Porter is playing Puss in Puss in Boots, now playing at The Court Theatre. She decided to try out for the role because of the character. “I thought Puss has a really dry sense of humour that adults in the audience would enjoy, and I just thought this is really cool,” she said. During the day, Porter can be found working at the cafe in The Court Theatre and when she’s not, she is rehearsing and performing her numerous roles. The cast started rehearsing for the show three weeks before opening night. PHOTO: WENDY RILEY/COURT THEATRE Plan to update cemetery map • By Caitlin Miles AN OUT of date map of burial plots at Sydenham Cemetery could be getting an upgrade after a group discovered that it does not correspond to some graves. The Somerfield Residents’ Association discovered the map on a noticeboard outside the front of the Simeon and Roker Sts entrance does not tally with some burial plots making it a struggle for people to find the location of family and friends. The group first came across the problem when it was asked recently by a woman in the United Kingdom to help locate the grave of her nephew. But the sign, which was built in the 1970s or 1980s, had the wrong details, leading the person from the association on a wild goose chase. Chairwoman Julie Tobbell said it was only when a member pointed out the issue to them, that they realised how widespread the problem was with the map. “It is like trying to find a needle in a haystack,” she said. She suspected the problem was because the plots were not put on the map right in the beginning, and since more people have been buried there, it has not be updated. “It’s for respect for those buried there really,” she said. She said the city council told her it was not on its radar and the association would need to lobby the new appointments on the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board after the elections on Saturday. City council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said the sign was in poor condition and it would cost between $1000 and $3000 to update. The project could take about six months, because of the research involved in updating the map. OUT OF DATE: The sign just inside the gate at Sydenham Cemetery needs the map updated so it matches burial plots. It has been causing confusion as to where graves are located.
