Said Mrs Turner: “Our
function is to provide a building
and services for the local
community, and I mean there’s
always been a real need for
good quality clothing at very
reasonable rates,” she said.
Mrs Turner is thankful for
the 28 volunteers who keep the
centre running.
“Our volunteers are mostly
older ladies . . . We have several
ladies who have been here since
the community centre opened
– something like 37 years,” she
said.
Mrs Turner has been the
centre manager for three and
a half years, and relishes the
unpredictability of the work.
“You never know who’s going
to come through the doors . . .
sometimes it’s as simple as needing
directions, but then sometimes
it’s ‘how about I make you
a cup of coffee?’” she said.
Mrs Turner said they once
“decked out” an unemployed
man in new clothes for a job
interview. He then insisted on
giving them the $4 he had on
him for the items, but the volunteers
refused.
Two weeks later the man went
back into the shop and placed
$10 on the counter. When asked
what the money was for, he told
them he got the job and was
paying them back.
