Fast track for realignment of

busy Cashmere intersection

A PLAN to improve a

Cashmere intersection for

safety reasons is being fast

tracked.

The proposal is to install

traffic lights and realign the

intersection of Cashmere, Hoon

Hay and Worsleys Rds with

work beginning in May.

The upgrades have been fast

tracked by the city council due

to wider safety concerns.

“This project

was brought

forward by city

council due to

community

concerns

around safety

for drivers,

Aaron

Haymes

pedestrians

and cyclists

at this

intersection,” city council

transport operations manager

Aaron Haymes said.

The intersection serves as the

entrance to the Christchurch

Adventure Park and the new

Cashmere Estate subdivision.

Mr Haymes said the

intersection had experienced a

surge in use when the adventure

park opened.

He said high numbers were

also expected to resume when

the park re-opened.

“We recognise that this area

has had a huge increase in

traffic due to the Adventure

Park, and we need to act

quickly to make it safe for

all road users,” Mr Haymes

said.

The improvements include

the installation of traffic lights,

two new pedestrian crossings,

the relocation of a bus stop, and

construction of speed humps on

Worsleys Rd, near the Hurunui

St intersection.

The consultation, which the

public can submit via the city

council’s website, proposes two

options.

The only difference relates to

car parking on Cashmere Rd.

Due to the additional road

width required for traffic

at the intersection, there is not

enough road space to retain on

street car parking on both sides

of Cashmere Rd, Mr Haymes

said.

“The main difference in the

consultation options relates

to car parking and whether

parking in the vicinity of the

Cracroft Shopping Centre is

provided on the north or the

south side of the road,” he said.

There will be a drop-in

session on August 14 between

5 and 7pm at Silverbacks Café

in the Cracroft Shopping

Centre.

SAFETY CONCERNS: The Worsleys, Cashmere and Hoon Hay Rds intersection will be upgraded

with work starting in May.

Work on hub to begin in November

Selena

Robertson

A COMMUNITY centre will

return to the heart of Woolston

with construction beginning in

November.

Plans for the new Woolston

Community Facility on Ferry Rd

include a nod to the distinctive

brick of the former Woolston

Community

Library which

once occupied

the site.

An artist’s

impression of

the new facility

shows the community’s

desire

for brick and

timber in the

building is at the forefront of the

design process.

City council project manager

Selena Robertson said the new

facility would restore a focal

point for the Woolston community.

“We can’t wait to begin work

on this new facility later this

year and bring a community

hub back to the village,” she

said.

“We have had two rounds

of public consultation seeking

comments about what should be

included in the building, how

community groups want to use

it and a preference of materials

for the exterior – brick and timber

were the favoured options,”

she said.

“We feel like we have a great

idea of what this community

needs from the facility.”

The project is expected to be

completed by June next year. The

building would include a public

toilet, the volunteer library, a

small meeting room and a hall

for community groups to use.

The former library was badly

damaged in the 2010 and 2011

earthquakes, but the site was

brought back to life through a

transitional project last year.

Children from local schools

decorated large planter boxes

and created decorative tiles for

the site.

The detailed design of the new

facility is currently under way by

the design team, which is made

up of Ignite Architects and TM

Consultants. Sally Buck, chairwoman

of the Linwood-Central-

Heathcote Community Board,

said the planning stages marked

a major step in the rebuilding

process.

“I am very excited to see this

project finally happening and

can’t wait for Woolston to have

its community centre back.”

The former Woolston Community

Library was one of the

first suburban libraries to open

in Christchurch in 1871.

RAPAKI RD NO PARKING

The city council will begin

consultation on August 7

over whether to install no

parking restrictions on parts

of Rapaki Rd and Vernon

Tce to improve sight lines for

motorists. After the feedback

is received, a proposal would

go to the Spreydon-Cashmere

Community Board in October

for a decision. Work could begin

in November. A drop-in session

will be held at the Scout Den,

Centaurus Rd, Cashmere, on

August 14, 4.30-6pm.

PUPILS BEHIND PLAY

AREA DESIGN

Te Waka Unua School pupils

have helped design a new

playground for Woolston

Park. The city council wants

to build a playground next to

the school and remove the old

one. The pupils have consulted

with five pre-schools to come

up with suggestions for the

new equipment and layout.

The plan includes a swing-set,

a 4m spinning climbing tower,

a nature obstacle course, a

seat, and a connecting path

through a new gate to the

school. Consultation will begin

at the end of September, with

construction planned for

April.

Woolston Cut dredge plan to alleviate flood risk

• By Bridget Rutherford

A $2.3 million project to dredge

the Woolston Cut of silt and

liquefaction will be done so it

continues to provide effective

flood remediation.

City council land drainage manager

Keith Davison said the cut

was about 50 per cent full of silt

and liquefaction.

But he said that did not impact

how it operated

during the recent

flooding that began

on July 21.

“For this to

continue to operate

effectively it

is necessary to

Keith Davison

maintain capacity

by dredging from

time to time,” Mr Davison said.

The cut was built in the 1980s

to prevent flooding in the lower

Heathcote River area, and for

other catchment-wide improvements,

such as the upper Heathcote

detention basins.

Water from the Heathcote flows

into the cut, which can then be

opened during floods using the

tidal barrage.

Mr Davison said it had never

been dredged.

He said the recent flooding was

unlikely to have an impact on the

project timings and costs.

“The flooding does highlight to

everyone how important it is to

have an effective and fully operational

land drainage and stormwater

network and it is important

that the cut and barrage remain

operational.”

He said the tidal barrage would

have helped flood protection by

opening and providing additional

downstream capacity.

“As I understand it the

current silt levels in the cut will

not have impacted upon flooding

as the original design always

envisaged and allowed for

reasonable levels of silt build-up,”

he said.

“Having said this, current silt

levels have now reached a point

where it would be good practice to

dredge as further build-up could

start to begin to risk impacting

upon operation.”

He said city council staff were

now seeking funding approval for

the project.

If it was granted for the current

financial year, the work could start

in October, he said.

As part of the project, the

footpath earthquake repairs at

Staunton Esplanade Reserve would

be delayed, as heavy machinery

would need to go through.

The footpath repairs are likely to

take place early next year.

Roberts grabs gold at schools champs

• By Andrew King

SOMERFIELD’S OISIN Roberts

fought his way to a gold medal

at the New Zealand secondary

schools judo tournament held in

Lincoln.

Roberts, 17, won the under-

73kg category during the

tournament held on July 15-16

to add to his already impressive

tally of medals.

“The first thing that went

through my head was probably

relief that all my fights were over

and I had managed to win them

all,” Roberts said.

In total, he has won two gold

and three silver medals during

his time competing in national

tournaments, as well as a bronze

medal in 2015 at the Oceania

judo championships.

The win allows him to look

ahead to bigger and better events,

such as the Olympics and Commonwealth

Games, which he is

SPORTS

keen to compete in.

“It would be awesome if I could

compete at the Olympics or Commonwealth

Games, but I still need

to consider whether this is where

I want to take my judo and how I

would balance this with the rest of

my life,” he said.

Roberts’ father got him into the

sport at an early age and he loved

the competitive side of it.

“When you get to stand at the

top of the podium, that is when

you realise that all your hard work

was worth it in the end,” he said.

“Both my parents and my

coach said that I had fought very

well and thoroughly deserved the

medal. My parents also said that

they were very proud of me.”

Piling on the pressure aim for Cashmere HS

• By Andrew King

CASHMERE HIGH will want

to keep the pressure on the top

of the table when they take on

Lincoln High in the Connetics

first XI football competition

tomorrow night.

Cashmere moved into third

position on the table after a 3-0

victory over Middleton Grange

last week.

They were also helped by St

Thomas beating top of the table

St Andrew’s, who have now

dropped to fourth.

Cashmere and Lincoln have

both won titles in the past and

will know that taking three

points from this game, with two

rounds to go, is vital to their

season.

Coach Craig Squires said the

volume has to be turned up for

the next few games in preparation

for nationals and to keep in

the race for the title.

“The boys have set the goal of

winning the premier competition

so we must keep winning

to maintain our top four spot,”

he said.

Squires hoped a few key players

who are still injured will be

ready for the Lincoln clash but

said the last two games have

resulted in clean sheets, making

him one happy coach.

The game will be played at the

Christchurch Football Centre at

7.30pm.

South Island, an area of diverse landscapes and environments from which to

draw inspiration for their work.

Tim’s carved wooden work for ‘Changing Stories’ exhibition explores the

traditions associated with the reverence given to relics and remains, using

the cultural practices of making intricate containers that different cultures

fashion to hold these precious objects, Maori wakahuia (treasure boxes)

and wakatupapaku (bone boxes) and European reliquaries which held the

bones of saints, are the starting point for these pieces. Found remains of

creatures and objects from the natural environment in his home area. Tim

has constructed stories around fictional and whimsical; taking an object and

giving it a new narrative and honouring its previous existence.

Ché’s work for this exhibition is formed by his

passion for botany and natural processes;

exploring the patterns created by plant forms

by the way water changes and repeats a flow

pattern by decay and renewal. He uses recycled

copper panels through a process of serendipitous

experimentation. Ché has developed a fluid and

intuitive approach and has developed methods of

GO-Advanced

Omega-PC Fish Oil

It is well known how important

omega-3 fatty acids are to good

health. It is estimated most people

don’t even get a third of the

recommended omega-3 fatty acids

on a weekly basis. Countries with

a higher amounts of omega-3 in

their diet are known to have lower

cardiovascular disease and, in

many cases, better overall health.

Recent research has shown

inflammation to be a big part of

disease and the ageing process.

Fish oil can help reduce

inflammation by providing

essential fatty acids required

by the body to heal itself and

maintain good health. Until now

most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty

acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however,

naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride

and phospholipid form but until recently

the phospholipid form was lost due to the

manufacturing process.

GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new

standards in fish oil as it contains

omega-3 attached to both triglycerides

and phospholipids. Studies have shown

GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better

absorbed, leading to increased levels of

vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs

thru giving the potential for more health

benefits.

121 Skyhawk Road

GO-Advanced Omega-PC is produced

from fresh wild deep sea cold water fish

using a new advanced and more natural

cold extraction process that better

preserves the natural nutrient profile found

in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP

standards and is molecularly distilled to

remove any containments, toxins and

heavy metals.

Further info on this revolutionary new

fish oil and its benefits is available from

Osteoporosis is a serious condition

...but research shows it can be reversed!

Osteoporosis is not taken as a serious

condition by most people! Most people

don’t realise they have osteoporosis until

a fracture happens, as there are usually

no signs or symptoms. Fractures can

commonly be debilitating with chronic

pain and can lead to early mortality.

Fractures kill more women than all

gynaecological cancers put together and

one in six women taken to hospital with

a hip fracture, will not come out alive and

men fare even worse. Around one in three

women and one in twelve men are affected

with osteoporosis.

The most common osteoporotic fractures

are of the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip.

Vertebral collapse is a compression fracture

and causes back pain often with shooting

pains due to compression of the nerves.

Multiple vertebral fractures lead to a

stooped posture, loss of height and chronic

pain with reduced mobility. Hip fractures,

in particular, usually require prompt

surgery, as there is a serious risk associated

with it of deep vein thrombosis and

pulmonary embolism leading to increased

mortality.

Osteoporosis literally means “bones with

holes”. It occurs when bones lose minerals

such as calcium more quickly than the

body can replace them. Although calcium

is essential for bone health other minerals

like magnesium, zinc and trace minerals

like silica, boron, manganese, copper are

essential also. Vitamin’s D3 and K2 have

been shown to be essential in a bone

support program.

A less well known mineral strontium,

Osteoporosis, the weakening of the bone is a serious health threat

that often leads to severe pain, fractures & early mortality. Research

has found the bones can be re-mineralised & strengthened when

the required nutrients are present. Minerals calcium, magnesium &

vitamins D3 & K2 are essential but are not enough in many cases.

A missing link appears to be the mineral strontium.

Research shows strontium to positively affect bone density.

Bringing You the Best in Natural Health!

SOUTHERN VIEW

that is naturally found in your bones

has been researched and found in

four landmark studies to actually

reverse bone loss when sufficient other

nutrients are present. One study of 1,649

postmenopausal women with osteoporosis

who had had at least one fracture were

divided into two groups. Both groups

took vitamin D and calcium supplements.

One group were also given 680mg/day

of strontium. After the three year study

the strontium group showed an unheard

of average bone growth of 8.1%. This

study shows that osteoporosis can not

only be halted but may even be reversed

and without the side effects of common

osteoporosis drugs.

GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC SETS NEW STANDARDS IN FISH OIL!

Omega-3 fish oil normally contains the vital Omega-3 fatty acids in a triglyceride form. Fish however naturally

HOME & HEATING

Choosing the right heat

pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,

most homes include at least one heat pump,

if not a whole heating solution. They can

provide cheap, clean heat and are much more

convenient than a log burner as you just need

to press a button. But how do you decide

what is best? Choosing the right sized heat

pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort

levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore

important to get professional advice from heat

pump experts.

The range varies from wall mounted high

walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,

ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted

central heating systems allowing you to have a

very discreet way of heating your whole home

to a constant temperature throughout.

Firstly, you must select a heat pump that

is suitable for the size of the space you wish

to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to

ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area

taken into consideration but also, insulation,

building orientation, windows and ceiling

space. There are a wide range of heat pumps

available with different heating outputs so it

is important to select the correct size for your

requirements that will handle the job but not

be unnecessarily overpowered.

Secondly, the location of your heat pump

is also extremely important. The cheapest

installation is a back to back where the outdoor

unit is positioned directly behind the indoor

unit however this is not necessarily always

the best option. It is vital that the indoor

unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is

the location of the outdoor unit. Most people

do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly

in their outdoor entertaining area or right

outside their bedroom window.

Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands

have come and gone over the years but there

are a number of manufacturers who provide

reputable and reliable products. All brands

vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of

systems and price, so it depends on your

application as to which will be most suitable.

Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu,

Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are

all reliable brands backed up by good technical

after sales service.

Ensure your heat pump is installed by an

accredited installer. This will not only ensure

correct installation of your heat pump, but

also validate the manufacturers warranty.

Other things to consider when choosing a

heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the

remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi

capabilities.

Heating is a major investment in your home

and it is vital to get the right advice.

Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,

installation and servicing of all major brands

of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers

ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as

to which system will suit your application

the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no

obligation quote and will come to your home

to see what is required. Visit our website at

The facts about

home ventilation

Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure

Under the New Zealand Building Code,

all buildings, including residential, need to

be suitably ventilated, either with opening

windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1

states: “The objective of this provision is

to safeguard people from illness or loss of

amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are

many benefits to forced, or mechanical,

ventilation over opening windows, including

warmth, security, reduction of outside noises

and reduction of condensation.

Traditional domestic ventilation systems

are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from

outside via the roof space and force the stale air

out through gaps around windows and doors.

The incoming air from these

systems has to be heated or

cooled to keep the house warm

in winter or cool in summer.

The Smooth-Air HEX390 is

a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It

extracts air from the house and

at the same time brings in fresh

air. These two streams of air

pass through a heat exchanger,

which warms incoming air in

winter and cools in summer if

air conditioning is being used.

This means that up to 80% of

the energy which would be

Remove

cooking smells

and steam!

Remote

extraction fans

wasted using a traditional positive pressure

system is recovered, resulting in significant

energy savings and therefore lower heating or

cooling costs.

Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation

systems have been considerably more

expensive than traditional positive pressure

systems. However, with Smooth-Air’s unique

manufacturing capabilities, a HEX390

balanced pressure system can be installed for

a similar price as a traditional positive pressure

system.

Experience expert

dental care

Six fabulous years and still going strong!

The team of Fendalton Dental Surgery

takes this opportunity to thank their

loyal patients, the supportive Canterbury

dental fraternity and the wonderful local

community. They celebrate yet another

glorious anniversary after being forced

to relocate to this premises after the

earthquakes in 2011. It used to be called

Cambridge Dental Surgery while they

were in the CBD but since moving to this

lovely Fendalton suburb in July 2011.

Fendalton Dental Surgery, on the

high profile corner of Idris & Glandovey

Roads has been looking after the dental

needs of the local community as well

as the wider Christchurch area since

2011. Dentists Keith Chiang and Zohnia

McNeill and Oral Health Therapist, Amy

Lee offer a complete range of dental

and oral care services, all in a very calm

and relaxed environment. Supporting

them are dental nurses Simone and Jola

and the ever-efficient highly organised

practice manager, Aysha who bring with

them their very own style and range of

competencies in each and every aspect.

“We listen carefully to what our patients

tell us so we can address each of their

dental problems and help them achieve

good oral health,” says Keith.

A major component of Keith’s work

is under IV sedation, which is available

for people that are very nervous about

visiting the dentist. He has performed

more than 2000 Intravenous sedation

procedures and the clinic is equipped

with the latest advanced equipment for

sedation monitoring. He has a special

interest in Oral Surgery, Impacted

wisdom teeth, surgical extractions,

Placement of Implants and Intra venous

sedation.

For people with damaged or missing

teeth, Zohnia will discuss with them the

options of having crowns, permanent

implants or dentures fitted, all of which

have the added advantage of helping

clients regain their functional bite as

well as improve their smile and overall

confidence. She has a special interest in

Cosmetic dentistry, Root Canals and

Geriatric dentistry. Her calm approach

and special individual attention to detail

has helped deal with most common dental

issues in her patients.

Amy Lee, our Oral Therapist and

Hygienist specialises in the overall

maintenance of healthy teeth and gums.

She educates her patients on how to look

The team at Fendalton Dental Surgery

after their oral health, which if not taken

care of can have detrimental effects on

their overall health. The gum disease,

Gingivitis is one of the main reasons

why people lose their teeth and can be

a social stigma with bad breath, while

research also indicates that gum disease

or otherwise called Gingivitis in pregnant

women can mean a higher chance of

premature birth and low birth weight.

Dry mouth or reduced salivary flow,

which is caused by certain medications

that people take can also lead to gum

problems and tooth decay. By visiting the

hygienist regularly, gum problems can be

prevented, and consequently tooth decay

as well as more serious health issues can

be avoided.

Fendalton Dental Surgery will soon add

to its suite of advanced dental equipment

with a state-of-the-art 3D CT scanner,

which will be used to scan jaws, enabling

the dentists to give a better diagnosis of

clients’ dental problems.

The Fendalton Dental Team invites

you and new patients to visit their

practice and experience Expert Care as

being one of their valued patients. Easily

accessible, highly visible and with plenty

of on-site parking, Fendalton Dental

Surgery, on the corner of Glandovey and

Idris road, is open Monday to Friday

8.30am-5pm. Phone 351 1188 for an

appointment, or simply call in.
