On page 1 today Christchurch Girls’ High School’s Hannah Bates is doing just that as she continues on her promising swimming path. In July she’s off to the Bahamas for a Commonwealth meet, which could help springboard her to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Realistically though, she is looking further ahead to the 2024 Olympics when she will be in her mid-20s and at the top of her game. The hard yards are getting up just after 5am to train for a couple of hours, off to school and then when she gets home it’s back into the pool again. There’s a quiz night in July and a givealittle page to help Hannah achieve her goals. In Brief PARK UPGRADES The city council has begun upgrading Papanui Domain; Tulett Park, Casebrook; and Carlton Mill Corner, Merivale. Drainage on these fields has been poor in the past, meaning they cannot be played on for a full sports season. The work involves laying new turf and installing better drainage and irrigation. Plunket repairs will cost $15,000 more than planned • By Julia Evans REPAIRS TO the Redwood Plunket rooms may be more costly than initially thought. But the Papanui-Innes Community Board says the facility is needed desperately in the area. In the city Emma Norish council’s draft Annual Plan, $30,000 has been set aside to fix the rooms which were heavily damaged in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. SMART CROSSING To encourage people to use a new pedestrian crossing planned for outside Northlands Shopping Centre, Papanui-Innes Community Board members have asked staff to investigate installing a game. It would be similar to Pong which can be accessed at a crossing on St Asaph St. Funding for any system would come from the Smart Cities programme. FUNDING FOR OUTREACH Burnside resident Lauren Cayford will travel to South Africa with help from the Fendalton- Waimairi-Harewood Community Board. Ms Cayford received $350 to go towards attending the World Outreach nations course in Johannesburg, South Africa. The course will cover a range of topics, including anthropology, cross-cultural communication, world religions and interpersonal relationships.
