Somerfield
residents
lose fight
to stop
multi-unit
complex
• By Bridget Rutherford
A TWO storey multi-unit
development has got the go ahead
in a tree-lined Somerfield street,
in spite of fierce opposition from
residents.
Multay Developments plans to
build four two-storey units at 23
Studholme St.
Residents rallied to fight the
development earlier this year
because they said it would take
away the street’s family-orientated
appeal, privacy and the
neighbours’ sun.
But because of district planning
rules, the development has
now got the green light.
Originally, Multay Development’s
application featured three
aspects not compliant with the
District Plan. A hearing earlier
this year decided consultation
with some neighbours would be
needed as part of the resource
consent process.
But city council head of
resource consents John Higgins
said Multay Developments had
since amended its plans to fully
comply with the District Plan.
IT SEEMS situations like on
page 1 are becoming more and
more common.
Residents in Somerfield have
been lobbying against an apartment
complex, which they say
will take away privacy and sun.
But it got the green light from
the city council because the
District Plan says it’s okay.
In some good news, the Port
Hills will be well represented in
the country’s 52nd Parliament.
Labour’s Ruth Dyson, National’s
Nuk Korako and the Green
Party’s Eugenie Sage will all get
another term in Wellington.
Although a special congratulations
must go to Ms Dyson for
securing her hold on the electorate.
She is now one of the longest
serving MPs in Parliament, so
she must be doing something
right.
Sitting MPs still hold power
• By Sarla Donovan
ALL THREE of the sitting MPs
in the Port Hills electorate have
made it back into Parliament.
Ruth Dyson increased her 2014
election night majority to retain
her electorate seat for a fourth
term.
She has now been in Parliament
for 24 years, making her
one of the longest-serving current
MPs.
The 2017 campaign had been
the most exciting she’d been
involved in, she said.
“The level of interest, especially
from young people, has just been
great. I like it when people are
passionate about their community
and their country, wanting
to improve things, and we’ve had
all of that during this campaign.”
Labour was about 800 votes
behind National in the Port Hills
electorate party vote, which was
a “huge lift” on 2014’s result.
Green MP Eugenie Sage, who
is third on the list and also the
party whip, returns to Parliament
after the Greens attracted
5.9 per cent of the party vote.
Ms Sage was with party faithful
at the Lyttelton Arts Factory
on Saturday night.
“We were optimistic we would
get returned to Parliament,
though it is bittersweet in terms
of seeing caucus colleagues like
Denise Roche, Barry Coates and
Mojo Mathers no longer with us;
we’ve got a substantially reduced
team,” Ms Sage said.
RETURNING:
Labour’s Ruth
Dyson (far left),
the Green Party’s
Eugenie Sage
and National’s
Nuk Korako have
all made it back
into Parliament
to represent
the Port Hills
electorate.
“But we’ve been this size before
and championed a lot of issues
and we’re looking now to see
if we can get a coalition and
change the Government.”
It was “too soon” to speculate
on whether she would put her
hand up for the co-leader position
vacated by Metiria Turei.
Ms Sage plans to continue
championing clean waterways
and rivers and working out ways
to deal with the effects of climate
change.
Meanwhile, Port Hills residents
will continue to see Nuk
Korako’s mobile office parked
around the electorate, after he
was returned at No 42 on the
party list.
National gained 46 per cent
of the party vote on Saturday
night, although this may change
slightly by the time special votes
are counted on October 7.
Mr Korako attended a National
Party function at Chateau
on the Park on Saturday evening.
He said the strength of National’s
party vote in Christchurch
wasn’t a surprise.
“I thought it would be more,
on the basis of our record, particularly
in Christchurch.”
While he was saddened to see
the demise of the Maori Party,
there was now an opportunity
to build National’s engagement
with Maori through Kahurangi
Blue, a National Party group
focused on Maori policy issues,
said Mr Korako.
Paintball
attack in
Cashmere
• By Sophie Cornish and Andrew
King
PEDESTRIANS, vehicles
and property were the target
of paintball gun attacks last
week and over the weekend in
Cashmere.
Police are looking for a Blue
Ford Ranger, possibly an early
2000s model with a canopy
on the back, in connection
with a number of incidents in
Cashmere and New Brighton,
where paintball guns were
discharged.
The attacks began on
Wednesday last week. Sergeant
Jim Currie said it was a very
serious matter and they needed
to catch who was responsible
before someone was badly hurt.
“They just don’t realise the
damage they can do or injuries
they can cause. It is classed
as a firearm, so a very serious
offence,” he said.
Pedestrians, vehicles and
properties were fired on in
Cashmere at the weekend,
Sergeant Currie said.
The New Brighton drive-by
shootings on Lonsdale St, Keyes
Rd and Marine Pde saw green
and yellow pellets fired at cars,
fences and homes.
Lonsdale St resident Samuel
Kent heard a loud bang and
discovered a window had been
smashed from a paintball gun
pellet.
Paint was splattered on his
curtains and windowsill.
Mr Kent said several
properties were hit along his
side of the street on Wednesday
night.
The New Brighton Club was
also hit six times on the same
night. Its windows required
professional cleaning.
Anyone with information
about the paintball attacks
should phone police on 363 7400
GETTING OUT on the streets
is an inspiring way to find out
about people’s lives, says folk
singer Adam McGrath.
The frontman of local band
The Eastern has been spending
time with his guitar and laptop
at different sites around the city
for a project he’s calling The Sit.
McGrath received funding
from the city council’s Enliven
Places Projects Fund for his plan
to gather stories from everyday
people he meets.
Making coffee and tea on a
gas cooker and serving dried
fruit and a few other snacks,
McGrath has been in Woolston,
the central city and Linwood. He
will now head to New Brighton.
And after spending a week at
each of the four locations around
the city, he plans to record the
songs he’s written on location.
In the summer, he and The
Eastern will perform free
concerts at three of the four sites
– opposite the Peterborough St
Library, in New Brighton, and in
Linwood.
“It’s been really inspirational,
not just musically but also as a
person, just talking to people
and feeling the commonalities.
So many people and so many
different walks of life but these
common things keep repeating
themselves,” he said.
There have been some
memorable moments, such as
when a seven-year-old taught
him a song she’d learnt at school.
A few weeks into the project
he’s already written several
songs. “There’s been a lot of
people talking about loss and
in that moment of loss finding
something within themselves
that carries them through, and
balances out the loss. That’s
been really nice and really cool,
because I’m troubled, as we all
from it’s base in South New
Brighton Park.
Members are currently
working out of five shipping
containers.
To re-build the new clubrooms,
$1 million is needed.
Once completed, club commodore
Alastair Burgess said the
are, and hearing that takes the
edge off.
City council transitional
projects adviser Brindi Joy said
the fund is about contributing
grant funding to people and
groups who are supporting the
city’s regeneration in a positive
clubrooms will be an iconic part
of the eastern suburbs with a big
really original one that combines
telling the stories of people who
might not otherwise feel like
they have a voice, and bringing
Studholme St residents fail
to stop two-storey units
•From page 1
Because of that, it no longer
required resource consent, so
consultation was not needed.
It has gained building consent.
Studholme St resident Marty
Flanagan said they still wanted
to fight the development, but it
would have to
go through the
courts and that
could be costly.
The site used
to be home to a
three-bedroom
Marty
Flanagan
bungalow.
But following
the earthquakes,
the zoning on that
side of the street was changed
to residential suburban density
transition as part of the new
District Plan.
The zone allows for higher
density development.
“All of these got snuck through
the District Plan change just after
the earthquakes and it wasn’t
really communicated clearly
enough,” Mr Flanagan said.
He said the District Plan gave
all the “power” to the developers.
“It’s going to turn Somerfield
into a Riccarton or a Sydenham,”
he said.
NO WAY: Somerfield residents have been opposed to the
development on Studholme St since they found out about it.
“If we wanted to live 10ft from
our neighbours, we would have
bought somewhere like that.”
A spokeswoman for Multay
Developments director Warren
Taylor said he did not want to
comment.
The situation is similar to one
on Spreydon’s Bolton Ave, where
five two-storey townhouses are
being built just metres away from
Kim Mehlhopt’s home of 15
years, without consultation.
She said it will devalue her
home and cost her privacy and
quality of life.
City councillor Phil Clearwater
said both situations were
“unacceptable” and he wanted a
change in legislation allowing the
District Plan to be altered.
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board chairwoman Karolin
Potter said both situations were
terrible.
“You can’t call them houses,
they’re just future dumps. Huge,
blocky, ugly and horrible,” she
said. “It’s bloody hard when the
District Plan allows it to happen.”
US opportunity for scholar
• By Julia Evans
FROM ACTOR James
Franco to Family Guy
creator Seth MacFarlane,
the Rhode Island School of
Design has produced some
artistic greats.
And one day
Aidanfield resident Amy
Huang, will be on the list
of alumni.
The 19-year-old has
flown to the United States
to take up a place in the
fine arts programme,
based in Providence.
Ms Huang will be able
to cross-register her classes
against the same offered
at the Ivy League Brown
University.
And the Rhode Island
school wasn’t her only option
in the states.
Ms Huang was also accepted
into Pittsburgh’s
Carnegie Mellon University,
which Andy Warhol
attended, and she made the
waiting list for Harvard
University.
“The Rhode Island
School of Design is well
known and respected for
its arts faculty, in fact it is
probably the most prestigious
university in that area
SUCCESS: Amy Huang was the dux at Rangi Ruru in
2016.
of study, so I am thrilled,”
she said.
But Ms Huang is fully
aware it’s not going to
be an easy ride – she’s
ready to work hard at
something she is passionate
about.
“I look at this as an investment
into my future,”
she said.
Ms Huang was the
dux of Rangi Ruru Girl’s
School in 2016.
She plans on studying in
the US for four or five years
before she graduates with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Clare reilly - DanCe of life
In Clare Reilly’s new exhibition, ‘Dance of Life’ she expresses the resilience and tenacity to keep finding
joy and beauty in the natural surroundings. Especially in the hard times, when confronted by the big
challenges in life, that we must all pass through at some stage.
There are events, such as the death of a loved one, that can turn our lives upside down. Finding strength
in nature can help us to stay connected and grounded and bring a sense of being part of the dance of life.
These paintings are meditations on the quiet moments, where we can
step away from everyday stress and become fully present and find a
sense of peace.
They are an invitation to breathe in the moment and dance with life.
TEAM EFFORT: Students from Linwood College and pupils from St Anne’s Catholic School
planted 1000 trees in Charlesworth Reserve last week.
STEPPING UP to enhance
their community, pupils from
St Anne’s Catholic School in
Woolston and year 7 and 8
students from Linwood College
came together to plant almost
1000 natives at Charlesworth
Reserve last week.
Both schools are recipients
of the Kiwi Can values and life
skills programme, delivered by
the Graeme Dingle Foundation.
A requirement of the programme
is that each year the
students undertake a project for
their wider community.
This year the schools elected to
come together and work together
at the Charlesworth Reserve,
a 20ha area of land between
Linwood Ave and Humphries
Drive.
Restoration of the area as a
wetland began in 1991. Since
then over 100,000 trees, shrubs
and marsh plants have been
planted at this site. This is an
important habitat for native
wetland birds.
Students demonstrated what
they have learned about respect
for their community and respect
for their environment while also
role-modelling how to be leaders.
Team effort plants 1000 trees
“It’s really exciting to see the
students working on a project
like this,” said Kiwi Can leader
Nicky Cameron. “We teach the
theory and now we support them
to get out and do it in the real
world.”
Ross Smith, Kiwi Can leader
at Linwood College said the students
had been very responsive
to the project.
“They know they are making
a genuine contribution to their
own community and are now
able to monitor the success of
their contribution. This type
of initiative really helps our
students to develop community
pride along with self-esteem,” he
said.
Lyttelton ‘seagull’
leaves union legacy
Raymond Fergus
• By Sarla Donovan
ONE OF the last remaining men
involved in the 1951 waterfront
dispute, Raymond (Ray) Fergus,
passed away in Ashburton on
September 12, aged 90.
Mr Fergus worked
as a casual labourer or
‘seagull’ on the Lyttelton
docks, and later
became a ‘walking
delegate’ who liaised
with the port company
on health and safety
matters.
He was 24 years of
age when, on February
15, 1951, the unionised
wharfies were locked
out after resolving
to work only their contracted
hours.
The lockout continued for 151
days. Arguing that New Zealand’s
export trade was under
threat, the National Government
declared a state of emergency.
Troops were sent onto the
Auckland and Wellington
wharves to load and unload
ships and draconian emergency
regulations imposed rigid censorship,
gave police sweeping
powers of search and arrest and
made it an offence for citizens to
assist strikers – even giving food
to their children was outlawed.
Mr Fergus was interviewed
for a 2002 documentary on the
lockout called 1951, along with
wharfie Baden Norris.
Mr Norris, 90, of Sumner,
started in the union with Mr
Fergus, where they were both
rank and file members during
the strike.
“We all had various roles (such
as) going and digging potatoes
and onions from farmers that
were friendly to us. He was a
good guy, a worker. He could
have moved up the ladder but
he chose to stay within the
union movement. He was a good
workmate, and that’s the best
accolade you could have.”
Mr Fergus went on to become
national president of the Waterfront
Workers Union from 1969-
79 as well as a Lyttelton branch
secretary and president.
He was president of the Lyttelton
Waterfront Workers
Union during 1979 and 1980,
and served on the executive for
many years.
Maritime Union Lyttelton
branch secretary
Gary Horan said he
was a workmate to
hundreds of watersiders
during his career
on the wharf.
“A lot of the conditions
that present
members enjoy are because
of the hard work
and battles Ray and
members like him fought for
over the years,” said Mr Horan.
“I remember as a young
watersider listening to Ray
make many speeches at the
stop work meetings held at the
old centennial hall. He was an
eloquent speaker and had a vast
knowledge of the politics and
legislation ruling our industrial
relations at the time.”
Mr Fergus was married for
more than 60 years to June,
who he first spied at the age of
15 while at cricket practice in
Waltham Park.
The pair tied the knot at St
Saviour’s Church, Sydenham in
1953 and went on to have two
children, Robyn and Mark and
two grandchildren, Francis and
Heather.
Said Heather in the eulogy
given at her grandfather’s funeral
on September 18:
“Granddad tread with purpose
the path that unfurled itself
for him. He was whole of heart;
wholehearted in his work, his
life and his love.”
She told Bay Harbour News
she was an “incredibly proud
granddaughter of a man who
stood up for true equity, and
fought injustice howsoever
small, and wherever found. Nor
was he quelled by the magnitude
of an aggressor, but sought harmonious
resolution, always.”
WELLBEING
FEAST DAY
Message from the Catholic Diocese
of Christchurch
Our Diocese is proud of Marian College. The school is
thriving at its inner-city campus location alongside the
Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Barbadoes Street.
Marian College shows us clearly that the heart of a
Catholic school lies not in its buildings, but in a strong,
supportive community built around faith.
Marian College belongs to the Catholic Kāhui Ako
Community of Learning, one of our 13 schools in
Christchurch. Each school has an affiliated parish and
networks contributing to the Diocese.
Alongside our Diocese earthquake rebuild and repair
programme, our parishes have been offered the chance to
focus on spiritual renewal as we wait for a new Bishop
to be appointed.
The process for the rebuild of Marian College’s campus
will be a priority for our new Bishop, who will ultimately
make the decision on Marian College’s permanent site.
This decision will not be made in isolation however,
there are many factors to consider and groups to consult
with, given the changes in our communities since
the earthquakes.
The Diocese looks forward to keeping the community
updated on progress. In the meantime, Marian College
continues to achieve excellent results and to thrive.
A special thank you goes to the Marian College
community – students, parents, staff and leadership, for
your ongoing patience, support and cooperation.
Fr Rick Loughnan
Catholic Diocese of Christchurch Administrator
The Marian College Principal
Marian College is very fortunate to have a small, friendly,
family atmosphere which comes from teachers and
students knowing each other well.
I am delighted to share that our students and teachers are
making the very best of our current site – opportunities
for collaboration are plenty and the benefits that come of
an inner-city location are taken up with enthusiasm.
At Marian College our special Catholic character is
built into everything we do. Our earthquake recovery
journey has taught us, that while brand new buildings and
facilities are an exciting proposition, it is our faith, our
community and our people that matter. I am excited about
the future of Marian College – we can all look forward to a
bright, sparkling new start. I hope you enjoy reading about
some of our recent happenings.
Mary-Lou Davidson,
Marian College Principal
Feast Day Festivities
One of the most anticipated events on the Marian
College calendar is Feast Day – recognised every year to
celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This year, Feast Day
began with a whole school Mass, which included the
blessing of the new music department, featuring practice
spaces and a multipurpose room.
Traditional Feast Day activities involve Marian College’s
house groups coming together in Xavier Hall to compete
in a talent quest and house group chant competition.
Rivalry between the four Marian College houses –
Brodie, Deans, Seymour and Takahe – is strong and
overwhelmingly positive. Students have been known to
rehearse their chants and performances for up to six weeks
in advance, polishing their acts ready for competition.
Each performance is judged and awarded house points
which are tallied throughout the year. The house with
the most points earned – for academic, sporting, cultural,
service and cultural achievements – is awarded the annual
Inter-House Shield at the end of year school prize giving.
Aiming for France
Football talent Rebecca Lake (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Irakehu)
could be heading to France next year to represent New
Zealand and play in the 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup.
The Year 13 Marian college student helped captain
the New Zealand U19 Football team to victory in the
Oceania Football Confederation championships in
Auckland recently, securing the team’s spot in France,
2018. Rebecca captained the team twice over the five
game campaign which saw the team win all their games
convincingly. Rebecca is a member of the Football Ferns
development squad and has played with Mainland Pride
(the National Women’s regional team) for three years.
RIA KNEY
Judo medallist
Congratulations to Ria Kney (Ngāti Kahungunu) who
won a gold medal in the U52kg girls category at the New
Zealand Secondary Schools Judo Tournament last term.
She won all five of her fights in the one day tournament
held at Lincoln High School. Ria also won gold in two
categories at the Auckland International Judo Open
tournament held three weeks later at ASB Stadium in
Auckland. One of her fights lasted just ten seconds!
Wellbeing and service
A priority for Marian College this year has been student
and staff wellbeing. This year, Marian has introduced two
new courses: Kia Maia and Mana Wahine. Kia Maia is a
course for Year 9 students which focuses on wellbeing,
character strengths, use of money, cyber safety and
developing study and life skills.
The Mana Wahine course aims to promote strong Marian
women. Especially for year 12 students, the course
teaches wellbeing, study techniques, life skills, careers,
financial literacy and service.
Marian College has a strong commitment to providing
service to the community. Not only students, but staff
members are also actively involved.
Marian College staff members rolled up their sleeves
recently, to spend an afternoon participating in a range of
service activities including assisting at Christchurch City
Mission and St Vincent de Paul, cleaning up a beach,
gardening for the Beatitude sisters, making goods for
Christchurch Hospital’s neo-natal unit and other
children in need.
Southern Jam
Marian College’s Jazz Band travelled to the Southern
Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim recently – taking part
in the showcase and celebration of the South Island’s
secondary school jazz bands. Marian College’s Jazz Band
performed at eight public venues and took home a bronze
award. Band director Frances Daly is a Marian old girl
currently studying at Ara Jazz School. Frances inspired
the Jazz Band to compose an original song ‘Dirty
Window’, which won Best Original Song at this year’s
Christchurch Jazz Festival.
international trends
reflected in centre’s food outlets
The Hub Hornby has undergone significant developments and improvements
over the last four years, with the aim of providing an exciting
and diverse shopping experience for its customers.
One of the key areas that is drawing people into the centre is its fully
revamped food court, centre manager Jason Marsden says.
“Customers are really enjoying the variety and quality of the food
offering in our food court, as well as the more contemporary atmosphere,”
Jason says.
“International trends in food courts are changing what used to be quite
boring places to eat, to becoming much more of an experience for
customers, and that’s what we offer at The Hub,” he says.
“Not only does our food court have a great variety of food, there is
also a range of seating options. For example, we have the round tables
for groups, and the leaners where people can stop for a quick bite and
check their mobiles.”
The acoustic ceiling tiles also enhance the environment by reducing
noise and making it easier for people to have a conversation, Jason says.
With a range of ethnic food, including popular Asian cuisines such as
Indian, Chinese and Japanese, complemented by tasty café-style foods,
there is plenty for customers to choose from in the food court.
But that’s not all. The Hub has several other cafés and food outlets
located amongst the retail businesses, and here again the environment
and food quality has gone up several notches, Jason says.
“The cafés have become more restaurant-style, with blackboard menus
being offered as well as the traditional cabinet food, and again this is in
line with international trends.”
The rooftop car park at The Hub has also enhanced the shopping
experience for customers, with easy access in and out.
“Shoppers can drive straight up to the car park then take the lift
directly down to the food court area,” Jason says.
“Parent car parks right next to the entrance also make it easier for
those with children to load their shopping and push chair straight into
their car.”
time to get started
with spring planting
By RACHEL VOGAN
As the days get longer and the soil slowly
begins to warm up and dry out, the time is
right to set about growing your own greens to
feed the troops.
POTATOES
The first sprouted potatoes can go in the
ground now in the warmer climates. If your
soil isn’t ready, grow an early-crop in large
tubs or potato planters. This option will yield
just as well as growing in the ground, and enable
you to tuck the pots up against the house
to protect them from cold snaps. Early-crop
varieties to plant now include ‘Jersey Benne’,
‘Rocket’, Swift’, ‘Cliff Kidney’, or ‘Liseta’. Remember
to enrich the soil with potato food!
PEAS
Peas are a super quick and easy crop to grow,
and have the advantage of being remarkably
hardy to cold temperatures. They prefer a
fertile soil in full sun, and would benefit from
a supporting frame or series of stakes to keep
the crop off the ground.
Sow seed directly in the garden where you
wish it to grow, allowing 10-15cm between
each plant. I put two seeds in each hole.
Cover the area with mesh or netting as birds
just love to peck at fresh pea shoots as they
emerge through the soil.
Once the plants reach 15-20cm, the leaves
don’t seem to have as much appeal, so the
nets can be removed. They are a great crop
for tubs and planters, and dwarf varieties
are wonderful in hanging baskets or window
boxes. Plant plenty, as once they come ready,
you never seem to have enough.
RADISH
Crisp and zingy, everyone has room to grow
these nuggets of goodness. All you need is a
kitchen bucket, some vegetable mix and seeds,
and you’ll be in business. Why not grow them
at work if you have a sunny outdoor space?
It could make for a fun inter-office challenge,
with prizes on offer for the biggest, smallest,
ugliest, tastiest and funniest-shaped radish!
Personally, I prefer the round marble to
golf-ball-sized types, although the cylindrical
varieties do get a lot bigger and therefore give
you more bang for your buck.
Sow from seed now in rows, or try sowing
them in a circle or a pattern – kids love doing
this. Note that you won’t find radishes in
punnets, as they are very difficult to transplant
without damaging the roots, so planting in a
seed line is definitely the best way forward.
ROCKET
Rocket, or arugula, is one of the fastest-growing
and tastiest salad greens around. It is the
epitome of a low-maintenance crop; you can
scatter seed directly onto the ground and walk
away, and will be greeted with seedlings within
a few weeks, and harvestable leaves only a
fortnight to a month later. Plants are widely
available all year round. If the soil dries out in
summer, the plant will bolt and go to seed, so
perk up old, tired soil with sheep manure or
compost before planting in order to avoid this.
It’s an ideal resident for the patio and window
boxes near the kitchen, and if you keep picking
it without allowing it to flower, it will crop for
up to six months or more, as long as the soil
remains fertile and regularly watered.
re-purposed
products
for new & renovated
homes
For Canterbury people, the name Musgroves is synonymous
with recycled and pre-loved building materials and household
items that can happily find a place in their new or renovated
home.
Founded by Dave Musgrove in 1942 as a general cartage
company, it became Musgrove Bros when Dave was joined by
his brother Alf in 1946. The business operated as a cartage and
road contracting company until 1970.
The previous year, when the management was taken over by
Graeme Vickers, the company’s work had extended to include
demolition and the sale of recycled materials. Demolition
continued for a number of years, before Musgroves began to
specialise in buying and selling recycled building materials.
Since those early days, the product mix has evolved, and there
are now many different types of product carried by Musgroves,
general manager Sue Brown says. Volume has expanded significantly
too, with some 70,000 items now on the yard at any
one time, including new and pre-used.
For Musgroves, re-purposing products is at the heart of their
philosophy, Sue says.
“We’re here to help people with their renovations. Many of
our items are materials left over from building jobs, such as
insulation, roofing iron, trellis etc.
“The pre-used items people bring in include items such as
doors, ranchsliders, windows, and kitchen units. And there is a
huge selection for customers to browse through.”
Of course there are the special treasures, too. One Sue is particularly
thrilled with is a series of large oak ceiling panels, each
in four sections, which came from an architecturally designed
home, and lay unused for seven years before they were taken
to Musgroves.
Another unusual item is a large, four-door oak entertainment
cabinet, which Sue says could be an eye-catching feature piece
in someone’s new or renovated home.
People renovating older properties often need to match existing
items that are no longer being manufactured, a problem
that can often be solved at Musgroves. They have Pinex ceiling
tiles, for example, and clay roof tiles, most of which are now
not available on the market.
Those building new homes and wanting to add character to a
contemporary design may choose to install tongue and groove
flooring made from recycled timber, or use old door and cupboard
handles or locks, Sue says.
With new building products continually being developed and
replacing existing ones, the range at Musgroves is constantly
changing and growing. One example, says Sue, is ACM (aluminium
composite) panels, which are waterproof so are ideal
for bathrooms and create a unique effect.
Musgroves is located at 3 Musgrove Close, Wigram. Opening
hours are Monday to Friday 8am-5pm, Saturday 8am-4pm.
community to beneFit
from building extensions
The team hard at work.
There is a lot of hard work going on at the Hei Hei building
known as 126 On the Corner, with the local community set to
benefit.
Formerly named St Aidan’s church, the building was purchased
by the Hei Hei Broomfield Community Development Charitable
Trust three years ago for the community’s use with support
from the Christchurch City Council, and is currently undergoing
extension work.
The extensions will incorporate an office and increased storage,
with earthquake strengthening work being carried out on
the side of the building.
“This is the first of a number of planned improvements to the
building,” community development worker Tracey Buunk says.
“The men from the Southern Institute of Technology are doing
all the building work for us – at an amazing rate. They started a
month ago and we expect to be completed by Christmas. The
floor is down and in a few weeks the framing will be erected
and the roof put on.
“The extension is being generously supported by Council,
the local Community Board, the Lotteries Commission, R.A.
Shearing’s, Mitre 10, Action Scaffolding, Fahey’s Fencing and SIT,”
Tracey says.
“The cost will be greatly reduced by the donations of time,
materials, equipment and funds. Many thanks to everyone for
their contributions.”
Activities 126 On The Corner provides for the community
include a cooking group, a variety group, a walking group, tai
chi, men’s group, tea and tots group, fun fit group, community
lunches and Kix Taekwondo.
First aid courses and church services are also held in the building,
and it is available for hire for private functions.
Two weeks ago, the trust’s sheds were broken into and the Kix
Taekwondo equipment was stolen.
“We are very saddened that this has happened,” Tracey says,
“and we are now looking at how we can replace the $3200
worth of equipment the group needs for when it meets two or
three times a week.”
As an employee of Anglican Care Community Development
and a trustee on the board, Tracey is keen to find out what
other activities the community would like to see being run in
the building.
“We want to know where the gaps are in our community and
the ways we can continue to grow together for the benefit of
local people.
“We have a group of volunteers that make it possible to offer
all that we do and allow us to increase what we offer. Without
their commitment 126 On The Corner would be unable to
make a positive difference in our community.”
Anyone requiring information on the community group activities,
hall hire or volunteering can contact Tracey on 342 5864
or 022 017 6278.
local gym changing
the way fitness is delivered
Culture Fitness in Halswell and Wigram are
aiming to change the way fitness is delivered
so everyone can feel comfortable and get
the results they deserve.
“We are trying to change the perception
of what a gym looks like in our community.
We believe the fitness industry is a service
industry, not just an equipment provider like
most gyms have become,” owner Ricki says.
“Our Personal Trainers believe that support
and motivation should not be an added
extra and they are always happy to help. The
best thing is that Culture Fitness has the
lowest price of any gym in the area.
“Another big difference is that we don’t
have mirrors, we are for real people wanting
to feel better and get fitter, not to stand
around looking at yourself,” Ricki says.
“People spend lots of time in front of the
mirrors at other gyms and it’s uncomfortable
– you should feel comfortable at a gym
not judged.
“Flexibility and convenience are also at the
forefront of our thinking. We have structured
Culture Fitness in such a way that you
should never have to wait for equipment
and still get a great workout no matter what
time you come in.
“One aspect of how we do this is our
Express Fitness Lanes where you can get
in and out knowing you have had a great
workout in just 35 minutes.”
Culture Fitness is also one of the only gyms
in the west to incorporate the My Zone
heart rate monitoring system, Ricki says.
“This ensures you are working at the level
that is right for you according to your personal
fitness level.
“Culture Fitness really is very different, but
you will need to see it for yourself.”

World cup Fever
about to hit hornby
Volunteer tradesmen spent many hours getting
the clubrooms ready for the visitors.
There are exciting times ahead for the Hornby Rugby League
Club. Shortly they will host The Kiwis Rugby League Team for
training sessions ahead of their World Cup match against Scotland
at AMI Stadium on November 4, 2017.
“In April this year we offered to host the Kiwis for their training
sessions,” club president Brent Tomlinson says.
“The Rugby League World Cup organisers, New Zealand Rugby
League, Canterbury Rugby League, our own club and the Christchurch
City Council all got on board.”
A lot of work needed to be done to prepare the club’s facilities
for the visitors, Brent says.
“The council was responsible for preparing the grounds, and the
club’s role was to upgrade the clubrooms. Our changing rooms
needed a complete makeover to bring them up to international
standards.
“The changing rooms have been relined and repainted and the
showers have been completely refurbished. This has involved
hours and hours of work by volunteer tradesmen to get it all
done.
“It was also an expensive project, and funds have come from
fundraising, grants, a number of sponsors and local club supporters,”
Brent says.
“We would like to thank Keith Burgess, Peter Lawrie, Ho
Hogg, Kent Ramsay, Craig Dunn, Mike Dormer, Mark Allison of
Independent Fisheries, Jason Hatton of Hatton Plastering, Dean
Brewster of Brewster Building, Air Rescue and CERT for their
support.”
The project has also required sacrifices from the Hornby Rugby
League members themselves.
“We haven’t been able to play games at our home field all
season, but that’s how committed we are to having the Kiwis at
Hornby. Kiwis’ coach David Kidwell is a Hornby Rugby League
Junior and we are proud that he is bringing the Kiwis to his
home club.”
Work on the clubrooms started in early April, with the finishing
touches being put on the facilities just last week.
expertise built on family heritage
For Christchurch real estate agent Pip Sutton,
real estate is a family heritage spanning
four generations over approximately 93
years.
It all started with her great-grandfather Frederick
in 1924, out of Lyttelton. Her grandfather,
Fred, continued working in Lyttelton,
setting up an office in London Street, which
still stands today.
Pip’s father Dave became a partner in Simes
real estate in Christchurch in the early 1970s
until 2005 when it was sold for retirement
purposes. From the age of just 18 months Pip
became part of it, with many early memories
of attending property auctions, visiting building
sites and regular office visits where the
auction gavel and lectern were often used as
play toys.
“I grew up in the business,” she says. “During
school holidays I worked in Dad’s office. I
spent a lot of time relieving as receptionist,
in accounts and assisting putting marketing
packages and the likes together, oh and lots
of Sunday drives around new developments
within the city and Lyttelton Harbour with
the family.”
On leaving school Pip gained a Bachelor of
Commerce & Management degree with a
marketing major. She gained valuable experience
and skills working as a top sales and
marketer for multi-national market leaders
within New Zealand and the UK.
In 2005, Pip returned to Christchurch to
commence her real estate career under the
guidance and wisdom of her father.
“This involved long hours of intensive learning.
He passed on an in-depth understanding
of Christchurch’s land and development right
through from the early Lyttelton days. This
included understanding district plans, zoning,
the development process. How to research
properties deeply to uncover potentials for
new owners. How to listen to people and
respond to their needs.
“He passed on that little bit of magic, which
had been handed down from three previous
generations of learnings from great depressions,
World Wars and within my career, the
Global Financial Crisis and pre and postearthquake
environments.”
In 2014, Pip joined Ray White Real Estate,
because she liked their in-depth attention
to real estate law and management style
at the Cashmere office, plus being a family
brand itself spanning back to the early1900s,
she recognised the more caring nature of
the brand, perhaps due to over 100 years of
learnings being passed down too.
“you are working with people during a milestone
time in their life, they are often already
under stress. A real estate agent’s job is to
assist in relieving the stress, not adding to it.”
Pip has become a successful and highly
regarded real estate salesperson across
the city. For her, the most enjoyable and
important part of the process is to spend
time with both buyers and sellers, using her
in-depth knowledge of the Canterbury property
environment to assist in achieving the
best possible outcome for her clients.
As she puts it: “My measure of success is the
quality of the results I achieve for my clients,
not the number of houses I sell. I would
rather take more time getting my client into
a better position than collecting listings and
making quick sales.”
These are significant times for the longestablished
Sockburn School in Springs Road,
Hornby. This year the school is celebrating its
60th anniversary, and next year will mark the
first step of a major change.
In January 2018, the school will be given a new
name – Wigram Primary, and this will be in
preparation for the school’s relocation to the
Wigram Primary site on the Runway in January
2019, principal Heather Walkinshaw says.
Detailed design of the new school is currently
underway, with construction to be carried out
by Southbase.
“Southbase has had recent experience with
new school builds, and will bring their expertise
to the build,” Ms Walkinshaw says. “Work
on the new school is expected to start in
January 2018.”
The new site was blessed by representatives
of the local Taumutu Rununga on August 8,
with the ceremony attended by the then Associate
Minister of Education, Tim Macindoe.
The school will also have a new uniform with
a new logo, which is now being embroidered
on to the new uniforms.
The logo, which features two kahu facing each
other with the runway through the middle, has
been designed to represent the history of the
area. Kahu were prevalent in the area and the
runway recalls the history of the air force at
Wigram.
second and third generations,” staff member
Jude Ingram says.
“It will also be the last of these events for us
as the existing Sockburn School. We are holding
a range of events on Friday, November 3.
These include visiting learning spaces, photos,
afternoon tea and a dinner at the Wigram
Base Conference Centre.
“The school has always been well supported
by the community, as one of our parents
said recently: ‘The school has had a lot of
long-serving staff, which is a reflection of the
loyalty to the school. The school has a great
sense of community. Everyone works very well
together. The staff are dedicated to the success
of all students.’”
LOOKING BACK…
The first headmaster of Sockburn Public
School when it was established in1957 was Mr
A. R. Chambers. A photo from the time shows
there were 11 teachers, a clerical assistant and
a nurse.
An aerial view dated January 1957 shows
how little development there was at both the
airbase and in the surrounding area.
The first school committee was formed in
1957 and the iconic school pool, which was
opened in1961, is still used by the students.
The Wigram Airbase families had a long connection
with the school until Wigram Aerodrome
was closed in 1995 following the CFS’
relocation to RNZAF Ohakeatwo years earlier.
At that point Sockburn School roll dropped
by about 80 students. Some school relocatable
buildings were then removed to Hagley High.
Waterloo entrance
momentum continues With
ongoing development at business park
Caffé and Pocket Park
Hornby’s Waterloo Business Park continues to
grow at an impressive rate, bringing increased
business activity to the area. In driving through
the park, there is a palpable sense of activity
and momentum owing to the large number of
sites currently under construction.
“Waterloo reached its tipping point sometime
in the past 12 months,” assistant development
manager Joel Webber says, “where we gained a
critical mass of sales and construction activity
that marked a transition from large, burgeoning
industrial subdivision to an active and
dynamic business environment.
“On the back of this transition, the focus
of the development team at Waterloo has
squarely shifted to completion of the two
remaining stages of development,” Mr Webber
says.
“Titles for the 6.3ha Stage 5 of development
are expected in mid to late October. Earthworks
on the final stage of development, the
7.3ha Stage 6, is well underway with titles
expected to issue in early 2018.
“On the periphery of our own on-site works,
we’re eagerly anticipating the completion
of NZTA’s Pound Road realignment works
towards the end of the year. This will be a key
milestone in the ongoing evolution of Waterloo
Business Park, delivering outstanding
roading network connectivity to our owners
and occupiers.”
The freight and logistics fraternity has identified
and acted upon this opportunity with
several transport-based businesses having
established in close proximity to this future
arterial route. These businesses have futureproofed
themselves over the medium to long
term and are positioned well for growth and
success, Mr Webber says.
There are currently 14 businesses established
and operating within the Business Park with
a further 10 sites under construction. In
recognition of the changing dynamics within
the Business Park, Waterloo recently launched
its inaugural owners and occupiers networking
event.
“We believe that Waterloo can be, and should
be a business micro-community,” Mr Webber
says. “We’ve seen first-hand the internal
business opportunities that take shape when
owners and occupiers at Waterloo Business
Park get in the same room as one another.
We want to encourage and nurture a strong
business community at Waterloo and we see
a regular networking event as a terrific way
to foster and develop understanding of, and
familiarity with, the other businesses on-site
and promote internal business transactions
within the Business Park.”
The philosophy behind the regular networking
events is that each quarter a different business
hosts the event on site. The host business
has the opportunity to give an overview of
what they do and undertake a tour of their
premises before breaking out into informal
networking over drinks and nibbles.
“Our inaugural networking event was hosted
by Hagley Building Products back in June and
was a resounding success. The second event
was held on September 19, and generously
hosted by Cardinal Freight.”
southern motorWay
work on track
Despite an unusually wet winter, work on the $195 million
Christchurch Southern Motorway – Stage 2 (CSM2) project
has not been held up, with more than 300,000 cubic metres of
earth moved, two new local roads built and the first of eight
bridges almost complete.
Principal project manager Geoff Griffiths says people can
expect to see more changes over the coming months as work
ramps up.
Mr Griffiths noted that on Wednesday August 30, two
180-tonne cranes put the final four ‘Super-T Beams’ that make
up the Main South Road Bridge into place.
“The structure, which will take Main South Road traffic up
and over the motorway, is made up of 16 locally made precast
beams, which range from 30 to 35 metres long and weigh up
to 68 tonnes each. It will be the first of the project’s eight
bridges to be finished,” he said.
Along with the Main South Road Bridge, the CSM2 team have
also started constructing the Waterholes Road and Trent
Road bridges and built two new local roads - Tiptree Lane and
Manion Road.
“These new roads will give people access to their homes and
local businesses, and in the case of Manion Road, allow the
CSM2 team to carry on with work to four-lane the motorway
from Weedons Road towards Curraghs Road,” Mr Griffiths
said.
“Meanwhile, at the city end of the project, John Paterson Drive
is being realigned to join with Halswell Junction Road. This
work will continue until the end of the year when the new
alignment is expected to open to traffic.”
Mr Griffiths said people travelling around the Selwyn District,
near the project, should expect detours and road closures at
times as work on the project continues.
“Traffic will be closely monitored to try to reduce disruption
and delays; however, people should plan ahead and allow extra
travel time as work continues on the CSM2.
“We would also like to remind people to obey the traffic
management that is in place while the project is underway.
The speed restrictions and road closures are in place for your
safety as well as the safety of our crews.”
The Christchurch Southern Motorway (Stage One, completed,
and Stage Two, underway) is expected to halve travel time
between Rolleston and Christchurch at peak times from 30
minutes to 15 and reduce fatal and serious crashes by 40 per
cent.
Stage Two is on track to be open to traffic in early 2020.
Why just cuts
The difference between a good
haircut and a bad haircut is three
weeks! Heard that one? yes, it’s
out there but it doesn’t apply to
a Style Cut from Just Cuts at The
Hub Hornby. Why?
Firstly, all their stylists are fully
qualified, with many years’ experience
in the industry. But more
importantly all their cuts are
supported by a seven-day guarantee!
So, if for any reason you are
not 100 per cent happy, go back
within seven days and the issue
will be rectified free of charge.
“We offer this because we are
confident with our services, and
not all salons offer this,” says
Team Leader Michael Turner.
“And then there’s our level of
service. Unsolicited testimonials
not only praise the haircuts, but
the service, attitude of our stylists
and the happy environment
to enjoy your haircut. That could
be why we have over 70 per cent
of clients returning to our salon,
and so many recommending us to
their families and friends.”
One such happy client, Trina, is
pictured here when she won the
August Promotion Gift Basket
(valued at $300) just for buying a
product.
“Created exclusively for Just
Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired?
You may be surprised to find one of New Zealand’s
most highly qualified and experienced
health care experts in Hornby.
At Stay Well Pharmacy on Shands Road, Naturopathic
Pharmacist Mark Webster provides
patients with options over and above standard
medicinal and pharmaceutical care.
“Integrated Medicine is about taking the best
of everything,” Mark says. “By looking at diet,
lifestyle, exercise and daily routines, I can
provide solutions that treat the cause of your
discomfort. Not just the symptoms.”
For Mark, this means continually studying
to keep up with the latest advancements in
healthcare and medicine.
“At the moment, I’m working towards my
Master of Science in Integrated Medicine
through George Washington University in
America. Last year I completed a five year Fellowship
in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine,
having been a qualified pharmacist for 26
years.”
Mark’s approach to Integrated Medicine is
attracting national attention. Having been a
finalist for the past two years, in July Mark
won the 2017 New Zealand Pharmacy Award
for the Best Complementary Healthcare
Campaign and this year he won the Kiwibank
main motivation is seeing his patients find a
new lease on life.
“Everyone is different. What works for one
person may not work for another. By bringing
together advice from a patient’s doctor, dietitian,
physiotherapist, or other health professional,
I want to support people in finding a
healthier way of living that works for them,”
says Mark.
Healthy solutions start with quality choices,
so Mark only stocks products, vitamins and
minerals that are backed by peer-reviewed,
evidence-based research.
On Tuesdays, Mark runs private consultations
at the Pharmacy for you to discuss your health
concerns. From that, he can design you a personalised
wellness plan to help you live well,
and stay well.
Initial appointments are 60 minutes and additional
appointments are typically half an hour.
Mark’s training covers a wide range of conditions,
but he has a special passion for skin
conditions, gastro-intestinal issues, hormonal
complaints or if you are simply sick and tired
of constantly feeling sick or tired. Bookings are
essential.
travel bags
for every destination
As the name suggests, Just Bagz in Dressmart
Hornby is filled with hundreds of bags, with
the main focus being on travel bags of every
description.
This family-run business, owned and operated
by Graham and Julieann Griffiths, specialises
in quality luggage from leading manufacturers
including Samsonite, Eminent and Riccardo,
with 90 per cent of the stock being brought in
by the couple.
Graham has been in the industry for over 40
years, covering manufacturing, wholesaling and
retailing, so with that experience and knowledge
he can advise customers on the right bag
to suit their requirements and budget.
The bag purchased may depend on how many
people will be using it, for example a family,
how they are travelling – whether by road
or air, and how much they want to take with
them, or bring back.
The first choice customers have, is between
hard and soft luggage and this comes down
to personal preference, Graham says. In both
types there is a huge selection of sizes, styles
and fashion colours – with modern luggage
also being much more user-friendly. Ninety
per cent of bags now have four wheels, making
them very easy to manoeuvre and transport.
Just Bagz also has a range of travel accessories
including TSA locks and adaptors, passport
holders and luggage labels.
There is also a wide selection of backpacks
– adult sizes in various styles, and children’s
styles with novelty designs of their favourite
cartoon characters.
Also on display are wallets, shoulder bags and
handbags in both leather and man-made materials,
in a wide range of prices.
So, call in for a browse, and have a chat to
Graham or Julieann about what you are looking
for. They will be very happy to give you
some advice for your travel needs.
residential groWth
set to continue in the west
The residential population of Christchurch’s western suburbs
has grown significantly since the Canterbury earthquakes of
2010 and 2011, and that growth looks set to continue for
some time.
A number of subdivisions have already been developed across
the area in response to that growth, with more coming on
stream over the next few years.
One new one being developed is an extension to the existing
Country Palms subdivision in Halswell, which was established
prior to the earthquakes by development company Suburban
Estates.
“That one was well received and sold quickly,” company manager
Tracey Watson says.
“The new development is smaller, with 100 lots. The first stage,
comprising 33 lots, has just been released, with the remainder
to be released over the next couple of years.”
Section sizes range from 400sqm to 700sqm, with access
through the existing Country Palms development.
“The subdivision has access to good infrastructure, with the
opportunity to have access to Halswell Junction Road, and
there are good facilities all within a kilometre,” Ms Watson
says.
A newcomer to the Christchurch market, Avanda Group, is
developing a site at 197 Halswell Junction Road. Planning and
design work has started and civil engineering work will get
underway once designs are finalised, marketing manager Sarah
Davidson says.
The existing plan for the development includes 197 lots, with
section sizes ranging from 300sqm to 650sqm.
“There is an allowance within the plan for a small number of
integrated housing lots, should the demand for such products
develop over the course of the sales programme,” Ms Davidson
says.
She says Avanda has spent a number of months speaking to
active parties in the market, and listening to what purchasers
want.
“This information has been at the forefront of our decision
making. We are in the process of appointing a local urban
design and landscape architect team to assist in the design of
the layout and the treatment of outdoor spaces to make 197
Halswell Junction Road a welcoming community,” Ms Davidson
says.
“Avanda chose to develop in Halswell as it is a growing and
popular community that we wanted to be part of. There is a
demand for good-sized sections in the area.
“We hope this will be the first of many developments in
Christchurch for Avanda.”
Several other subdivisions in the area have had council consent.
There are 205 lots over three subdivisions in Awatea Rd, Carrs
Rd and Halswell Junction Rd.
A further 634 lots across four sub divisions in Sutherlands Rd,
Halswell Junction Rd, and Milns Rd are currently subject to a
subdivision consent application.
a chance to see,
touch & feel latest building products
The brand-new Design Centre set up last month
by Jennian Homes in Main South Road Hornby
provides a showcase for industry-leading building
products that the public can “see, touch and feel”,
says co-owner Dwayne Prendergast.
“This is a completely different concept,” Dwayne
says. “People can see a lot more in our Design
Centre than they can in a show home.
“The product selection includes state-of-the-art
kitchens, bathrooms, plumbing products, exteriors
claddings and much more, with all the proven
brands represented.”
Jennian Homes sales staff are available on site to
talk to visitors about any of the products, and discuss
how they can be incorporated into a Jennian
Homes design.
“We offer a range of standard plans, but we enjoy
designing bespoke homes for clients to suit their
section and their ideas. As our slogan says, ‘your
personality, our expertise’.”
Dwayne says Jennian Homes is unique in the building
industry in Canterbury, in that the company directors
– himself and project manager Paul Jenkins
– have hands-on involvement with every project.
“We work closely with our clients so they can talk
to us at any time during the design and construction
process.”
Dwayne says there are “great opportunities” for
people to build homes now in Christchurch and
across Canterbury, with plenty of land opportunities.
“Our team are working closely with all developers
to be aware of the available land as it comes to the
market.”
Jennian Homes is opening two more show homes
this year – one in the Faringdon sub-division in
Rolleston, which will open at Labour Weekend, and
the other in Rangiora, which will open just before
Christmas.
A well-established home-building company, Jennian
Homes was launched in New Zealand 35 years
ago, and has been in the Canterbury market for
more than 20 years.
Their new Design Centre is located at 212 Main
South Road, Hornby, and is open seven days a
week from 9am-5pm.
the trickle-doWn
effect
By ROSS KIDDIE
I’m a big motorsport fan, Formula One in
particular.
Even though Ferrari as a team is giving Mercedes-Benz
a run for its money this season,
the latter has dominated the sport in recent
years.
Ultimately, that success trickles down to sales
from the showroom floor. That is certainly
showing here in New Zealand. Mercedes-Benz
is dominating the luxury car market and I
don’t see that changing any time soon, simply
because the raft of models and variants within
each model range means there is a vehicle for
all tastes and budgets.
There is also a large proliferation of sporty
models and the performance arm of Mercedes-Benz
– AMG – has kept up the pace
with high output models sitting in tandem
within the line-up.
I’m not sure how inspired AMG is from Formula
One, but you can rest assured that some
technology from the sport flows down to
street vehicles.
The latest AMG model to come my way was
the C63S cabriolet, which has a twin-turbocharged
4-litre V8 engine delivering monster
power outputs of 375kW and 700Nm of
torque.
Even though these figures are highly impressive,
the cabriolet can easily be driven sedately.
It is at home at city speeds in a similar fashion
to its four and six-cylinder counterparts. There
are driver-selectable engine management protocols
that can be set to many varying requirements.
I even preferred the standard mode,
which like all big V8 engines, means a relaxed,
unstressed operating manner.
However, when sport mode is selected, there
is a constant solid surge of power that seems
endless in its delivery. Acceleration is vivid – a
standstill to 100km/h time of 4.2sec is wickedly
fast, along with a 3.2sec overtaking time
(80km/h to 120km/h).
What I enjoyed most about the C63S’ performance
is the sound that accompanies its delivery.
It is loud and there’s even a button that
enhances more noise; a backfire on gearshift
and throttle blip on downshift is infectious to
listen to.
On that subject, drive is channelled to the
rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic
transmission. It is a direct shift-type and how
it harnesses so much power and torque yet
arranges the gears so smoothly amazes me.
There are steering-wheel-mounted paddles
for the enthusiastic driver, and management
protocols, which quickly identify throttle
percentage.
The C63S cabriolet sits on huge rubber with
wheels an inch smaller in diameter up front
than those on the rear. The sport specification
Michelin Pilot tyres (255/35 x 19in and 285/30
x 20in) have huge grip, yet they are constantly
tested when the power goes on. Thankfully, the
traction control system is as good as any I’ve
experienced before; there’s just a little bit of
freedom within the system so that the driver
Price – Mercedes-Benz C63S cabriolet, $189,900
Dimensions – Length, 4686mm; width, 1810mm; height, 1409mm
Configuration – V8, rear-wheel-drive, 3982cc, 375kW, 700Nm, seven-speed automatic
Performance – 0-100km/h, 4.2sec
Fuel usage – 9.4l/100km
can experience the feel of grip loss at the
rear under hard acceleration, but the squirm
and oversteer is moderated without sudden
intervention.
One of the benefits of quality tyres is the feel
through the steering, the C63S cabriolet has
accurate turn-in along with strong feel – you
can point and clip apexes delightfully. It must
be said, though, the C-Class in this form is so
competent it makes driving easy, the suspension
is informative and that creates an involving
driving experience. It is also rigid within
the body structure.
Like most premium manufacturers, Mercedes-
Benz and AMG haven’t lost sight of the need
to look after the environment, and even
though the engine has big cylinders to feed,
the fuel usage statistics are still realistic.
Mercedes-Benz claims a 9.4-litre per 100km
(30mpg) combined cycle average. At 100km/h I
recorded an 8l/100km (35mpg) instantaneous
readout along with a 11.2l/100km (27mpg)
average over five days.
However, a buyer who chooses C63S specification
in any vehicle will understand that the
quad-camshaft V8 likes to be released and fuel
economy wouldn’t be a priority.
At $189,000 the C-Class cab in this form
comes at a premium price but it is chock full
of goodies and, as you would expect from
Mercedes-Benz, it wants for nothing.
I’ve been quite spoilt recently with a lot of
German product filtering through the press
fleet – as well as soft and hard-tops from
other brands – serving to prove the convertible
market is showing no sign of dwindling.
I’ve long said Christchurch doesn’t have the
best weather for open-air motoring and I stick
to that statement; that being the case, the
coupe would be the car for me, but for anyone
who gets to experience that amazing engine,
there’s a chance they will be simply over-awed.
By ROSS KIDDIE
I’m on one of my favourite high country roads. The stretch
includes short straights mixed with a combination of tight and
open corners.
The car is responding delightfully to the way it is being steered
and I’m being entertained by its handling and balance. I’m
thinking that this could be the best evaluation drive I’ve had for
2017.
No, I’m not driving a sports car or anything exotic. In fact, I’m
in one of New Zealand’s budget models – a Mazda2 to be
exact.
The reason why I’m so smitten is not because the Mazda2 is
fast or exciting, its performance is honest and it works hard
to please through the chassis, but because the series is priced
for affordability and in terms of all-round value for money it’s a
real attention-grabber.
Not only does it drive purposefully at all speeds, you also get a
lot of kit on Mazda2, and for a car that lists under $30k, it is a
rather special purchase.
The test car was in Limited specification and it sits at $29,695;
an entry-level GLX variant comes in at $21,945 while a GSX
comes in at $24,945. I’m picking the GSX would be the car for
me but the Limited variant does get a lot of kit, features which
are included elsewhere in the Mazda line-up.
Such are the changes for 2017, the Mazda2 could certainly be
described as having a facelift. There aren’t a lot of cosmetic
enhancements, but there are new side mirrors, grille and wheel
changes.
The Automotive Lamp Specialists
On the inside the dash panel graphics have been enhanced for
clarity, there’s a new centre console display, while trim materials
have been upgraded.
More importantly, there have been chassis changes to promote
the driving experience and that’s what I noticed during the
time I tackled the exit from the Waimakariri River gorge. The
most significant development is the addition of G-Vectoring
Control, which improves handling and stability especially during
emergency avoidance manoeuvres.
In Limited specification that also combines with a suite of
other collision avoidance technologies such as smart city brake
support and driver attention alert.
Together, these functions provide the Mazda2 driver with
confidence at all speeds. You don’t need to be moving along at
pace; in everyday situations the newcomer feels in control of
itself and has a decisive feel from behind the wheel, which will
lure drivers of all ages.
That is the reason why I like the car’s balance so much. It just
feels right from behind the wheel and you feel so much part of
the car. That’s an aspect Mazda is building into all of its range,
and along with the superb feel of quality that accompanies
it, it’s no surprise that the new Mazda2 appeals,as does the
company’s enture line-up in general. I’ve driven several from
the manufacturer recently, and it’s fair to say the company has
upped the ante in terms of desirability.
Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine,
which drives out of a conventional six-speed automatic
transmission. I mention that because Mazda hasn’t developed
its turbocharging techniques any further and I guess it doesn’t
need to. It claims 81kW and 141Nm from the engine, and with
a 4.9l/100km (57mpg) combined cycle fuel usage claim the
figures are healthy.
There is also a sport mode the driver can activate for busier
engine behaviour, and if you couple that to a manual sequential
gearshift function, the sporty feel of Mazda2 will come into its
own.
I left the evaluation car mostly in normal mode and enjoyed
the interaction between engine and gearbox. It is a traditional
way of driving and for that reason I warmed to it, changes are
crisp and smooth and the engine stays on song. Even though
the area of maximum torque is high at 4000rpm, the Mazda2 is
light and it doesn’t take a lot of energy to move it quickly (0-
100km/h in 9.5sec) – the engine is unstrained and responsive.
The Limited rides on 185/60 x 16in Dunlop tyres, and even
though their footprint isn’t wide they have a solid tenure with
the road surface and provide the driver with strong feedback
as to how they are reacting under pressure.
The Mazda2 has reasonable freedom of movement within the
suspension, the spring and damper rates favour the uneven
surface of Christchurch’s roads, while occupant comfort has
been an engineering priority.
Christchurch is a tough market for Mazda2. There’s some fairly
hefty competition here from Suzuki and its clever marketing
campaign. However, Mazda also has a free servicing programme,
which is most tempting – three years or 100,000km.
All factors considered, the Mazda2 is a compelling buying
proposition.
early bookings provide best deals -
travel team says
Next year is open and now is the time to start planning your
2018 holiday, says Hornby House of Travel’s Paula Waldeck.
“Families planning overseas holidays in 2018 are encouraged to
book early to get the best deals,” Paula says.
“The school holidays are the busiest and most expensive time
to travel, so by booking early people can reduce the cost.”
Paula and her expert team at HOT have plenty of suggestions
for customers looking for an overseas holiday that won’t break
the bank.
“For example, the Gold Coast is great value for money,” Paula
says, “and anywhere in the South Pacific is also a good choice
for warmth during the New Zealand winter, plus there is usually
no time difference so that makes it easier with younger
children.”
For families with teenagers, she suggests a trip to Vietnam and
Cambodia, where they can learn about different cultures and
the different ways of life in that region.
For those who are excited by the idea of river or ocean cruising
and calling into exotic places, HOT suggests one of the
many multi-destination cruises on offer.
“There are ships for all budgets and so many itineraries to
choose from around the world,” Paula says.
Europe is always one of the most popular destinations for Kiwi
travellers, with Croatia currently at the top of the list. Paula
suggests island hopping on a small cruise ship around the Adriatic
Sea with a stay in the ever-popular Dubrovnik.
Italy is another highly favoured country to visit, and there is a
range of itinerary ideas for travellers going there, including villa
stays, cycling and walking tours, foodie tours or a Vespa tour
around quaint Italian villages.
For first-time travellers, the team at HOT Hornby suggests a
multi-country guided journey.
“Travellers get to enjoy local experiences, and they have a
good balance of time with the group and time to do things on
their own. This is a great way to get a taste of Europe,” Paula
says.
Canada is also a popular choice with HOT customers, with a
train trip across the Rocky Mountains providing a way to enjoy
the beautiful scenery in comfort. The trip is available from April
until October.
“There is also the opportunity to combine this with an Alaskan
cruise, making for an even more exciting holiday,” Paula says.
She and her team look forward to helping customers plan
their 2018 holiday, so call in to their store at 40 Carmen Road,
or book an appointment by phoning 344-3070.
The Salvation Army Family Stores throughout the country are well
known as places to find quality second-hand items of all kinds, from
clothing and books, to toys, furniture and crockery.
Generous people in the community donate the items,
with the organistaion using the proceeds from the sales
to fund their wide range of charitable activities.
There are two Salvation Army stores in the Addington
area, one in Lincoln Road and the other in Poulson
Street, with the proceeds from the Poulson St outlet
being used to run their long-established hostel, which
caters for males struggling with life.
“The hostel accommodates males from the age of 18
or 19 upwards,” Salvation Army spokesperson Natasha
Campbell says.
“They come from all walks of life, and having time
there allows them to reintegrate back into society.
Their accommodation is fully equipped and they get
three square meals a day.”
The hostel is completely full at present, with residents
allowed to stay for a maximum of three months.
The Poulson St store sells furniture, bedding and
children’s toys, which people can drop off at the store.
“We are always in need of good-quality mattresses,
sheets and blankets,” Natasha says.
Donated sheets and towels are also used to supply
the hostel and we are especially in need of towels, she
says.
Many of the items sold at the Lincoln Rd store are
newer and include clothing, nick nacks, collectibles
and a wide range of household items.
The stores are located at 62 Poulson St and 300
to our Community.
Earlier in the year,
I wrote about the
principle of collaboration and its importance
to our students as they prepare for the global
world in which they will live their lives. This is
because the global world requires effective
interaction with others. IQ alone is not enough.
Our Emotional Intelligence (EI) – also matters.
I also discussed that we now know through
neuro-science that IQ-smartness is not fixed
but can grow. Effort makes us stronger. In
schools this is sometimes called ‘growth
mindsets’. For more information on this please
see https://www.mindsetworks.com/science/
I raise these points again at the end of Term 3
as our focus even more tightly centres on
our senior students’ success in their Yr 11-13
Career Pathway and for the juniors, their Year
7-10 Learning Pathway.
Meet the Mayor
Nineteen Linwood College students attended
the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver
Award Ceremony with the Honourable Lianne
Dalziel, Christchurch’s Mayor. This prestigious
event was held at the Mayoral Office.
At Linwood College we want our students
to have both the necessary NCEA success
in knowledge and content-skills, and also
leadership and employability expertise. IQ and
EQ – the whole person. This is reinforced by the
following seven qualities that NZ employers
are essential for career development:
1. Positive attitude
2. Communication
3. Teamwork
4. Self-management
5. Willingness to learn
6. Thinking skills
(problem solving and decision making)
7. Resilience
The message is that academic and social
learning support one another in personalised
pathways, career development and lifesuccess.
This message is at the heart of
Linwood College of 2017 and beyond.
Finally, schools can be complicated places.
If for any reason you would like to talk to me
about anything, please contact the office so we
can arrange this. My door is open.
Ngamihinui – best wishes,
Richard Edmundson - Tumuaki (Principal)
We congratulate these students on their
efforts and again thank Chris Allan from the
Joshua Foundation for his mentorship and
tremendous commitment to Christchurch
youth.
The Year 11 production, ‘Harbouring Ghosts’ was a
fantastic, eerie performance. Through this, students
explored the healing of past mistakes.
It was then the Year 12/13 classes' turn to take the stage.
They tackled an adaption of Hamlet, ‘Ophelia Thinks
Harder’. This was an extremely challenging performance
which students handled with finesse.
Stars in the Making
In 2016, twelve Linwood College students
acted as extras in ‘The Changeover’, a movie
filmed and set in Christchurch’s Eastern
suburbs.
Prom Night 2017
For many Seniors the 2017 ‘American Prom’
was the highlight of the year’s social calendar.
Magic was in the air and everyone was dressed
to the nines - dancing the night away with
flashing tambourines and Mickey Mouse ears.
It was truly a special occasion, full of smiles,
Based on a novel by Margaret Mahy and
starring Timothy Spall and Lucy Lawless, this
comes out in theatres on September 28.
Get down and support our local talent.
friendship and laughter and one which our
students will never forget.
Staff working at Twiggers said that it was
a pleasure to be part of such an enjoyable
occasion. They were extremely complimentary
towards our students’ positive demeanor.
The Wonders of Science
Ninety English Language Learning
GREAT food
BROUGHT TO YOU BY...
Your fresh food people
SPRING ONION PANCAKES
Ingredients
250g Plain flour, plus extra for
dusting
80 ml Boiling water
70 ml Cold water
2 Tbsp Vegetable oil
1 bunch Spring onion, finely
chopped
1 tsp Sesame seeds
Directions
Put the flour in a bowl and
add the boiling water, stirring
with chopsticks. This is called
‘burning’ the flour. Give it a mix
and once it has cooled enough,
continue mixing with your hands.
Add the cold water, a quarter at
a time, and continue mixing.
When mixed thoroughly, take
the dough out of the bowl and
knead on a flour-covered bench.
You may need to add more flour
as you knead. Continue kneading
until the dough is shiny and your
hands and the bench are clear of
dough.
Roll the dough into a ball and
place in a bowl covered with cling
film. Seat aside for about half an
hour. Take a piece of dough about
the size of your fist and roll it out
on the bench into a circle about
15cm in diameter. Spread some
vegetable oil over the dough, then
sprinkle over the chopped spring
onion. Sprinkle over the sesame
seeds.
Roll the pancake into a tight
cylinder, then coil it around into
a circle (like a caterpillar rolling
itself into a circle). With a rolling
pin, flatten this circle into a
pancake again.
Add oil to your frying pan and
heat to a medium-high heat. Add
the pancake to the frying pan and
fry until golden, then flip and
cook the other side until golden
and crisp. Serve as a side dish
with chilli oil or chilli sauce or
your favourite Asian-inspired dip.
Also great at breakfast time.
APPLE AND PORK MINCE
PINWHEELS
Ingredients
500g Pork mince
2 tsp Sesame oil
1 tsp Chicken stock, powder
1 tsp Celery salt
2 tsp Fennel seeds
2 Tbsp Fresh parsley
1 tsp Fresh dill
2 cloves Garlic
1 Onion
½ Ambrosia Apple, finely diced
with skin on
2 Eggs, one for egg wash
750g Flaky puff pastry, ready
rolled
Directions
Preheat the oven to 180 deg C
fan bake.
Combine the first 10
ingredients in a bowl.
Mix in one egg.
Divide mixture evenly onto
four sheets of pastry, taking care
to ensure you leave some space
on each edge (about 2.5cm) for
easy rolling.
Lightly beat remaining egg for
egg wash and brush the edges to
help seal the pinwheel.
Roll each sheet from the long
end and cut each into four
pinwheels with a sharp knife.
Place on baking paper on
oven tray and egg wash the
pinwheels.
Sprinkle on sesame seeds.
Bake for 30min until golden.
Melanoma Deadlier
Than Road Fatalities
Summer is around the corner, and it brings with it the
temptation for some to “pre-tan” using artificial UV
tanning equipment; but is it really worth the risk?
More people die from melanoma
each year than are killed
annually in road crashes.
This statistic was part of
a comprehensive submission made to
parliament’s Health Select Committee which
is considering outlawing sunbeds for people
under the age of 18 years.
The submission was made by Accuro
Health Insurance, established in the 1970s as
a private insurer for the public health sector.
Today it trades as a private health insurer
with a widespread, general membership.
Accuro, in supporting the submission
made by the New Zealand Dermatological
Society, pointed to a New Zealand Cancer
Society figure of 324 deaths from melanoma
in 2010. According to the NZ Road Transport
Agency there were 253 road deaths for the 12
months to February 2014 and 303 for the 12
months to February 2015.
In highlighting the figure, CEO Geoff
Annals emphasised the serious nature of
the disease and his submission drew the
committee’s attention to the financial, social
and personal costs of skin cancer.
He quoted Cancer Society figures which
report that New Zealand, along with
Australia, has amongst the highest melanoma
rates in the world. In 2010 melanoma was
the fourth most common cancer with 2,341
registered cases and the sixth most common
cause of death from cancer.
The Cancer Society further reports that
skin cancer currently costs this country
about $123 million annually.
Geoff Annals says research by the Centre
for Disease Control showed the introduction
of seat belts reduced serious crash related
injuries and deaths by about half and banning
artificial UV tanning services is warranted
on the same public health grounds as the
compulsory seat belt legislation.
While Accuro’s submission related to a ban
for people under 18 years, it supports the
introduction of a total ban on commercial
artificial UV tanning.
“As a health insurer grounded in the public
health sector, we are strongly committed
to supporting the effectiveness of publicly
funded health services and better health
outcomes for all New Zealanders,” Geoff
Annals says.
A leading New Zealand dermatologist, Dr
Louise Reiche, who also made submissions
to the Health Select Committee, says she’s
treating many young people, especially
women in their 20s and 30s, with melanomas
resulting from commercial sunbed exposure.
She says clients typically lie naked on
their sunbeds and expose skin to radiation
emitted from UV lamps which can be up to
13 times greater than the peak summer sun.
She’s now treating people with cancer of the
genital skin which is more vulnerable to skin
cancer development.
“The medical profession is run off their
feet with people presenting themselves with
skin cancers causing the public health system
to be overwhelmed,” Dr Reiche says.
“The waiting list is three to four months
for urgent cases and, during the delay, the
cancers are growing. This results in poorer
health outcomes and more complex and
expensive procedures.”
Geoff Annals quoted Cancer
Society figures which report
that New Zealand, along
with Australia, has amongst
the highest melanoma
rates in the world. In 2010
melanoma was the fourth
most common cancer with
2,341 registered cases and
the sixth most common
cause of death from cancer.
VINTAGE TWIST ON
MODERN POP SONGS
THE sensational Scott
Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox
returns to the Isaac eatre
Royal this Sunday!
Furnishing a vintage twist
on modern pop songs, the
New York based collective is
back in NZ by popular
demand following two
successful tours over the last
two years.
Created by Scott Bradlee, the
rotating collective of
Postmodern Jukebox has spent
the past few years amassing
more than 600 million YouTube views and 2+
million subscribers, performed on “Good
Morning America,” topped iTunes and Billboard
charts and played hundreds of shows to packedhouse
crowds around the world. As NPR put it,
they've done this by “taking current Top 40 hits
and re-imagining them as coming from older
eras of popular music.”
The mastermind behind the group, Scott
Bradlee has turned Postmodern Jukebox into a
juggernaut by building an incredible grassroots
movement around the act. He continues to pick
the songs, create the arrangements and shows,
and puts together the performers - which
includes some notable names alongside
phenomenal "undiscovered" talent. e group
releases a new video every week, each one shot
Postmodern Jukebox is certainly a rebuke to
the contention that 'they don't make 'em like
they used to' - and there's something truly
special about witnessing their musical magic
live.
To echo Bradlee's own invitation: “Dust off
the turntable, fix yourself a stiff drink, and get
comfy. Welcome to the world of Postmodern
Jukebox.”
for every woman and all ages.
One of the appeals the Expo
has to visitors is the variety
of companies involved with
everything from bamboo tooth
brushes to gourmet vodka.
Renee Murray from NZME
Events, organiser of the Expo
says “Our aim is to have as wide
of a range of companies involved
with the Expo as possible.
Women are all different and their
individual interests are so diverse.
One woman may love the latest in
makeup or is looking for childcare
options but the woman beside her
may be more interested in sampling
handmade cheese or discovering
travel and cultural experiences.
It’s great on the weekend to see
all the various women visit the
show, from teenagers to business
women, mothers to grandmothers
and friends simply enjoying each
other’s company. It’s becoming
more common for us to see three
generations visit the Expo together as
well, with the daughter, mother and
grandmother all enjoying the show and
spending the day with each other.”
Featuring lots of new companies and
everything from fashion and accessories
to travel, giftware, fantastic food and
wine, crafts, unique businesses,
beauty, eco-friendly products,
education, community groups and
so much more – what interests the
modern woman will be at the Expo.
Enjoy unique shopping to be found at Women’s Expo
With over 200 companies involved, it will be one of the
largest events held in the region and organisers expect many
thousand women to visit the Expo over the two days.
Renee Murray from Expo
Organisers, NZME Events says
“We will be bringing a fabulous
experience to the women of
Canterbury for one weekend.
Don’t miss this opportunity to see
so many wonderful companies and
do lots of shopping under the one
roof. Aside from having the best of
local companies exhibiting at the
Expo we have a large number of
national companies who will travel
to Christchurch from all around
New Zealand especially to show
local women their products. This
is a great chance for women to
stop, relax and spoil themselves
for one weekend”.
Brandhouse will return to the
Expo again with their range of
champagne, vodka, port and
wines. Popular last year was
the Royal Dragon’s elite flavour
vodka collection with some
flavours selling out. Introducing
the most tantalizing and unique
flavoured vodka collection of its
time, flavours include Watermelon,
Green Apple, Passion Fruit,
Chocolate and Lychee… a
great vodka collection to enjoy
neat, on the rocks or in your
favourite cocktail! Visit the large
Brandhouse site at the show to
sample from their fabulous range and
take home what you love.
A new exhibitor to the show is The Lip
Lounge, a new Christchurch based
business that can help you customize
your own lipstick in your favourite
shade. You can even bring in your
favourite lipstick that may have been
deleted or you want to replicate and
you can watch the girls at The Lip
Lounge mix and create your perfect
shade right in front of you.
A popular section of the show is
the large Artisan Craft Zone. With
some favourite companies appearing
every year and new companies
featuring, it’s the perfect spot to
find original crafts and creations.
Crafter Alexander will travel to
the show all the way from Marton
in the North Island to showcase
his range of handcrafted wooden
kitchen planters. These have
sold out at the past two Expos so
Alex is looking forward to seeing
the feedback from Christchurch
visitors.
Make sure you stop by the Artisan
Craft Zone at the show and meet
some talented small businesses.
