Davies departing to be
involved in ‘radical’ politics
• By Tom Doudney
DEPARTING Hagley-
Ferrymead Community Board
member Joe Davies is off to
Brexit-land, but will keep in
touch with grass roots politics in
Christchurch for the remainder
of his term.
Mr Davies, 21, will leave for
the United Kingdom in the next
two weeks, where he hopes to
become involved with “radical”
politics in the wake of the country’s
vote to leave the European
Union.
The move will also enable
him to spend more time with
his Swedish girlfriend Lovisa
Limseth.
Although he will not seek
re-election in October, he has decided
not to resign early, in spite
of not being able to attend the
last five board meetings, so that
he can keep in touch with what
is happening in the ward for the
remainder of his term.
Mr Davies said he had asked
for a resolution to be passed
at the next community board
meeting allowing him to finish
his term without picking up a
salary.
LOVE AND COUNTRY: Departing Hagley-Ferrymead
Community Board member Joe Davies will soon return to the
United Kingdom where he was born.
“I think Brexit has provided
one of the most radical
opportunities for politics in
my lifetime and, although I
am a Kiwi, my blood is
British.
“I think that we need to
stop wallowing in self-pity at a
democratic verdict and get on
with it, so I am going to return
to Europe to witness these
radical times.”
Mr Davies reiterated his desire
to become a New Zealand MP in
the future.
“It has been an absolute honour
to serve the people and I say
with absolute certainty that I will
return to New Zealand when the
radical times arrive here.”
In Brief
STREAM RESTORATION
A stream restoration project
in Hoon Hay has been put on
hold because one of the adjacent
landowners wants to sell their
property. The project involved
the adjacent landowners, the
Christchurch-West Melton
Zone Committee, Environment
Canterbury and the city council,
which has bought some of the
land. ECan land management
advisor Shelly Washington said
the project might still go ahead
in future depending on available
funds and the interest of all
parties involved.
ON GOING ROAD WORKS
Part of Sparks Rd is now oneway
due to road repairs. Stronger
Christchurch Infrastructure
Rebuild Team started work on
the road between Hoon Hay
Rd and Maryhill Ave earlier
this month and the road is
expected to be closed for another
two weeks while repairs are
carried out. Detours and traffic
management will be in place.
RE-OPENING: The Victoria Park visitors centre has
re-opened. The building was damaged following the
February 22, 2011 earthquake and was closed while it
received repairs and strengthening. The rock and brick work
was strengthened and new displays were added.
