assists Friends in continuing our Mission, but also offers

ART AND MONEY - THE 

MOST EXPENSIVE ART 

SOLD IN 2017 

With the current tyrannical Trump government 

and emphasis on the rich getting richer 

find art has joined the circus, with the most 

expensive piece of art sold this year coming 

in at 450 million. The painting which 

brought this amount was a painting by Leonardo 

da Vinci titled “Salvator Mundi” which 

in Latin is “savior of the world” It depicts a 

Christ figure with right hand raised dressed 

in clothes of the Rennissance period. Christies 

Auction House claimed the piece was the 

last da Vinci which was owned privately. The 

purchaser was a Saudi Prince Mohammed bin 

Salman Al Saud. It is going to be displayed in 

a recently opened Louvre Abu Dhabi. 

The most costly art piece by a U;S. artists was

a painting by Jean-Michel Basquait. Basquait 

was a New York artist identified as a part 

of the Neo Expressionist movement in the 

1980’s - 90’s. He began his career as a graffiti 

street artist, painting the walls of buildings 

in Manhattan/ He developed a reputation 

for this form of art form and began drawing 

and painting in conventional methods, 

using his street artist style. He was a friend 

of Andy Warhol until he died in 1987. One 

of his paintings is inspired by Warhol’s use of 

commercial products such as the soup can. 

Basquait’s version was of a Arm and Hammer 

soda box. The painting which brought 

the 110 million this past year, was of a large 

colorful skull figure. Basquait died in 1988 of 

a drug overdose. 

It is projected by art dealers and auction 

houses that the Trump tax plan will probably 

not benefit sales of art because some of the 

tax deduction schemes from the old tax plan 

do not carry the same benefits to the new. 

The question for the art world is, does money 

taint the real value of art? Is art bought for 

financial speculation or artistic quality? Who 

determines artistic quality? These questions 

can lead to more questions, Hopefully, 

artists will continue to create art for individual 

expression to enhance and add beauty 

to the world, not just for the monetary value 

as shown in auctions, and purchases by the 

oligarchs.

– Over Presidents’ Day Weekend, Art 

Palm Springs will present nearly 80 galleries 

from Asia, North and South America, 

and Europe, that represent more 

than 300 artists, and brings a world of art 

to the Palm Springs Convention Center. 

Since its inception in 2012, the increasingly 

popular fair has more than doubled 

the number of attending galleries from 

just over 30 in its first year to more than 

60 in 2017. The show draws thousands of 

art collectors and patrons each year from 

around the globe. 

Because of popular demand by its expanding 

audience and galleries, Urban Expositions 

has recently announced the addition 

of Presidents’ Day to the show’s schedule. 

“The growth of the fair’s popularity has 

made the addition of Monday an easy decision 

and a must for the fair,” said Donna 

Davies, Vice President of the Art Group 

for Urban Expositions, producer of Art 

Palm Springs. “We see Palm Springs continuing 

its’ trajectory as one of the most 

important markets for contemporary and 

modern art.” As an indicator of growth, 

the 2018 fair has confirmed larger gallery 

participation than the debut event in 2012 

and is expected to surpass last year’s participation. 

Since its early editions, Art Palm Springs 

has been a draw for curators, collectors, 

designers and celebrities that include 

Cheech Marin, Jodie Foster, Alexa Davalos, 

Udo Kier, Shelby Lynne, Rain Phoenix, 

and award-winning designers Christopher 

Kennedy, Dann Foley and Erin Valencich. 

With its pristine deserts and grand mountain 

views, Palm Springs has been an arts 

haven for decades. Artists such as from 

Agnes Pelton, Maynard Dixon and Sir

The city’s fine art profile began in 1938 

with founding of the Palm Springs Desert 

Museum, that encompassed desert arts 

and environment, that changed its name 

and focus to fine arts in 2005 to the Palm 

Springs Art Museum. 

In 2012, Art Palm Springs premiered,

In 2017, Palm Springs drew international 

attention with the debut of Desert X, a 

biennial exhibit featuring 16 artists. As a

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

Well President Potty-Mouth is back at it. 

This week he was able to alienate, slander 

and abuse two continents; Africa and South 

America. Calling these countries “shit-holes” 

not only proved his racism, once and for all, 

but insulted the very nations we are working 

with to defeat ISIS and other terror organizations. 

He also did a double hitter on Palestine. First 

announcing the move of our embassy from 

Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, all but ending the 

peace process AND THEN announcing he 

may pull all humanitarian aid from Palestine. 

These two things, of course, has caused the 

Palestine Authority to announce they may 

withdraw their recognition of Israel. 

Lastly on the world stage, he cancelled his 

visit to England to dedicate the new embassy 

in London, saying it cost too much and that 

President Obama screwed things up in the 

sale of the old embassy and the building of the 

new – ooops! The sale and the construction 

contracts were issued under President George 

W. Bush and not Obama. Reality is that 

the London Mayor told Trump he was not 

welcome in London and there were already 

planned protests by hundreds of thousands of 

Brits protesting Trump and his policies.

Controlling the Senate stops his over reach on 

changing the judiciary. Flipping governor’s 

seats puts the Dems in the driver seat for 

decennial redistricting of congressional and 

legislative lines. 

This past week I saw two films; The Post with 

Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep and Mark Felt, 

with Liam Neeson. Both, of course dealt 

with the Watergate coverup and the crimes 

by then President Nixon and his circle. It is 

amazing looking at these two movies and the 

similarities there are with what is happening 

now – even with Trump paraphrasing Nixon’s 

line – “if the President does something that 

makes it legal”. Well, we found out in the ‘70s 

that this was not the case and now in 2018 we 

are destined to repeat the lesson. 

Unless it blows up, I am planning on a trip to 

Israel in February representing the Southern 

CA Association of Governments, at a conference 

convened by the mayors of Israel’s cities. 

It will be fascinating to see this country for 

the first time, but also to hear what folks there 

think of our President and country. I’ll keep 

you posted.
