DOUBT HAS been cast
over whether the $2.4m
North Beach promenade
project will go ahead in its
current form.
A behind-closed-door
meeting between Development
Christchurch
Ltd and city councillors
revealed problems with financing
the project, which
may put it in jeopardy, the
Pegasus Post has learned.
DCL is a part of
Christchurch City Holdings
Limited, and was
tasked with rejuvenating
New Brighton and its
commercial core.
City councillor David
East said he could not go
into the detail of the meeting
held last Monday but
said there were problems
with “costings.’’
“The coastal promenade
needs a bit more work on
it before it goes ahead at
this stage,” he said.
The promenade was

initially floated by local
community group, the
Community Connection
Nga Ngaru Trust, last
year. It is proposed to be
installed between Waimairi
and North Beach surf
clubs. The promenade was
proposed to be 9m wide
and 900m long.
The good news is the
$5m hot salt water pools
project is looking more
feasible, said Cr East.
“The hot salt water pools
side of things is looking
very positive. But I think
with the promenade it
was more of an indicative
pricing from DCL . . .
councillors want to get the
hot salt water pools, but
the promenade is looking
costly and needs more
work,” he said.
Strategic Urban Rejuvenation
Force co-ordinator
Lesley Fulton said the
community had been
“waiting long enough”
and the sooner the projects
got under way, the
better.
“The promenade would
have benefits for the area,
but a minimal impact I
feel. The hot salt water
pools would be hugely
beneficial, and from a
selfish point of view, I’m
thinking of my own family,
and they’d love it,” she
said.
DCL chief executive
Rob Hall said Monday’s
meeting was an informal
update on progress for
councillors on both the
hot salt water pools and
promenade projects.
“Some final work
needs to be done to
prepare a formal report
for council consideration
and decision-making and
more detail will be able
to be shared publicly at
that stage. Community
feedback will be sought
on all planned projects for
New Brighton,” he said.

News......................................3-6
THERE IS something quite
stirring about watching
young people celebrate
culture. Last week, about
70 schools took part in the
Christchurch Primary Schools
Cultural Festival and we had
photographer Geoff Sloan there
to capture some of the action
(page 7). The performances
were incredibly captivating.
Congratulations to all who
participated.
There is a fantastic article on
page 5 about a recently opened
Wainoni gymnastics club that
is thriving after opening with
just 16 members.
Finally, good and bad news
for the seaside suburbs on the
front page this week. The long
awaited hot salt water pools are
gaining momentum but the
planned promenade has hit a
few road bumps.

Beach barbecue in Brighton
A $9000 barbecue set in a
shipping container and picnic
tables have been installed near
New Brighton’s whale paddling
pool.
The quirky concept came after
Strategic Urban Rejuvenation
Force fundraised $4000 for the
unit and Westpac bank also
made a $5000 donation.
The new tables and barbecue
were installed north of the New
Brighton Library recently and
their arrival celebrated at a
community event.
The Burwood-Pegasus
Community Board decided that
the city council’s transitional
budget for New Brighton should
be spent supporting the SURF
project by providing four picnic
tables with seating.
The barbecue is a unique,
prototype design by local
architect Jason Mill. It is housed
inside a container, making the
barbecue accessible all year.
Nearly 1000 votes were
recorded over two voting
sessions in March, which saw
public barbecues, public art
and shade, and an outdoor
cinema or stage come out as
favourites.
SURF chairwoman Lesley
BBQ IN A BOX: Barbecues can now be had by the community at any time of the year,
thanks to a city council and SURF initiative.
Fulton said the community had
been calling for an area like
this for a long time and it was a
great to see it finished after a six
month process.
Support from local trades
people, who had contributed
free or low-cost labour and
materials, had been fantastic.
“It’s a really exciting start for
the new, New Brighton. Just
making it more of a destination,
and bringing people back and
having them stay here longer,”
she said.
“We’re hoping the barbecue
will be really well used. If it is,
we’ll look to install a similar one
elsewhere along the foreshore. If
it’s not, we’ll move it somewhere
else.”
In Brief
ROAD REPAIRS
Woodham Rd in North
Linwood is closed at the
intersection with Worcester
St for two more months for
major wastewater repairs.
Access to Woodham Rd, east of
Worcester St, will be available
through Sewell St and Rowcliffe
Cres. Eastbound traffic on
Woodham Rd will have to go
through Ngarimu St. A no entry
sign is in place in Woodham Rd
at Kerrs Rd and at Ngarimu St.
Hills Rd in Richmond at the
Warrington St and Shirley
Rd intersection is having
road repairs done. Workers
have been in place from
Sunday. Hills Rd will be oneway
northbound near the
intersection and from last night
will be one-way southbound.
Detours will be in place.
CORRECTION
Last week, the Pegasus Post
reported in a community event
titled earthquake anniversary
kite-fly and giveaway, that 100
kites were to be loaned to any
children who wanted to take
part. This was incorrect. The
kites were not to be loaned out
to anyone, they were to be given
to anyone who wanted one. The
Pegasus Post apologises for this
error.

Check the heat lamp
in your bathroom
• By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk
Management Officer
NOT EVERYONE will be
aware that the Fire Service are
responding with St John to
serious illness incidents.
Apparently some people have
been quite upset to see a great
big fire truck arrive in their time
of need, possibly thinking their
call has been misunderstood
and the wrong service has arrived.
That’s not the case. Both
services will be sent. Sometimes
that means our crew will arrive
first.
We’re not paramedics but we
are all first-aid trained and there
are times our crews’ input is
utterly invaluable to our ambulance
colleagues.
Every bit of help might just
make the difference.
Twenty-one calls this week
were in this category, one fifth
of all our call-outs.
A bit of a blast from the past
in Halswell this week, where
a three-way light/heat-lamp/
extractor in a bathroom ceiling
caught on fire.
Some years ago this problem
was more prevalent.
New installations require the
fan to automatically operate
when the heat-lamp is turned
on, but previously, and obviously
in the unit in Halswell, the
heat-lamps could be turned on
alone.
They tended to overheat the
surrounding plastic and sometimes
ignite.
If you have one of these, check
it. If both functions don’t operate
together, make sure they are
both on every time you use the
heat-lamp and consider getting
your electrician to make the
alteration.
Might save some tears.
Spring is here.
That’s a reason to feel good.
Keep fire safe as we head
toward another summer.
Call for more crossings in
mall after car hits woman
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
MORE PEDESTRIAN crossings
are being lobbied for in New
Brighton Mall after an 88-yearold
was hit by a car.
Vera Hewison was crossing the
road outside Paper Plus when
the incident occurred. She was
treated in hospital for hip and
back injuries.
Friend Vanessa Taylor is now
campaigning on Mrs Hewison’s
behalf to get more pedestrian
crossings.
She had a meeting with
Burwood-Pegasus Community
Board chairwoman Andrea
Cummings and member Glenn
Livingstone to the issue. It was
agreed that at the board’s next
meeting it would be discussed.
Mrs Hewison, had finished
shopping at the Paper Plus store
and was walking back home
when she was hit.
Mrs Hewison stayed at hospital
overnight and was discharged
the following day, but had to return
a further two times seeking
treatment for injuries to her hip
and back.

New dog rules start in spring
New rules around dogs, and what their owners
are required to do, are in effect from Thursday
1 September 2016.
Major changes to the general rules include:
• All dog owners must carry plastic bags to clean up dog
poo when in public places.
• When dog owners have their dog off-leash in a
public place, they must have it “under effective
control”, which means being aware of where their
dog is and what it is doing, and ensuring it is
responsive to commands and not creating a nuisance.

Gymnasts jump on club
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
A WAINONI gymnastics club
may have only opened in May,
but has already had a 500 per
cent increase in membership.
Te Wero Gymnastics has had
people from across the city wanting
to join, with membership
jumping from 16 to 90 since it
opened.
The club is now aiming to
reach 180 members before the
end of the year.
General manager Tamika
McCallum is the only full-time
employee, and works alongside
two part-time senior coaches
with international experience,
and three junior coaches.
She said they are not out to
poach other gyms’ members, but
a lot of their new recruits have
come from other clubs around
the city.
“We’ve had great feedback
from members who have come
from other clubs around town.
They just come in and they
love our facilities and our
coaches,
so they stay,” Ms McCallum said.
“We’ve even had some that
have come in mid-way through
a term after paying term fees for
another club, so we don’t charge
them, we just let them join in for
that term,” she said.
The club is now aiming to grow
their membership to 180 by the
end of the school year.
“We just missed out on reaching
99 members by the start of
term three, so we’re hopeful we
can double our membership by
the end of the year,” Ms McCallum
said.

POTENTIALLY life
threatening situations at the
Wainoni Avonside Community
Services Trust have been
helped out by a random act of
kindness.
During a recent Thursday
lunchtime, trust co-ordinator
Betty Chapman mentioned that
it had been in need of a defibrillator
ever since the Wainoni
Medical Centre relocated away
from the area four years ago.
Member Barbara Hayles then
offered to buy a defibrillator
for the trust, worth more than
$3000.
She also paid for a defibrillator
tutorial, to teach the coordinators
and volunteers at the
KIND ACT:
Barbara Hales
(right) hands
the defibrillator
she donated to
Betty Chapman.
Act of kindness
could save lives
trust how to use it.
Mrs Chapman said the trust
is “extremely indebted” to Mrs
Hayles for her random act of
kindness.
“We were just talking about
needing more first-aid at the
trust, and doctors had come to
say that we should really have
[a defibrillator],” Mrs Chapman
said.
“It was discussed and the next
Thursday she said I want to buy
you that. I said you’re kidding
me, but she said no,” Mrs Chapman
said.
The alternative without the
defibrillator would have been a
“10 minute drive to Pak ‘n’ Save
and back”, which could be a
vital amount of time if someone
is having a medical emergency.

NEWLY RELEASED data on
city councillors’ attendance at
meetings shows eastern suburbs’
incumbents have good records.
Of the 83 city council meetings
between October 24, 2013, and
July 28 this year, Cr Livingstone
has only missed two, while Cr East
has been absent for five.
There were also 63 Burwood-
Pegasus Community Board meetings
between October 29, 2013,
and July 18 this year.
Cr East has missed 12 of those
meetings – more than any other
board member.
He told Pegasus Post his absences
were due to other council
commitments.
“Nine times out of 10 [for the
absences], there will be another
council commitment that I would
have had to go to,” he said.
Community board member Tim
Baker had the highest attendance
rate, having only missed two
from 63. Cr Livingstone was close
behind on 59, then member Linda
Stewart on 57, and Stan Tawa
and Tim Sintes were tied on 56.
Chairwoman Andrea Cummings
attended 54.

During their time at the camp, pupils visited a farm, went
swimming and trampolining, fired air rifles, tried their hand at
archery and went hiking.

Our People
‘Evel’ Knievel of roller skating
Kay Newton spends
her spare time in
safety gear speeding
around a track on roller
skates. She spoke to
Caitlin Miles about
how she got into roller
derbies and her time
representing New
Zealand at world cup
competitions
FIRSTLY I have to ask what
your roller derby name is?
It’s Evilknevil, I picked it
because it just worked really well
with the fact my name is Kay.
Can you tell me why you decided
to get into roller derbies?
There was myself and a couple
of others talking about it one day
and we decided to go to watch
a practice and see what was
involved and it just seemed really
fun so we thought we would do
it.
Can you explain to me what is
involved in a roller derby?
Well, it’s played on an oval
track and you have 14 people
from each team on the side lines.
But there are only five people on
the track at any one time. But
players rotate throughout the
game so that’s why there is so
many. There is a jammer who
is the one designated to score
points by lapping people on the
opposite team and then the other
four are blockers. Most people
can be blockers, you can have
any body type really, but jammers
are usually a bit slighter
built and have good stamina.
Jams, which are the sessions,
have a time limit of two minutes
as well. It’s hard to explain, but
it’s a lot of fun.
Are you a jammer?
I was for a few years. Not any
more though, because we have a
lot of jammers in our team so we
need more blockers. I like being
able to do both so I don’t mind.
Is being a blocker quite
violent?
I would avoid using the word
violent. It’s not as brutal as people
think. There are a lot of referees
involved in the game and, if
they catch you doing something
intentional towards another
player that can hurt them, you’ll
be given a penalty or possibly
taken off. There is only a certain
area on the body where you can
hit people and that’s not above
the shoulders and it’s not below
the knees. You can’t elbow people
or punch people, or anything like
that. It’s like any contact sport,
you can get hurt. But I have had
worse injuries from soccer than
from roller derbies believe it or
not.
Really? I always thought it
was very violent?
A lot of people do, but we have
a lot of protective gear as well.
Have you had any bad hits?
None that have made me want
to stop playing. I have had a few
where I’ve thought, oh, that’s a
goodie or that’s going to hurt
later, but I’ve always got back
into it.
Could you roller skate before
getting into roller derbies?
Yeah, I have been roller skating
ever since I was a kid, so I had
the skills before getting involved.
I thought it would be a fun
chance to do something I really
enjoyed as a kid.
How long have you been
ROLLER BLADER:
New Brighton’s Kay
Newton has been
involved in roller
derbies since 2009
and goes by the
name Evilknevil
when she’s on the
roller derby track.
involved in roller derbies?
Since September of 2009. I
have played for the same team
the whole time as well. There
were quite a few of us just discovering
what roller derby was.
Where you nervous before
your first game?
It was so long ago now I can’t
really remember, but yeah, I
think I would have been. I mean
who wouldn’t be? I think it’s the
same feeling before playing in
any sport. I was nervous and
anxious, but I was excited too.
It’s basically the same feeling
before any game I think. But you
practice and train before, so you
are prepared for the game.
How do you train?
I don’t want to give too many
secrets away about our training.
We practice layouts and tactics
and things like that, making sure
the team works well and everyone
is on the same page. But we
have a really strong core team,
so we already work really well
together.
Do you balance work with
training?
I work for Vivace Espresso. I
drive around the city teaching
people how to make coffee so
they can keep Christchurch caffeinated
basically.
Has much changed in the
game over the years?
The rules have changed a
bit over the years. Our rules
come from the American roller
derby league. So when they make
changes or alter the rules of the
game or safety rules or something,
we do the same. So there
have been small changes over the
years.
Have you noticed roller derby
change in popularity?
I can’t really say if the sport has
gained or lost popularity, but our
team has always done well. We
have had members come and go
for various reasons; they don’t
want to do this anymore, or they
want to pursue different things,
or they decide to have a family,
so they come and go throughout
the sport, but we always have a
great team.
What are some of your
highlights from roller derby?
There have been a couple.
I don’t want to blow my own
trumpet, but I represented New
Zealand at the 2011 World Cup
in Toronto and the 2014 World
Cup in Dallas. That required a lot
of fundraising because it’s not a
cheap event to take part in. I was
really shocked actually because
my team presented me with a
cheque to help me out. I cried
when they did that. I was really
surprised and couldn’t believe
they had given me that support.
They are some of my really close
friends.
You’ve got a big roller derby
meet coming up as well, right?
Yeah, this weekend actually.
We’re facing off against Wellington,
which will be a really good
game. We are currently ranked
third in New Zealand and they
are number one. We played them
previously and they beat us by
150 points, so we really want
to redeem that. Really looking
forward to facing off.

of new tissue giving it powerful antiaging
properties that can help reduce
lines, blemishes, scars, stretchmarks,
dry or scaly skin, skin redness and
repair damaged skin.
It also possesses anti-inflammatory,
antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant
and sun protective properties and
is commonly used on most skin
ailments including rosacea, pimples,
ulcers and sores, acne and acne scars,
psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, rashes,
blisters, skin eruptions, warts, insect
bites and stings, athlete’s foot, burns,
sunburn, cuts and cracks, nappy rash,

Essential nutrients
for health & vitality
Easy access to
health & mobility
After noticing patients were experiencing
gut, bowel and digestive issues that
often led to more serious chronic
health conditions, two Australian
Naturopaths conducted extensive
research. This revealed that
although the patients were
generally eating good food, they
were not obtaining all the nutrients
required for good health, with one of
the main problems being the digestive
system.
Also, with the soils crops are grown in
being depleted of many trace elements and
other essential nutrients, the crops are also
depleted.
If we do not obtain all the required
nutrients, our body will compensate
to some degree, but a lack of too many
nutrients will eventually lead to health
issues. Knowing this, the naturopaths
developed Vital Greens, a nutrient-dense
powdered formula that provides superior
absorption and comprehensive nutrition.
Vital Greens contains a balanced blend
of nutritionally rich vegetables, fruits,
minerals, vitamins, essential fatty acids,
plant and herbal extracts, superfoods,
powerful antioxidants, probiotics, essential
amino acids, digestive enzymes and fibre,
plus an alkalising pea protein.
Anyone can benefit from it, including
people in poor health, those recovering
from injury or sickness, children, athletes,
poor eaters and the elderly. It is gluten,
wheat and dairy free, and provides more
energy and endurance, better sleep, a more
positive mood, improved eyesight and
overall better health.
