle to make it
academically and are gifted in sport.
Why deprive such children of
opportunities? Why does the
government not employ people
dedicated to sport?
I have not even said a word on the
adults in sport.
Picture this: you’re driving on the open

just you on the national road. That’s when
you know you’re on a SANRAL road.
So what exactly is the national road
network and how long does it run?
The national road network consists
of all the major roads demarked with
‘N’, as well as a few provincial and
municipal roads that connect the
country and keep the economy and
its people moving.
South Africa has a total road network
of 750 000km, which is the tenth
longest road network in the world,
of which 22 197km are SANRAL roads.
The vast majority of these roads are
not tolled and their maintenance and
improvement is funded through tax
allocations from government.
As a general rule, most of the roads
designated with an ‘N’ are part of
Reg. No. 1998/009584/30
the national route and
are managed by SANRAL.
There are exceptions, such
as a stretch of the portions
of the N12 and N14 in the
western part of the Gauteng
Province, N9 and N12 in the
Western Cape Province and
N1 and N2 in the City of Cape
Town, leading to the Cape Town
International Airport.
The ‘R’ routes (Regional roads)
and the ‘M’ routes (Metropolitan
roads) fall under different provinces
and municipalities. However, some
‘R’ routes were declared national
roads and fall under the SANRAL
jurisdiction.
If in doubt, you can check the SANRAL
map on our website: www.nra.co.za
Get a feel for the area you are considering
MOVING down the road
can be a daunting
task, never mind
across the country. Whether
for family reasons or an
employment opportunity, it is
not uncommon for people to
find themselves in a situation
where they may have to
relocate to another city or
town in another region.
While challenging,
technology has made the
world a smaller place, which
makes moving across the
country – or the world for that
matter – far less difficult.
RE/MAX of Southern Africa
regional director and CEO
Adrian Goslett provided a few
tips for people looking to find
the right property during a
long-distance search in an
unfamiliar market:
The internet is a great tool
About 90% of people will
begin their property search
online, whether buying in the
same neighbourhood or on
the other side of the country.
The reason for this is simple –
they can access a massive
amount of information within
a short time frame from the
comfort of their own home.
“An online search can
provide information about the
cost of living in certain
neighbourhoods, the average
price of the homes available
and what kind of amenities
and schools are in and around
the area,” said Goslett.
Look beyond the photos
Virtual tours are a great way
to browse through a home
without actually having to go
there in person. Also, sites
such as Google Maps are
highly useful to get an idea of
the home’s street view and
surrounding elements.
“In some instances, agents
will use drones to video the
home from an aerial
perspective. This allows you to
see the property from a bird’s
eye view, getting perspective
on the property, grounds and
the surrounding
neighbourhood,” said Goslett.
Timing is key
The property market moves
in cycles with phases moving
up and down over a period.
Two areas can experience
different market phases
during the same time frame,
depending on external
influences that may have an
impact, such as the opening
of a new shopping mall or
university. When searching for
property, buyers should take
these cycles into account and
search strategically.
The more people who
know you are looking
for a property, the
b e tte r
Use your network
Social media is an effective
and efficient way to let your
network know about the home
search. The more people who
know, the better, because
there might just be someone
who is aware of a good
opportunity in the area you
are moving to.
“If you have friends or
family who are already living
in the area, it is helpful to
have them take a look at
properties you are interested
in to get a feel of the home
and to spot anything that the
virtual tour may have missed,”
advised Goslett.
Make a strategic visit
It is not always a possibility,
but in an ideal situation, it is
best to visit the area before
moving there. Visiting an area
will give you the opportunity
to drive through and explore
different parts of the area in
person. An agent will also be
able to create a schedule of
showings and tours of the
particular neighbourhoods you
are interested in seeing.
“Whether local or on the
other side of the country, it is
vital to work with a reputable,
experienced real estate
professional who works in the
area. An agent who
specialises in your area of
interest will ensure that the
home search is a far smoother
process,” Goslett concluded.
SAFE AS HOUSES: Adequate lighting around your home helps to contribute to security
Security tips to be safe, not sorry
THE summer holidays are here! For many
who are fortunate enough to have some
time away from work and school, it’s a
period of rest and relaxation.
Despite the festive atmosphere, a local
private security company says home and
personal safety must be top priority at all
times.
“Whether you’re staying home,
planning fun days out or short
breakaways, it is important that
precautions are taken to ensure you, your
loved ones and your belongings are safe
and secure,” Fidelity ADT Security
(coastal outlying branches) district
manager Peter Kruger said.
“There are a number of practical and
cost-effective measures that can be taken
to enhance home security.”
It’s a good idea to start off with a walk
around your property. Kruger advised
considering the following:
ýLook out for anything on the inside or
outside of the boundary wall that could
help a criminal easily climb into or out of
the property; this includes low-hanging
branches.
ýTrim back thick bushes which
provide hiding places for criminals;
ýEnsure that no valuables or tools that
could be used as weapons or to gain
entry to the house or garage, are left in
the garden or yard.
If you are entertaining at home, Kruger
advised guests not to leave any valuables
in their vehicles where they could be
easily spotted from the outside.
Encourage them to rather keep them in
the boot or bring them inside. This, he
said, is a general rule that can be applied
whenever you are out and about.
Should the household be out for the
day, there are a few simple checks that
can be done before leaving home to
Picture: SUPPLIED
secure the house from the inside.
“Ensure that all windows – fa n l i g h t s
included – are properly closed and
l o c ke d , ” sayd Kruger.
“If no one will be around until after
dark, draw the blinds or curtains in such
a way that no-one can see inside.”
For anyone who will be away for a few
days or more, Kruger has the following
advice:
ýIf the lights are not on a timer, have a
trusted family member or neighbour visit
the house daily to switch them on and
of f ;
ýAsk them to open and close the
curtains and blinds, and to regularly
remove any mail left in the post box.
“Also, regardless of whether you will
remain at home or be away, get in touch
with your security company to test your
alarm system, and to update your contact
details and those of your key-holders.”

Bopa oldies have fun at their Christmas party
SIVENATHI GOSA
BANGAKHULA Older Persons’
Association (Bopa) enjoyed their
final gathering last week at the
year-end Christmas party.
Bopa secretary Tendy Sixabayi
said while meetings during the year
focused on the work of the
association, the year-end function
was purely about enjoyment.
“We are here to wish Bopa
members farewell and a blessed
festive season. May they enjoy
holiday with their loved ones, and
come back next year ready to tackle
whatever obstacle the organisation
has to face.”
Manager Ntyatyie Gaca said their
vision was to promote public
participation within the community,
to care for the vulnerable, to learn
about health- and wealth-related
MEC Pemmy Majodina last
Thursday comforted the family
members of passengers who
died after a health depar tment
minibus overturned between
Komani and Sterkstroom on
December 7.
Majodina met the relatives at
Komani Hospital as they came to
identify the deceased.
Majodina said, “It is a very
emotional exercise for people to
see the bodies of their deceased
family members, who left home
alive, in a mortuary.”
Majodina said the department
would support the families with
burial costs, including coffins
and storage of the bodies.
Majodina said they have
identified three major routes for
their festive plan for E a st e r n
Cape roads.
“We are targeting the N2
which is also known as the ‘killer
road’, the R61 and the N6.
“We have put 645 traffic
officers throughout the Eastern
Cape on various routes. We have
also purchased three trucks for
impounding stray animals – one
in the Chris Hani District
Municipality, one in OR Thambo
municipality and one in the
Amathole metro.”
She warned livestock owners
that if their stock was
impounded during the festive
season, they would only be able
to retrieve these in the new year
and would have to pay for the
impoundment.
She said mobile testing
stations were being placed at
strategic points and that cars
without licence disks and which
were not roadworthy, would be
towed away.
Motorists who had fines in
arrears, would be arrested.
Lunga Funani said her aunt
Nozamile Funani, who died in
the crash, had been the head of
the household after her husband
died in 2015 and had to provide
for children.
“My aunt had four children of
which two have died. Her
first-born died on the same road.
It has affected us badly. Her two
children do not work and she
was looking after the
grandchildren of her deceased
children.”
Her aunt was working in a
hospital kitchen at the time of
her death.
Komani cluster commander
Major General Tembisile Patekile
said the police were requested
by Majodina to bring the items
of the deceased from
Sterkstroom, so the families
could view them.
“It is pleasing to see pastors
here and because there are
senior officials from government
here as well, the police had to
come and ensure that there is
sufficient security.”
Eastern Cape department of
transport safety and liaison
spokesman Khuselwa Rantjie
said the department would like
to send a message of
condolences to the families and
are wishing those who have
survived, a speedy recovery.
He called on people to drive
safely and to exercise patience
on the roads, mindful that they
were sharing the roads with
cyclists, motorcyclists and
pedest rians.
issues and to generate income.
“This year we participated in the
Golden Games that were organised
by the department of sport,
recreation, arts and culture in
Cradock. We also visited people
who are sick and vulnerable and
generated income this year with
raffles and sold some cakes and
scones.”
Gaca indicated that next year
they want to focus more on
improving their health and lifestyle,
starting by exercising every day and
ensuring improved attendance.
“The only challenge is a lack of
funds, but we are working on it,”
Gaca added.
Young chef’s tale of success
THANDOLWETHU MHLOKOMFANA
Former Funda pupil wants to inspire others
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
HOTEL chef Thandolwethu
Mhlokomfana, 21, from
Whittlesea recently
returned to his home town with a
message of encouragement for
the pupils of Funda Senior
Secondary School.
Mhlokomfana works at the
five-star Arabella Hotel and Spa
in Cape Town.
He completed a diploma in
food and preparation in cookery
and another in pastry and
cookery at the South African
Chef’s Academy.
He said being exposed to the
kitchen “soothed his soul”.
Government resources for
study in the hospitality industry
were insufficient.
“I wanted to instill a sense of
hope in those who have given
up. If I have the expertise and
skill, why can’t they? Being
qualified at the age of 20 made
me realise that if I can do it from
a disadvantaged background, so
can my peers.”
He said he hoped his success
would help others to succeed
academically and for former
pupils to return to share their
knowledge.
His specialities were baked
goods and pastries. “I am in love
with the science behind baking
and how it can test your
patience. It requires you to be
creative and to think outside the
box.”
A relevant qualification topped
with hard work and being placed
under the supervision of a
mentor for assistance in
moulding a chef’s craft was
necessary for success.
“Once you become a chef,
your creativity and passion will
speak volumes.”
What fascinated him about
food was the smile it left on
people’s faces.
“The joy and laughter around
the table when people are
eating, makes me really feel
appreciated and valued. I am
fascinated by the fact that there
are no boundaries and
limitations when it comes to
cooking. The art, the challenge
of it, always having to be
innovative, introducing
something that will grab
people’s attention and having to
feed thousands of people in a
short time gives me an
adrenaline rush.”
M h l o ko m fa n a ’s said the
hospitality industry was bristling
with opportunities. His dream
was to be a future food inventor
and endorser and to open his
own chef’s school.
Buyolo Business Advisory
Services based in Cape Town and recently
published and launched his book The
South African Entrepreneur.
Siyengo began his entrepreneurial
career at the age of six, selling sweets to
classmates. After gaining a degree in
science; he worked fulltime and then tried
out his entrepreneurial ventures. He
returned to university to study part-time
for an MBA while establishing his project
management firm.
“I did my own marketing and learnt to
negotiate with banks, clients and
suppliers. All of that was not easy,
business was tough, especially around
the 2008 recession.
“One of the biggest mistakes I made is
to never plan for the downside of
business. After getting the qualifications,
experience and networks, I thought I
would cruise and just make money; but I
got it completely wrong.”
Siyengo indicated that anyone could
start and run their own business if they
put their mind to it, as success came with
passion, hard work, dedication and
sacrifice. Even failure could have a
positive aspect, if the aspiring
entrepreneur was prepared to learn from
his or her mistakes.
“The book covers a wide range of
topics, including what it takes to be an
entrepreneur, informal businesses and
challenges they face, as well as their
transition to formal business. A
step-by-step process to establish and run
a business, advice on finance, marketing
Union speaks
on EMLM MM
ANDISA BONANI
THE South African Municipal
Workers Union (Samwu) has
expressed their support for the
appointment of former Amathole
District Municipality municipal
manager (MM) Chris Magwangqana
as the new MM for the Enoch
Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM).
Magwangqana was implicated in
a toilet scandal worth R631-million
during his tenure at the Amathole
District Municipality.
According to reports, he admitted
the tender was awarded to the
Siyenza Group without following
regular supply chain management
processes.
He confirmed to The Rep in a
telephonic conversation last
Wednesday that he was one of the
candidates interviewed for the
EMLM MM position, but that he was
still awaiting the final decision
(“MM queries”, The Rep, December
8). Reacting to queries from The
Rep, he said he had not seen the
need to disclose information about
his implication in the alleged
wrongdoing to the panel as he was
not under investigation, but the
project as a whole.
Samwu Chris Hani regional
secretary Mongameli Mancam
during a press briefing at the
union’s offices on Tuesday said
Magwangqana had vast experience
as a public servant.
“We are confident that he is
capable of turning around this
municipality and making it stable.
He left all the institutions he has
worked in a stable position,
including the South African Local
Government Association (Salga).
The sanitation scandal that seems
to follow him, is just a means by the
opposition to tarnish his character
and has nothing to do with
exper tise.”
He said the union believed that
Magwangqana offered a
developmental local government.
“We cannot have a municipality
that is run by the ANC whose
decisions are made by minority
parties like the DA and the EFF. If
they have something against
Magwangqana it should be based
on his inability to do the job and not
on him as a person.”
The cooperative governance
department office has to assess
those who are shortlisted for the
MM post into four categories –
basic, competent, advanced and
superior – on a 12-point
competency and proficiency matrix.
Mancam said Magwangqana had
been leading the pack, followed by
former acting EMLM MM Siyabonga
Nkonki and former Tsolwana Local
Municipality MM Similo Dayi.
“Nkonki and Dayi are not fit to take
over. Dayi does not have the required
experience. Nkonki struggled to
stabilise EMLM when he was the
acting MM, there is no way he could
fix this municipality’s issues.”
ANC provincial chairman Oscar
Mabuyane led a delegation of
party leaders to the Nonzwakazi
Methodist Church in Mlungisi
on Sunday for a prayer service
for peace and reconciliation.
The service was hosted ahead
of the ANC national elective
conference set to take place at
the weekend.
The service started with the
church leadership and
Mabuyane laying wreaths at the
memorial site of the 11 people
who were killed at the church in
November 1985.
“We are here to connect with
the people. We could have gone
to any other church but we
chose this one because in the
‘80s the apartheid government
massacred people in this church
because they were barred from
gathering in groups. You cannot
trace the ANC’s background
without mentioning Komani.”
He said the church was a
suitable place for prayers for the
people of the Eastern Cape and
the country as the ANC
prepared for its elective
c o n fe r e n c e .
“We have a huge challenge
as the ANC in the Eastern Cape
IN MEMORY: ANC provincial chairman Oscar Mabuyane and family members of the people
who died during the 1985 massacre, lay wreaths at the memorial site Picture: ANDISA BONANI
where people expect us to
deliver them from their social
st ruggles,” he said.
He said the prayers should
focus on choosing the best
leadership that will uplift the
marginalised people of this
country especially in the
Eastern Cape.
He said it had to be known
that the ANC was not for sale,
and that people were still
dependent on the ANC to lift
them out of poverty after 20
years of democracy.
“We hope for stability and
good leadership that will
advance the party. The ANC is
currently facing what is called a
trust deficit in communities.
People have lost hope and
patience in our party because of
the way leaders of the ANC do
things,” he added.
“We will go to the conference
to restore the prestige of the
ANC in society by electing the
best leadership to lead the
country. If as a leader you
cannot think on the same level
as the population, then you are
not good enough to lead.”

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS
Novel ways to make it
special without the cost
CHRISTMAS is all
about making
people feel special.
It does not have to cost
the earth and with people
facing tough economic
times, it truly is the
thought that counts.
How about surprising
mom and dad (or granny
and grandpa) with some
coffee and biscuits in
bed? Make the tray nice
and festive and enjoy
some time chatting and
laughing your way into
Christmas day.
Play some festive
games and make sure
that the keyword is fun.
No-one needs to win (or
lose) on Christmas day!
Spend some time
singing carols – it does
not matter if you croak
like a frog as long as you
take part. If the family
really can not sing, enjoy
the Christmas music
which will be playing on
the radio.
Spend time making
Christmas cards for your
family and friends while
composing rhymes
indicating why they are so
special in your life. These
could turn out to be a lot
of fun if you get everyone
to join in.
Visit someone who is
lonely or elderly. Reaching
out is just about the best
way to celebrate
Christmas. Take a treat
with you if you can or just
go and spend some time
reading a book or
chatting about days gone
b y.
Cook together. A
Christmas meal is special
just because you’re
together. It does not need
to be fancy, but do spend
some time sharing your
cooking skills and eat
together as people who
care about each other. –
Quotes on Christmas
CHRISTMAS is a special time of
year – a time for family and friends,
laughter and joy. Here are some
famous Christmas quotes to put
you in the mood.
“Christmas isn’t a season. It’s a
fe e l i n g . ”- novelist Edna Ferber.
“Christmas gives us the opportunity
to pause and reflect on the
important things around us – a
time when we can look back on the
year that has passed and prepare
for the year ahead.”- politician
David Cameron.
“Christmas waves a magic wand
over this world, and behold,
everything is softer and more
beautiful.” – author Norman
Vincent Peale.
“Christmas is not a time nor a
season, but a state of mind. To
cherish peace and goodwill, to be
plenteous in mercy, is to have the
real spirit of Christmas.” – for mer
American president Calvin
Co olidge.
“For it is in giving that we
receive.” - St Francis of Assisi.
THE REPRESENTATIVE 15 December 2017
CHRISTMAS GREETINGS
‘Tre e - m e n d o u s ’ Christmas
CHRISTMAS trees
have certainly
evolved since the
introduction of trees as
a symbol of celebration
at this time of year
about 1000 years ago in
Northern Europe.
Wikipedia indicates
that the decorated tree
associated with
Christmas is normally
an evergreen conifer
such as a spruce, a pine
or a fir tree.
In 2004, Pope John
Paul called the
Christmas tree a symbol
of Christ. He indicated
that the ancient custom
exalted the value of life
and reminded Christians
of the Tree of Life found
in Genesis.
Over the years, green
and white artificial trees
have become more
popular as people
become more
environmentally
conscious and some are
just tired of sweeping
up the mess left by a
natural Christmas tree!
It seems that there
are no bounds when it
comes to the
imagination of people
who make Christmas
trees a focal point of
their celebrations.
Over the past few
years, several new ideas
have come to the fore,
including making
Christmas trees out of
wood – or in the latest
fad, pallets – or even
out of plants.
An East London
shopping centre recently
boasted a Christmas tree
made up entirely out of
succulents – a display
CHRISTMAS GREETINGS
PRETTY FESTIVE: Try your hand at making your own Christmas decorations
Make your own decorations
Homemade can be just as fa-la-la and cheaper
CHRISTMAS decorations are
usually shiny, beautiful
…and often expensive.
While store-bought decorations
can add much glitz and glamour
to your tree, your own homemade
decorations can also contribute a
special, sentimental touch.
If you have children, let them
make footprints and handprints in
clay, harden and hang from the
tree on a brightly-coloured ribbon.
Paper chains can be lovely if
decorated with paint and glitter –
and it can keep the children busy
for hours during the holiday!
How about baking some
cookies and hanging these from
the Christmas tree – it makes for
a great snack later on!
Put your creativity to work and
think up ideas on how to turn the
leftover toilet roll into an angel or
a Santa – you’ll be amazed what
you can achieve.
Wirework is beautiful and
although it is not easy, it is a skill
which can be learnt. Find some
soft, pliable wire and form angels
or reindeers or even mini
Christmas trees from wire. If you
want to go all out, decorate these
with beads. These are beautiful
decorations which you can keep
for years to come.
How about trying your hand at
origami and making strings of
swans to thread through the
Christmas tree – or even using
coloured popcorn to add that
flash of brightness?
Wrap some empty boxes and
pack these around the base of the
tree. Now who said it’s got to cost
you an arm and a leg to have a
good-looking tree? – Rep reporter
Call for more DNA labs in SA
NOMSISI BATA
ANDISA BONANI
ATIONAL Commissioner
on the commission for
gender equality, Nomsisi
NBata, wants the law to be
revised and tightened in cases
that involve violence against
women and children.
Speaking during an interview
session at Zwartwater community
hall in Cacadu on Friday,
she said rural
communities were raising
concerns that suspects
were released a day after
charges had been laid.
“Victims have to live in
fear and sometimes they
Campaign should last
the whole year round
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
DEPARTMENT of rural development
and agrarian reform MEC Mlibo
Qoboshiyane, who was the acting
premier at the 16 Days of Activism
Against Gender-based Violence
closing ceremony, said the campaign
should continue for 365 days, 24
hours a day.
Qoboshiyane was addressing
community members at the provincial
closing of the campaign, organised by
the department of social development
at Zwartwater on Friday.
He said people must wake up
knowing they did not harm others
because they came from dignified
homes.
Prior to the event, community
members engaged in a dialogue in
which they discussed different topics
on gender-based violence.
The groups were divided into
youths, children, women, widows, the
elderly and the disabled.
Qoboshiyane said the conversations
aimed to restore the dignity of these
groups which were the most
vulnerable in the community.
“We need to ensure that women
are empowered and skilled. The
provincial government and social
development service centres aim to
increase the network of the physical
ability of women.”
Service centres were also available
for the women to engage in sport and
dialogues.
“This is how we can build society.
are threatened. We want to
persuade magistrates to stop
granting bail or parole to
perpetrators of barbaric and
gruesome crimes because they
cost women their dignity and
lives.”
She said the prevalence of
violence against women was
high, particularly in rural areas.
“Women and children in this area
are not safe in their own homes,
schools, workplace and in the
communit y.”
Bata said the commission
strives for a community that is
free from all forms of inequality
by monitoring court cases and
intervening when needed.
Government is not only about
delivering houses, roads and water –
the centres also need to deal with
issues of the inner soul.”
“We want to inculcate a culture that
denounces violence, abuse, physical
assault and rape.”
He was pleased to see police
visibility at the event as abuse of drugs
and alcohol were rife in the village.
Department of social development
MEC Nancy Sihlwayi said the
dialogue delved deep into the origin
of abuse.
“The women said they were not
respected by their own children. We
need support in dealing with these
issues. We need stakeholders to
come on board in fighting the
problem.”
The country needed more DNA
laboratories with the aim to have
at least one in each province.
“We need to stop saying that
DNA samples will be taken to
another province for testing and
therefore results will return in a
week. We need to have such
laboratories nearby so that DNA
tests are completed in 48 hours.
“Some legal bodies exploit this
situation and say a particular
case has been dragging on for
too long and should be
withdrawn. We want to avoid
instances where cases of
violence against women and
children are withdrawn for such
petty reasons.”
Public education in rural areas
was paramount so that people
knew their rights and when these
were being violated. The
commission fought for both
men’s and women’s rights.
“We are a gender commission
and that means we work and
help men as well, but we are
biased towards women.
“We act without fear or favour
because we are an independent
institution. The gender
commission will not tire, we will
reach all areas where we are
needed. People need to be
patient with us but in the
meantime report all crimes and
do not protect criminals.”
Two children faint out of hunger
IN DIRE STRAITS: Noxolo Gcorha, the mother of
two little girls who fainted from hunger as she
can not access grants for them without birth
cer tificates
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
NOXOLO Gcorha’s daughters, aged
four and seven, fainted out of
hunger in September in
Enkululekweni zone 4 in Komani.
Gcorha has been struggling to
get her children’s birth certificates
and to register them for grants.
The Rep reporter visited the
family and saw a home with a bed,
two mattresses and bare
cupboards for the family of five,
which includes four children aged
between two and 11.
The electricity to the home has
been cut off.
Their uncle works as a car guard
to try and help. The children’s
father died recently.
Gcorha explained that she had
been called while she was at work
and told that her children had
fainted because of hunger.
She said she had to resign from
where she was working to stay with
her children as the woman who
looked after them, told her that a
relative was coming to the house to
take their food.
She said the relative earns an old
age grant but was buying alcohol
with the money.
She said she had been to the
department of home affairs to get
birth certificates, but had run into
difficulty as the children’s
surnames were different from her
own. She does, however, have a
card from Frontier Hospital,
indicating that they were her
children.
“When my siblings and I got our
identity documents we used our
fat h e r ’s surname. The woman at
home affairs said we were not
supposed to use his surname
because our parents were not
married. We should have used my
m ot h e r ’s surname.”
She said she did not know what
to do after that, as she needed
grants for the children.
Her children were not going to
school as they did not have birth
cer tificates.
Communication officer of the
area’s neighbourhood watch Elliase
Magwayi said it was not the first
time the children had fainted.
Magwayi said, “When I heard the
children had fainted, I came but
could not find their mother. This is
probably because she was working.
“On my arrival, I was shocked to
learn the actual truth and see the
terrible living conditions that this
family has to live under. As a
neighbourhood watch, we will go
door to door collecting money as a
means to provide something to eat
while we wait for the home affairs
and social development process.”
Anyone wanting to help, can call
Magwayi on 073-041 8574 and
079-404 9218.
The Rep has sent the family’s
details to the home affairs
department and has requested
them to assist.
A STALWART in local
government circles and a man
of vast experience, Daniel
Lolwana has expressed his
concern at the state of affairs
in Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipality (EMLM) and is
urging residents to “st o p
being spectators and enhance
the development of our
beloved area”.
He said “it is no secret that
EMLM is in the intensive care
unit” and questioned how a
municipality could function
properly without a municipal
manager and full-time
managers who have to
account to him.
“There are laid-down laws
relating to the appointment of
people acting in these
positions [this must not
exceed three months]
although provision is made for
it to be extended for a further
three months if necessary,” he
added. “In this municipality,
there is total neglect or
deliberate violation of this,
with the aim of collapsing the
municipalit y.”
The former Lukhanji municipal
area (including Ezibeleni
and Whittlesea) thrived, as did
those of Tsolwana and
Ikwanca (through revenue
from farmers in the region and
government grants because
employment opportunities
were minimal) with which
Lukhanji was amalgamated
last year, he maintained.
To demonstrate what he
calls “deliberate sabotage”
Lolwana quotes the fact that
councillors do not even
receive agendas on time and
there are allegations that
people are instructed not to
hand them out.
He questioned how EMLM
would be able to fulfil its
mandate to provide services
and a safe and healthy
environment within its
financial and administration
capacity with neither cash nor
leadership or the capacity and
said the community should be
placed first and the comforts
of councillors should take a
back seat.
Lolwana suggested this was
why the majority of councillors
rejected provincial
intervention and said the
mayor and her family had
been staying in a bed and
breakfast since last year, she
drove an expensive new
vehicle bought by council and
that the speaker also drove an
expensive vehicle at municipal
expense and asked that the
relevant budget be made
public, saying “the only
solution is invoking section
He said portfolio head of
corporate services Noluthando
Nqabisa was incorrect in
ascribing the situation to the
fact that the municipality was
struggling with inherited debt
of R55-million from the merger
of the three municipalities as
Lukhanji had reserves of
R10-million, which EMLM
“blew in three months”,
purchasing expensive
vehicles, excessive travelling
and accommodation for
councillors and purchasing
expensive new furniture for
offices that were “never used”.
He accused the speaker,
Mzoxolo Peter of misleading
councillors and the public.
“Remember, the constitution
Livestock raises
ire of residents
SIVENATHI GOSA
ROAMING cattle in the Komani area
has raised the ire of locals who say
the animals pose a danger to
m ot o r i st s .
A resident of Queensview Park,
Andiswa Shweni, recently approached
The Rep, expressing concern over the
large number of unattended livestock
roaming the area.
“It is infuriating and annoying that
we have to chase the livestock away
to get access to the streets. They also
ruin our vehicles. A neighbour’s car
was written off, but fortunately she
was not harmed.”
Shweni said she had notified their
ward councillor Zuko Mandile about
the matter.
While the cattle have been be
impounded, it is often back in the
streets the following day.
Mandile said the problem was not
only in Queensview Park, but affected
all residential areas.
“People do not take care of their
responsibilities. You will find cattle
roaming at night and in the day. I do
inform the [Enoch Mgijima]
municipality and they are the ones
that impound the livestock, but the
owners have them released again. We
are looking into finding a solid
solution for this serious matter.”
The Rep reported (“Drivers unhappy
with cattle roaming the roads”,
November 11 2016), that there had
been a number of accidents involving
livestock on the roads.
Community Police Forum
community relations officer Tim de
Jongh said, “It is unlawful to allow
livestock to roam in an urban area. It
is extremely dangerous, especially at
night, as drivers are not expecting
livestock on public roads and
definitely not in town.
“I get calls on a regular basis to
have the livestock removed.”
His faith in God a mainstay for Sono
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
LUNGISI author
Mbongeni Vincent
Sono held a book
Mlaunch for his latest
book, titled Before the Sunrise,
which focuses on the dark
moments in a person’s life
before the appearance of the
morning light.
The motivational book
containing 10 chapters, was
launched at the Komani Art
Centre last Saturday.
Sono said during his life
journey he has discovered that
the majority of people did not
persevere long enough to
overcome their problems.
The book was drawn from
lessons he had learnt from his
personal encounter with
challenges.
“I was at a point in my life
where I had almost lost the
baton, which has inspired me to
WANDERING PROBLEM: Stray livestock in a Komani residential area
Michele Lee wrote to The Rep on
motivate others to persevere.”
He said that in order for
people to survive, they should
stick to what they believed in.
“If you believe in God, forget
about other things. Cling to Him
with all your might.”
One of the main reasons
which caused people to lose
hope during dire times, he said,
was due to their inability to
differentiate between life and its
at tachments.
“Most people define
themselves by what they own.
You find people who can not live
without their possessions and
then, after losing them,
terminate their lives.”
“In the book I elaborate on
how life is more important than
“The gang problem has
He said Before the Sunrise will
Fine win for Royals squad
SIMTEMBILE MGIDI
KOMANI Royals Cricket Club made their
home advantage count in their Border
promotional league match against
Masakhane Cricket Club from Mdantsane on
Sunday at a Queen’s College cricket field.
The Royals won by two wickets.
Masakhane won the toss and elected to
bat first, securing 171 in 44.1 overs.
Captain Nikhanye Tyakam scored 60 from
57 balls, hitting eight fours.
R o ya l s ’ win could be greatly attributed to
the tail-enders who kept their cool to keep
their wickets in order.
In what was no walk in the park for the
Royals bowlers, Marvin Groep was the top
bowler, with figures of 10 overs, two
maidens, 26 runs and four wickets.
Viwe Yawa of Royals said, “Marvin once
again proved that most teams in the
promotional league are uncomfortable
against spinners.
Off-break spinner Luyolo Nkosanatook
two for 44 in eight overs.
Royals seemed to have the game in the
bag with the fielding of Masakhane letting
them down on many occasions.
Darryl van der Mescht scored 54 (92), as
he and Groep milked the new ball for all it
was worth.
“We suffered a mini collapse before
Siphiwo Ndaba frustrated the bowlers when
he put on 49 (off 92) in a solid partnership
with Van der Mescht that brought us closer
to the win,” Yawa said.
Royals battled to hold on to their wickets
as they lost three in the 39th over.
Nkosana showed plenty of character,
starting his first shot with a solid cover
drive, attacking Masakhane’s leg spinner to
put (30*) on the score sheet.
He was well supported by Yawa who
scored 14 before Yawa lost his wicket with
an LBW call.
Royals secured their win by reaching
172/8 with five balls remaining and won the
game by two wickets.
Looking back on a year of Komani rugby stars
potential to make it big. Redcliffe finally
realised his dream of playing overseas
and has travelled to Ireland where he
played a couple of matches.
Carlisle Jordaan has just signed a
contract with a team in Scotland that
will see him play there for six months
with an option to renew.
The UJ Varsity Cup player and 7s star
has long been earmarked for greater
things. He will play for Gala Rugby Club
in the Scottish Division 1 league in both
15-man and sevens rugby.
Ntando Mfengu has been a star for
WSU in the Varsity Shield and his
inclusion in the Border Bulldogs team is
imminent.
Brandt Fields was snatched up by the
Sharks Academy, which is also a good
indication of better things to come.
