14 Tuesday June 14 2016 News CTV News on Plains FM A COLLABORATION between two local news broadcasters has started. Plains FM began live broadcasting the CTV evening news on June 7, running each weekday from 5.30-6pm. Plains FM is a community-run station based at the Ara Institute of Canterbury. CTV is locally-owned by Star Media and has broadcast regional news since 1991. Plains FM manager Nicki Reece said it was a great local collaboration. “For us, it’s a natural fit, because we’re firmly locallybased with programmes by and for the community, and this is a further reflection of what’s going on in a visual way at CTV. “So it’s a really nice crosspollination between two local entities,” Ms Reece said. Star Media editor-in-chief Barry Clarke said the association with Plains FM was another step for CTV as it broadens its reach in the Canterbury region. Plains FM is broadcast on 96.9 FM, and is also live streamed at www.plainsfm.org.nz. CTV News can be watched live or on demand at www.ctv.co.nz PARTNERSHIP: Plains FM will broadcast CTV News between 5.30 and 6pm each weekday. Houses needed for exchange students AN EXCHANGE programme is asking families to open their doors to international students. Student Exchange Australia New Zealand will be sending high school-aged children to Canterbury, from as close as Australia to as far away as Brazil and France. The group is a not-for-profit organisation. This month, it will be receiving students from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The new arrivals plan to live with a host family and attend a local school for three, five or 10 months. Hosting an exchange student allows local families to experience a foreign culture first-hand, be exposed to a new language and pass on parts of their own culture. All students have at least basic levels of English, and would attend a school in the local area. Aboriginal student Jaydah is looking forward to living in New SELWYN TIMES Zealand and is hoping to learn about the Maori culture. Denmark native Caroline, 16, has been to New Zealand before and loved it so much she now wants to live there and experience the culture as an exchange student. In her spare time, Caroline works as a swimming instructor and in a bakery. Nathan, 16, is a French student who enjoys school, tennis, handball and skiing. He loves hiking in nature and is looking forward to discovering New Zealand and meeting new people. But a host family isn’t only doing the student a favour by giving them a roof over their head, as told by the Stuart family. They hosted Danish student Simon for eight months. Victoria Stuart said the experience was fantastic, and that Simon was a role model to their younger children.
