SELWYN TIMES Tuesday May 31 2016 7 News Tree roots new threat to quake-cracked pipes • By Tom Doudney HOMEOWNERS MAY be in for more earthquake-related pain with tree roots the culprit this time. The roots have found their way into small cracks in earthquakedamaged drainage pipes, blocking them as they grow. An EQC spokesman said the problem had been expected to crop up between five and seven years following the earthquakes, based on expert advice. Homeowners have a “grace period” until December 31 when any failure of lateral pipes consistent with earthquake damage would be treated as such by EQC with no further inspection. However, claims made after this time would face a higher burden of proof that the damage was earthquake-related. G N Brewer Drainlayers Ltd co-owner Deane Brewer (above) said now that tree roots had had time to grow into the drains, the problem was becoming more evident. “It only takes a tiny little fibre getting in, it doesn’t take a huge amount. Once that is in it just feeds on the nutrients and goes berserk and you can’t really stop it without repairing the pipe,” he said. The company had two or three drainage crews working on repairing the problem each day and was about six weeks behind on camera inspections due to the volume of requests coming in – about 15 to 20 a day. “Often the drains are under a driveway and we are getting a lot now where the driveways have been replaced but then the roots are getting in [to the drains] and we are having to take up the driveway that has already been replaced.” The problem is also hitting the city council’s wastewater pipes. Infiltration by tree roots had always been a problem for the network but head of three waters and waste John Mackie said it had been made worse by the earthquakes creating more cracks. The city council was now putting more emphasis on root control and monitoring, which it had to fund itself. “The cost of root control this year is around $125,000 and this is likely to increase in the near future as other methods of control are considered such as chemical treatment or root foaming,” Mr Mackie said. •Quake experiences needed, p13 Bus crash engineer named THE ENGINEER charged in relation to a serious bus crash near Arthur’s Pass on New Year’s Eve is James Henry Coakley. The bus belonged to Lincoln company Travlon and police have alleged its brakes failed. It was carrying a tour party of 31 Chinese tourists when the driver lost control and collided with a car travelling up the Otira Gorge before overturning and sliding into roadside barriers separating it from a ravine below. Coakley, 68, of Ohoka, was associated with maintenance of the bus and has been charged with Injuring by Unlawful Act. He has been granted bail and will appear in the Christchurch District Court on June 20. Thirteen of the bus passengers suffered serious injuries requiring hospitalisation and surgery, including fractures and internal injuries. The car passengers involved, a visiting Swiss family of three, also sustained moderate to serious injuries. Tasman Police District crime manager Detective Inspector Paul Borrell said it was “miraculous” and police were thankful no lives were lost as result of the incident.
