The NRL clubs and Super Rugby franchises have a wealth of talent to choose from but it takes a special kind of player to make it to the top. Plans for the new Woolston Community Facility on Ferry Rd include a nod to the distinctive brick of the former Woolston Community Library which once occupied the site. An artist’s impression of the new facility shows the community’s desire for brick and timber in the building is at the forefront of the design process. City council project manager Selena Robertson said the new facility would restore a focal point for the Woolston community. “We can’t wait to begin work on this new facility later this year and bring a community hub back to the village,” she said. “We have had two rounds of public consultation seeking comments about what should be included in the building, how community groups want to use it and a preference of materials HUB: The new Woolston Community Facility’s brick design gives a nod to the original building. for the exterior – brick and timber were the favoured options,” she said. “We feel like we have a great idea of what this community needs from the facility.” The project is expected to be completed by June next year. The building would include a public toilet, the volunteer library, a small meeting room and a hall for community groups to use. The former Library was badly damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, but the site was brought back to life through a transitional project last year. Children from local schools decorated large planter boxes and created decorative tiles for the site. The detailed design of the new facility is currently under way by the design team, which is made up of Ignite Architects and TM Consultants. Sally Buck, chairwoman of the Linwood-Central- Heathcote Community Board, said the planning stages marked a major step in the rebuilding process. “I am very excited to see this project finally happening and can’t wait for Woolston to have its community centre back.” The former Woolston Community Library was one of the first suburban libraries to open in Christchurch in 1871. In Brief SCHOOL FENCES UP Fencing has gone up around the site that will become the new Shirley Boys’ High School and Avonside Girls’ High School joint campus. Ground improvement work has begun and will be completed by late November, which is when work on the school’s foundations will start. MUSICIAN SELECTED Avonside Girls’ High School year 9 student Hazel Wilson has earned herself a place in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Brass Band. Hazel will be playing second horn in the band. She had to audition for a place in the prestigious band, which consists of 42 of New Zealand’s most talented high school brass and percussion musicians. PUPILS DESIGN PLAY AREA Te Waka Unua School pupils have helped design a new playground for Woolston Park. The city council wants to build a playground next to the school and remove the old one. The pupils have consulted with five pre-schools to come up with suggestions for the new equipment and layout. Consultation will begin at the end of September, with construction planned for April.
