Västervik all year round 

Being a tourist manager in a tourist 

paradise like Västervik has its sides. At 

least 99% of them are positive. It may be 

a question as to how we make the archipelago 

even more accessible, or how we can get the 

tourist season to last all year round? And every 

autumn all current issues, developments, 

reflections of the past year, and news for the 

coming year are all summarized in a brochure, 

the one you are holding in your hand. It is not 

always so easy, because in a region like Västervik 

municipality where there is so much to do and 

see, it would require several hundred pages if 

everyone were to get the space they deserve. We 

now have 68 pages. Therefore, we have chosen a 

new approach where we offer a pleasant reading 

experience by highlighting selected parts and 

allowing you to meet some of the people who 

make Västervik one of Sweden’s most popular

The purpose of this entire brochure is to provide a balanced picture 

of the rich variety of activities available in Västervik municipality. 

But to broaden the perspective a little, we decided to let an 

exceptional member of our staff Amanda Bergstén provide some 

tips here and there throughout the brochure. Amanda is 22 years 

old and is studying international marketing at the University of 

Halmstad, but during the summer she works at the Tourist

Reality check 

Västervik 

Västervik is a place where there is always something going on. In 1517 and 1677 the city was 

burned to the ground by the Danes and the Dutch, in 1710 it was hit by the plague, and in the 

late 1700s Västervik established itself as one of Northern Europe’s most important ship-building 

towns. In modern times, Västervik, among other things, has contributed to the international arena with 

ploughs from Överum, stoves and food mixers from Ankarsrum, smart storage from Elfa, fast boats from 

Marström and Windy, fences from Gunnebo and entertainers of the highest class in the form of the music 

legend Björn Ulvaeus (from Abba) and tennis ace Stefan Edberg. In recent years, several large companies 

have set up business here in the commercial sector. The most recent being Biltema, ICA Maxi and Subway. 

To get a balanced picture of the area, we asked three local experts to answer three questions about Västervik’s 

past, present and future. 

HISTORY 

Olof Nimhed, 51 years old, Museum 

Director, Västervik museum. 

From a historical perspective 

when was Västervik’s period of 

greatness? 

“Västervik has had steady 

development historically speaking. In 

the mid 1700’s, the town benefitted 

greatly from developments in the 

shipbuilding and marine industry, 

and in the mid-1800s, the town was 

the largest in relation to other 

communities in the country. In the 

early 1900s the town was 

industrialized with strong 

population growth as a result. Its 

ability to adapt in the early 2000s 

has also been a success factor.” 

Name three historical areas in 

the municipality not to be 

missed? 

“If I had to choose only three, I 

would suggest: The pre-historic 

ancient remains in the Lofta area. 

Gamleby, which is the area’s 

original centre with traces from all 

of the times when people lived 

here. Stegsholm; because when the 

new town started to emerge in the 

1400s, it took place at the site of an 

already significant stronghold. The 

modern town came about as a 

result of the final destruction of the 

fortress in 1677, when the medieval 

urban fabric was destroyed at the 

same time.” 

WHAT’S HAPPENING

How would you describe the 

spirit prevailing in Västervik 

today? 

“In Västervik there are many 

creative forces and a strong 

entrepreneurial spirit, so even 

though the world’s economy is 

having problems, the spirit within 

Västervik is still positive. I think that 

this is mainly because the 

municipality believes in the future 

and is prepared to invest.” 

Your friends from Stockholm are 

planning a weekend in Västervik. 

Where would you take them? 

“In the evening, I would take 

them out in a boat and place some 

nets in Västerbåden. Early the 

following morning, they could 

accompany me to pick up the day’s 

catch. We would then have lunch 

on our kayak trip to Hasselö. We 

start out from Gränsö and paddle in 

a northerly direction. On the way we 

would take a break on Äskeskär to 

barbecue our packed lunch. In all 

probability we would see the 

white-tailed eagle and perhaps we 

would be fortunate and spot some 

seals. When we arrive at Hasselö 

Sand we would all rent a bicycle, 

and cycle a few kilometres to the 

restaurant called Sjökanten.

future of Västervik, what do 

you see? 

“Västervik has assumed an 

important position in a powerful 

and dynamic region and is a pioneer 

in business and networking. Our 

population figures are steadily rising. 

Everybody wants to come to 

Västervik to live, work and enjoy 

their holidays!”

“That Västervik should host the 

UN’s major climate meeting and all 

the world’s eyes would be turned 

towards us. During the meeting, the 

participants will sign what for 

always would be referred to as the 

revolutionary “Västervik Treaty“.

will be staying for the weekend. 

Where would you take them? 

“I would take them out into the 

archipelago, to Hasselö. We would 

relax for a while on the beach, take 

a trip on a horse-drawn carriage 

and have a bite to eat at the 

restaurant Sjökanten.

Sweden’s most 

beautiful archipelago 

The Swedish archipelago is unique. No where else in the world is 

there such a rich variation, from Bohuslän’s fjord landscape via 

the barren cliffs on the West Coast to the diversity of the East 

Coast and the serenity of the High Coast. Each area has its own 

fascination, but we and many of us would like to stress that 

Västervik’s archipelago is the most beautiful in Sweden. With 

5,000 islands along seventy kilometres of winding coastline there 

is literally an island for all occasions, moods and tastes.

Ever since the first 

bridge supports were 

firmly secured in the 

water making it possible for 

the guest harbours in 

Västervik and Loftahammar 

to open for the first time, 

Västervik archipelago, 

sometimes referred to as Tjust 

archipelago, has been ranked as 

one of the East Coast of Sweden’s 

absolute favourites among boating people from all 

over Northern Europe. Some people claim that 

accessibility is the most important asset, others 

the intimate small town feel, and many others, the 

vibrant archipelago. And even if we say so 

ourselves, for most people it is the entire package, 

the mixture of all of these things that is so enticing 

for our seaborne visitors. 

The Sverker family from Malmslätt in Östergötland 

took a liking to the Västervik archipelago, 

literally. 

“I grew up in Åtvidaberg 

and have sailed in 

the archipelago outside 

Loftahammar since I was 

five years old. “We now 

have a place to moor our 

boat in Loftahammar 

and we go there now and again throughout the 

summer,” says Anna Sverker, who has two 

children Amanda, 16 years, and Martin 12 years, 

with her husband Per.

Swedish fighter plane), but when she is at sea she

What’s so special about Tjust 

archipelago? 

“It is an incredibly pleasant 

and varied archipelago. If you 

compare with how it was when I 

was a kid, the archipelago is also 

much more exciting today, with 

restaurants, cafes and all sorts of activities. 

There are alternatives to sitting at a deserted islet, 

and I think this is a very positive development.” 

Do you have any personal favourites? 

“I chair the Åtvidaberg Boat Club, and we have 

a recreation area in Björköleden between 

Loftahammar and Gudingen which we visit 

sometimes. But otherwise I think Idö and Vinö 

kalf in Gudingen is fantastically beautiful.” 

How do you enjoy the 

archipelago? 

“It varies. We use the 

boat as a summer 

residence, so sometimes 

we go out on our own 

just to enjoy the silence. 

At other times we may 

enjoy a weekend with friends and family in one of 

the natural harbours. From time to time we travel 

north to Gryts and St Anna’s archipelago, and 

sometimes, we venture out just for the fun of 

sailing.”

archipelago was only available for those 

who had their own boat, kayak, or air 

mattress for that matter! But following investment 

from operators 

within the tourist 

industry, archipelago 

traffic has been expanded 

so that it is now possible 

for anyone to get around 

and about on a ferry or 

the taxi boats in search of 

that perfect skerry, rock 

or island restaurant and 

spend unforgettable days, evenings and nights in 

Västervik’s magnificent archipelago. 

Throughout the summer months you can travel 

on scheduled ferry boats from Västervik to Idö 

and Hasselö stopping at Gränsö slott, Lysingsbadet

a few days, weeks, or the entire summer; well, 

that’s no problem. Or

ensure as a first step, that 

there were ferry boats 

available from the spring to the autumn. A perfect 

alternative for those seeking peace and quiet, and

TILL 

1. FLATVARP ON ST. 

ASKÖ 

Bridge to Stora Askö means that 

you can reach Flatvarp by both 

car and bicycle. Pack your picnic 

basket and visit the rocks from 

which you can bathe. Enjoy the 

panoramic view across the sea 

and the islands. 

2. VÄDERSKÄR 

Far out along the seaboard is 

Väderskär, surrounded by both 

open sea and the archipelago. 

The island is best known for its 

chapel from the 1600s. Väderskär 

chapel is used in summer for 

church services and weddings. 

Väderskär Day is held in July. 

3. STORA GRINDÖ 

St. Grindö is a fishing village in 

Västervik’s northern outer isles. 

Fishing and salmon farming 

are carried on here. The fish is 

processed in the island’s own 

smokehouse. In Laxboa you 

can buy fresh fish directly over 

the fish counter. A wide range 

of delicacies from the sea are 

served here (be sure to make a 

reservation!). 

4. STEDSHOLMEN 

The island’s long-standing tradition 

as a pilot station lasted well 

into the 1960s. A picturesque 

setting with old buildings. There 

is a guest jetty for visiting boats. 

Guided tours can be booked. 

5. GÄRDSHOLMEN 

Gärdsholmen is located in Syrsan 

bay, northwest of Loftahammar. 

There are cabins for rent 

and there is a fishing camp. 

Traditional island fishing is also 

carried out here and there is a 

smokehouse.

6. LOFTAHAMMAR 

The community is an 

archipelago idyll that becomes 

truly vibrant during the summer 

when many tourists and 

summer residents return to 

Loftahammar. During the summer 

period, regular archipelago 

traffic departs from Loftahammar 

where you change boat 

on the island of Hasselö and 

from there you can continue to 

Västervik. 

7. BJÖRKÖ 

It has been called Sweden’s 

most beautiful island, this 

verdant jewel in the inner 

archipelago. The island is a 

nature reserve. It offers its visitors, 

cottages for rent, guided 

tours with a picnic basket, a 

sauna, waterfowl hunting and 

boat rentals for fishing. There 

are excellent opportunities for 

swimming and recreation. 

8. SMÅGÖ 

On Smågö in the intermediate 

regions of the archipelago, 

you can rent accommodation 

with stunning views. We offer 

hunting and fishing tourism, 

corporate events and conferences. 

9. RÅGÖ 

Between Hallmarelandet in the 

north and Hasselö in the south 

is the island of Rågö, which is a 

nature reserve. The island offers 

many opportunities for bathing 

and Rågöbyn’s cafeteria offers 

food to its hungry customers. 

At the island’s youth hostel you 

can stay overnight if you want 

to enjoy the archipelago for 

a longer period. There is also 

a guest jetty. On Saturday in 

week 29, the popular Rågö Day 

will be arranged. 

10. HASSELÖ AND 

SLADÖ 

The whole family will enjoy the 

island of Hasselö, which has a 

guest harbour, youth hostel, cottages 

for rent, country shop, cafe 

and the restaurant Sjökanten. The 

island attracts swimming, cycling 

and kayaking adventures, fishing, 

boat rentals and hiking. Enjoy a 

journey by tractor and trailer and 

take pleasure in the varied landscape. 

The experiences are many 

and all-year-round. The nature 

reserve at Sladö can be reached 

by land from Hasselö. Here you 

can, when available, purchase 

fresh and smoked fish. 

11. TORRÖN 

On the idyllic Torrön, fishing 

tourism is offered, with pike and 

perch. You stay in small cabins by 

the sea and you can also rent a 

sauna and hot tub. 

12. SPÅRÖ 

The stately Spårö Båk (lighthouse) 

sits high up on the island 

of Spårö. The lighthouse has 

become a landmark for the entire 

archipelago of Västervik. There 

are protected bays where you can 

moor your own boat. 

13. IDÖ 

On Idö, in the outer archipelago 

just outside Västervik, is Idö 

Skärgårdskrog (Inn) with the 

archipelago’s best views of 

the seaward skerries, equally 

fascinating in all weathers and 

seasons. Idö skärgårdsliv arranges 

an eagle and seal safari. 

Accommodation is offered in 

cabins next to the sea or in your 

own boat in the harbour. There is 

a small cafe with tourist services 

and a bathing area. 

14. HÄNDELÖP 

Händelöp is an island with a 

bridge to the mainland. Visit the 

old picturesque fishing village 

(Händelöp village). Archipelago 

Day is celebrated Saturday week 

28 and is a well-attended event. 

A favourite spot for many Västervikians 

are the rocks at the fishing 

port beyond the village. 

15. BLANKAHOLM 

A small community right on 

the sea. The community offers 

accommodation and services 

of several different types. From 

Blankaholm, trips depart out into 

the archipelago by boat on the 

M/S Blanka. 

16. ÖSTRA SKÄLÖ 

Eastern Skälö is beautifully 

situated in a sheltered bay. The 

summer restaurant entices 

people with its delicious food 

and a miniature golf course. You 

can rent one of the cottages via 

Västervik Tourist Office. 

17. ÖSTRA AND 

VÄSTRA EKNÖ 

Cabins for rent – breakfast and 

bicycle. The Eknö islands have 

long since grown together and 

today make up the archipelago’s 

largest island. There are many 

delightful places to visit and 

much to experience. 

18. ÖRÖ 

Örö is a favourite area for people 

interested in paddling kayaks. 

The Wiström couple welcome you 

throughout the year. Here you 

can try one of the appreciated 

archipelago dishes on the menu 

and enjoy the sauna. Do you want

on the coast 

Västervik is neither Sweden’s answer to Saint Tropéz, Ibiza or 

Venice. Västervik is... Västervik: A medium-sized town where 

you can stroll along the water’s edge undisturbed and watch 

the boats, relax at one of the cafes and enjoy a delicious bite 

to eat while you enjoy the sun setting beyond the horizon. Or 

do all that other stuff. Västervik, namely, however clichéd it 

may sound, has something for all tastes, and weather 

conditions. Västervik offers shopping and restaurants a la big 

city, combined with the quiet and proximity of the smaller 

town. It also has beaches, activities, historical sights for the 

inquiring mind and oases in the form of quaint cafes and 

parks for those who prefer to take it a little easier.

FANTASTIC SHOPPING 

Although Västervik is a small town it has 

absolutely high class shopping. If you are 

looking for trendy clothes from established 

chains, then you will find H&M, Vero Moda, 

Lindex, Åhléns, JC, Brothers & Sisters, Lager 

157 and Dressman on the high street. If you 

prefer a more individual style there are unique 

shops such as Carl-Otto, Ogräs, Blinca and 

Avenue 68. If decorating and home 

furnishings is what you are into, then you 

should visit Bohaget, Formbar, Moore and Hos 

Magnus & Eva. 

Sweden’s best Ogräs 

For three years in a row, Ogräs was 

nominated among the top three for the 

title the Fashion Shop of the Year in 

Sweden, and Ogräs finally won first prize for

We had a little chat with Gustaf 

Molin in order to get some 

clothing tips for the summer. 

How long does it take from when 

a customer walks into your shop 

to you being able to give the 

person specific style tips? 

“In principle, the moment they 

step inside the door. You take a 

quick look at the person and what 

she or he is wearing. That is usually 

sufficient to get a feel for what 

would suit them.” 


Do you often meet hopeless cases when 

it comes to taste in clothes? 

“No, that never happens. You dress in 

a way that you consider is sensible, it is 

important, but many people want 

advice and tips. There is no right and 

wrong, and I would never try to change 

a person’s personal style. 

Name three items of clothing that every 

man’s summer wardrobe should 

contain? 

“A pair of chino-like shorts that end 

just above the knee, a somewhat rough 

Oxford dress shirt casually worn with 

rolled-up sleeves. And on the feet, a pair 

of Converse shoes in canvas or a pair of 

leather shoes.” 

Which items of clothing should you, 

under no circumstances, combine with 

each other? 

“I can not recall that I have seen a pair 

of Crocs nicely matched with any other 

item of clothing ever.

Gränsö Slotts Ljusstöperi 

Gränsö Slotts Ljusstöperi – In the old 

oil storehouse at the foot of Kulbacken is 

one of the nation’s leading candle 

manufacturers. 

Båtsmansstugorna – In the middle of 

Västervik centre you can walk among the 

small boatswain’s dwellings from the 18th 

century, grab a coffee/bite to eat or stay 

overnight. 

Stadsparken – The town’s largest park 

has a play area, fishpond, miniature golf, 

fountains, floral splendour and beautiful, 

green areas. 

Aspagården – The small red wooden 

houses adjacent to St. Gertruds Church 

are Västervik’s oldest buildings. Today they 

house a pottery workshop. 

Västerviks museum – This beautiful 

building can be found on Kulbacken, 

where it has interesting exhibits on 

display, some are from the museum’s own 

collections. 

Lysingsbadet – Sweden’s first five-star 

resort is now becoming the country’s top 

resort. There are a number activities as 

well as bathing areas, even for those who 

are not actually staying at the resort. 



“When your feet are tired 

after a long day in town, I can 

really recommend a tour of 

the Wimmerströmska estate, 

a national heritage site, 

where you will be transported 

to a completely different 

world! If you are hungry, the 

cafe’s pasta salad with 

salmon is a real treat.”

The dutch/swedish national troubadour 

Cornelis Vreeswijk’s visit to the annual 

Visfestivalen (Song Festival) in the 1970s and 

1980s forms a part of Sweden’s colourful music history. 

The epic live performances, the decadent parties, and the 

fabulous island excursions. Cornelius often chose to 

spend the entire festival week in Västervik. Master Cees 

is no longer with us, but Västervik still manages to 

attract an increasing amount of top Swedish artists each 

year. Last year September, The Ark and Hammerfall 

chose to make an appearance here during their summer 

tours. Lars Winnerbäck, Certainly!, Ane Brun and 

Melissa Horn, to mention but a few, are artists who have 

provided their fans with memorable performances here 

in recent years. Besides the enthralling concerts, 

Västervik has so much more to offer in terms of events.

The Swedish word ledighet can be 

translated as leisure time, time off work, or 

on holiday. For the adventure guide Fredrik 

Österberg, the word has an entirely different 

meaning. As a specialist in activities of the sweatier 

kind, and in possession of an amazing knowledge of 

the countryside around Västervik municipality, we 

asked him if he could tell us what there was to do 

and explore in the area. 

“I have travelled to countries such as Ecuador and 

Kenya and I must say that Västervik fares well in the 

competition. We have world-class climbing, the 

archipelago is quite unique in the world with its 

5,000 islands and enough fish to host the World 

Championships in pike fishing.” We have hiking and 

bicycle trails which meander through stunning 

countryside, as beautiful as the scenes from Astrid 

Lindgren’s movies about Emil in Lönneberga and 

Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. All this within the 

borders of the municipality. It is quite unique“. 

What type of trends do you see developing in the 

rapidly growing outdoor tourism industry? 

“People tend to tire of simply lying on the beach

and watching other people throughout their entire 

holiday. Instead we want activities, things to do. 

People are interested in travelling to the Red Sea and 

diving, kite surfing in the Gran Canaries, bicycling 

in the Alps or they would like to test what it is like 

to go climbing in France“. 

What is it really all about? 

“What I understand of the situation is that nature 

is man’s correct element. The body recovers 

incredibly quickly both physically and spiritually 

when you come out into the nature. In a stressful 

environment with smart phones, the television and 

all the stuff they write in the newspapers and 

magazines, a need develops to find some peace and 

quiet and get closer to our origins“. 

Not only that, it does not necessarily have to be so 

sensitive to the weather. 

“No, if it drizzles it can give the experience a whole 

new dimension.” 

Why should we hire a guide, rather than buying 

a map and venturing off on our own? 

“Of course it is up to each and every individual to 


decide what they want to do, but I personally 

always obtain the services of a guide when I come 

to an area I don’t know, simply because I know I 

will get the most out of my stay. If, for example, 

you intend to paddle a kayak in Västervik 

archipelago, the probability of finding true beauty 

spots is much greater if we do it with someone who 

has been paddling there for 20 years rather than if 

you had set off on your own. And also, the rental 

equipment is usually already taken care of, if you 

hire a guide“.

What would you do with... 

A 70-year-old couple who like to test their 

limits: 

Walk around Tjustleden, in the vicinity of Lake 

Hjorten, and finish off by making wild boar 

paella over an open fire. 

A family with two adults and three children 

aged between three and 10 years: 

Climbing with ropes down Valstadberget with 

the adults, and down a couple of small hills with 

the children. Then they would be given the 

opportunity of seeing what it was like to climb 

up, before we finish off the day with a barbeque 

and a pentathlon on the subject animals. 

A group of girls in search of the ultimate 

adrenaline kick: 

I would start with Lysingsbadet’s adventure 

track, beginning with a free fall from twelve 

metres in height, followed by a track that 

stretches between eight pine trees, and finishing 

off with a ropeway up to our awaiting kayaks.

Fine weather 

Few sayings are so provocative than “there 

is no bad weather, just bad clothing”. Say it 

to a motorcycle enthusiast in a tent when 

the monsun rains are pouring down, or to a 

person allergic to heat when he is roasting in 

the sun and the air conditioning is on strike. 

Tobias Lilja Lundberg is a trained meteorologist, 

a weatherman on TV4 and was raised 

in Västervik. He knows everything that is 

worth knowing about the local climate. 

I 

n terms of average daily temperatures and 

hours of sunshine, Västervik nearly always 

comes out on top when the Swedish summer 

is summarized, and this is a well-known fact – at 

least for all the people who live in the town. But 

why is this so? Tobias Lilja Lundberg explains. 

“The Swedish climate is characterized by a 

prevailing westerly wind which, in principle, blows 

all year round. This means that the areas of 

precipitation that come in over the country are 

forced to rise and release their rain on the West 

Coast. What is more, the air masses are then 

forced to rise again in the southern Swedish 

Highlands, and even more rain is released, so the 

air masses are relatively dry when they arrive at the 

East Coast.” 

So all the talk about Västervik being in a solar 

window is correct? 

“The solar window is not a recognised concept, 

but it would certainly be plausible to say that 

Västervik and certain parts of the coast of 

Småland, Öland and Gotland are in a sort of solar 

window because of the surrounding geography.” 

Because clouds are usually formed first in the 

beginning of the day, it often produces clear 

nights and mornings with clear weather? 

“Yes, exactly. During the summer, the sky is often 

blue in the morning, but towards lunch, clouds 

form in the sky. This is because the air over the

land is warmed up, rises and moves out towards 

the sea where it cools and moves against the land 

again. Where it is warmed up again, takes up water 

vapour, forms clouds and drifts out to sea again.” 

Last but not least, we have put people on the 

moon and communicate via the internet, so when 

will Västervik’s tourist manager be able to go out 

and promise sustained sun and 25 degrees from 

June to August? 

“That may be difficult. The weather is so chaotic 

and there are so many factors that can influence 

the weather that it is virtually impossible to control 

the weather in such a very specific geographical 

region such as Västervik. But there is ongoing 

research on how to induce rain by using silver ions 

and reduced solar incident radiation using sulphur, 

but it is very controversial as it is difficult to say 

what effect it will have on the climate and 

environment in the long term.”

Take a

Perhaps the diversity of Västervik municipality can simply be 

explained by the geography and random shape it acquired 

from the municipal reform that came into force in 1971. The 

municipality is Götaland’s largest surface area, second to 

Gotland, and was composed earlier of no less than 13 smaller 

areas, so-called rural districts. These factors, and the large 

distances within the municipality, have meant that each area 

has had the opportunity to develop in its own way. From the 

archipelago’s small fishing villages and coastal communities 

to the mill towns, agricultural villages, large forests and 

expansive valleys with smooth mirror-like lakes. Visit the 

Tourist Office, pick up a map and set out to explore all that 

Västervik municipality has to offer.

The Green Wave 2.0 

W 

hen lena göransson decided it 

was time to round off her career as an 

internationally recognized fashion 

model, she could have chosen to settle in Paris, New 

York, a picturesque village on the French Riviera, or 

a tropical island for that matter. She had contacts all 

over the world. But eventually she decided on the 

small village of Tovehult, a rural idyll, surrounded 

by forested mountains, undulating fields and a lake, 

only a few miles outside Västervik. 

“When Peter and I felt it was time to start a 

family, there was no alternative but to move home 

to Sweden. After some time on the West Coast my 

dad asked me if we were interested in taking over 

the old tannery in Tofvehult, where I spent almost 

every summer when I was growing up. We said yes 

without thinking, haha. But that’s the way we are. 

Our motto has always been – and it may well be 

written on our gravestones – that things will 

always work out alright in the end. The rest is, as it 

is called, history.” 

Lena, Peter and their children William, Evelina 

and Simone packed their bags and moved to 

Tovehult where they opened the Tofvehult Café 

and Conference Centre, and embraced a whole 

new lifestyle. That was 13 years ago. 

“I used to come here every summer when I was a 

kid, so for me it is very much associated with a deep 

sense of security. It may sound silly, but when I 

travel I always feel that there is a small place in my 

heart that is empty. And the vacuum is filled when 

I come here.” 

What is it about Tovehult that makes you feel 

this way? 

“To be able to walk out the door and see the lake 

and hear the seagulls and witness the lovely colours 

of the changing seasons. There are other places I 

can visit to download energy and gather inspiration, 

but then I want to return to Tovehult where I 

can be myself, sloping around in my slippers and 

where I don’t need to look at myself in the mirror 

every day,“ she laughs. 

Do you and Peter try to encourage others to adopt 

your way of living? 

“We do not need to, because we are living 

trademarks for our lifestyle. We live in the 

countryside, where we work in our own house and 

pick the pears from the trellisworks, which we then 

use in the cakes we serve our guests. We have dogs, 

cats, hens, grow our own herbs and vegetables, and 

have been told that many people use us as role 

models when they pluck up the courage to start up 

a business in a rural community.” 

It’s time 

to “fika” 

Fika (which means having a coffee/tea 

break) is a social institution in Sweden. It 

involves taking a break from a task to drink a 

cup of coffee or tea or another beverage with a bite to 

eat in the company of friends, family or colleagues. 

The fika break is central to Swedish culture. You can 

“fika” at a coffee shop or cafe, at work, outdoors or at 

home. This is roughly how the phenomenon “fika” is 

described in the digital encyclopedia Wikipedia. In 

Västervik municipality the fika break is taken very 

seriously, especially during the holiday season. There 

are lots of great places. Here are some. 

Båtsmansgränds kaffestuga 

In one of Västervik’s most historically interesting 

neighborhoods, the boatswain’s cottages can be found. 

The small wooden cottages were built as homes for the 

boatswains 250 years ago, and they can be rented today 

for overnight stays. You will be fascinated by the small 

cottages and most certainly enjoy the herb garden. 

Then why not round it all off with a cup of coffee/tea 

under the trees at Ackrell’s Cafe where the staff often 

dress in both frills and hats! Don’t miss the freshlybaked 

waffles. 

Kafékultur Västervik 

In Västervik town, there are several genuine cafes 

offering home cooking and a homely atmosphere. This 

is an ideal place to relax for a tasty break. There are 

several cafes to be found along the main thoroughfare 

in town, on Storgatan. Only a stone’s throw away from 

Skärgårdsterminalen is Frunchlådan which has a 

quaint little courtyard. The same is true for Wimmerströmska 

cafe a little further up along the street. Café 

Kannan is on the main square and offers an excellent 

place to watch all the people go by, and a little bit 

further along, Tant Grön, where the courtyard offers 

peace and tranquillity. Continue a few hundred metres 

up along the main street and you will come to one of 

the town’s longest runners, Nilsson’s pâtisserie. 


Tofvehult Kafé & Konferens 

A little more than twenty kilometres south of Västervik 

is Tovehult. The old tannery, located between two lakes, 

with a wonderful orchard offers a Swedish summer 

feeling at its best. Inside the cafe, you can smell the 

aroma the of newly roasted coffee beans and freshly 

baked pastries, all baked on the cafe’s premises by the 

owners Lena and Peter Göransson (who live in the 

house). There is a mixture biscuits, pies, buns and the 

classic Tofvehultaren – a type of croissant with a filling. 

Stures Bageri 

Stures bageri 

Sture’s bageri (bakery) in Loftahammar is an 

institution in the beautiful coastal community. Since 

1959 the bakery has been run by the Andersson 

family, who in recent years have made some 

investments to improve their bakery in terms of its 

comfort factor, in the form of a magnificent glass 

veranda. At Sture’s bakery they bake cakes, buns, 

bread and savoury sandwich layer-cakes based on old 

recipes from local produce. 

Stagårds Café 

Stagårds café & hembageri 

In the latter part of the summer 2010 Annika and 

Anders Stagård took over Hembagariet (the home 

bakery) which is located between Garpe centrum och 

Gamla torget in the centre of Gamleby. The main 

attraction at Stagårds café & hembageri throughout 

the summer however, is their specially made-on-thepremises 

Italian gelato ice cream, with only six per cent 

fat and seasoned with purees made of fruit and berries.

unnar boman will never forget the 

first time he went to the holiday resort 

Lysingsbadet. It was on 13 March 1985 and 

Gunnar had just accepted the offer of taking charge of 

tourism in Västervik. 

“A lot of work had just been started, but the financial 

situation was precarious so we could not afford to 

complete the work. The area felt very old and I 

remember the small beds with grey blankets and the 

horsehair mattresses in the cabins. At the same time 

the environment was fantastic, so I saw immediately 

that there was enormous potential.” 

The first measure Gunnar took was to establish a 

vision that Lysingsbadet would be the first 5-star 

holiday resort in Sweden, and that it would start 

generating money instead of costing money for the 

municipality. 

Five years later, in 1990, we took the important 

decision to remove all charges for the showers, 

laundry rooms and baths. 

“That summer we increased our occupancy rate by 30 

per cent! And the following year we received our 

long-awaited fifth star.” 

Today Gunnar Boman is no longer in charge of 

tourism at Västervik municipality, instead he is the 

Managing Director of 

Lysingsbadet Västervik 

Resort AB and is 

focused on 

constantly 

improving the resort. 

Every summer, 

Gunnar and his 

colleagues receive 

upwards of 200,000 

holidaymakers including 

Swedes, Danes, Dutch and 

Germans. A challenge that requires 

both a visionary feel and personal commitment. 

“We are on track to achieving our goal of becoming 

Sweden’s first real holiday resort. The biggest 

challenge is that an even larger percentage of our 

guests will have a good holiday and feel that they have 

received value for money. This is extremely important. 

Today the figure is 93 per cent, and it is a very high 

figure, but the goal is 97 per cent. It is probably not 

possible to go any higher. 

FACTS: VÄSTERVIK RESORT AB 

Lysingsbadet is a 5-star holiday resort and is with its 

626 pre-bookable camping pitches and 300 drop-inpitches, 

it is one of Scandinavia’s largest resorts. There 

is something for all ages, from the treasure hunt, the 

guitar hero-school to the adventure track, golf, and 

dance band nights. 

The Fyhr family come here every year 

In 2005, the Fyhr family from Aneby visited 

Lysingsbadet for the first time. The objective was 

to get to know the location and to take a look 

around for a possible permanent place within the 

resort. The following year they made their decision. 

Since 2006, Mikael, Angelica, Hampus (10 years old), 

Felicia (7), and Amanda (2), own a 20 square metre 

large caravan set up in the Bay at Lysingsbadet 

Västervik Resort. 

“We knew straight away that Lysingsbadet was the 

right place for us. We had small children and wanted 

to have somewhere to go on the weekends throughout 

the summer and on holidays. Since then, we have 

spent every summer there.” 

Can you put your finger on what it is that is so good? 

“Everything!” There is always something to do, and 

it is particularly important for children, who are not 

content to just sit outside the caravan and relax. 

There is a shallow sandy beach here where you can 

keep a good eye on the children, and if you want to,

or if the weather is bad, you can always go to the pool 

or participate in any indoor activity. The weather is 

not really that important, even if everything naturally 

feels a little easier when the sun is shining. 

How has Lysingsbadet changed over the years? 

“We noticed a big difference when Västervik 

Resort Lysingsbadet AB was formed in 2008, with 

Gunnar (Boman) at the wheel. The range of activities 

was extended and the entire resort was a lot better 

organized.” 

With your hand on your heart; how much have 

you seen of Västervik outside Lysingsbadet during 

these years? 

“Haha, each year, we plan to make a few trips, with 

the archipelago ferryboat to Idö and Hasselö for 

example, but there is always something that gets in 

the way. But this summer we’ll take a look around, I 

promise, almost.”

Martin’s summer menu 

If food is pleasure, the chefs are food alchemists. For it is both 

an art and a science to transform a fresh salmon or stringy 

asparagus into a culinary delicacy. For the Krüger family in 

Loftahammar most things revolve around food. Gunilla the mother 

and Anders the father, the siblings Mary and Martin and Martin’s 

wife Kristine run the popular restaurant Sjökrogen in Loftahammar’s 

marina, and since the end of 2011 they also run the à la carte 

restaurant Torget 1 as well, on Gamla torget in Gamleby. During 

the summer months, they more or less work from sunrise to sunset 

but Martin does not cut any corners when it comes to food. We 

asked him to tell us about what they ate during the summer. 

Breakfast: “Fresh strawberries with yoghurt and All-Bran, a glass of 

freshly squeezed orange juice, two cups of coffee and a slice of bread.” 

Lunch: “In the summer I like to eat smoked salmon from the smoke 

house in Kårö with a potato salad and a glass of mineral water.” 

Dinner: “Grilled sirloin steak with Chimichurri, roasted new potatoes, 

grilled vegetables and a nice glass of wine. For dessert, crème brulé with 

fresh summer berries.”

The Swede rarely 

misses a chance to enjoy 

a celebration. During 

the summer months, three of 

the year’s major food festivals 

take place. 

MIDSUMMER EVE 

The origin of this celebration is 

that this day is the longest day 

of the year, the solstice, which 

always falls on a Friday between 

19-25 June. The celebrations 

begin by decorating a midsummer-pole 

with flowers and 

leaves, the pole is then raised and 

people dance in circles around it. 

At lunch time, the tables are laid 

with herring, sour cream, chives 

and new potatoes and then the 

festivities may begin. The Swedes 

like to drink traditional beer and 

schnapps. According to folklore, 

you are supposed to pick seven 

different flowers and climb over 

nine fences so that during the 

night, you will dream about the 

person you are going to marry. 

CRAYFISH PARTY 

Previously in Sweden the law 

dictated the times of the year 

you could fish for crayfish, which 

explains why crayfish celebrations 

were held on the first Wednesday 

in August. The law was abolished 

in 1994, but many people still 

follow the tradition. At a crayfish 

party people often wear colorful 

hats. The main course consists of 

whole crayfish (cooked in salted 

water, beer and dill) which are 

opened and eaten with cheese, 

baguettes, pie and various sauces. 

You usually drink schnapps and 

beer with your food. 


LUCIA 

Each year, since 1764, early in the 

morning on 13 December, the 

memory of the Italian Saint Lucia 

is celebrated in churches, schools 

and workplaces throughout 

Sweden. The central aspect of this 

ceremonious occasion consists of 

a Lucia procession with boy attendants, 

maids and a Lucia, who 

together sing songs a capella with 

a religious character. In connection 

with the celebration, saffran-flavoured 

bread and ginger snaps are 

eaten together with mulled wine.

The Green Island 

If Gränsö had been just outside Phuket, the 

Maldives or the Galapagos, tourism would 

certainly have been both strong and steady. 

Fortunately the 328 hectare-large nature 

reserve is only a few kilometres outside 

of Västervik, linked to the mainland by a 

bridge; it is something of a hidden treasure 

among the local destinations. 

Skanvik 

Gränsö is an open-air recreation area 

and a residential area all in one. In the 

North, where Gränsö channel divides 

the mainland from the island, there is a mixture 

of summer houses and permanent housing. If 

you take the winding car and bicycle route south 

along the island’s horse paddocks and oak trees 

you will soon arrive at Gränsö Slott with its 

hotel, spa, cafe, and a little bathing area popular 

among families with children. This is where 

Bike Rock is arranged along with other cultural 

events. Across the road is Bondbacken with a 

barbecue area and a shallow bathing area. 

Continue past the castle and the vegetation 

becomes more dense and the terrain more undulating. 

If you drive towards Lillön, after an 

invigorating forest walk of just a few hundred 

metres, fantastic softly polished granite rocks 

and beautiful rocky bathing areas await you 

along with an uninterrupted view of the 

horizon. If you continue south instead, after a 

few kilometres you come to a side road, take to 

the right, there is a signpost to Skanvik. Turn 

off there if you prefer cliffs and sliding down 

into the sea. If you continue to the end of the 

road you end up at Sandviken, where there is a 

shallow beach, ideal for the little ones. 

If bathing is not your thing, there is a 12 

kilometre long hiking trail that runs around the 

island, and several wind shelters with barbecue 

facilities, that’s if you want to wake up with an 

open view of the archipelago and the sea, 

without it costing you a penny.

Living in beautiful Västervik 

In Västervik, you are always close to the sea and many 

of the apartments and houses are right next to the 

water, or they have a view of the sea. You can choose 

between living in a central location within walking 

distance to the shops and restaurants, in childrenfriendly 

areas that are close to the forest and the 

countryside or in rural areas in one of the municipality’s 

smaller villages. An apartment or a house, the 

prices are still comparatively low in Västervik’s 

municipality. The municipal housing company are 

planning to build new apartments close to the sea and 

in the centre of town. The municipal housing company 

gives priority to those moving to Västervik because 

they have been given a job within the municipality. 

Educations at all levels 

On Campus Västervik, you can choose between a 

large number of courses and a score of educational 

programmes at university level. In addition, there is 

an extensive activities programme with lectures and 

seminars along with a number of company-adapted 

assignment programmes. Today there are approximately 

500 students who are continuing their 

education at Campus Västervik. 

Västervik is an expansive business community 

Västervik has expanded over the past few years and 

we are busy working to become one of the country’s
