building a new recreational centre

on a number of different sites in 

the area. Denton Park scored 80 

per cent in total, making it the 

most viable site. 

Mr Hornbrook said he was 

frustrated with the city council’s 

communication about Denton 

Park.

TENSION IS brewing over the 

future of Denton Park 

Sports clubs which use it are 

concerned they will not have a 

future on the site if the proposed 

Hornby Library and Customer 

Services and South West Leisure 

gets the nod to go on site. 

They have started a Save Denton 

Park campaign and it is gaining 

momentum. Though the facility 

will be fantastic to have, weighing 

it against the needs of the sporting 

codes, which may be homeless as 

a result, is a pretty difficult thing 

to do. It will be interesting to see 

what happens. 

It was a sad farewell to Harewood 

hockey stalwart Bill Lynn 

(page 3). Dubbed “Mr Nunweek”, 

he had a fitting farewell last Thursday. 

After his funeral his casket 

was wheeled out into the middle 

of the No 1 field so he could have 

one last visit to Nunweek Park.

Hockey stalwart farewelled

IT WAS Harewood hockey 

stalwart Bill Lynn’s wish to visit 

Nunweek Park one last time – 

and that he did. 

The Harewood Hockey 

Club life member and patron, 

and Canterbury Hockey life 

member died on April 22, aged 

87. 

After his funeral last Thursday, 

his casket, which was illus-

Park, was wheeled out into the 

middle of the No 1 field. 

He was then saluted with a 

round of applause from those 

who attended, and later, a rum. 

“He was a great lover of 

rums,” former Harewood 

Hockey Club president Gary

He said Mr Lynn was always 

on the sideline to chat, lend 

advice and cheer on the players. 

“We call him a club icon and 

a bit of a treasure.” 

More than 500 people gathered 

to farewell the man known 

to many as ‘Mr Nunweek’ – 

about 20 of those were either

current or past New Zealand 

hockey representatives. 

His daughter Sue Mardon 

said there were two sides to her 

father, his family side, and his 

hockey life. 

She said he was surrounded 

by women – his late wife Fay, 

daughters Sue and Phillipa, and 

his three granddaughters. 

But he did spend a lot of 

time with his son-in-law Ian 

Mardon, and loved the contact

with people at the club, she said. 

Mrs Mardon said Mr Lynn 

particularly liked watching the 

junior players come through the 

age groups. 

“He was particularly proud 

of his life memberships with 

Canterbury Hockey Association 

and Harewood Hockey. He 

really stepped up to his role as 

patron of Harewood.” 

During his 70 years at the 

club, Mr Lynn was involved 

with the construction of the 

original clubrooms, fundraised 

for the first turf to be laid 

in 1989, the construction of 

the changing rooms and the 

relocation of the clubrooms. 

He was also the clubroom bar 

manager for 10 years among 

other things. 

In 1996 he was named 

Canterbury Hockey Association 

Volunteer of the Year, and 

in 2015, he got a Lifetime 

Achievement at the Marriotts 

Hadlee Sports Awards, which 

was particularly special to Mr 

Lynn and his family. 

Following the February 2011 

earthquake, Mr Lynn began 

making scrapbooks with photos 

and newspaper clippings about 

the hockey facilities and people 

affected. 

“It’s just something to keep 

me out of mischief,” he said at 

the time. 

A tribute from Canterbury 

Hockey said Mr Lynn was a 

fixture around the city’s hockey 

pitches, and his “smile and 

good nature were constants”.

DIESEL FIRE IN WIGRAM 

Firefighters were called to a 200l 

tank of diesel on fire in the middle 

of Vickerys Rd in the early hours of 

Sunday morning. A Sockburn crew 

quickly extinguished the flames, 

and notified the city council about 

the spill, which covered about 300m 

of road in Wigram. “It has been 

treated as suspicious and police 

attended with the fire crew,” a fire 

communication spokesman said.

The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton 

Community Board has approved 

$1200 for three youths. Iris 

Taramai was granted $500 to attend 

the softball 2017 international 

friendship series in Brisbane in 

July. Emily Cox was approved $500 

attend the international future 

problem solving competition in 

Wisconsin, United States in June. 

Gemma Rowe was approved $200 to 

attend the spirit of adventure trust 

trophy voyage in Auckland in June. 

TREE REMOVAL DENIED 

The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton 

Community Board has denied a 

resident’s request to remove two 

silver birch trees in Ilam. The board 

has requested staff investigate the 

cost of removal, replacement and 

resource consent of the Tyndale

said they have tried to put as

so there are no surprises. 

“It’s been a long time coming, 

so actually getting some really 

good facilities in that area 

is really important. We’ve 

budgeted for it, so the hard part 

is done,” Ms Buck said.

AS CO-WINNER of the 2016 

Canterbury Heritage Tourism 

Award, Riccarton House is a 

great tribute and testament to its 

original owner Jane Deans. 

Mrs Deans wanted a strong 

Gardening 

and imposing family home 

and was very involved the 

three main building stages of 

Riccarton House. 

These stages ranged from the 

original “substantial home of 10- 

11 rooms” (quoted by Mrs Deans 

in a letter to her builder James 

Johnston) built in 1856 to the 

40-roomed architecturally designed 

William England home, 

Motoring 

which was completed 1901 

and stands fully earthquake 

restored today. 

Jane’s husband John Deans I 

and his brother William came 

out to Putaringamotu (later 

named Riccarton Farm by the 

two brothers) in 1843 with their 

employees, the Manson and 

Gebbie families, and were the 

first Europeans to successfully 

farm on the Canterbury Plains. 

Their fascinating historical 

saga of triumph and tragedy 

is interwoven into the tour as 

visitors are able to explore many 

of the rooms of the heritage 

homestead. 

The original fabric of the 

house, the wood sourced from 

the bush and wall insulation 

made on site, has been exposed 

to see; as are some of the original 

wall papers brought out by 

Mrs Deans from the United 

Kingdom. 

And hanging up in an 

upstairs bedroom wardrobe is 

the christening gown, which 

was worn by Mrs Deans’ direct 

descendants dating from 1880 to 

the last Deans member to wear 

it in 1984. 

With the backdrop of the 

Saturday Farmers Market, 

Riccarton House is open for 

shortened Saturday tours which 

run on the half hour from 10am 

to 12.30pm.

children, the tour starts from the 

front door of Riccarton House 

and takes the visitor from the 

lowest part of the house (the cool 

store) to the top (the attic) and 

various rooms in between. 

One hour tours of Riccarton

A COUPLE of instances this 

week of young children locked in 

cars with the keys in with them. 

Generally when this occurs mum 

gets more and more anxious as 

time goes by. This in turn causes 

the kids to become agitated and 

of course the level of distress 

then ramps further upwards. 

Every now and then with 

children who are either not restrained 

or are old enough to free 

themselves, a patient and cool 

parent can get them to unlock 

the vehicle from inside. 

This happened at the antarctic 

centre last week after the mum 

phoned AA, which phoned the 

Fire Service, which responded. 

She then persuaded an obviously 

bright wee soul to flick the 

locking mechanism. They then 

left and the fire truck turned up 

to an empty park. 

To be fair to mum she 

apparently phoned AA back so 

no job turned out to be a good 

job for our Fire Service friends at 

the airport.

loitering bylaw” at Division 

St:

Constable Thorn’s wish to have 

a no loitering bylaw put in place 

on Division St, near Riccarton 

Rd, in particular and in the 

central city. 

Loitering generally means 

not enough to do, and the 

combination means trouble 

for idol minds and hands. The 

cause of the loitering needs to 

be looked at also and attended 

to. For an example: Lack of 

home supervision, truancy from 

school, (if so why), if out of the 

educational system completely, 

drug issues and addiction, being 

a start. 

Assistance to find appropriate 

employment or study would also 

help. A one-stop shop as in some 

extreme poverty areas in the 

United Kingdom could be helpful, 

where groups of appropriate 

staff visit has been proven to be 

helpful, rather than sitting in an 

office waiting. 

Possibly a “ strike” system 

could be established, and 

for an example, five strikes 

then an immediate visit to 

the army “boot camp” at 

Burnham for some weeks, and 

repeated if necessary. While 

at Burnham, attention to the 

previously mentioned issues is 

required. Medical assessments 

and educational assessments 

where necessary and home issues 

examined. Drug 

addiction needs immediate 

attention, so the Ministry 

of Health needs to provide 

additional funding to make 

treatment available. 

Measures need to be put in 

place to allow the police and 

justice to be able to intervene 

effectively—“a stitch in time 

saves nine” or in these cases, 

millions of dollars a year. 

Many of these adolescents 

need assistance to change and 

turn their lives around before 

prison occurs.

Creating a path 


Next year, Canterbury University will open a completely new 

School of Product Design. Head of school Conan Fee spoke to 

Gabrielle Stuart about robots, inventions and encouraging creativity 

Tell me about the school you’re creating? 

The idea is that graduates will be 

technically literate and can engineer 

something feasible, but also understand 

how to design something beautiful for the 


end user, and then how to take what they 

have created to market. 

It will be quite hands-on in that respect. 

Once you have your product and your 

end user in mind you can go right into 

prototyping, with access to all kinds of 

‘maker spaces’, where you can create 

things and try them. So these students 

could go anywhere, working in the 

medical field or in education or creating 

sports equipment, anything. 

I remember as a student, engineering

and arts students would constantly 

mock each other. It was like they spoke 

different languages. How on earth do 

you combine the two disciplines? 

We didn’t actually set out to do that. 

This degree started with a blank slate. 

We said what do we want to produce in a 

graduate? 

Many years ago, when I was working

5000 management students at the time. 

I remember thinking they were probably 

going to end up just selling each other

I could also see a whole group of 

talented students at high school who 

don’t have the depth in things like 

maths or chemistry that they would 

need to be engineers, but who have 

enormous creativity. Creativity seems 

to be something that is encouraged in 

pre-school, but seems to be lost or trained 

out of us as we get older. This is helping 

to create a pathway for people with that 

creativity. 

And the other side of it is the 

entrepreneurs who have created successful 

products and businesses, but have had to 

do it by the seat of their pants. 

Can you tell me about your own 

background? 

I was born and raised in Christchurch. 

The fork in the road for my career was 

when I was a student trying to decide 

whether I wanted to become a musician 

or an engineer. I chose engineering, 

because it seemed a more secure career 

path. I did my training in chemical 

engineering and followed the academic 

path to become Dean of Engineering, but 

I moulded it to my interests a lot. 

So did you keep playing music? 

Not as much as I’d have liked to.

yourself, do you think those 

inventions would have turned 

out differently? 

Yes, I do think so. Designing 

a protein extract machine with 

the end user, the farmer, in mind, 

you would approach it differently. 

Nespresso is a good example. 

The idea was to make baristaquality 

coffee, but make it 

easily accessible to people at 

home. As a functional product 

it worked well, but it took about 

30-odd years before it took off. 

It didn’t become popular until 

they incorporated the different 

designs and styles, and the right 

marketing. And George Clooney, 

too, but we don’t offer him as part 

of this course, unfortunately. 

If this kind of course works 

so well, why hasn’t it been done 

before? 

I think things have come 

together now for the first time. 

If a student can conceive an idea 

they now have all the digital tools 

on their tablet to create a 3D 

design. Then they can 3D print 

a prototype, without needing all 

the equipment they did in the 

past, or having to study for years 

all those industry skills you once 

needed to use the equipment.

TECH: Using technology, like 

virtual reality, is one of the 

things the School of Product 

Design plans to help students 

explore. 

The world is changing. Look at 

China, the online connectivity 

there and the number of small 

companies that have developed 

because of it. You can order just 

about anything and have it arrive 

on your doorstep a couple of 

weeks later. 

The other thing is artificial intelligence, 

robots. Even what we 

consider highly-trained knowledge 

workers, I think will lose 

their jobs to artificial intelligence.

software. So as that develops, 

where does that leave architects 

and draftsmen? But a job that 

won’t be lost, is human-centred 

product design. 

And personally, why have you 

stayed in Christchurch? 

It’s this. I’ve turned down 

approaches from other schools 

overseas asking me to come 

and do more of the same there, 

because I have already followed 

the classic academic career. But 

this, the idea that we can take a 

whole group of young people who 

didn’t necessarily have a pathway 

open for them, and create a host 

of graduates who will go out with 

these skills and with enthusiasm 

to create new things: This fills me 

with hope. 

There is a vibe about the city 

now, it is open to innovation. I 

think that was the silver lining 

that came from the earthquakes. 

We have built modern buildings, 

yes, but also the gap fillers and 

the murals, which were creative 

and edgy and outside the old 

social norms. They’re what has 

pulled people forward. People 

came from all over the world to 

help with rebuilding the city, and 

they’re now saying what’s next? I 

know that’s the question on my 

mind, anyway.

Denture technicians keep abreast of industry 

developments 

As registered members of the New 

Zealand Dental Council, Ryan Carlton 

and his fellow technicians at Dentures 

Plus in Innes Road are required to 

undertake verified training at various 

courses every year, to upskill and keep 

abreast of new developments in the 

industry. 

“For example, our technicians Thomas 

Gu and Nicole Yee will be attending a 

two-day course later this year on the 

fitting of first-time dentures,” Ryan says. 

In addition, Nicole has recently spent 

four weeks in India as part of a course 

she is undertaking on maxilo facial work, 

which deals with artificial eyes, ears and 

noses. 

“This is a service we may potentially 

offer in the future,” Ryan says. 

Ryan himself has recently returned 

from the International Dental Show, 

which was held in Cologne, Germany. 

“It’s the largest trade show in the world 

for the industry, with manufacturers 

and suppliers from all over the world 

showcasing their products. There were 

over 2300 stands – it was really eyeopening.” 

Ryan says he was particularly interested 

in how digital technology is being 

incorporated into dentistry, for example 

3D printing being used at different stages 

of denture manufacture such as the crown 

and bridge. 

“It’s still in the very early stages, and it 

needs more development, but that’s where 

it’s heading,” Ryan says. 

He believes that in the future, people 

that make and fit dentures will be seen 

as architects rather than technicians, 

with patients being able to download the 

pattern for their dentures the architect 

has designed on computer, and print 

them on a 3D machine. 

In the meantime, he emphasises the 

importance of keeping dentures clean.

CHILLI LIME PINEAPPLE 

Ingredients 

BEEF MINCE NACHOS 

Ingredients 

1 Pineapple 

2 Limes, zest and juice 

¼ tsp Dried chilli, chopped 

Directions 

Cut the skin off the pineapple, 

cut into wedges and remove the 

core. Rub the lime zest and chilli 

over the pineapple. 

Cook on a medium-hot 

barbecue, or under the grill, until 

golden then squeeze fresh 

lime juice over just before 

serving. 

BANANA PANCAKES 

Ingredients 

3 medium Bananas 

2 Eggs, separated 

100g Yoghurt, plus more to serve 

50g Butter, melted and cooled 

plus more for cooking 

150 ml Milk 

½ tsp Vanilla paste, or essence 

½ tsp Salt 

1 cup Self raising flour 

50 ml Honey or maple syrup to 

serve 

Directions 

Mash one banana with a fork 

and then whisk together with 

the egg yolks. Mix in the yoghurt 

and melted butter, then add the 

milk and vanilla essence and 

whisk until smooth. 

Add the salt and flour and stir 

until just combined and a batter 

is formed. 

Whisk the egg whites until 

they form soft peaks. Fold into 

the batter half at a time trying to 

keep as much air as possible in 

the batter (if you prefer a thinner 

pancake you can add a little 

more milk). 

Slice the other bananas into 

half cm slices. 

Add a little butter to a medium 

hot non-stick frying pan 

and then place banana slices in 

groups of three for each pancake. 

Allow them to cook for two 

minutes. 

Pour two tablespoons of batter 

over each group of bananas 

to form a pancake and allow to 

cook for two to three minutes 

until the top has bubbles and is 

starting to dry out a little. 

Carefully flip and cook on the 

other side another one to two 

minutes. 

Remove, keep warm and serve 

in a stack with honey and natural 

yoghurt. 

2 Tbsp Olive oil 

1 Onion, finely diced 

500g Beef mince 

800g Whole peeled tomatoes 

2 Tbsp Tomato paste 

¼ tsp Chilli powder 

1 packet Corn chips 

½ cup Cheddar cheese 

¼ cup Low-fat sour cream 

1 sprig Parsley 

Directions 

Heat a saucepan, add olive 

oil and onion, and cook over a 

medium heat for five to eight 

minutes until softened. Add beef 

mince and cook for five minutes, 

breaking up the mince with a 

wooden spoon. 

Chop canned whole tomatoes 

and add to the pan. 

Add tomato paste and simmer 

for five minutes. Add chilli 

powder and season with salt and 

pepper to taste. 

Spoon mince mixture onto 

four plates and surround with 

corn chips. Serve topped with 

grated cheddar cheese, a dollop 

of sour cream and parsley.

Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure 

Under the New Zealand Building Code, 

all buildings, including residential, need to 

be suitably ventilated, either with opening 

windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 

states: “The objective of this provision is 

to safeguard people from illness or loss of 

amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are 

many benefits to forced, or mechanical, 

ventilation over opening windows, including 

warmth, security, reduction of outside noises 

and reduction of condensation. 

Traditional domestic ventilation systems 

are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from 

outside via the roof space and force the stale air 

out through gaps around windows and doors. 

The incoming air from these 

systems has to be heated or 

cooled to keep the house warm 

in winter or cool in summer. 

The Smooth-Air HEX390 is 

a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It 

extracts air from the house and 

at the same time brings in fresh 

air. These two streams of air 

pass through a heat exchanger, 

which warms incoming air in

FOLLOWING on from the success of his ‘e 

Story of the Blues’ Show & Supper in March, 

modern day Blues guitarist, Ryan Neville is set 

to do it all again next weekend before heading 

off to gigs in USA. 

Nashville Tennessee, Las Vegas and Austin 

Texas are amongst the places Ryan has 

performed over the years. His love of blues 

inspired him to assemble his current show, ‘e 

Story of the Blues’. 

A masterful and colourful stage show 

incorporating live musicians, video, light, and 

sound, ‘e Story of the Blues’ takes you on a 

journey from the famous Robert Johnson 

Crossroads to the backwaters of the Mississippi 

Delta.
