Work on the formal-style garden started last week and is expected to be finished this week. The sculpture on the corner of Anzac Dr and Travis Rd was restored and moved to higher ground in 2015 in time for the centenary commemorations of the Anzac landing at Gallipoli. At that time, shingle from the beaches of Gallipoli and Çanakkale was gifted by the people of Turkey for use in the garden around the memorial. Project manager for the Avon-Ōtākaro Mahinga Kai NEW GARDEN: The Poppies over Gallipoli sculpture will have a new formal garden featuring stones gifted by the people of Turkey. Exemplar, Kathryn Bates, said the group had been working to get the garden built for the past two years. “We are lucky to have local company Ōtautahi Bespoke Builders under take the construction of the garden, making it more affordable by providing pro-bono labour,” she said. “They will be assisted by local community voluntary labour organised by the Avon-Ōtākaro Network.” Local brick will feature in the poppy-shaped design, along with native shrubs and boulders representing the Southern Alps and the Port Hills. The Coastal-Burwood Community Board granted $3000 towards the cost of materials for the garden. Avon-Ōtākaro Network hopes to have a formal opening with a barbecue and planting day in the Hulverstone Reserve on Anzac Day. Children with sensory disorders get chance to go to the movies • By Sarla Donovan MOST PEOPLE love going to the movies, right? Most of us have sat in the dark with our popcorn, laughing or crying at the flickering screen. But not everyone. Many children with sensory disorders, such as autism, find sitting in a darkened room with a bunch of strangers and loud noises a complete nightmare. For them, a family night out at the movies isn’t an option. To help give these children a positive experience of being at a cinema, The Champion Centre has partnered with The Palms Shopping Centre to hold a special movie screening of The Lego Batman Movie for children with sensory disorders. After a successful inaugural event last year, The Champion Centre director Susan Foster- Cohen said it was a chance for families to take their children to the movies in a non-judgemental situation. Laszlo attended last year’s sensory movie screening. “Not only [does] this event give families an opportunity to experience regular life, it’s a chance to raise awareness about autism and sensory disorders.” Children’s entertainer Melanie Poppins will be at the cinema for a pre-screening party. •Tickets for the movie at 10.30am on Sunday, <strong>April</strong> 9, are available from Reading Cinemas South Brighton surf club requests consent to build new headquarters • By Sarla Donovan THE SOUTH Brighton Surf Life Saving Club is a step closer to having a new clubhouse. The club will meet with the city council’s urban design panel this week to look at the designs for the new building and plans are expected to go to the city council for resource consent by the end of the month. After the 2011 earthquakes, the current building suffered significant damage and the club decided to demolish and rebuild. It has occupied its present site on the corner of Marine Pd and Bridge St since 1929. Over the past 18 months, architect’s Sheppard and Rout have been developing a new design in consultation with a working group of club members, which includes engineer and Christchurch Arts Centre boss Andre Lovatt, who is a life member. The club has $500,000 in the bank and Mr Cox said he was confident it could raise the remaining $1.5 million before construction starts. He said the building would be more functional and allow for a variety of users. “This will be a community asset, able to be used by residents’ associations, schools and a range of community groups.” The new building will seat 280 people. •An art auction will be held at the clubhouse on Saturday night to raise funds for the new building.
