Although these are important, there are also ways of designing your property so it enjoys “passive security”, something that is achieved by having a property that is open to the street so neighbours and passersby can see if there’s anything untoward going on. Having minimal fences or ones that can be seen through and keeping the plantings at a low level means there’s nowhere for a burglar to hide. Some people also plant prickly bushes around the perimeter of their properties to put intruders off. Making it difficult to gain access to the side or rear of your property should also help to dissuade burglars. In this regard, lockable gates are a good idea, especially on driveways, as there’s nothing easier for a burglar than to park their car down your driveway out of sight and quickly load up all your goods. The key to good home security is making it difficult for burglars to gain access and to try to force them to work where they can be seen. That means having and using a good alarm system, outdoor sensor lighting and solid locks.
