Skate park decision soon
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
THE CITY council has revealed
Knights Stream Sports Park is
their preferred location for the
contentious Halswell Skate and
Recreation Park.
After months of controversy
and petitions a decision on the
location will be made at an extraordinary
Riccarton-Wigram
Community Board meeting
tomorrow.
Halswell Community Project
spokeswoman Chrys Horn
(right) said she was concerned
Knights Stream Sports Park is
too far away “shoving young
people” out of sight due to the
controversy
surrounding the
skatepark.
She said while
the area won’t be
isolated for long
due to the housing
development,
she did not think
it was the best option.
“I do feel like it is a little bit
like shoving young people out
and away from the centre.
“The Halswell Domain is the
obvious place because it is near
all the sports clubs,” she said.
Riccarton-Wigram Community
Board chairman Mike Mora
said he is concerned Knights
Stream Sports Park is too far
away from the Halswell centre
but has an open mind on both
locations.
He said he had personally
asked the city council to consider
installing two skateparks instead
of one, one for juniors and other
for intermediate-aged young
people.
A city council report said advantages
of the location was the
skate park could be co-ordinated
with other proposed facilities
like a “learn to ride” bicycle track
and basketball facilities.
It was the preferred location
because noise from the park
would be separated from residential
area.
The nearest residential
area is Whincops Rd which is
about 190m from the sports
park.
The news comes on the heels
that a third petition against the
skatepark being in Westlake
Reserve has been presented to
the community board.
Haley Anderson of Westlake
Reserve presented a petition
signed by 204 residents opposing
the placement of a skate park in
Westlake Reserve.
The petition comes after more
than 600 people signed against
having a skate park established
in the Halswell Domain and 800
people signed in support.
Police team to leave Riccarton
In Brief
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
and Fraser Walker-Pearce
THE RICCARTON
Neighbourhood Policing team
is on the move to Aranui in a
bid to address crime in the east,
but say they are not abandoning
the area.
The policing team has been
based in Riccarton for the
past five years, but will make
the move in October, due to a
higher crime rate in the eastern
suburbs.
Police say the team has
been successful in halving the
amount of burglaries since
the Riccarton Neighbourhood
Policing Team was established,
and have hopes the same result
will happen for the east.
The team will finish its work
in Riccarton on October 1, and
then make
the move to
Aranui, where
New Brighton
Senior Sergeant
Dave
Robertson
(left) said it
will target the high crime
rate.
“We’re definitely not abandoning
Riccarton at all, there
will still be community services
staff working in that area with
NEW BEGINNINGS: The Riccarton Neighbourhood Policing team is moving to Aranui.
large organisations and the
mall,” he said.
Acting Superintendent Peter
Cooper said although the policing
team is based in Aranui,
they may be back in Riccarton
on occasions.
“We are reasonably confident
now. As always with these
policing neighbourhood teams,
they won’t stay forever. They are
a five-year commitment which
is up now,” he said.
Senior Sergeant Robertson
said police had discussed the
move “for some time”, and
decided there was a greater
need in Aranui than there was
in Riccarton.
Acting Superintendent
Cooper said in the meantime,
there will still be a community
constable in Riccarton along
with other police resources
around the area.
The neighbourhood policing
team was first formed as a three
to five-year project designed
to address underlying causes
around crime.
Senior Sergeant Robertson
said Riccarton will still be
looked after when the neighbourhood
team leaves.
Time to accept
accepting all
cultures in
the Riccarton-
Talofa lava my name is Josiah
Tualamali’i.
I’m in my third year studying
politics and history at Canterbury
University and I went to
Middleton Grange for high
school. Now I flat in Ilam just
along from the education campus
of the University.
Two weeks ago I was driving
past Riccarton Mall and I saw a
group of people in a car roll down
their window and throw rubbish
at this Asian-Kiwi young person.
In Ilam and Riccarton we
have a very diverse population,
but our community is not one
of acceptance and inclusion
for all people. I believe it’s
really important we have open
conversations about how we can
make this an inclusive place.
Right now the city council
has opened up its multicultural
strategy for consultation until
July 30. This is a chance to shape
our city. It is also the way our city
council is demonstrating it wants
to take leadership in making this
a place of belonging for everyone.
While this is happening it’s
also a good time to think about
how inclusive we are in our own
Don’t be dumb with fire
• By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk
Management Officer
A COUPLE of big fires featured
in the city this week including
the widely reported event in the
Sol Square building that was
demolished last weekend after
fire damage completed the work
that an earthquake started five
years ago.
This fire (right) is the latest
example of the fact that if buildings
are left empty for years the
potential for them to be set on
fire increases every week.
Particularly those buildings
that can be accessed easily and
furtively.
The incident involved seven
fire appliances and a command
unit and tied up resources for 14
hours.
The other large fire was the destruction
of a 100-year-old house
in Clifton Bay that occurred in
the early hours of last Sunday.
Inquiries as to its cause are
continuing but this was another
house empty with earthquake
damage.
It was the largest fire the Sumner
Brigade has been faced with
for some time.
Also over the week were four
incidents where people were
hurt, generally trying to control
a fire, failing and burning themselves
in the process or swallowing
enough smoke to make them
sick.
A young man was burnt at a
party bonfire near the university
early on Saturday evening.
He was taken to hospital and
NEW LOCATION ADVERT.pdf 1 1/05/2014 11:51:35 a.m.
the fire was put out.
Only to be lit again after the
crew departed.
Two things.
Alcohol and fire don’t mix
well.
And re-lighting a fire after fire
crews have gone is dumb and
irresponsible.
Ngaio Marsh Theatre
set to rise again
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
IT HAS been confirmed the
Ngaio Marsh Theatre will
be rebuilt as part of the new
University of Canterbury
Students’ Association building.
The planned theatre will have
300 retractable seats and, once
retracted, there will be standing
room for 1000 people.
The previous theatre, destroyed
due to damage sustained from
the 2011 earthquakes, was named
after Dame Ngaio Marsh who was
a director and patron of theatre at
Canterbury University between
1942 and 1949.
It was well-used by the university’s
musical and drama societies,
as well as surrounding schools
and various other community
groups.
In October 2015, a decision was
made to demolish the old theatre.
Construction of the new $26
million UCSA building, including
the new theatre, is set to begin
early next year and is scheduled
to open in 2019.
The demolition of the old
UCSA building will be completed
next month.
The new UCSA building will
THE NEXT STEP: An artist’s impression of the new Ngaio
Marsh Theatre.
include a student space, event
area, bar, quiet lounge space and
the Ngaio Marsh Theatre.
The university’s musical theatre
society president Clive Antony
said the society is saving money
for the opening of the new theatre.
UCSA president James Addington
said the new building will be
51 per cent owned by the UCSA
and 49 per cent owned by Canterbury
University.
The UCSA still needs to raise
about $5 million to complete the
building and will start a campaign
to raise funds.
The campaign will officially be
launched on August 5-6 when
the UCSA hosts a student executive
reunion and fundraising
auction.
EXPLOSIONS: Children at Halswell Quarry had the chance to
build volcanos.
Volcanic activities
in the Port Hills
ERUPTING volcanoes and
shrieks of delight shattered
the peace at Halswell Quarry
Park last week, as a group of
children were treated to a hands
on lesson about the Port Hills’
volcanic history.
A group of children and
adults gathered at Halswell
Quarry Park to build volcanoes
out of material from around the
area before making them erupt.
The children also learned
how to make mokihi – ancient
canoes traditionally used by
Maori.
City council park rangers
then tested the mokihi by racing
them through the wetlands
as children bombarded them
with water and flour bombs.
Park ranger Robbie Hewson
said the rangers wanted the
kids to have fun and learn
about the history of the Port
Hills.
“We sneaked a few history
lessons into the afternoon but
mainly it was just crazy fun,’’
Mr Hewson said.
Final countdown for SCIRT programme
SCIRT’s five year programme of repairs to pipes, roads, bridges and retaining walls
is now 92% complete and will finish in December.
Almost 80% of our repair programme is focused on the city’s underground
pipe networks.
SCIRT has replaced 715km of pipes – the distance of a return trip between
Christchurch and Dunedin. These pipes are now invisibly doing their important job
below ground.
Progress in your neighbourhood
• SCIRT crews have been out in force fixing underground pipes and roads this year in the
western suburbs.
• Extensive repairs to the wastewater network in Upper Riccarton and Ilam will be
completed in September.
• Repairs to underground pipes and roading throughout the Hornby area are more than
halfway through and will be complete in October this year.
• Essential wastewater repairs at the western end of Aikmans Road in Merivale have
begun and will be completed in the next month.
• Your support is helping us to get the job done, thank you from the SCIRT team.
Our People
WESTERN NEWS
Memorable moments from nearly
Dr Kate Dewes has been fighting to keep New Zealand
nuclear-free since her early 20s. She spoke to reporter
Caitlin Miles about receiving threats for her work, sharing
a memorable moment with the United Nations secretary
general in 2011 and her plans to spend more time with
her family
Now that New Zealand has been
nuclear free for nearly 30 years,
can you tell me why you became
involved in nuclear disarmament
work?
It goes back to 1975. I was a
23-year-old music teacher at Epsom
Girls Grammar, and at the time I
was about to teach the girls a piece
of music dedicated to the survivors
of the atomic bomb that was
dropped on Hiroshima. I wanted to
learn who the victims were and what
happened to them and the aftermath
of it. I was horrified. I decided
I wanted to go back to university
and learn about peace studies and
nuclear disarmament.
Is that when you decided to
study in England?
No university in New Zealand was
offering a course in peace studies. So
I had to leave the country to be able
to do it. I went to Bradford University
to learn more about peace
talks, disarmament and what was
happening around the world. I lived
in Bradford while I studied and then
came back here.
Why did you decide to come
back to Christchurch?
Well, I had to. And I was pregnant
with my first daughter so I wanted
to settle back here. I also wanted to
be able to keep working on disarmament
and promoting peace talks
within Christchurch and the rest of
New Zealand. In 1979, I had my first
daughter and became a founding
member of the Peace Foundation.
I ran the Christchurch office from
home. I still do.
How was it balancing motherhood
and work?
It was tough. I have three
daughters and I was a solo mum so
there was a lot to do. It was really a
balancing act. I never had hired help
to look after my girls that was part
of my job. There were other woman
involved in the Peace Foundation
so we would take turns baby sitting
each others kids when we needed
to do things. I slowed down a bit
after the earthquakes, though. It was
more a case that I had to.
Why was that?
Our house in Riccarton was
damaged following the September
4, 2010, earthquake and all of my
work and the paper I had written on
nuclear disarmament, and my PhD
on peace issues, had to be put into
storage so they could be kept safe. It
MEMORABLE: Following the February 22, 2011, earthquake, UN
secretary general Ban Ki-moon told Dr Dewes that the people
of Christchurch had his support.
turned out to be about 120 banana
boxes of work. Funnily, they were
stored in the Air Force Museum
here in Christchurch.
You got some abuse for what you
were doing, can you tell me a bit
about that?
There were some people that were
against what we were doing. It was
the height of the cold war and we
wanted to educate people as to what
was going on. I was getting threatening
phone calls about being attacked
and some people even came to my
home. I remember a photo was
taken of me in the paper with one
of my daughters sitting on my lap
and someone said to me, ‘how dare
you travel and work internationally
when you have a family!’ I just
laugh about it. There was a group
that was against our idea of encouraging
schools to teach children
about peace settlements and things.
Someone from the group against
what we were doing spoke at a concerned
parents’ association meeting
in Hamilton. That’s where I am from
and my parents were in the audience.
During the person’s speech,
he called me a communist, not that
there was anything wrong with that,
but at the time that was a rather
weighted word. My parents were in
the audience, and my dad stood up
and said that I was his daughter and
he defended me. That was a really
big thing to do.
Were there many low points?
It was hard travelling internationally
and being a solo mum, but I did
it. When I wasn’t overseas, I worked
from home so I could manage.
What do you think are your really
big personal achievements?
Being a mother of three daughters
is a big personal achievement.
Getting my PhD was another one.
I was working, being a parent and
doing my PhD, so I’m really proud
of that.
WESTERN NEWS Tuesday July 26 2016 7
30 years of nuclear resistance
POLITICAL INVOLVEMENT: Former Prime Minister David
Lange spoke to Dr Dewes about making New Zealand
nuclear-free and not allowing nuclear weapons to enter the
country.
What about moments when you
have had to pinch yourself?
There were a few pinch yourself
moments with all the people I have
met and things we have managed
to achieve. I was in the United
States when I got the news that the
February 22, 2011, earthquake hit.
I thought about the house; it didn’t
do well in the September-quake
so I was worried it would be gone
completely. I got all set to head back
to Christchurch and I called one of
my daughters and she said, ‘no mum
stay there, you have some important
things to do, you need to stay and
do it’. So I did. In the morning, I saw
pictures the New York Times had
of the Cathedral and then I had to
go and speak at the UN. We were
standing around before the discussion
started and someone must have
told the UN secretary general where
I was from and he came up to me
and shook my hand and said, ‘please
tell the people of Christchurch they
have my support’. Then he told the
whole audience at the UN where I
was from and what had happened to
my city. I couldn’t speak for several
moments. I saw what had happened
at home as an opportunity to get my
point across.
What was the point you were
making?
If we had a nuclear power centre
in Christchurch, the effect would
have been devastating. Especially if
a tsunami had come through. The
rest of the country would have been
in a really horrible situation. The
Japanese ambassador challenged me
on what I said. I had no idea several
weeks later I would be writing him
letters of support for what had happened
following the earthquake that
hit Japan.
Can you tell me a bit more about
your involvement with the United
Nations?
I was appointed to the UN Secretary
General’s Advisory Board
on Disarmament Matters as a
non-government member, which
was great because I could openly
say what I wanted and what I truly
thought and felt. They had to look
at things a little differently because I
made them. I was the only female on
the Government peace delegation
in 1988, too. I think that I presented
a really different perspective to the
men as well, which was refreshing.
I wasn’t paid for my work at the UN
though.
AT WORK: Dr Dewes marks on
a map the areas that support a
nuclear-free New Zealand.
How could you afford not to get
paid for your work?
The UN paid for my flights and
accommodation so that helped. I
also continued working from home.
I taught peace studies part-time at
Canterbury University so there was
a little bit of money. I re-married so
there was a wage coming in. What I
could go without, I did. But for me,
it wasn’t about the money. I got to sit
on the advisory board and provide
my input and opinions, which was
why I kept doing it.
How did you meet your second
husband?
I was in Geneva for work in 1992
and Robert Green was at the same
convention about peace talks and
nuclear development. Robert was
the chair of the United Kingdom
branch of the World Court Project
so I gradually got to know him. I
had to convince him to come to
New Zealand, as the Government
were looking at changing a clause to
the nuclear legislation, so I needed
to convince him to come to New
Zealand to speak and make sure
they didn’t change the legislation.
When he was in the navy, he carried
nuclear bombs so he knows what
he’s talking about and I wanted to
get him to share his information
with New Zealand. Soon I had
people sending me money to help
get him to New Zealand.
What do you think of Helen
Clark running for secretary general?
I think go Helen. I watched the
debate she was in recently and
thought she did really well. She has
the knowledge and experience for
the job and I think she would do
really well at it.
What are you setting your sights
on for the future?
Robert and I are trying to wind
down a bit now, that’s easier said
than done though. I would really
like to be able to spend more
time with my four grand-children,
too.
WESTERN NEWS Tuesday July 26 2016 11
Young basketballers’
SPORTS
strong showing
TWO BURNSIDE High
School players stood out for
Canterbury at the under-15 and
under-19 National Basketball
Championships.
Toby Gillooly was named in
the under-19 boys’ tournament
team and Sila Morris in the under-15
girls’ tournament team.
Gillooly, who also plays for the
Canterbury Rams, led all scorers
in Canterbury’s 94-46 semi-final
demolition of Otago. He had 26
points and nine rebounds.
“He’s a very strong player in
terms of shooting and driving
to the basket. Toby got into a bit
of foul trouble in the final and
that hurt us badly,” said under-19
coach Paul Isitt.
Matt Dukes and former Middleton
Grange student Sam Lees
were also named in the under-19
tournament team. Lees was Canterbury’s
stand-out performer
in their 73-82 loss to Auckland
Counties-Manukau in the grand
final. He had 27 points, seven
rebounds, seven steals and six
assists.
“Sam Lees was outstanding the
whole tournament. He hustled
for loose balls, getting offensive
rebounds and taking the ball to
the hoop,” said Isitt.
RISING HIGH: Toby Gillooly chases down an Otago player during
Canterbury’s 94-46 semi-final win.
Canterbury also had two representatives
named in the under-15
tournament team.
Sila Morris had an outstanding
tournament, helping her team to
a fourth place finish in the girls’
under-15 tournament.
“She was one of our top scorers,
regularly scoring over 20
points a game. She was one of
our captains and led the team
well,” said under-15 girls’ coach
Anita Peckham.
Cashmere High School’s
Okirano Tilaia was named in the
under-15 tournament team.
Tilaia was the stand-out
performer for the Canterbury
A team that finished 5th at the
tournament in Wellington.
The under-15 A boys’ team
were unlucky to not finish higher
than 5th. Their only loss in the
tournament was to eventual
champion’s Wellington in the
quarter-finals.
CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’
High School has continued
their push for top spot in the
UC Championship with a
commanding 83-13 win over
Rangiora High School on
Saturday.
With two rounds remaining
Christchurch BHS are in second,
two points behind competition
leader’s Christ’s College.
Burnside High School are one
of eight teams in the hunt for the
final two top four play-off spots.
Burnside’s chances of a finals
appearance were dealt a massive
blow on Saturday, falling to
Marlborough Boys’ College 17-
20. With just one game and a bye
remaining Burnside will have to
beat St Bede’s College convincingly
this weekend and hope
other results go their way.
St Bede’s kept their play-off
New Hair Salon
For Halswell
A new hair salon, The Hair Lounge is soon to open in Longhurst.
Owner operator, Jenny Little is excited
about her newest salon, a sister to Root
57 in Hornby and the Cutting Room in
Leeston.
Alanna, Cheryl, and Krystal will assist
Jenny in offering a professional hair service
for the diverse population of Halswell.
This will include: cutting, colouring (plus
fashion colours), formal hair-up styling
for weddings and proms, photographic
work, barbering, and even perms and body
waving.
Value for money hair care for adults
and children will be offered, with longer
hours for those who work and as an L’Oréal
professional salon they will use and sell
L’Oréal products.
“L’Oréal which launched its first hair
colour in 1909 has been a world leader of
sophisticated hair colouring ever since.
They’re always inventing new products
that sustain and maintain hair condition,
bringing out new colours, providing inhouse
training, and supporting salons with
technical advice,” explains Jenny. “They
assist the industry and are strongly involved
with New Zealand Fashion Week, styling the
models’ hair.”
Jenny’s salons can access the L’Oréal
collective knowledge on hair issues such as
problems with home colouring to determine
suitable remedial action that will avoid
permanent damage to hair fibres. L’Oréal
products are suitable for sun damaged
or faded hair with a new Pro Fiber hair
programme that repairs the structure of
damaged hair, soon to be released.
In the salon, Jenny and the team advise
clients on hair maintenance and recommend
suitable hair products. Whether using the
salon’s services, or calling in for product,
they will listen and confidentially consult on
the best products to use at home.
“We’re friendly and approachable, with
years of combined hairdressing experience,”
says Jenny who has worked around the
world including in large companies in
England, Scotland, Germany and Cypress.
The team are keen followers of fashion,
attending Sydney’s Hair Expo each year to
learn about new products and styles.
The Hair Lounge is planned to open
during the first week in August at unit four,
in the new shopping development opposite
the health hub, on the corner of Hamill
Road and Caulfield Avenue in Longhurst.
The salon will be open from Monday to
Saturday with late nights on Tuesdays and
Thursdays.
Video store moves
to smart new premises...
just along the road
The enTerTainmenT landscape may
have changed markedly over the last two
to three years with the growth of online
offerings, but there is still a place in the
market for personal service – the kind you
get in your local video store, believes Darren,
co-owner of United Video in Blenheim road.
The business has recently moved from
227 Blenheim road to new premises just
along the road at 237 Blenheim road, and
the customers are very thankful it is still
continuing, Darren says.
While he describes the move as “difficult”
due to the lack of lighting for the first few
days, he appreciates the patience customers
showed during that time, and is thrilled with
his new premises. The store may be smaller,
with 40 per cent less rack space, but there is
still the same number of titles available. There
is still also a large gaming section with games
for Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
Darren and his three business partners
established the United Video outlet at 227
Blenheim road in October 2005, with the
business taking about two years to gain
a foothold in the area. at that time there
were three other video hire outlets in the
same general vicinity, but they have all since
closed.
United Video has stayed in business
because they offer a huge range of products
that people can’t get from downloading
or streaming, Darren says. These include
smaller releases, art house movies, classics,
film festival movies – titles that many film
buffs prefer over mainstream movies, and TV
series, which United Video also provides.
he also says downloading or streaming
content to watch on your computer doesn’t
present the opportunity to enjoy the
interaction, personal service and discussions
that you can have with the friendly team at
the video store.
it is free to become a member at United
Video in Blenheim road – to join all you
need is iD and proof of your residential
address. membership offers many benefits,
such as special deals including any six
movies, new releases included, for $20.
They have a huge selection of family and
children’s movies, and they pride themselves
on stocking all new Zealand movies released.
if a title you want is out on loan you can
reserve it in store, or by phoning 341 2080.
United Video 237 Blenheim road is in
the newly painted blue building between
Warehouse Stationery and Carpet Court,
and there is plenty more happening in the
next couple of weeks, such as lighting for
the off-street parking area and new signage.
DO YOur children lack self-confidence, or perhaps have so much energy that they need
an outlet for it? Development through drama is the ideal approach to teach confidence and
channel youthful energy while building self-esteem.
The helen O’Grady Drama Academy has been in new Zealand for 32 years. This highly
regarded worldwide programme helps students aged 5 to 17 fulfil their potential by acting
confidently and speaking clearly. This unique, self-development programme helps achieve
invaluable life skills. The confident, articulate child makes friends easily, accepts challenges
and new directions. Confident children become well-rounded adults.
Our fully qualified teachers are trained in the helen O’Grady Drama system, they ensure each
Christchurch School of Music
the ChriStChurCh School of Music
is a family-oriented community aimed
at providing quality music education in
and around Christchurch. in 2015 CSM
celebrated 60 years of teaching children
to love and appreciate music so why not
join us and become a part of the next 60
years?
CSM is a not-for-profit organisation
with a strong focus on community. On
a Saturday morning the whole family
can find something to suit. Preschool
children can start their musical journey
by joining in our experiential “take Orff
with Music” while older children and
adults may opt for group or individual
lessons on a specific instrument
(including voice). Those who already
play are welcome to join in one of the
great ensembles which all take part in
regular concerts including Saturday
soirees and the popular annual Showcase
Concert. recitals where individuals can
perform are also held regularly.
CSM also provides a comprehensive
and motivate students without the exam or peer group pressure.
Weekly class activities include speech training, creative movement
and improvisation. Our Youth Theatre programme encourages the
development of leadership and organisational skills. Three terms of
the year cover the self-development programme and in the fourth
term all students prepare a performance for parents and friends. We
also offer trinity College London examinations as an option for those
who wish to pursue an international qualification.
Our safe structured learning environment values student
With programmes offered in band,
over the last few years.
Another area that has grown rapidly
over the last few years is the Late Starters
retirement with more time on their
hands have really enjoyed learning an
instrument they never had the chance
to play in their early years and join an
if Saturday isn’t an option, CSM also
offers a range of weekday opportunities
Stems prides itself on providing flexible,
learning childhood experience .“This
option isn’t often possible for families
today for many reasons, but is so very
important for our little people” says
emma. “ My role is to work personally
with each family to find the best match
in an educator for them…I love helping
create these special relationships!”
Stems is fully licensed by the Ministry
of education and builds programmes
alongside educators for each child which
follow the NZ curriculum. Activities,
learning and ‘special moments’ are
recorded for families by educators every
HEALTH & BEAUTY
WESTERN NEWS
Book now to have
new dentures
for Christmas
While it may seem too early to start
thinking about Christmas, anyone looking
at getting new dentures fitted before the
holiday season starts needs to book in
now, says Ryan Carlton of Dentures Plus
in innes Road.
Appointments are filling up over the
next few weeks, and as the process takes
several appointments over a few months
to complete, people are advised to get in
touch as soon as possible to ensure their
dentures are settled in by Christmas, Ryan
advises.
Patients can approach Dentures Plus
directly, who will either recommend a
dentist for teeth extraction or contact
the patient’s own dentist. The dentures
are made up before the dentist extracts
the teeth, as this helps the mouth heal
faster. The professional approach taken by
Ryan and his staff ensures that the whole
process of having dentures fitted goes as
smoothly as possible.
Ryan also advises that people with
existing dentures should have them
checked every two to three years to make
sure they are not starting to wear, which
could cause discomfort in the future. This
may not be noticeable to the wearer, Ryan
says, but a free, no-obligation check-up
will determine if the dentures need some
attention, or even replacing.
The team at Dentures Plus specialise
in all aspects of denture work – from
making and fitting for first-time wearers,
relining, which is done after the first few
months to make sure the new dentures
are fitting correctly, through to providing
dentures that clip on to implants, and full
replacement dentures.
They provide full follow-up care to
patients and also supply a range of
products for denture care. These include
denture cleaners, brushes and denture
baths for soaking the dentures. Ryan
recommends Caldent denture cleaner, as
it is non-abrasive and effectively removes
stains, calculus and plaque.
Dentures Plus, 396 innes Road, is
open Monday to Thursday 8am-5pm
and Friday 8am-2pm. to make an
appointment, phone 385 5517.
Ryan also advises that
people with existing
dentures should have
them checked every
two to three years sure
they are not starting
to wear, which could
cause discomfort
in the future.
PHIL'S NEW ALBUM
IS NEARLY HERE!
FOLLOWING on from his debut release, Stone & Wood,
Phil Doublet is set to release his second album, Endless
Highway.
"I can't tell you how exciting this is," exclaims Phil. "The new
album is nearly here, and the preparations for the album
launch marking its official release are underway."
Well recognised in country music circles both here and
overseas, Phil is an accomplished guitarist-vocalist who has
been developing his skills for almost 3 decades in concert,
studio and "just jamming around at home".
He has claimed many music awards over the years with his
most recent being Male Artist of the Year 2014 at the National
Country Music Awards.
A strong ambassador for original music, Phil is front man
for the regular local event, 'Songwriters in the Round'. Taking
place towards the end of each month at Alvarado's on Stevens
St, each round showcases three songwriters with acoustic
interpretations of their music.
Phil launches his new album Endless Highway at Kaiapoi
High School on Saturday 27th August
along with special guests The
Ranchsliders, Dani Rigby, and Lana
Doublet.
Tickets are available now exclusively
at Music Works, South City, Colombo
