TENS OF millions are being
spent on the new Haeata
Community Campus, but
critics say there won’t be enough
playgrounds.
The onus to build extra playgrounds
may fall to the school’s
board of trustees if the Ministry
of Education is unwilling to pay
an estimated $20,000 to $25,000
per additional playground.
Haeata is one of four schools
around the country which the
MoE has paid $298 million in
total to build.
Haeata is a new super school
opening for term one next year
and is being built on the site of
the former Aranui High School.
It will see the closure of Aranui
High and Primary, as well as
Avondale and Wainoni schools.
Coastal-Burwood Community
Board member and Aranui resident
Tim Baker said the MoE “are
not providing” enough support
for the board of trustees.
“From what I hear [the school
is] re-looking at the plans and it

he said.
Mr Baker said that the MoE’s
projected two junior playgrounds,
hard court area, and sports field
for the school will not be enough
for the estimated roll of 930
students.
MoE’s head of sector enablement
and support Kim Shannon
said the school has been designed
to cater for up to 1800 students.
The MoE’s head of education
infrastructure Jerome Sheppard
said the most recent landscape
plan of Haeata shows two playgrounds
suitable for junior pupils.
“It currently shows that there
are two playground areas for the
junior school, and one hard court
play area for the senior school.
These are in addition to outdoor
learning areas and the sports
fields.
“It is up to the school to decide
how they use different learning
areas, including the playgrounds,”
he said. •Turn to page 5

IT LOOKS like the community
will need to come up with the cash
to provide more play areas at the
new Haeata Community Campus
(see page 1).
The Government has spent tens
of millions of dollars on the mega
education complex but word on
the street is that there isn’t enough
playground-type areas to accommodate
the big roll when the campus
opens early next year.
It’s also a political hot potato.
New principal Andy Kai Fong
wouldn’t talk directly to Pegasus
Post about the issue, saying he
would respond through the Ministry
of Education, and the school’s
board of trustees chairwoman
Haneta Pierce didn’t return calls.
The MoE says there will be
enough play areas, so that appears
to be good enough for Kai Fong

Strong message from performers
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
AN ANTI-SUICIDE play
performed by 30 Pasifika actors
is close to their heart – they
have lost two cast members in
tragic circumstances in the last
four years.
No Limits is an initiative set
up by Ara Institute of Technology
in 2012 supporting Pasifika
youth through drama and performing
arts.
In December last year, Tala
Mailei, 17, was found dead in a
Christchurch park.
The death is before the
Coroner.
In late 2012, TJ Pelenato
tragically drowned in the
recreation lake at Pegasus.
TJ was swimming with a
group of friends and fellow No
Limits cast members.
Tala was an up-and-coming
rugby league star, and played for
the under 20 Warriors.
He was a founding member of
No Limits, where actors range
from 12 to 25-years-old.
Now Tala’s brother Alesana
is part of the cast portraying an
anti-suicide message. He is the
youngest member of the group.
The group put together performances
with the aim to send
a message to audience members,
this year’s performance is called

PROGRESS ON SPORTS HUB
Parklands Bowling Club and
Parklands Rugby Club’s combined
sports hub project is gaining
traction. The two clubs teamed up
in the hopes of funding a multimillion
dollar sports hub project
for the community, but they need
financial support to make it happen.
Bowling club president Wayne Eden
said after applying for funding, the
project is through to the second
round of applications with the Rata
Foundation and other funders.
SUPPORT FOR POOL PROJECT
More than 500 suggestions have
been made in relation to the New
Brighton whale pool and hot
salt water pools project. Public
consultation opened last month
and will close on November 5.
Development Christchurch Ltd
chief executive officer Rob Hall
said the response from the local
community has been phenomenal,
with strong support for a
development in the area and a lot of
ideas about what this could include.
BID TO LOWER SPEED
Linwood Avenue, Te Waka Unua
and St Anne’s Catholic schools
want the city council to lower the
speed limits and install flashing
speed signs to improve safety. The
schools are banding together to get
speed limits lowered for the safety
of pupils.

Veterinary practice
Lymphoma
Moya is a beautiful 4yr old Bull Mastiff cross who
until earlier this year had been a perfectly healthy
young dog. Her owners had noticed that over the
past few days she hadn’t been quite her normal
bouncy self, had gone off her food and developed
a swelling under her throat. They bought her
to the clinic and although on examination she
seemed quite well she not only had enlarged
lymph nodes around her neck but also around the
front of her shoulders and at the back of her hind
legs. Causes of this could be infection, an allergic
reaction, immune mediated disease (where the
body kills off its own cells) or cancer. Fine needles
aspirates (FNA’s) were taken of Moya’s lymph
nodes and sent to a veterinary laboratory. Taking
an FNA is a painless procedure and in the majority
of animals can be done without sedation. A small
needle is inserted into the tissue that you want to
sample and a small amount of cells are collected
and put onto a slide.
Unfortunately, the results that came back from the
laboratory confirmed that Moya had a malignant
form of cancer known as Lymphoma. This form of
cancer is one of the most commonly seen in dogs
and often involves multiple organs around the
body. To find out where the cancer had spread to
Moya had blood tests and thoracic and abdominal
x-rays and ultrasound scans performed. The
Lymphoma had spread to organs within her chest
and abdomen as well as within her lymph nodes –
she had high stage B cell-Lymphoma.
The results were discussed with her owners who
decided that they would like to go ahead with
treating her further. With this type of Lymphoma
treatment is not surgical, but medical; usually
with chemotherapy. We are in contact with a
number of specialist Veterinary Oncology
clinics in Australia and we
contacted them straight away.
Within 24 hours they had
produced an entire report on
Moya, her cancer and different
chemotherapy options that
they recommended. These
treatment options varied
from palliative care with
steroids through to multidrug
chemotherapy options.
Moya’s family decided to go
ahead with the preferred
primary treatment option
lasting 15 weeks.
Moya started her
chemotherapy the following
day coming into the clinic
every Friday for a blood
test to check her red and
white blood cell levels and for
administration of her drugs
intravenously. Throughout the
entire duration of treatment,
she was very well behaved and
tolerated the chemotherapy
drugs extremely well, with
hardly any noticeable side
effects. She was always ready
for her treats and walk after her
drugs had been given!
At the end of the 15 weeks
Moya was in complete remission
and four weeks later still appears
to be. Her owners report that

she is better than ever and when she visited last
week she was rolling around as normal for her
tummy to be tickling whilst we were trying to
take her blood test! There is a chance that the
Lymphoma will come back but for the moment
she is happy, has a new lease of life and is enjoying
her time at home with her family.
Informing a client that their special friend has
a form of cancer, is one of the awful parts of
my job. It is such a dreaded disease with often
fatal consequences and often at the time of
diagnosis, the disease has well advanced. Due
to many cancers having
malignant potential, speed
of diagnosis and treatment
is necessary to have any
chance of remission. Many
hard decisions have to be
made and that is when you
can rely on us to do our job.
We have the necessary skills
and diagnostics to diagnose
the type of cancer your pet
has and then we employ
the specialized services of
Oncology consultants in
Australia to get the most
successful chemotherapy
protocol for your pet. That’s
often the hardest part
as the administration of
chemotherapy usually goes
really smoothly. Pets rarely
have side effects, the drugs
are painless if given properly,
your pet is treated as an
outpatient and we often see
improvement quickly, if we are
going to be successful. I have
first hand experience in the
process as my beautiful dog
Lola developed kidney cancer
last year and received four
rounds of chemo. If anyone
wants to discuss the process
of cancer diagnosis and
treatment for your pet, please
give the clinic a call.

A reminder that in the city boundaries

I say sort of obliged because our officers

Pride comes with garden opening
• By Fraser Walker-Pearce
SMILE DIAL chief executive
officer Kelly Dugan admitted
“there might be tears” when
his son and daughter are the
first to experience a project he’s
worked on for three and a half
years.
The New Brighton sensory
garden in Rawhiti Domain is
under a week away from opening
to the public, after being a
dream of Mr Dugan’s since 2013.
He said the garden has been
designed for all kids, with special
needs children particularly
in mind.
“It’s looking spectacular now
and we’re halfway there, it’s
better than I ever could’ve imagined
. . . there might be a few
[tears]. It’ll just
be a moment of
relief and then
pride, I’m pretty
proud it’s come
this far,” he said.
Mr Dugan
(left) said the
design and look of the garden
has developed as construction
has progressed, but ever since he
first thought of the garden, there
was a plan in place.
“The vision of it being accessible
and having edible section

and the sights and smells has
always been the crux of it,” he
said.
The garden will be officially
opened this Sunday at 11am,
after speeches by Mr Dugan and
other officials involved with its
construction.
“Once it’s finished [my
daughter Lucia] will be the first
to go in, her and my 18-yearold
son who’s come back from
university,” he said.
The garden was funded and
built through outside sources.
Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure
Rebuild Team was a
source of funding and some staff
volunteered their time during
construction.
“It’s all volunteer run . . . I was
talking to a guy on site a wee
while back and we estimated
it to be worth about $500,000
when it’s all finished,” Mr
Dugan said.
He said he worked out that
worth through looking at the
volunteer man hours, “the teams
of people, the excavators, designers,”
and other services that were
voluntarily provided.
“There’s a whole raft of skills
involved here. If we had to pay
them all it’d be very expensive,”
he said.

PEGASUS POST
Eroding the value of sport
Reader Susan Bragg
responds to a recent
New Zealand
Rugby League
southern
zone general
manager Steve
Martin talks
about the
choices of our
children in sport
Throughout our lives we are all
confronted with choices.
The decisions that we make in
connection with these choices
will dictate not only the direction
that our lives take but influence
the vast reservoir of experiences
that we can call upon as we move
forward in life.
This is very true in sport where
young people are more and more
given numerous opportunities
to try many different sports and
recreational activities.
For traditionalists this has been
pointed to as one of the reasons
that some team sports in particular
are battling for numbers.
The plethora of choice sees many
young people choosing to taste
rather than consume.
It has been claimed that this
erodes the value of sport, as key
values such as persistence and perseverance
aren’t being taught when
children only flip in and flip out of
activities and don’t commit fully to
what they take up.
It is important, however, that
we seek to allow children to have
as many meaningful experiences
as we can so that in choosing they
have to make judgements about
what is of value to them and what
is not.
It is the job of the sports or
recreational activity themselves to
provide a meaningful experience
that instils those values that sport
can provide.
Young people will persist and
persevere if there is a reason to.
Quite often the reason for this is
that they enjoy what they are doing
and want to continue. Or that the
quality of the experience is such
that it is worth them sticking with
it. This is what sport organisations
must think about.
In order to achieve that sports
must look at how they present
their sport. How do the participants
want to consume the sport.
When is it played, where is it
played, what support is there to
become proficient or to excel? All
of these are questions that increasingly
sports need to consider.

I was very
disappointed
to read Linda
Stewart’s words
about Andrea

almost sounds
like sour grapes,
perhaps she thinks
she should have
been chair?
However, how
many were there on
that board? Did they all feel
like that? If so, why wasn’t it
dealt with much earlier if that
were the truth?
I totally disagree with her
words – Andrea has been at
every possible event held in
our area, I have been at a lot
of them as well. I saw Linda
at very few of those events.
Andrea was sleeves up and
helping as well, not just making
an appearance.
I also believe that most
of New Brighton and South

know who Andrea
is, have heard her
speak and/or have
spoken with her. I
am unsure of her
contact with North
New Brighton, but
I have friends there
who also all know
of her.
Linda Stewart Linda saying
Andrea was disconnected
with the area
is totally untrue
– in fact if it wasn’t

I would not have
ever heard of Kim

wasn’t for the Tiny

have spoken to
Linda Stewart. She
Andrea Cummings has always been off
to the side unapproachable.
Sorry, but her words were
ungracious but worse, they
were mean and certainly not
in the spirit of good competition.
I believe they should have
been said before the election
when they were allegedly
pertinent, not the day after
the election when Andrea had
worked so hard on this campaign.
Nobody deserves that.
We said:

for example like in McDonald’s,
would hopefully be more
seagull-proof, however, seagulls
will adapt and may eventually
work out a way of getting their
fix.
Merilyn Cooper – Clever
seagulls.
Jeff Bell – I read an article
online where New Zealand’s
seagull population is dropping
and they will be endangered in
30 years, according to ornithologists.
Doesn’t commonsense tell
us that these birds have evolved
now to rely on human scraps
as part of their survival – they
have become scavengers. Back in
the 70s they used to live at rubbish
dumps because mankind
provided a feed on an open tip
face – now they rely on rubbish
bins. The ibis bird in Australia is
in the same scenario.
Chessa Crow – It’s not the
bin design. It’s people and lack
of collection. I walk the beach
every day and see overflowing
bins, especially after a weekend
of wonderful weather where the
suburb is crammed with visitors.
Inevitably the rubbish from the
overflowing bins is what blows
around and makes a mess. I have
sent several ‘snap, send, solve’
pictures to the city council to ask
for the rubbish to be collected
before the mess gets messier but,
the wind whips in fast out here.
More bins and more frequent
collection is actually the answer,
not a problem with bin design.
Kevin Garty – Complicating
the uncomplicated, one contractor
is all that’s needed. Easier to
hold accountable as well. This
is not a contract for the NASA
Pluto probe.
Ann Carey – Very few bins in
the city at all. Stupid.
Lyle Robinson – Who’s paying
for it? Roads first.
We said:
“It gives people the
impression that they’re
driving into a dump. Like it’s
not loved and cared for.”
New Brighton residents
will have to put up with
a potholed and cracked
Pages Rd until at least the
end of the year – and they
are not happy. Stronger
Christchurch Infrastructure
Rebuild Team removed
planned repairs to the road,
between Anzac Dr and the
Pages Rd bridge, after it
was decided last year the
bridge would be repaired
rather than rebuilt. But
resident and Keep QEII in
the East group chairwoman
Jo Zervos (above) is not
going to put up with it. She
has started a petition to get
urgent action over the state
of the road.
You said:
Diane Hay – It’s simply not
fair! They pay their rates! Why
should they put up with it?
Ann Carey – It’s awful to
look at and so frustrating to deal
with, I feel so very sorry for the
people who have to live in the
midst of all this mess.
Ann Robinson – No, it’s
not right, but will our esteemed
mayor does anything other than
form a committee to look into
the reason why Pages Rd is still
not fixed?
Lyle Robinson – Well when
you build on the wetlands the
ground keeps moving. It’s happening
all over New Zealand.
Geo tech weren’t around when
Pages Rd and New Brighton
was formed 100 years back. It
sucks I know. That’s why the
west and south side of town is
growing fast cause they’re on
better ground. Build a flyover
like Paparoa in the Bay of Plenty
move the road to harder ground
for the future.
Luke Boyce – Got the
lawns mowed today if that’s any
consolation. Westbound lane by
the bus stop still has the terrible
smell (sewerage) stormwater
issue. Snap, send and solve has
had it logged since January and
twice before but never got a call
back as told and the roading
crew never fixed it as told. ECan
just doesn’t respond.
Ken Weston – In the
United Kingdom that would
be considered a well made
road!
Spotted any lonely cones?
There are a lot of lost, lonely road cones out there. We want to bring them home.
We’re tidying up the streets as the SCIRT programme winds down.
Please help us track down stray cones no longer on the job. We’ll put them back to
work, or send them off to the giant cone melting pot in the sky.
The CONEMOBILE is coming your way.
SCIRT’s CONEMOBILE is hitting the streets to collect any road cones that have gone

Looking after
your teeth
Visiting the dentist is often put off yet looking after our
teeth helps preserve them and assists our overall health.
Dr Keith Chiang has operated the Fendalton Dental
Surgery since relocating from the CBD in 2011. He has
special interest in complex oral surgical procedures and
intravenous sedation, whilst looking after his wonderful
patients with general dentistry skills.
Due to increased demand for cosmetic and geriatric
dentistry, Keith approached Dr Zohnia McNeill, an
experienced clinician with a proven clinical
track record, to join his team.
“Zohnia is a professional with extremely high standards
and is very precise; something her patients appreciate,
along with her relaxed friendly manner,” says Keith.
Zohnia and Keith will focus on their specific and
passion-driven dentistry niches. Zohnia will work on the
cosmetic side of the practice, looking after general checkups
and dentistry work including partial and full denture
work, root canal treatments, implant crowns, porcelain
crowns, bridges and veneers. Keith will concentrate on
his special area interest: surgical procedures including
impacted wisdom teeth, correction of soft and hard
tissue lesions, surgical implant placements, and providing
intravenous sedation where required.
Patients, who decide it is time to transition to dentures,
perhaps due to extensive tooth loss or long-term gum
disease, will benefit from both Zohnia and Keith’s skills.
Zohnia will make the new dentures then Keith will
surgically extract the teeth and deliver the dentures so
patients need not go elsewhere for this service.
The warm friendly team
welcomes you to come and
experience expert clinical care.
Working alongside Keith and Zohnia are two fully
qualified dental assistants, Helen and Megan with Aysha
on reception as the patient’s care co-ordinator.
The warm friendly team welcomes you to come and
experience expert clinical care.
Fendalton Dental Surgery is open Monday to Friday,
from 8.30am until 5pm, located at the high profile
corner of Idris and Glandovey Roads. They can be

Replacement dentures
now just a phone call
away with 3D technology
Keeping up-to-date with the latest
techniques in denture technology is
one of the keys to the success of John
Batchelor’s company, Duchenne Dental, so
it’s no surprise that John has been closely
following the development of 3D printing
of dentures and dental implants.
“I knew it was something that would be
of enormous benefit to our patients,” he
explains. “When I was confident in the
advanced technology and its affordability,
then I knew it would be a good option.”
His research took him to the bi-annual
International Dental Show in Cologne and
to some of the world’s leading dental and
IT companies, helping John decide that the
timing was right to bring this technology to
New Zealand.
“I formed relationships with leading
companies in dental scanning technology
and 3D printing in several countries. We
now have the technology and expertise to
ensure our clients here in New Zealand
receive world class treatment and
products.”
Unexpected client benefits
Duchenne now 3D print all their chrome
frames and partial bases, and have also
started using 3D print technology in full
upper and lower dentures.
John says there are numerous benefits
to Duchenne’s clients, including
providing patients with a quicker and
more economical service, and dentures
and implants that are more accurate and
personalised.
“A bonus is that all models are stored
digitally so wherever you are, if you need
a replacement denture or tooth, we can
quickly and easily print one. And in many
cases patients don’t even need to visit the
surgery!”
Duchenne Dental has manufactured over
300 partial dentures and both they and
their patients are delighted with the results.

Pine bark may support brain
function
Recent news from Auckland University
of Technology has people excited about a
pine bark extract called Enzogenol. AUT
reported that patients suffering memory
loss and other brain problems after a
traumatic brain injury recovered better
when taking Enzogenol compared to a
control group.
Enzogenol is not a new product, though.
In fact, it was developed at Canterbury
University and has been in our health
food shops for over 10 years. According to
ENZO Nutraceuticals, the company that
produces the product, a number of research
studies have shown how Enzogenol can
help improve brain function and support
healthy blood circulation.
The amazing thing is, it is made from
the bark of New Zealand Pinus Radiata
with an extraction method that uses only
purified water. Apparently, the pine bark
is full of healthy plant compounds that
are naturally part of our diet when we eat
fruits and vegetables. Yet, the pine bark is
loaded with these natural antioxidant and
anti-inflammatory compounds and makes
a great starting material for this health
product. Keen on a chewing a bit of pine
bark?

“Treadle” for
Healthy Feet
“Treadling” on an Aircycle circulation booster is a highly effective

Improve Prostate
Health Naturally!
The prostate is a small
walnut shaped male organ
located beneath the urinary
bladder and wrapped around
the urethra or urinary tube.
It is of little significance for
most men until the late 40’s
when for a large percentage
of men it tends to enlarge
and affect normal urination
by restricting flow through the
urethra. This condition is known
as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH.
BPH reduces the ability of the bladder
to evacuate completely causing common
symptoms like wanting to urinate more
frequently (especially annoying at night
and as it affects sleep quality), difficulty
starting urination, dribbling after urination
and pain with urination.
The word benign in BPH is very
significant as it means an enlargement of
the prostate that isn’t cancer. However BPH
should always be diagnosed by a M.D.,
as there is always the chance of prostate
cancer. Once diagnosed as BPH it can often
be managed quite well with herbal and
nutritional remedies and without the side
effects of prescription drugs used for this
condition.
Saw Palmetto is a herb that has been
used for centuries for BPH of the prostate.
A review of 18 doubleblinded
studies found an
average improvement of 72%
of BPH symptoms in Saw
Palmetto users. Researchers
have found Saw Palmetto
to inhibit the formation of
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
and DHT is the main reason
for the prostate to enlarge, and
to be a risk factor for prostate
cancer and hair loss.
Phellodendron amurense inner bark is
another herb that has been found to protect
against BPH and recent research has shown
it to be protective against prostate tumor
development in laboratory studies.
Lycopene is a potent antioxidant with
numerous health benefits including cancer
and BPH protective benefits.
Fatty acids from the seeds of Pumpkin,
Evening Primrose and Flax have been
shown to be supportive of prostate and
general good health.

THE ABBA SHOW SET TO
REIGNITE ABBA-MANIA
THE ABBA Show jets in for a full national
tour this month, playing at the Isaac Theatre
Royal on Wednesday 9th November.
Following more than 4000 international
performances to date, including recent tours of
North America and South Africa, the show’s
NZ tour will take in an exhausting 22 different
venues in just 34 days.
Far from being ‘just another cover band’,
The ABBA Show is a full-scale concert
experience and stage show featuring 2.5 hours
of live musical performance with a live band,
replica costumes, theatrical lighting and effects,
and all the ABBA hits. And despite Mamma
Mia (the musical) still doing the rounds,
promoter John Van Grinsven from Showtime
Australia is confident that fans will recognize
the distinct and worthwhile experience that
The ABBA Show offers.
“They’re completely different shows.
Mamma Mia is a great musical but The ABBA
Show does more of an authentic concert
experience. We’ve worked really hard to make
it just the way the fans will remember it if they
were lucky enough to see the originals perform
live. It really is a unique show.”
