Safety improvements
planned for QE II Drive
UNSAFE: NZTA will put in barriers along this section of QE II Drive as part of a $600 million nationwide
road safety programme.
AFTER ONE death and
13 serious injuries, safety
improvements are to be
installed on QE II Drive
from Innes Rd to Burwood
Rd.
The section of State Highway
74 is classified as a high
risk rural road. One person
has died and 13 have been
seriously injured along there
in the past 10 years.
To improve safety, the New
Zealand Transport Agency is
proposing to install median
barriers to keep traffic apart
and reduce the risk of headon
crashes.
It is also proposing to
install flexible road safety
barriers on both sides of the
road to stop drivers running
off the road and to protect
pedestrians and cyclists using
the shared pathway.
“We appreciate this road is
only going to get busier with
new residential developments
and schools opening
in the area,” NZTA transport
system manager Pete Connors
said.
The proposed safety
improvements will reduce
the risk of crashes, make
the stretch of road safer for
people who travel on it and
provide a more forgiving
environment for motorists
who make mistakes when
they are driving, he said.
Work is expected to begin
in early 2018. A project
information sheet is being
delivered to about 16,000
homes.
“It outlines
what we are
planning to
do and invites
feedback
until the end
of August,’’
Pete
Connors
Mr Connors
said.
The work
on SH74 is part of a nationwide
$600 million safe road
and roadsides programme
which NZTA is delivering on
behalf of the Government.
The goal of the programme
is to make many rural routes
on the highway network
safer over the next six years.
It aims to prevent deaths
and serious injury crashes
through relatively simple
measures such as rumble
strips, road shoulder widening,
safety barriers, better
signage and speed limit
changes.

IF YOU are an up and coming
young league or union player the
world is your oyster.
More and more of the province’s
young oval ball talent is
being picked up by big spending
league clubs and rugby franchises
seeking to stock up their ranks
for the future.
On page 6 today, we reveal
17-year-old Linwood Keas league
centre Graeme Patu-Vaega’au will
move to Auckland at the end of
the year after signing a three-year
contract with the Warriors.
The NRL clubs and Super
Rugby franchises have a wealth of
talent to choose from but it takes
a special kind of player to make it
to the top.
Let’s hope Patu-Vaega’au is one
of a new breed to take the Warriors
forward when he hits the top
grade in two or three years.

Work on hub to begin in November
Selena
Robertson
A COMMUNITY centre will
return to the heart of Woolston
with construction beginning in
November.
Plans for the new Woolston
Community Facility on Ferry Rd
include a nod to the distinctive
brick of the former Woolston
Community
Library which
once occupied
the site.
An artist’s
impression of
the new facility
shows the community’s
desire
for brick and
timber in the
building is at the forefront of the
design process.
City council project manager
Selena Robertson said the new
facility would restore a focal
point for the Woolston community.
“We can’t wait to begin work
on this new facility later this
year and bring a community
hub back to the village,” she
said.
“We have had two rounds
of public consultation seeking
comments about what should be
included in the building, how
community groups want to use
it and a preference of materials
HUB: The new Woolston Community Facility’s brick design gives a nod to the original building.
for the exterior – brick and timber
were the favoured options,”
she said.
“We feel like we have a great
idea of what this community
needs from the facility.”
The project is expected to be
completed by June next year. The
building would include a public
toilet, the volunteer library, a
small meeting room and a hall
for community groups to use.
The former Library was badly
damaged in the 2010 and 2011
earthquakes, but the site was
brought back to life through a
transitional project last year.
Children from local schools
decorated large planter boxes
and created decorative tiles for
the site.
The detailed design of the new
facility is currently under way by
the design team, which is made
up of Ignite Architects and TM
Consultants. Sally Buck, chairwoman
of the Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board,
said the planning stages marked
a major step in the rebuilding
process.
“I am very excited to see this
project finally happening and
can’t wait for Woolston to have
its community centre back.”
The former Woolston Community
Library was one of the
first suburban libraries to open
in Christchurch in 1871.
In Brief
SCHOOL FENCES UP
Fencing has gone up around the
site that will become the new
Shirley Boys’ High School and
Avonside Girls’ High School joint
campus. Ground improvement
work has begun and will be
completed by late November,
which is when work on the
school’s foundations will start.
MUSICIAN SELECTED
Avonside Girls’ High School
year 9 student Hazel Wilson
has earned herself a place in the
New Zealand Secondary Schools’
Brass Band. Hazel will be playing
second horn in the band. She
had to audition for a place in the
prestigious band, which consists
of 42 of New Zealand’s most
talented high school brass and
percussion musicians.
PUPILS DESIGN PLAY AREA
Te Waka Unua School pupils
have helped design a new
playground for Woolston
Park. The city council wants
to build a playground next to
the school and remove the old
one. The pupils have consulted
with five pre-schools to come
up with suggestions for the
new equipment and layout.
Consultation will begin at the end
of September, with construction
planned for April.

The Palms gives back to schools
WITH HELP from the nearby
mall, Banks Avenue Primary
School will soon be riding the
airwaves.
The Palms Shopping Centre’s
“Shop for your School” campaign
saw 11 primary schools entering
the competition to win money,
each with a different goal in mind.
Throughout June, families
who signed up were able to take
their receipts for shopping to The
Palms and in exchange, receive
points for their school.
In first place was Banks Ave,
which received $3000 for its efforts,
Mairehau Primary came in
second, winning $2000, and third
was Queenspark with $1000.
Marshland and Shirley Primary
Schools each received $500.
“It’s been a great competition
for getting the whole school
involved in a common cause,
and the prize money is an added
bonus. We have encouraged the
children to bring their receipts to
school to get a heart token, and
when they earn 50 tokens they
get a values wrist band for togetherness,”
Toni Burnside Banks
Ave principal said.
As for the prize money, Mrs
Burnside said the fun has already
been had.
“As a school we are always
short of money so spending it
would not be difficult. We have

just set up a school radio station
and would love to use the money
for two chairs for our radio
hosts,” she said.
But how the rest of the money
is spent is up to the children and
their families, who did all the
hard work.
Runner-up Mairehau Primary
also enjoyed the school spirit of
the competition.
Bridey Hentschel chairwoman
of the Mairehau home and
school committee said the
school encouraged students
to bring in their receipts and
the school donated them collectively.
“We are so grateful for the
prize money and hope to use it
for more sports equipment and
for school trips,” Ms Hentschel
said.
Queenspark Primary hopes
to use the money for learning
resources.
Janet Vincent, The Palms Shopping
Centre marketing manager,
said the mall really wanted to
reward these schools for supporting
their local shopping centre
and community.
“Our relationship with Banks
Ave is a very special one and
they are close to our hearts,” she
said.
Sooty
shearwater
numbers
on the rise
• By Sarla Donovan
NUMBERS OF titi, or sooty
shearwater, continue to rise on
Banks Peninsula.
The efforts of the Banks Peninsula
Conservation Trust have
seen numbers of nesting adults
double in just a few years.
In 2010 there were 27 adult
pairs nesting. Now that figure is
up to 50, thanks in large part to
a predator proof fence.
Formed in 2001, the trust
arose out of a project called
Wildside, set up by farmer
Mark Armstrong 25 years ago.
There were only one pair
of titi left in Canterbury in
1995, so Mr Armstrong built
a chicken wire fence around
the remaining two and also
established a dense defence of
predator traps.
This was enough to ensure
the pair’s survival and six years
later the first chick fledged.
By 2009, there were 21 adult
pairs nesting and one chick
fledging. The following year,
27 adult pairs nested with 20
chicks fledging.

Application lodged to use

• By Julia Evans
THE SITE of the Shirley
Community Centre is set to
become the new home of Downer

The space has been used as

construction companies
since the centre was demolished
in 2012.
And with its rebuild not
expected to begin until 2019, the
city council is processing the
latest application for its use.
Downer is set to occupy the

Dudley Creek Flood Remediation
work.
Downer’s application said that
the established facilities at the
site are close to where it needs to
work and would be ideal.

It comes after residents in

Graeme Patu-Vaega’au will
move to Auckland at the end
of the year after signing a
three-year contact with the
Warriors.
Patu-Vaega’au, 17, has been
with the Keas since a junior and
made his debut with the premier
team on April 29 against the
Riccarton Knights.
“He scored an outstanding
try in that game and has cemented
a spot since then,” said
Linwood Keas coach Andrew
Auimatagi.
It was Patu-Vaega’au’s coach
that made the Warriors aware
of his talent. Auimatagi also has
a role with the NRL club as its
South Island talent scout.
“He’s always had a pretty good
frame and there’s always been
something about him,” said Auimatagi.
Last year, Auimatagi gave
Warriors recruitment and
development manager Tony Iro
a heads up on Patu-Vaega’au. Iro
had a chance to see the young
centre earlier this year and he
obviously made an impression.
The Catholic Cathedral College
student’s performances at
premier level have also seen him
involved in the Canterbury Bulls
wider training squad.
He is one of three players
from Canterbury to secure a
contract with the Warriors
this year, joining St Thomas’ of

It’s likely Patu-Vaega’au will
feature for the Warriors under-20

Rub marinade into chicken as
much as you can then roll each
chicken thigh in dry breadcrumbs.
Place in hot oil and fry on each
side until brown and cooked
through. Serve with plenty of
lime or lemon wedges.
MANGO, AVOCADO AND
VANILLA ICECREAM
Ingredients
2 Avocados, firm just-ripe,
diced
2 large Mangoes, ripe sweet,
diced
1 tsp Vanilla paste, or extract
3 Tbsp Liquid honey, or icing
sugar
3 Tbsp Coconut cream
1 Lime, freshly juiced
1 bottle Passionfruit syrup
Freeze avocado and mango
pieces on a tray or in a dish
lined with baking paper for eight
hours or overnight, until frozen
hard. Remove from freezer and
thaw for 5-10min before adding
to a food processor with vanilla,
honey, coconut cream and lime
juice.
Blitz until smooth. Serve
immediately or scoop into a
container and return to freezer
until wanted. Drizzle with the
passionfruit syrup when serving.
CINNAMON BAKED APPLES
Ingredients
6 Mahana apples
1 cup Marshmallows
¼ cup Raisins
6 Cinnamon sticks
⅓ cup Apple syrup
1 cup to serve Cream
¼ cup Shredded coconut
Directions
Heat oven to 180 deg C.
Lightly grease a baking dish
with oil.
Run a sharp knife around the
middle of each apple – this allows
the apple to expand and not
explode as it bakes.
Place apples in prepared dish.
Combine chopped marshmallows,
raisins and shredded coconut
in a bowl.
Place a cinnamon stick in
the centre of each apple where
the core was removed and pack
marshmallow mixture around
the cinnamon stick to fill cavity.
Drizzle filling with a little apple
syrup. Bake for 30min or until
golden brown. Serve drizzled
with extra apple syrup and with
cream or yoghurt on the side, if
desired.

Six fabulous years and still going strong!
The team of Fendalton Dental Surgery
takes this opportunity to thank their
loyal patients, the supportive Canterbury
dental fraternity and the wonderful local
community. They celebrate yet another
glorious anniversary after being forced
to relocate to this premises after the
earthquakes in 2011. It used to be called
Cambridge Dental Surgery while they
were in the CBD but since moving to this
lovely Fendalton suburb in July 2011.
Fendalton Dental Surgery, on the

after their oral health, which if not taken
care of can have detrimental effects on
their overall health. The gum disease,
Gingivitis is one of the main reasons
why people lose their teeth and can be
a social stigma with bad breath, while
research also indicates that gum disease
or otherwise called Gingivitis in pregnant
women can mean a higher chance of
premature birth and low birth weight.
Dry mouth or reduced salivary flow,
which is caused by certain medications
that people take can also lead to gum
problems and tooth decay. By visiting the
hygienist regularly, gum problems can be
prevented, and consequently tooth decay
as well as more serious health issues can
be avoided.
Fendalton Dental Surgery will soon add
to its suite of advanced dental equipment
with a state-of-the-art 3D CT scanner,
which will be used to scan jaws, enabling
the dentists to give a better diagnosis of
clients’ dental problems.
The Fendalton Dental Team invites
you and new patients to visit their

HOME & HEATING
Choosing the right heat
pump for your home
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much more
convenient than a log burner as you just need
to press a button. But how do you decide
what is best? Choosing the right sized heat
pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort
levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore
important to get professional advice from heat
pump experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it
is important to select the correct size for your
requirements that will handle the job but not
be unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat pump
is also extremely important. The cheapest
installation is a back to back where the outdoor
unit is positioned directly behind the indoor
unit however this is not necessarily always
the best option. It is vital that the indoor
unit is positioned in a place that will not be
constantly blowing on you. Also important, is
the location of the outdoor unit. Most people
do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly
in their outdoor entertaining area or right
outside their bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands
vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of
systems and price, so it depends on your
application as to which will be most suitable.
Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu,
Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are
all reliable brands backed up by good technical
after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but
also validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the
remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi
capabilities.
Heating is a major investment in your home
and it is vital to get the right advice.
Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,
installation and servicing of all major brands
of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers
ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as
to which system will suit your application
the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no
obligation quote and will come to your home
to see what is required. Visit our website at

The facts about
home ventilation
Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure
Under the New Zealand Building Code,
all buildings, including residential, need to
be suitably ventilated, either with opening
windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1
states: “The objective of this provision is
to safeguard people from illness or loss of
amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are
many benefits to forced, or mechanical,
ventilation over opening windows, including
warmth, security, reduction of outside noises
and reduction of condensation.
Traditional domestic ventilation systems
are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from
outside via the roof space and force the stale air
out through gaps around windows and doors.
The incoming air from these
systems has to be heated or
cooled to keep the house warm
in winter or cool in summer.
The Smooth-Air HEX390 is
a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It
extracts air from the house and
at the same time brings in fresh
air. These two streams of air
pass through a heat exchanger,
which warms incoming air in
winter and cools in summer if
air conditioning is being used.
This means that up to 80% of
the energy which would be

wasted using a traditional positive pressure
system is recovered, resulting in significant
energy savings and therefore lower heating or
cooling costs.
Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation
systems have been considerably more
expensive than traditional positive pressure
systems. However, with Smooth-Air’s unique
manufacturing capabilities, a HEX390
balanced pressure system can be installed for
a similar price as a traditional positive pressure
system.

SENIOR LIVING
GO-Advanced
Omega-PC Fish Oil
It is well known how important
omega-3 fatty acids are to good
health. It is estimated most people
don’t even get a third of the
recommended omega-3 fatty acids
on a weekly basis. Countries with
a higher amounts of omega-3 in
their diet are known to have lower
cardiovascular disease and, in
many cases, better overall health.
Recent research has shown
inflammation to be a big part of
disease and the ageing process.
Fish oil can help reduce
inflammation by providing
essential fatty acids required
by the body to heal itself and
maintain good health. Until now
most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty
acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however,
naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride
and phospholipid form but until recently
the phospholipid form was lost due to the
manufacturing process.
GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new
standards in fish oil as it contains
omega-3 attached to both triglycerides
and phospholipids. Studies have shown
GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better
absorbed, leading to increased levels of
vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs
thru giving the potential for more health
benefits.
121 Skyhawk Road
GO-Advanced Omega-PC is produced
from fresh wild deep sea cold water fish
using a new advanced and more natural
cold extraction process that better
preserves the natural nutrient profile found
in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP
standards and is molecularly distilled to
remove any containments, toxins and
heavy metals.

Osteoporosis is a serious condition
...but research shows it can be reversed!
Osteoporosis is not taken as a serious
condition by most people! Most people
don’t realise they have osteoporosis until
a fracture happens, as there are usually
no signs or symptoms. Fractures can
commonly be debilitating with chronic
pain and can lead to early mortality.
Fractures kill more women than all
gynaecological cancers put together and
one in six women taken to hospital with
a hip fracture, will not come out alive and
men fare even worse. Around one in three
women and one in twelve men are affected
with osteoporosis.
The most common osteoporotic fractures
are of the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip.
Vertebral collapse is a compression fracture
and causes back pain often with shooting
pains due to compression of the nerves.
Multiple vertebral fractures lead to a
stooped posture, loss of height and chronic
pain with reduced mobility. Hip fractures,
in particular, usually require prompt
surgery, as there is a serious risk associated
with it of deep vein thrombosis and
pulmonary embolism leading to increased
mortality.
Osteoporosis literally means “bones with
holes”. It occurs when bones lose minerals
such as calcium more quickly than the
body can replace them. Although calcium
is essential for bone health other minerals
like magnesium, zinc and trace minerals
like silica, boron, manganese, copper are
essential also. Vitamin’s D3 and K2 have
been shown to be essential in a bone
support program.
A less well known mineral strontium,
Osteoporosis, the weakening of the bone is a serious health threat
that often leads to severe pain, fractures & early mortality. Research
has found the bones can be re-mineralised & strengthened when
the required nutrients are present. Minerals calcium, magnesium &
vitamins D3 & K2 are essential but are not enough in many cases.
A missing link appears to be the mineral strontium.
Research shows strontium to positively affect bone density.
Bringing You the Best in Natural Health!
PEGASUS POST
that is naturally found in your bones
has been researched and found in
four landmark studies to actually
reverse bone loss when sufficient other
nutrients are present. One study of 1,649
postmenopausal women with osteoporosis
who had had at least one fracture were
divided into two groups. Both groups
took vitamin D and calcium supplements.
One group were also given 680mg/day
of strontium. After the three year study
the strontium group showed an unheard
of average bone growth of 8.1%. This
study shows that osteoporosis can not
only be halted but may even be reversed
and without the side effects of common
osteoporosis drugs.

shown in research
• Advanced new cold extraction better

Take a trip with
Third Aged Tours
Taking people aged over 50 on trips
around New Zealand and the world for
nearly 20 years has earned Third Age Tours
a brag book that Director Brenda Corby-
Yarrall says “businesses would give their
eye teeth for.’’
“Taking small groups of 10 – 24 people
means I can operate the tour in a relaxed,
companionable manner. We have an
absolute blast when we’re away. It’s all about
having fun”.
“Most of my trips are run annually
because they’re so
popular, but I’m always
adding new destinations
- like “Sicily, South Italy
& Vatican” + “Cuba”, as
people ask for them.’’
Brenda checks out
all accommodation
before booking it, and
ensures the party spends
at least a few nights at
each place. “That way
you don’t feel like you’re
living out of a suitcase.’’
Many clients now have
made over 20 tours with
us, one has completed a
whopping 27 tours.
“My clients tell me
they keep coming back
because of the size of the groups and our
relaxed manner. My motto is ‘There are no
strangers, only friends waiting to meet.’
We gather together for breakfast at
8.30am which sets us up for the day and
everybody thinks is a very civilised hour.’’
“I organise incredible trips at incredible
prices. Look around, you can’t find better
for all we include”.
