14 Tuesday August 9 2016 SPORTS SELWYN TIMES Southbridge win Coleman Shield SOUTHBRIDGE HAS broken a 32-year drought, winning the Luisetti Seeds Ellesmere division 1 Coleman Shield 8-6 in a tight contest with Waihora on Saturday. Running rugby was put aside for a hard fought, mudcaked battle in Lincoln for the title. Southbridge captain and first-five Shannon Donald scored allof his team’s points. He scored the only try of the game and slotted a penalty. He couldn’t have picked a better game to be the hero – Saturday’s final was also his 100th game for Southbridge. “I’m just happy to get the win for the team. The last couple of years, Waihora has beaten us in the Coleman final. Losing to them in the Combined Country final this year as well meant that the win was pretty special,” said Donald. Donald said the team had been preparing for soggy conditions all week. Another final was played on the same pitch at Lincoln before the division 1 game, making conditions some of the worst he had seen. “Our div two side won their final as well so we had a pretty big night of celebrations back at the club. A few of the boys even continued celebrations on Sunday.” Donald and many others who were a part of Saturday’s final will turn their attention to Canterbury Country’s first game this Saturday against Southland Country. •Country team, fixtures page 17 PHOTOS: KAREN CASEY GOING FORWARD: Cameron Sheat holds the ball in one hand as he tries to shake his man.
