Denton Park likely 

choice for mega facility

DENTON PARK is looking to 

be the likely home of the new 

Hornby Library, Service Centre 

and South West Pool mega 

facility. 

During the consultation 

process, the city council found 

submitters favoured Kyle Park and 

Denton Park over Warren Park. 

Kyle Park 

had the most 

support, with 

43 per cent of 

people who 

submitted to 

the city council 

during its 

Vicki Buck 

consultation 

period from 

April 20 to June 9, favouring it as 

the preferred site. 

Denton received five per cent 

less on 38. 

But due to the amount of 

asbestos in the ground at Kyle 

Park, Denton still seems to be 

the likely choice. 

City council staff have recommended 

the Halswell-Hornby- 

Riccarton Community Board 

approve the location at its special 

meeting on Saturday. 

The board will then take its 

recommendation to the city 

council. 

City councillor Vicki Buck 

said because the full report isn’t 

out yet, it is a bit premature to 

comment. 

However, she said the heavier 

you build on a site with asbestos, 

the more it costs to clear. 

“It’s a real weakness for that 

site … the cost of clearing the 

asbestos would mean a lot less 

pools or library space,” Cr Buck 

said. 

Building on Kyle Park would 

mean about a quarter of the 

budget for the facility would be 

spent on clearing asbestos, she 

said. 

Sports clubs from Denton Park 

have been against that area being 

used to build the facility, worrying 

that they will lose field 

space. 

The Hornby Rugby Football 

Club said in its submission that 

the club feels strongly about 

protecting Denton Park. 

“We value this piece of land 

and what it means to the sporting 

people of Hornby … take 

away Denton Park as it is now

per cent of the total park area, 

and wouldn’t necessarily mean 

the clubs would need to relocate.

Minister Tim Macindoe has 

welcomed the start of the $26 

million redevelopment of 

Hornby High School and 

the completion of a $3.5 

million project at Hornby 

Primary School. 

Mr Macindoe visited 

both schools on Friday 

to turn the first sod and

plant a tree to mark the 

completion of the primary 

school. 

“The $26 million redevelopment 

of Hornby High School is 

a significant undertaking with 

90 per cent of the existing school 

buildings being demolished and 

replaced with modern facilities,” 

said Mr Macindoe. 

The redevelopment will 

include: 

• 45 new teaching spaces 

• new administration area 

• new gym 

• new site for technology 

provision, as well as refurbishment 

of the existing 

auditorium and music suites 

•extensive landscaping 

•integrated whare within the 

central courtyard. 

Construction at Hornby High 

School is due for completion in 

mid-2019. 

“Just down the road, Hornby 

Primary School now has a new 

administration building with an 

integrated library facility, staff 

room and a new hall. Landscaping 

at the school will take place 

over the next three months,” 


“Hornby Primary School has 

an impressive track record in 

providing inclusive and positive 

learning opportunities for its 

pupils I know the school and 

contractors have worked hard 

to phase the project to minimise 

disruption to learning.” 

This school is also in the 

process of receiving two 

teaching blocks, which are to 

be relocated from Hornby High 

School. These will be available 

to Hornby Primary School in 

2019. 

“Hornby High and Hornby 

Primary Schools are part of 

the $1.137 billion Christchurch 

Schools Rebuild programme, 

which will rebuild or renew 115 

schools by 2022. 

In total 85 of the 115 projects 

in the CSR programme have either 

been finished, or are under 

way, and we are on track to have 

all projects completed on time,” 


Man and cat 

rescued 

from roof

A MAN attempting to rescue a 

cat from a roof in Woolston ended 

up needing to be rescued himself 

– by the Fire Service. 

Woolston firefighters were 

called to Randolph St at about 

12.45pm last Tuesday after a man 

used a fence to get on the roof to 

rescue a stricken feline, but was 

unable to get down. 

“We went up on the roof without 

a ladder,” a fire communications 

spokesman said. 

“Lucky he took his phone with 

him.” 

Both were rescued unharmed.

Keep hot ash out of 

your wheelie bins

IT WAS timely. 

Evening city crews were called 

to a house in Sewell St, Linwood, 

on July 29, where a wheelie bin, 

close to the house, was found to 

be on fire. 

A recent spate of these type of 

fires in Burnside had resulted in 

an arrest. 

Nearly all these incidents are 

the result of deliberate acts by 

people who get some form of 

satisfaction out of arson. 

So the fire in Linwood appeared 

to indicate another area of 

town was in someone’s sights. 

That was until some questions 

were asked and it was found that 

ash from the fireplace had been 

dumped into the bin on the same 

day. Don’t ever do this. 

Ash can stay hot enough for 

five days to ignite combustibles. It 

should never be placed in a plastic 

container.Like a wheelie bin. 

On July 30, a mother and father 

in Ilam were disturbed from their 

lie-in by a fire crew hammering 

on their door. 

DISPOSAL: Ash from your 

logburner can stay flammable 

for up to five days. 

To their horror, the reason 

turned out to be one of the kids, 

up and about before the parents, 

had placed a prank call on the 

111 system. 

We take these types of incident 

seriously. We call them malicious 

false alarms for a start. 

Our Fire Awareness and 

Intervention programme were 

utilised to work with the child 

so they understand the possible 

consequences. 

Because any time a fire truck is 

responding to such a false alarm 

they are unavailable for a real 

emergency that is perhaps happening 

near them. 

That has the potential for real 

tragedy.

IN 1889, Charlie Chaplin was 

born, the Eiffel Tower opened 

and even though it was still four 

years before women won the 

right to vote in New Zealand, 

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School came 

into being, in Christchurch. 

Every year we celebrate Founders’ 

Day on August 2, the date 

when the vision of a group of 

women was realised; a vision 

to give girls opportunities that, 

until then, were not readily available 

to them. 

Rangi was founded by Miss 

Helen Gibson, after her father, 

Captain Frederick Gibson, built 

a large house with two schoolrooms 

on the corner of Webb St. 

It was administered by her and 

her sisters Mary, Beatrice, Alice, 

Lucy, Ethel, Ruth and Winifred 

for nearly 60 years. 

It was made very clear by the 

sisters that the focus of the school 

was not to turn the students into 

young ladies, who would become 

stay-at-home-mothers, but 

rather strong young women with 

intellect, strength and their own 

viewpoints. 

The Gibson sisters were indeed 

ahead of their time. These years 

identify the first stirrings of the 

‘Independent Woman’. 

Removed from the traditions 

of “home,” girls began to demand 

the privileges of their brothers. 

They wanted equal opportunities; 

they wanted university 

education; they wanted the vote. 

They achieved all of these 

things before their sisters in 

Britain, and frequently against 

the advice and opinions of their 

parents. They could see that the 

liberating force was education. 

The Gibson sisters all helped

in some way with the running of 

the school, in fact they all continued 

with their studies to train 

to become qualified as teachers 

and in doing so, demonstrated 

the importance of knowledge in 

leadership. 

Looking through the history 

of the school, it’s very clear that 

Rangi wasn’t just about academics, 

sports, music; the arts and 

fun also featured which for that 

time in history and for young 

women, shows it was indeed 

ahead of its time. 

I am sure that if the Gibson 

sisters were alive today, they 

would be proud of what has been 

achieved and we all know that 

there is still plenty to do. 

We are stronger for knowing 

and celebrating our past. Where 

we have come is an important 

part of where we are going, and 

Founder’s Day is a wonderful 

way to weave the threads of 

tradition and history into the 

strong and colourful fabric of our 

school community.

Evie’s historical connection to school

GENERATIONS: Evie Laidlaw with her father Robert and 

grandfather John – all descendants of the Gibson family, who 

founded Rangi Ruru Girls’ School. 

EVIE LAIDLAW is 12 and she 

doesn’t know a world without 

mobile phones, Facebook and the 

internet. 

But Evie is part of a legacy that 

dates back to when her school, 

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, opened 

in 1890. 

Through her father Robert 

Laidlaw and grandfather John 

Laidlaw, Evie is a direct descendant 

of the Gibson family who 

opened Rangi Ruru in 1890. 

The school celebrated Founder’s 

Day on Wednesday. 

Three generations of the 

Laidlaw family were at the school 

to mark the occasion and Evie 

was asked to light a candle during 

the service. 

“It was a really special service 

for Evie,” said Robert Laidlaw. 

Captain Frederick Gibson built 

the school and his daughters 

Helen, Mary, Beatrice, Alice, 

Lucy, Ethel, Ruth and Winifred 

ran the school for nearly 60 years. 

The Gibson sisters were Evie’s 

grandfather’s great aunts. 

But just about every woman on 

both sides of Evie’s family have 

worn the Rangi Ruru uniform as 

students at the school, including 

her mother Lucy, both grandmothers 

and a myriad of aunts. 

Her grandfather married his 

wife Judy in St Andrew’s Church, 

which is now on the school’s 

grounds, in 1965.

connection comes out through 

the family tree and is reflected in 

their family values. 

“The school really reflects our 

family traditions and values, so 

it’s really good to see Evie going 

there,” he said. 

At 12, this is Evie’s first year at 

the school. Until now she hasn’t 

understood the importance of 

the family’s historic connection. 

“I think she’s just starting to realise 

the importance of the school 

to the family and she’s making 

the most of it,” he said. 

The family pulled out all the 

stops to get her there. 

“We were fortunate enough to 

have the opportunity to send her 

to the school and she knows it’s a 

privilege,” he said. 

The entire family is very proud, 

especially grandfather John who 

is thrilled his granddaughter will 

be carrying on the traditions of 

the past.

Volleyballer off to US 

St Bede’s final 


THREE YEARS ago Tasmyn 

Fahey hadn’t stepped foot 

on a volleyball court, but on 

Thursday she left for Casper, 

Wyoming, in the United States 

to start a two-year scholarship 

playing the sport she now loves. 

The 19-year-old former 

Burnside High student will play 

for Casper College after being 

accepted earlier this year. 

But she didn’t always have the 

same love for the sport that she 

now has. 

It took a persistent coach 

who eventually tricked her into 

attending a training session to 

get her interested. 

“I have always been tall 

and coach Sam Ryburn really 

wanted me to give it a go. I 

wasn’t interested, but he got 

some of my friends to trick me 

into coming to training and, 

from there, I haven’t looked 

back,” Fahey said. 

The scholarship pays for 

everything, including food, 

accommodation and education. 

“I am just so excited to play 

volleyball over there. I didn’t 

think I would reach this level. 

I want to travel, play volleyball 

and get educated, and this 

allows me to do all three. It is 

amazing,” she said. 

Ryburn said it was a huge 

opportunity for Fahey to get 

into the top level of one of the 

biggest sports in the world.

“The junior colleges give 

you really great exposure

at junior colleges in Florida. 

While Fahey has never been 

to the US, she does have an 

American connection. 

Her father was born in 

Pennsylvania before being 

adopted by a Kiwi family. Her

learn more about the African- 

American culture, which I will 

be able to do at college,” she 

said.

VANILLA AND BAY LEAF 

SYRUP 

Ingredients 

4 Pears, packham 

4 sheets Puff pastry 

2 Tbsp Milk 

1 Egg 

Syrup 

1 Vanilla bean 

2 Bay leaves 

¾ cup Caster sugar 

½ cup White wine 

½ cup Water 

1 Tbsp to serve Cream 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 180 deg C. 

Line a baking tray with baking 

paper. 

Peel the pears, leaving on the 

stalks, then slice a sliver off the 

bottom of each so they sit flat. 

Lay one sheet of pastry on 

a lightly floured bench. Sit a 

pear in the centre and bring the 

pastry up around the pear. 

Trim the excess, then seal to 

ensure the pear is completely 

enclosed. Use the excess to make 

leaf shapes and press onto the 

pastry. Whisk the egg and milk 

together then brush all over the 

pears. 

Bake for approximately 25min 

or until golden. 

Meanwhile, make the syrup by 

putting all the ingredients into 

a saucepan and then bring to a 

boil. 

Stir then let it reduce – this 

should take approximately 

20min. 

Serve the pears hot with the 

syrup poured over and softly 

whipped cream on the 

side. 

VENISON STEAKS WITH 

KUMARA AND PARSNIP 

BAKE 

Ingredients 

50g Butter 

500g Orange kumara, peeled 

500g Parsnips, peeled 

2 cloves Garlic, cut into slivers 

1 Tbsp Fresh thyme 

1 cup Chicken stock, or vegetable 

stock, use more if needed 

4 Venison, steaks 

6 stems Silverbeet, roughly 

chopped 

1 Tbsp to serve Fruit chutney 

Directions 

Heat the oven to 190 deg 

C. Use half of the measured 

butter to grease a medium-sized 

ovenproof baking dish. 

Cut kumara and parsnip into 

3mm thick slices (a mandolin is 

useful here). 

Layer kumara and parsnip 

slices with the garlic, thyme and 

remaining butter into the baking 

dish finishing with kumara slices. 

Carefully pour in the stock and 

season. 

Cover with baking paper and 

foil, place in the oven and bake 

for 25min. Remove paper and 

foil and bake for a further 25min 

until kumara and parsnip are 

tender. Heat a large frying pan 

over a high heat. Rub venison 

steaks with olive oil and season 

with freshly ground black 

pepper. Place in the hot pan 

and pan-fry for 6min, turning 

once for medium-rare venison. 

Transfer to a warmed plate, cover 

loosely with foil then a clean tea 

towel and leave to rest for 5min. 

Meanwhile, steam silverbeet 

until tender, or boil in a little 

lightly salted water. 

Cut kumara and parsnip bake 

into squares and place one on 

each of four warmed dinner 

plates. Divide silverbeet between 

plates and top with a venison 

steak. Finish with a good dollop 

of chutney.

Hydrate to elevate 

We all know drinking water is important, but the 

majority of us simply don’t drink enough even 

though we know it makes us feel great when we 

do. We look at the benefits and motivate you to 

drink more with a few tips on how to make it just 

a little more palatable. 

With over a quarter of Kiwis consuming 

less than two glasses of water a day 

and only 5% drinking more than the 

recommended eight, the message 

obviously hasn’t hit home on the 

importance of hydrating our body. 

A recent survey conducted by 

SodaStream found that Cantabrians are 

particularly guilty when it comes to their 

water intake. 

With 82% drinking less than six 

glasses of water a day, but with over 85% 

admitting they feel healthier when they 

drink more water, something needs to 

be done to bridge the gap in terms of 

what we know to be true and what we’re 

actually doing about it. 

This same survey revealed that although 

41% of us limit how many soft drinks we 

consume due to our concerns over sugar 

content, the same number of people said 

tea or coffee is their number one drink of 

choice. 

Some people even believe that the water 

consumed in their cup of Joe constitutes 

part of their water intake. This is a fallacy. 

As caffeine actually dehydrates us, as 

does alcohol too, it means we need to 

drink even more water to compensate. 

Not so surprisingly the reason we don’t 

drink nearly enough water is that we 

simply forget. Now with apps you can 

download direct to your smart phone, 

there are no more excuses. 

Further studies proved that people 

who had a SodaStream machine in their 

homes were more likely to drink more 

water. 

In fact, the study showed that people 

drank 30% more water. 

For those of us who aren’t used 

to drinking water like it’s going 

out of fashion, there are plenty of ways 

to increase the fun factor while still 

being healthy.

Passchendaele has been a 

byword for the horror of 

the Great War. On October 

12, 1917, 846 young New 

Zealanders were killed in

in Belgium, with many 

more to die over the coming 

days from the wounds 

received on this one day. 

By the end of the day the 

total number of casualties, 

the wounded, the dead and 

the missing was 2740. This 

exhibition has been created 

by the Memorial Museum 

Passchendaele, with funding 

and support from 

the Federal Government 

of Belgium, and is touring 

Australian and New 

Zealand venues in 2017, 

as part of the centenary 

activities to commemorate 

the July to November 1917 

Battle of Passchendaele.

DND SHOWBAND returns to the Hornby Club 

next Saturday 19th August, and by popular 

request will include their ABBA tribute set in the 

programme! 

Christchurch based DnD Showband has been 

delighting audiences across the country with 

their multi-tribute theme shows for an incredible 

ten years. Despite earthquakes, tsunami warnings, 

wild fires, and floods they continue to travel the 

country - although it may take them a little 

longer than in earlier days to reach their 

destination! Coming months sees them with 

show performances in Blenheim, Hawera, 

Waikanae, Levin, Porirua, Ashburton, and

“We’re rather proud that we get repeat 

bookings around the country. The North Island 

especially has a huge pool of amazing talent at its 

disposal. It’s flattering that an act from 

Christchurch is so well received,” said Jo Davern,

In rehearsal mode for next Saturday’s show at 

the Hornby Club, the 6 piece live band has been 

busy fine tuning show content, sorting costumes 

and tightening up moves. 

“It’s not just all about ABBA, we’ve put together 

a great play list guaranteed to get everyone up 

dancing. And for those who prefer to listen and 

watch, our professional tech’s Peter and Amanda 

will be out front running our sound and light 

systems to ensure it sounds and looks wonderful,” 

said Jo.
