Work starts to remove

Heritage Church rubble

• By Noah Graham

RUBBLE FROM the Sydenham

Heritage Church is finally being

cleared.

The church was controversially

demolished after the February

22, 2011, earthquake. More than

six years later work has begun

to clear the eyesore that sits

on the corner of Colombo and

Brougham Sts.

Sydenham

Heritage Trust

chairwoman

Dorothy

Haywood (left)

said it was a

“wonderful

day” that the

rubble was

finally beginning to be

cleared.

“I’m thrilled. Absolutely

thrilled.”

Mrs Haywood said it would

not take long for the rubble to be

removed from the site.

“We are under way and

[the contractors] will move

quickly.

“It should look nice and tidy

soon.”

The rubble on the church

site was supposed to have

been moved before Christmas.

However, contractors weren’t

signed on until January.

The church was built in 1878

and Mrs Haywood said the

trust hopes to recover several

artefacts important to

Sydenham. They include

photos and trophies from the

old Sydenham School and

marble and regular plaques

commemorating various people

from the area.

Once the rubble is shifted the

trust wants to make gardens on

the site, with long-term plans for

a building for the community to

use, along with a display of the

recovered artefacts and history of

Sydenham.

PERSEVERANCE IS the key to

getting what you deserve.

Eastgate Shopping Centre bus

stop users and nearby property

owners have shown (p5) that if

you don’t back down, someone

will listen to you.

The bus stop patrons stuck to

their guns and demanded they

should have the same treatment

as other areas and city council has

answered with $600,000 weatherproof

bus shelters to be installed.

On the same page, the Spreydon

Neighbourhood Network has too

shown their perseverance having

asked for a no right hand turn out

Hopefully, their no-back-down

New classrooms for Cashmere

• By Noah Graham

A CASHMERE school has

celebrated the completion of

the first phase of its $8 million

redevelopment.

Cashmere Primary School welcomed

Associate Education Minister

Nikki Kaye onto the school’s

new deck last week with a kapa

haka in celebration of a new $3

million two-storey building.

The Karamu building,

which houses

nine classrooms, was

completed earlier

this year and has

been used by the

school this term.

Gavin

Burn

The building is

the first major step

towards transforming

the school from traditional

classrooms to an adaptive and

innovative learning environment,

principal Gavin Burn said.

Mr Burn said the minister

was shown around the school’s

new classrooms and facilities

by a group of student executives

and planted a karamu tree in the

school’s garden to commemorate

the day.

“It was a really successful day,

in spite of the bad, wet weather,”

he said.

“It was just nice to be able to

celebrate the building and the

effort that has gone into it.”

Mr Burn said with the completion

of the Karamu building, the

rest of the year will be dedicated

to renovating the existing school

buildings.

Once the redevelopment is

complete, the school will have 20

new classrooms for the pupils to

use, Mr Burn said.

The school’s board of trustees

chairman, Brian Ellwood, said

the opening of the new building

is an acknowledgement of the

collaborative effort.

“These fantastic new spaces

have endless potential, which we

are only just beginning to explore

together,” he said.

STUCK IN: Associate

Education Minister Nikki

Kaye and Cashmere Primary

School chairman Brian

Ellwood planted a karamu

tree on the school gardens to

celebrate the completion of a

$3 million two-storey building,

which is the first phase of its

$8 million development.

In Brief

CAR PARK IN DOUBT

A lack of funds could stop a

proposed temporary car park

on the old Smith St nursery site

from going ahead. The Linwood-

Central-Heathcote Community

Board is trying to find funds

to create a temporary car park

on the Smith St site opposite

Linwood Park for people to use

during the rugby league season.

Councillor Yani Johanson said

there was a need for parking in

the winter as the street is often

crowded and can be a danger to

people crossing it.

ALDER TREE FACES AXE

The Linwood-Central-Heathcote

Community Board has approved

the removal of an alder tree

outside 18 Claymore St after a

resident wrote to the board saying

brown, rusty stains were left on

her property after it rained. Board

chairwoman Sally Buck said the

board recommended its removal

and are wanting to know about

the effects other alder trees are

having in the area.

LEASE GRANTED

The Huntsbury Community

Centre has had its 35-year lease

granted by the Spreydon-

Cashmere Community Board. The

board approved the lease for the

community centre to remain at the

30F Huntsbury Ave last week.

Food hub ‘great local initiative’

Woolston

Community

co-ordinator

Carol Brown

writes about

Michael Reynolds’

ambition to get a selfsustainable

food hub in

Woolston and the benefits

it would bring to the area

There has been so much

attention on the bad stuff

happening around Woolston, it’s

time to highlight the fact that

there are actually good things

going on too.

I have stumbled across a great

local initiative getting under

way. It’s called the Roimata

Community Food Hub and it’s

proposed to go in to Radley Park

as an orchard and community

garden.

This project is something

which I think will benefit the

greater community immensely

by strengthening community

spirit, making partnerships and

working together for the greater

good.

Not only will there be the

obvious benefit of fresh, locallygrown

fruit and vegetables

reducing your carbon footprint,

but there will also be hidden

benefits like sharing knowledge,

PROPOSED: Radley Park could be the site for the Roimata

Community Food Hub if the community rallies behind the idea.

learning where and how our

food is grown, and therapy. Gardening

is very therapeutic – it

gives you a sense of achievement

and belonging, making you feel

worthwhile.

Perhaps you could make some

wonderful new friends while

you get healthy consuming

vitamins and minerals from the

harvest.

We have an amazing resource

at our fingertips. Radley Park is

a big piece of land which largely

goes under-utilised.

The gardens will be almost

pollutant-free because there is

no traffic going past. The first

stage will include planting out

fruit trees, which it is possible

could happen in the next month.

The city council and Linwood-

Central-Heathcote Community

Board are supporting this venture

and will hopefully grant

some funds.

You could be a part of transforming

and evolving the park

into an even better public place

– a comprehensive community

food resource. So don’t be shy,

get involved.

Stephen Wickham writes

in response to Southern

– Opposition to multi-unit

housing development

mounts (March 28).

I can empathise with the

residents who feel they will

be most affected by Multay

Developments Ltd’s building

proposal of four two-storey

units.

In my experience, wellplanned

or good development

seldom attracts criticism, but

poor or over-development does.

And I believe this could be the

case here as the area involved

is a very long and narrow

section. Two well-designed units

complementing Studholme St

would be far more desirable

than what I understand has been

proposed. But then again, I’m not

a second-tier developer wanting

to farm people for maximum

profits.

Reverend Michael Kerr

writes about the plan to

repair Ferrymead’s Cob

Cottage

In the March 14 edition of

Southern View, I was interested

to read that Cob Cottage is

to be repaired following the

earthquakes.

In the 1950s, I lived at Te Awa

Kura Tce on St Andrews Hill

with my late parents and

sisters.

Everyday I would pass the

cottage on my way into Christchurch.

Then, many years ago I obtained

a painting by L Baire Fribery

of the cottage, with the old

Ferrymead Bridge and the Yacht

Club building behind it.

The framed painting hangs on

my wall as a constant reminder of

days of yore.

Memories are precious and I

was glad to read the cottage will

be restored.

Home building is as much about understanding the

landscape and the client as it is the plan and the

materials. From our office in Rolleston, Canterbury our

small company has built a huge range of homes that are

distinctive, stylish, durable and cost-effective.

From clever, compact homes to three bedroom townhouses

to large scale, expansive country style homes, our work

spans all types of house building.

Since 2004 we have carefully built, among other things, a

reputation for constructing high quality houses.

An artisan is someone who is highly skilled in a particular

expertise, a hands-on craftsman – someone who is

passionate about the quality results they produce.

With decades in the business the team at Artisian Homes

have worked in all areas of residential construction. There

are obvious differences between building a two-bedroom

home compared to a six bedroom one. Irrespective, our

overall approach remains the same.

While we have a sound reputation for carefully crafted

home building we also are renowned for getting the right

result no matter what the challenge. Building with difficult

access, looming timelines or tight budgets is just a fact of

life for us. All our tradespeople are qualified and registered

or licensed. Our abilities to design and build a range of

houses have increased over the years, as has our skill and

overall capacity. While we don’t have the franchises of our

larger competitors we do have their networks and buying

power. Which means our clients receive the most costeffective

results possible.

At Artisan Homes, our passion is building homes for

people who appreciate the work that goes into what will,

ultimately, be a home they love to live in.

$600k bus shelter for Linwood

• By Bridget Rutherford

BUS STOPS next to Eastgate

Shopping Centre will be

upgraded after patrons

complained they were not

getting the same service as other

areas.

The city council is looking at

installing $600,000 weatherproof

bus shelters to replace the

current ones on Buckleys Rd,

along with a $500,000 signalised

pedestrian crossing.

It came after there were complaints

last year that Northlands

and Westfield Riccarton had received

upgrades, while Eastgate

was still waiting.

Property owners also called

for the stop to be moved away

from Buckleys Rd, as they said

patrons were littering, urinating

and defecating on their properties.

City council staff have looked

at four options, in the shopping

centre’s car park at the rear

entrance, the Cranley St former

library site, to upgrade the current

Buckleys Rd shelter with a

waiting lounge, or to upgrade it

without the lounge.

Their recommended option

was to upgrade the current shelter

as it would be cheaper, and

the bus route would not need to

be diverted.

NEW: The

Northlands

Shopping Centre

bus stop was

one of two that

was prioritised

for upgrading

over those in

Linwood.

But that would require consultation

with neighbouring

property owners, businesses and

the mall.

The Linwood-Central-Heathcote

Community Board decided

on Monday to ask city council

staff to further evaluate upgrading

the bus shelter, so it could be

included in the 2018 Long Term

Plan.

In July, the then Hagley-

Ferrymead Community Board

requested the Greater Christchurch

Public Transport Committee

write a report

looking at options for a covered

interchange for Linwood.

The report said there was

insufficient passenger demand

to justify a waiting lounge.

UPGRADE:

The bus stop

on Buckleys

Rd next to

Eastgate

will likely be

upgraded

with a

weatherproof,

larger shelter.

PHOTOS:

GEOFF

SLOAN

It said in 2005, the city council

identified Eastgate as a key

public transport interchange

site. In 2008, a review by Abley

Transportation showed it to be a

crucial location.

Views sought

car park exit

• By Noah Graham

THE PUBLIC is being asked to

lodge submissions to the city

council to make the Barrington

shopping centre car park exit

safer.

The Spreydon Neighbourhood

Network is calling for the community

to make submissions to

the city council in a hope they can

get funding allocated from the

Annual Plan to enforce a no rightturn

out of the mall and a traffic

island on Barrington St.

Network secretary Sonya Hodder

said after the group presented

their deputation to the Spreydon-

Cashmere Community Board

last week, the only chance for the

project to be funded was through

the Annual Plan.

The network has asked for

changes to the mall’s exit to stop

vehicles from turning right out of

the Barrington shopping centre

as it put pedestrians, cyclists and

the elderly in danger, Mrs Hodder

said.

Spreydon-Cashmere Community

Board chairwoman Karolin

Potter said there was no alternative

to fund the project other than

through city council.

Submissions close on April 21.

Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or

could it be mainly my muscles?

The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with

a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and

senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.

PhysiotheraPist ietje van

stolk suggests that a major part of the

pain could be due to muscle pain rather

than simply arthritis. “even if an x-ray

shows arthritis, the reason for the pain

may be the muscles around the joint,”

she explains. The images show how

a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back

muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain

are the red areas in the drawings), a knot

in a muscle on the back of the shoulder

blade can give a deep pain in the front

of the shoulder and a muscle knot all the

way near the groin can give an ache in

the knee (especially at night in bed).

ietje recalls one case where an 89

year old client with severe arthritis who

walked with a stick, told her, “i will

end up in a wheelchair, i cannot put

any weight through my right leg due to

pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within

4 treatments, she was walking with

her stick but without the severe pain,”

says ietje. “The arthritis was one of the

factors that made her muscles spasm but

the other was that older people move

less and the flexed position the hip is

in when we sit is particularly bad for

the hip.” ietje is happy with the fact that

although the client was 89 and could

have been “given up on” or told to live

with the pain, she made a difference to

her health and wellbeing.

at Physical sense, hands-on

to release the muscles. The client

also gets a home exercise program

designed to mobilize and stretch the

joint, strengthen the important core

muscles and increase general strength

and balance. They teach a movement

sequence that stretches the joint in all

directions whilst the client is able to lie
