HEY DAY: Trevor Williams playing for Hornby in the 60s and
70s. Inset: In more recent times.
Hornby goal-kicking great passes on
• By Andrew King
A HORNBY rugby league
goal-kicking legend from
yesteryear has died after a battle
with illness.
Trevor Williams, 72, was
known for his prodigious goalkicking
ability during the 1960s
and 1970s.
He won the Turner and Le
Brun Cup for most goals in 1971
and 1972 and was sportsman of
the year in 1971. He could kick
a goal from inside his own half,
frustrating the opposition when
they conceded penalties 60mplus
from their goal posts.
Said former teammate and
coach Brian Langton: “I knew if
he was in the side and we got a
penalty anywhere in their half,
there was about a 95 per cent
chance it would go over in the
wet or fine.”
Mr Langton said he was in
the same kicking mould as Don
“The Boot” Clarke, who scored
202 points in 89 games for the
All Blacks between 1956-64.
He said Williams was a “big,
strapping man”, who was comfortable
on the “paddock” and
could play anywhere you put him.
“He played most of his footy at
fullback, but you easily put him
wherever and he would not let
you down,” he said.
“He was well liked and respected
at the club and he
will definitely be missed,” he
said.
Williams’ son Brad said he
was a classic Kiwi dad who
“loved a beer and a punt.”
“He had a great life. He was
a very caring honest man who
had a really good nature. He
went way too early,” he said.
Williams also coached at
Hornby and the Halswell club.
Compo
unlikely for
businesses
hit by
roadworks
• By Julia Evans
BUSINESSES HARD hit by
roadworks are unlikely to get
any compensation from the city
council.
In a city council report, staff
have said it was “not considered
feasible” for it to hand out rates
relief or a monetary grant to
businesses hard hit by nearby
roadworks.
It also questioned how much of
declining sales revenue could be
directly attributed to city council
roadworks.
Changes in market trends, local
demographics, traffic flows and
competition would also have to be
considered, said the report.
The idea came about when city
councillor Deon Swiggs said in
June that many businesses in his
ward have struggled to make ends
meet, due to city council roadworks
taking away their parking.
It was reported that Riccarton
Rd businesses The Running Bull
and Subway were forced to close
due to ongoing roadworks.
At its June 20 meeting, city
councillors called for an investigation
into some form of compensation
– whether that be through a
rates rebate or grant.
I REMEMBER as a young kid in
the 70s going to the showgrounds
and watching an uncle, Gary, play
league for Papanui.
There was also a guy I vaguely
remember kicking goals from
inside his own half for Hornby, a
big bloke called Trevor Williams.
He’d take a handful of steps back,
walk straight in and over it went.
Sadly, Trevor passed away
recently and today on page 1 we
speak to another Hornby great,
Brian Langton, about his old
teammate.
There were great days at the
showgrounds during that era,
and before, and of course into the
1990s with the fantastic rivalries
between Hornby and Halswell.
And thanks to Halswell stalwart
Darryl Hawker for letting me
know Trevor had passed on.
Trevor was involved in that club,
too.
West End actor grew up in Ilam
Returned for
one-man show
about his UK
deportation
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
BUILDING AN arts career on
London’s West End is a far cry
from reality for most – but not
for Christchurch performer Nic
Kyle.
Taken under Broadway star
Elaine Paige’s wing, Kyle, 30,
led a soaring four-year stint,
performing in sell-out shows in
one of the biggest commercial
theatre scenes in the world.
But it all came to abrupt halt
when the actor, who grew up
in Ilam, found himself being
deported.
Kyle was in the United
Kingdom for two years before
deciding to get a defacto visa.
“I was seeing an English girl
and we decided to go into a
partner defacto visa which in
hindsight was probably not a
good idea,” he said.
THe relationship broke up but
Kyle decided to keep the visa.
THe visa issue was flagged
when Kyle was being checked
Kyle was locked away from
heading home to Christchurch
where he has been for the past
month.
It was in Germany where he
met his girlfriend Canadian
Sophie Schmidt, a professional
football player who is a
midfielder for FFC Frankfurt in
the German national league.
Kyle said meeting Schmidt
was a complete coincidence
as both her club and The
English Theatre Frankfurt were
sponsored by the same bank.
“THe team always come to
the show every year and have a
mix and mingle with the cast
afterwards and we always go to
their game the week afterwards,”
he said.
Last week, Kyle made light
of getting kicked out of the
UK in his original one-man
show Deported. For the second
element of the show, he brought
in city performers Matt Hudson
and Jack Marshall to take part
in dark comedy Coffin.
Back in London, Kyle
performed in the sell-out West
End premier of the show.
He was given the rights to
perform the show after writer
Elliott Langsdon found out he
had been deported.
Kyle will be heading back
to Europe to travel with his
girlfriend before he decides what
to do next. “I am not happy I got
deported but it has worked out
really well . . . if I hadn’t, would
I had ever met Sophie? Who
knows?” he said.
Kyle’s career on the West End
began after he sung for Paige
during her New Zealand
tour.
“I was going to move to
Melbourne and she was like, no
you are talking s***. I am going
to help get you to London . . .
and she helped get me an agent,”
he said.
Getting active for health
JACKIE HOULE is a changed
woman compared to six months
ago.
Suffering from social anxiety,
diabetes and struggling to come
to terms with the death of her
sister seven years ago, Ms Houle
was at a crossroads as she went to
her doctor’s office.
A brave decision to try the
green prescription’s eight-week
Be Active programme for people
who want to increase their
level of physical activity, has Ms
Houle spending more time on
her newly-purchased exercise
cycle than her couch.
Participants in the programme
try out a range of activities such
as aqua jogging, gym, sports
and dance. They are supported
by Sport Canterbury staff and
discuss motivation, healthy eating
and managing stress – topics
that support a healthy lifestyle
“I’ve lost 22 pounds (10kg),
the panic attacks that I used
to suffer, particularly in social
situations, are not nearly as bad
and my blood sugar levels have
dropped.
I’ve even purchased an exercycle
which I definitely wouldn’t
have done prior to the (Be Active)
programme,” she said.
Ms Houle, who moved from
her native Canada 11 years ago
to be with her partner, says her
TRANSFORMED: Jackie Houle encourages anyone to give the
Be Active programme a go, regardless of fitness level, age or
health issues.
sister’s death had added to her
stress.
She has not been back to
Canada since the tragedy but
thanks to her progress over
the past nine months, she is
planning a trip back home next
year.
“That’s all been part of it,” she
said: “Losing my sister made me
really depressed for a very long
time; we were very close.
I’ve learnt a lot about myself
and my health and received so
much support. I’m glad I took
the chance and signed up for the
programme.”
The Be Active programme
begins this week in Aranui,
Lincoln, Spreydon and
Bishopdale.
Ms Houle encouraged anyone
to give it a go regardless of fitness
level, age or health issues.
People can refer themselves
into the programme or talk
to their GP about a green
prescription.
Another $100k to help Maddie
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
MORE THAN $100,000 has
been raised at a fundraising
evening to help West Melton
teenager Maddie Collins.
The event at the Addington
Raceway last week drew a
crowd of more than 300 people
in support of Maddie, who
is in urgent need of a kidney
transplant.
She is waiting to hear if she
can get a transplant at The Johns
Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore,
United States, which is expected
to cost $750,000.
Compensation unlikely for
businesses hit by road works
•From page 1
But a staff report that will be
tabled at a city council committee
meeting says compensation via
both methods is unfeasible.
Staff said it would be too difficult
to work out the specific
objective criteria that would be
required to define the extent of
disruption to qualify for relief.
Difficulties working out the
amount of rates remission that
would be provided and the length
of time it should be applied were
also cited as part of the reasoning.
The $100k adds to the $170,000
already raised for Maddie
through Givealittle pages and
community events, bringing the
total now raised to more than
$270,000.
Maddie is in Auckland’s Starship
Hospital with her mother,
Sarah Manson Collins, this week
having more tests and getting
advice about Maddie’s medication
and dialysis treatment.
Mrs Manson Collins said
the fundraising event was amazing.
“It was a fantastic night and
it was great because everybody
got to laugh,” she said.
A grant would be easier to
establish but it would still be
too hard to work out who was
entitled.
“Financial compensation by
establishing a new type of grant
would be more feasible
. . . however, there would remain
a significant practical difficulty in
defining who should qualify,” the
report said.
It is recommended the committee
receive the information in the
report at Wednesday’s meeting
but no further action is likely to
be taken.
Residents win liquor store battle
• By Julia Evans
“WHEN A neighbourhood
rallies, we can do anything.”
That was reaction of Harewood
resident Colin Fussell after
a long-running bid to set up a
liquor store in Trafford St failed.
Nearby residents had opposed
the Harewood Bottle Store fighting
it tooth and nail for more
than eight months.
Businessman Samarth Rajeshkumar
Limbachiya’s application
for a liquor licence to operate
the Harewood Bottle Store
was declined by the city council’s
district licensing committee
last week.
Said Mr Fussell when contacted
by Western News : “I’m
swinging from the rafters.”
But the battle may not be over
as the decision could be subject
to an appeal by Mr Limbachiya’s
if he applies within 10 working
days.
The end of that appeal period is
August 9.
Western News has not been
able to make contact with Mr
Limbachiya to see if he will appeal.
And Mr Fussell said although
that comes with the territory, the
residents would be ready for another
fight so it would be a waste
of the applicant’s money.
“Our opposition will be ready
and waiting,” Mr Fussell said.
He and fellow Trafford St resident
Bruce Tulloch championed
a petition against the application
that was signed by 1144 people.
And the city council received
86 further public objections
before the hearing on July 13
and 14.
Mr Tulloch said there are
more than enough options for
buying liquor in the area so
there was no logic behind granting
yet another licence.
He thanked everyone who had
contributed to the campaign.
Mr Fussell said while this battle
was won, the war is not over.
“The battle has been won but
we need to address the greater
issue in other neighbourhoods
who are facing the same problem,”
Mr Fussell said.
In its report, the licensing
committee said granting the application
would be detrimental
to the neighbourhood.
“We have formed the opinion
that amenity and good order
would be reduced by more than
a minor amount. The foreseen
reduction may not be great but it
is likely to impact on the people
who live in the vicinity,” the
report said.
A NEW retirement village
planned for Avonhead will offer
specialised care for people with
dementia.
Summerset has purchased land
to build its third Christchurch
retirement village, which will
include a memory care centre.
Chief executive Julian Cook
said the 9.5ha property on
Hawthornden Rd is close to the
Russley golf course and other
recreational areas.
“We are thrilled to be able to
secure this land,” Mr Cook said.
The memory care centre – a
new concept to support residents
living with dementia – will provide
one bedroom apartments in
a secure environment.
“We are the first (company) in
New Zealand to launch this style
of apartment living for those living
with dementia,” he said.
The new Avonhead retirement
home will become a thriving
community with more than 240
homes planned for the site.
It will include two and three
bedroom villas, apartments and
serviced apartments, as well as
NEW: The modern building still encapsulates some of Villa Maria’s long history.
New Villa Maria building
blessed at opening
A NEW and modern
teaching block has been
opened at Villa Maria
College in time for
the school’s upcoming
centenary.
The new classroom block
was blessed last week and
offers a nod to the school’s
history.
“The committee that
was established to choose a
name for the new building
loved the idea of cherishing
the history of the college, “
principal Deborah Brosnahan
said.
The college has named
its new building Kia Toa,
which was the name of
the original late 1800s
homestead the Sisters of
Mercy purchased as part
of the Peer St property in
1918.
“We understand Kia Toa
means to be brave and to
store. Kia Toa expresses
these ideas for the building
as a place from which girls
will set off, strongly and
bravely with their store of
knowledge to take the story
OPEN: The Reverend John Adams from the Catholic
Diocese of Christchurch blessing Kia Toa.
of mercy with them,” she
said.
Kia Toa boasts 17 large
teaching spaces for technology
learning, including
food, textiles and digital
as well as media studies,
english, social sciences and
religious education.
And it is part of the college’s
10-year modernisation
programme.
SPEECH: Jo Johnstone (left), Belfast School’s deputy
principal, welcoming Sue Elley.
Hornby High plays a big part of welcome
for new Belfast School principal
• By Julia Evans
HORNBY HIGH students
were part of a special Mihi
Whakatau, a Maori welcoming
for the new Belfast School
principal.
Sue Elley, who is taking up
the role, said it was the most
wonderful experience.
She replaces veteran principal,
Peter Simpson, who sat at
the helm of the school for 23
years.
GOODBYE: Head boy, Billy Roper of Hornby High School
speaking fluent Te Reo in the ceremony welcoming Sue Elley
to Belfast School.
Belfast pupils welcomed Mrs
Elley with a kapa haka performance
and speeches.
And students and staff from
Hornby High School, where
she worked as the assistant
principal for four years, were
also there.
The Hornby students performed
as a kapa haka group
and head boy Billy Roper gave
a goodbye speech in Te Reo.
“It brought a really nice closure
to that part of my life. My
previous students physically
took me to the new school,”
she said.
Above all, the mihi really
introduced Mrs Elley to the
overwhelming sense of community
that the Belfast School
has.
“It’s such a strong community
based school . . . Belfast
isn’t really a suburb, it is its
own town on the edge of a
city,” she said.
But the new role, will bring
some a new challenges that
Mrs Elley said she’s very excited
to begin.
It’s her first time as a principal.
However, she said with
the support of the school
community and collegian of
experienced principals she’s
in contact with, she’s in good
hands.

LEGEND: When
Maori legend inspires
creative Rangi girls
• By Julia Evans
RANGI RURU Girls’ School
pupils were asked to create a
story quilt as a class to be used
to tell the story of a myth or
legend.
The year 7 class chose to tell
the Maori legend of Tinirau
and the Whale, which they had
learnt in their Te Reo Maori
class.
The girls opted to create cushions
instead of a quilt, so they
could each take part of the story
HERBED CHICKEN THIGHS
Directions
Ingredients
6 Chicken thigh cutlets, skinned
and boned (about 500g)
1 clove Garlic, crushed
1 Anchovy fillet, finely chopped
2 Tbsp Breadcrumbs
1 Tbsp Grated parmesan cheese
1 small Lemon, zested and juiced
2 Tbsp Chopped parsley
1½ tsp Cumin seeds, toasted and
lightly crushed
1 drizzle Olive oil, to moisten
To cook
1 packet Breadcrumbs, or as
much as is needed to coat
chicken
1 drizzle Oil, for frying
1 Lime, or lemon, cut into
wedges for serving
Directions
Place chicken thighs in a shallow
ceramic or glass dish. Mix
together garlic, anchovy, breadcrumbs,
parmesan, lemon, parsley
and cumin seeds. Moisten
with olive oil, season with salt
and freshly ground black pepper
and spread evenly over chicken
thighs. Cover, place in the fridge
and leave to marinate for about
one hour.
Remove from fridge and bring
to room temperature.
Pour enough oil into a large
frying pan to just cover the base
and place over a medium heat.
Rub marinade into chicken as
much as you can then roll each
chicken thigh in dry breadcrumbs.
Place in hot oil and fry on each
side until brown and cooked
through. Serve with plenty of
lime or lemon wedges.
MANGO, AVOCADO AND
VANILLA ICECREAM
Ingredients
2 Avocados, firm just-ripe,
diced
2 large Mangoes, ripe sweet,
diced
1 tsp Vanilla paste, or extract
3 Tbsp Liquid honey, or icing
sugar
3 Tbsp Coconut cream
1 Lime, freshly juiced
1 bottle Passionfruit syrup
Freeze avocado and mango
pieces on a tray or in a dish
lined with baking paper for eight
hours or overnight, until frozen
hard. Remove from freezer and
thaw for 5-10min before adding
to a food processor with vanilla,
honey, coconut cream and lime
juice.
Blitz until smooth. Serve
immediately or scoop into a
container and return to freezer
until wanted. Drizzle with the
passionfruit syrup when serving.
CINNAMON BAKED APPLES
Ingredients
6 Mahana apples
1 cup Marshmallows
¼ cup Raisins
6 Cinnamon sticks
⅓ cup Apple syrup
1 cup to serve Cream
¼ cup Shredded coconut
Directions
Heat oven to 180 deg C.
Lightly grease a baking dish
with oil.
Run a sharp knife around the
middle of each apple – this allows
the apple to expand and not
explode as it bakes.
Place apples in prepared dish.
Combine chopped marshmallows,
raisins and shredded coconut
in a bowl.
Place a cinnamon stick in
the centre of each apple where
the core was removed and pack
marshmallow mixture around
the cinnamon stick to fill cavity.
Drizzle filling with a little apple
syrup. Bake for 30min or until
golden brown. Serve drizzled
with extra apple syrup and with
cream or yoghurt on the side, if
desired.
Saints march up
the high school
football ladder
• By Andrew King
ST THOMAS have returned
to the top of the table in the
Connetics first XI football
competition with a tight 1-0
victory over St Andrew’s College.
They now turn their attention
to ninth placed Riccarton
High, who St Thomas
coach Richard Washington
said will be a determined
side with nothing to lose
and everything to gain.
The team known as the
‘saints’ are taking it one
game at a time, but with
two rounds left before the
semi-finals, they know they need
to keep putting in solid performances.
Washington said the growth
in the team this year has been
amazing.
“The brotherhood is tight, the
school are right behind the team
and we will be hoping for a quality
performance,” he said.
The two western schools will
face off at the Christchurch
SPORTS
Richard
Washington
Football Centre – where all league
games are played this year – tomorrow
at 5.45pm.
In other games, Burnside High
will watch from the sidelines with
a bye and will be hoping results
go their way to hold on to second
spot on the table, which they
earned with a 5-1 win over
Christ’s College last week.
Middleton Grange, who
were beaten 3-0 by Cashmere
High last week, will
have a tough task ahead of
them tomorrow night when
they face St Andrew’s who
will be no doubt hurting
after dropping from first to
fourth. That game will be played
at 4pm.
Burnside High find late season form
• By Andrew King
BURNSIDE HIGH recorded
their first win of the season in
the UC Championship with a
tight 33-31 victory over Mid-
Canterbury Combined on
Saturday.
With two rounds to go, it
would have been a nervous time
for the boys from Memorial Ave
as they contemplated a potentially
winless season.
Down 18-0 at halftime, the
thought of another defeat must
have stirred something inside
Burnside as they came out and
scored 33 points in the second
half giving them a bonus point
win and moving them off the
bottom of the table.
St Thomas tried playing catchup
against Nelson yesterday,
losing 23-20 after the round 12
game was postponed due to the
recent deluge on July 22. The
loss follows their 17-12 defeat
at the hands of St Andrew’s on
Saturday.
They will now look ahead to
their next match against Mid-
Canterbury Combined on Saturday
before lining up against
Marlborough Boys’ College in
the final round.
In the other games,
Christchurch Boys’ High beat
Marlborough Boys 20-14 in
Blenheim, which was enough
to retain second position on the
table, two points behind Timaru
Boys’ High.
SENIOR LIVING
GO-Advanced
Omega-PC Fish Oil
It is well known how important
omega-3 fatty acids are to good
health. It is estimated most people
don’t even get a third of the
recommended omega-3 fatty acids
on a weekly basis. Countries with
a higher amounts of omega-3 in
their diet are known to have lower
cardiovascular disease and, in
many cases, better overall health.
Recent research has shown
inflammation to be a big part of
disease and the ageing process.
Fish oil can help reduce
inflammation by providing
essential fatty acids required
by the body to heal itself and
maintain good health. Until now
most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty
acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however,
naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride
and phospholipid form but until recently
the phospholipid form was lost due to the
manufacturing process.
GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new
standards in fish oil as it contains
omega-3 attached to both triglycerides
and phospholipids. Studies have shown
GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better
absorbed, leading to increased levels of
vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs
thru giving the potential for more health
benefits.
121 Skyhawk Road
GO-Advanced Omega-PC is produced
from fresh wild deep sea cold water fish
using a new advanced and more natural
cold extraction process that better
preserves the natural nutrient profile found
in fish. It is manufactured to high GMP
standards and is molecularly distilled to
remove any containments, toxins and
heavy metals.
Further info on this revolutionary new
fish oil and its benefits is available from
Osteoporosis is a serious condition
...but research shows it can be reversed!
Osteoporosis is not taken as a serious
condition by most people! Most people
don’t realise they have osteoporosis until
a fracture happens, as there are usually
no signs or symptoms. Fractures can
commonly be debilitating with chronic
pain and can lead to early mortality.
Fractures kill more women than all
gynaecological cancers put together and
one in six women taken to hospital with
a hip fracture, will not come out alive and
men fare even worse. Around one in three
women and one in twelve men are affected
with osteoporosis.
The most common osteoporotic fractures
are of the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip.
Vertebral collapse is a compression fracture
and causes back pain often with shooting
pains due to compression of the nerves.
Multiple vertebral fractures lead to a
stooped posture, loss of height and chronic
pain with reduced mobility. Hip fractures,
in particular, usually require prompt
surgery, as there is a serious risk associated
with it of deep vein thrombosis and
pulmonary embolism leading to increased
mortality.
Osteoporosis literally means “bones with
holes”. It occurs when bones lose minerals
such as calcium more quickly than the
body can replace them. Although calcium
is essential for bone health other minerals
like magnesium, zinc and trace minerals
like silica, boron, manganese, copper are
essential also. Vitamin’s D3 and K2 have
been shown to be essential in a bone
support program.
A less well known mineral strontium,
Osteoporosis, the weakening of the bone is a serious health threat
that often leads to severe pain, fractures & early mortality. Research
has found the bones can be re-mineralised & strengthened when
the required nutrients are present. Minerals calcium, magnesium &
vitamins D3 & K2 are essential but are not enough in many cases.
A missing link appears to be the mineral strontium.
Research shows strontium to positively affect bone density.
Bringing You the Best in Natural Health!
WESTERN NEWS
that is naturally found in your bones
has been researched and found in
four landmark studies to actually
reverse bone loss when sufficient other
nutrients are present. One study of 1,649
postmenopausal women with osteoporosis
who had had at least one fracture were
divided into two groups. Both groups
took vitamin D and calcium supplements.
One group were also given 680mg/day
of strontium. After the three year study
the strontium group showed an unheard
of average bone growth of 8.1%. This
study shows that osteoporosis can not
only be halted but may even be reversed
and without the side effects of common
osteoporosis drugs.
Further information on how to
support your bone density and overall
health is available from the natural
health specialists at Marshall’s Health
& Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road,
ONLY GO OMEGA-PC retains the natural Phospholipids that have been shown to be so beneficial for Good
Health BUT are lost in other brands of fish oil due to the less natural manufacturing processes used!
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC SETS NEW STANDARDS IN FISH OIL!
Omega-3 fish oil normally contains the vital Omega-3 fatty acids in a triglyceride form. Fish however naturally
contain Omega-3 in a triglyceride & phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the
manufacturing process. GO OMEGA-PC is produced using a new more natural cold extraction process that better
preserves the natural nutrient profile found in fish. Studies show GO OMEGA-PC offers superior absorption with
increased omega-3 fatty acids in organs giving the potential for more health benefits.
GO-ADVANCED OMEGA-PC OFFERS:
• Superior absorption of vital Omega-3, as
shown in research
• Advanced new cold extraction better
preserves the natural nutrient profile
found in fish
• Naturally contains phospholipids to
support cellular health
• Contains vitamin D3 to support immune,
bone & cardiovascular health
• Supports cardiovascular health - Countries with
a higher Omega-3 intake have much lower rates
of heart disease
• Supports blood circulation, healthy cholesterol &
• Supports joint health, joint mobility & repair
• Supports overall health & wellbeing
Third Aged Tours
Taking people aged over 50 on trips
around New Zealand and the world for
nearly 20 years has earned Third Age Tours
a brag book that Director Brenda Corby-
Yarrall says “businesses would give their
eye teeth for.’’
“Taking small groups of 10 – 24 people
means I can operate the tour in a relaxed,
companionable manner. We have an
absolute blast when we’re away. It’s all about
having fun”.
“Most of my trips are run annually
because they’re so
popular, but I’m always
adding new destinations
- like “Sicily, South Italy
& Vatican” + “Cuba”, as
people ask for them.’’
Brenda checks out
all accommodation
before booking it, and
ensures the party spends
at least a few nights at
each place. “That way
you don’t feel like you’re
living out of a suitcase.’’
Many clients now have
made over 20 tours with
us, one has completed a
whopping 27 tours.
“My clients tell me
they keep coming back
because of the size of the groups and our
relaxed manner. My motto is ‘There are no
strangers, only friends waiting to meet.’
We gather together for breakfast at
8.30am which sets us up for the day and
everybody thinks is a very civilised hour.’’
“I organise incredible trips at incredible
prices. Look around, you can’t find better
HOME & HEATING
Choosing the right heat
pump for your home
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much more
convenient than a log burner as you just need
to press a button. But how do you decide
what is best? Choosing the right sized heat
pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort
levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore
important to get professional advice from heat
pump experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it
is important to select the correct size for your
requirements that will handle the job but not
be unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat pump
is also extremely important. The cheapest
installation is a back to back where the outdoor
unit is positioned directly behind the indoor
unit however this is not necessarily always
the best option. It is vital that the indoor
unit is positioned in a place that will not be
constantly blowing on you. Also important, is
the location of the outdoor unit. Most people
do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly
in their outdoor entertaining area or right
outside their bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands
vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of
systems and price, so it depends on your
application as to which will be most suitable.
Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu,
Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are
all reliable brands backed up by good technical
after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but
also validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the
remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi
capabilities.
Heating is a major investment in your home
and it is vital to get the right advice.
Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,
installation and servicing of all major brands
of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers
ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as
to which system will suit your application
the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no
obligation quote and will come to your home
to see what is required. Visit our website at
The facts about
home ventilation
Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure
Under the New Zealand Building Code,
all buildings, including residential, need to
be suitably ventilated, either with opening
windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1
states: “The objective of this provision is
to safeguard people from illness or loss of
amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are
many benefits to forced, or mechanical,
ventilation over opening windows, including
warmth, security, reduction of outside noises
and reduction of condensation.
Traditional domestic ventilation systems
are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from
outside via the roof space and force the stale air
out through gaps around windows and doors.
The incoming air from these
systems has to be heated or
cooled to keep the house warm
in winter or cool in summer.
The Smooth-Air HEX390 is
a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It
extracts air from the house and
at the same time brings in fresh
air. These two streams of air
pass through a heat exchanger,
which warms incoming air in
winter and cools in summer if
air conditioning is being used.
This means that up to 80% of
the energy which would be
Remove
cooking smells
and steam!
Remote
extraction fans
wasted using a traditional positive pressure
system is recovered, resulting in significant
energy savings and therefore lower heating or
cooling costs.
Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation
systems have been considerably more
expensive than traditional positive pressure
systems. However, with Smooth-Air’s unique
manufacturing capabilities, a HEX390
balanced pressure system can be installed for
a similar price as a traditional positive pressure
system.
WESTERN NEWS
Experience expert
dental care
Six fabulous years and still going strong!
The team of Fendalton Dental Surgery
takes this opportunity to thank their
loyal patients, the supportive Canterbury
dental fraternity and the wonderful local
community. They celebrate yet another
glorious anniversary after being forced
to relocate to this premises after the
earthquakes in 2011. It used to be called
Cambridge Dental Surgery while they
were in the CBD but since moving to this
lovely Fendalton suburb in July 2011.
Fendalton Dental Surgery, on the
high profile corner of Idris & Glandovey
Roads has been looking after the dental
needs of the local community as well
as the wider Christchurch area since
2011. Dentists Keith Chiang and Zohnia
McNeill and Oral Health Therapist, Amy
Lee offer a complete range of dental
and oral care services, all in a very calm
and relaxed environment. Supporting
them are dental nurses Simone and Jola
and the ever-efficient highly organised
practice manager, Aysha who bring with
them their very own style and range of
competencies in each and every aspect.
“We listen carefully to what our patients
tell us so we can address each of their
dental problems and help them achieve
good oral health,” says Keith.
A major component of Keith’s work
is under IV sedation, which is available
for people that are very nervous about
visiting the dentist. He has performed
more than 2000 Intravenous sedation
procedures and the clinic is equipped
with the latest advanced equipment for
sedation monitoring. He has a special
interest in Oral Surgery, Impacted
wisdom teeth, surgical extractions,
Placement of Implants and Intra venous
sedation.
For people with damaged or missing
teeth, Zohnia will discuss with them the
options of having crowns, permanent
implants or dentures fitted, all of which
have the added advantage of helping
clients regain their functional bite as
well as improve their smile and overall
confidence. She has a special interest in
Cosmetic dentistry, Root Canals and
Geriatric dentistry. Her calm approach
and special individual attention to detail
has helped deal with most common dental
issues in her patients.
Amy Lee, our Oral Therapist and
Hygienist specialises in the overall
maintenance of healthy teeth and gums.
She educates her patients on how to look
The team at Fendalton Dental Surgery
after their oral health, which if not taken
care of can have detrimental effects on
their overall health. The gum disease,
Gingivitis is one of the main reasons
why people lose their teeth and can be
a social stigma with bad breath, while
research also indicates that gum disease
or otherwise called Gingivitis in pregnant
women can mean a higher chance of
premature birth and low birth weight.
Dry mouth or reduced salivary flow,
which is caused by certain medications
that people take can also lead to gum
problems and tooth decay. By visiting the
hygienist regularly, gum problems can be
prevented, and consequently tooth decay
as well as more serious health issues can
be avoided.
Fendalton Dental Surgery will soon add
to its suite of advanced dental equipment
with a state-of-the-art 3D CT scanner,
which will be used to scan jaws, enabling
the dentists to give a better diagnosis of
clients’ dental problems.
The Fendalton Dental Team invites
you and new patients to visit their
practice and experience Expert Care as
being one of their valued patients. Easily
accessible, highly visible and with plenty
of on-site parking, Fendalton Dental
Surgery, on the corner of Glandovey and
Idris road, is open Monday to Friday
8.30am-5pm. Phone 351 1188 for an
appointment, or simply call in.
