There are certainly many
things we still need to tackle and
discuss. We can also support
other local resident groups as
well. I try to attend other group
meetings when possible as well
to find out how other people
are doing things. They will do
something different and it’s great
getting those ideas on how to
tackle certain problems.

Could you tell me a bit about
your job?
I work part-time as a nurse at
the hospital and I love it. Because
I am part-time, I feel that I have
a good balance of keeping my
hand in nursing, but also having
a balance with motherhood and
the community work. I think it’s

important to have a good balance
of everything. My passion has
always been nursing and that’s
helping others so I guess it coincides
with the community work.
How long have you been a
nurse for and what drew you
into it?
It’s been 26 or 27 years I
think. I’ve always liked caring

for others. I had my father die
when I was 13 from a heart
attack. I don’t know if that has
got anything to do with it but it
could be what has made me, me.
Ultimately, it could have made
me want to save other people.
With nursing, I basically started
after school. I did it as soon
as I was able. Although, I started
volunteering work before I was
able to do nursing. I volunteered
at the Princess Margaret Hospital
and worked at the chemist
so I have always been interested
in that line of work. I delivered
subscriptions and did babysitting
and all the usual things at that
age.
How did you end up living in
Somerfield?
I actually grew up in Hoon
Hay. I’ve had half my life in
Hoon Hay and half my life in
Somerfield. I certainly haven’t
gone far.
There was a nursing shortage
when I finished my training. So I
was tossing up the idea of going
overseas, but I managed to get
a job before then and secured
a house in Somerfield, so that
determined what I was going
to do. I do love Somerfield. It’s
always been a great area. It’s so
close to town, so close to the hills
and so close to the river and yet
far enough away. It has always
struck me as a family community
as well. Good for schools and

close enough to shops.
Is there anything you like to
do in your spare time?
I enjoy going on holidays
to Twizel and going fishing
or boating with the family. I
don’t have terribly much spare
time at the moment but I enjoy
doing a bit of photography. Just
maintaining a family keeps
me busy as well. I also like to
renovate the house. I like the old
character. Sanding back wood
and creating projects like that,
really.
Could you tell me a bit about
your family?
I have three children, two girls
and a boy, who are becoming
more independent now. I have
got two at Cashmere High
School and one in their last year
at Somerfield School. That will be
a bit of an end to an era for me –
last child at Somerfield School.
We have a golden retriever and
a family of four budgies. I have
been married to my husband,
Craig, for 21 years and our
anniversary is in November.
Craig works from home with
his own shade sails business
as a canvas fabricator, which
was really useful when the
earthquakes hit as he was able to
be there for the kids.
I’m fortunate to have really
good support from my family as
my role is quite time consuming
sometimes. My family is my
greatest accomplishment and
I appreciate the great support
they have always offered with my
community interests. I am very
proud of my children.
