However, neither party is keen on the suggestion with both saying they would rather get on with the decision making process. The Cashmere Tennis Club has resource consent to install 10 8m high lighting poles to illuminate four of its courts and allow play at night but it still needs final approval from the city council’s head of parks. Nearby residents have opposed the proposal due to concerns about the effects of light spill over and noise generated by players. Recent consultation found two out of every three submitters opposed the lights. The Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board had been expected to make a recommendation on the matter at its meeting today. However, that has been put on hold after chairwoman Karolin Potter requested that an independent facilitator meet with both parties to identify common grounds and interests that might allow an agreed solution. The delay means the matter may not come back to the board until after October’s local body elections. City council staff have recommended that approval be given to install the lights but with the conditions that they should only be used five days a week and only until 9pm at night, rather than seven days until 9.30pm as the club had sought. Club committee member Stu McHarg said the community board’s decision to delay its recommendation was very disappointing. “It’s a huge delay,” Mr McHarg said. “The only people who have missed out are all the young juniors because they can’t get coached and they have to travel way over to Wilding Park or the poor souls miss out altogether.” Crichton Tce resident Terry Young said residents didn’t want mediation as they weren’t interested in a compromise. “The residents don’t want lights, nothing has changed but we are not going to be able to have our submission on August 2 because they have taken us off the agenda,” Mr Young said.
