Tiny house at Home Show
THE DOORS will open next
Friday at The Star Home &
Leisure Show.
More than 12,000 people
visited the show last year,
which runs over Friday, Saturday
and Sunday.
The show features the latest
trends and technology for
home building or renovation,
as well as show-only special
deals on everything from spa
pools to campervans.
You can talk directly with
the experts there to get advice
or tips, watch live demonstrations
or take the opportunity
to try new products or technology.
There will also be plenty of
prizes and giveaways on offer,
including a $25,000 central
heating system, thanks to
Central Heating New Zealand.
The show will be held at
Horncastle Arena on July 1-3
from 10am to 5pm, with free
parking available. Entry is $8,
with children under 12 free,
and limited two for one entry

LIVING ON a yacht in Australia
for 14 years with his wife and
three children taught Bevan
Thomas the value of a small home.
It was cheap, easy-to-clean and
made life a lot simpler, he said.
But it wasn’t until he moved
back to Christchurch three years
ago that he really began to
explore the potential of tiny
homes.
He built his first tiny home as a
hobby to see if it was possible, but
he said the interest had taken him
by surprise.
Now he is putting the finishing
touches on his second, and said
he would have shown hundreds of
people through it, including many
who are building tiny homes of
their own.

The secret to his tiny homes was
that they were built as a trailer,
meaning they avoided a lot of
the regulation around things like
minimum ceiling height and the
steepness of stairs.
He has worked a range of jobs
in the past, from sewing machine
mechanic to marine trimmer to
commercial pilot.
The design of the homes was
inspired by his work with boats
and aircraft, he said.
Rather than building the homes
like a house, with a lot of material
making them rigid but also very
heavy, he used aviation monocoque
techniques, which gave the
structure its strength while keeping
it light.
He sold his first tiny home and
the second will be on display at
the The Star Home & Leisure
Show.
