Plains FM in public access campaign The Star continues with its monthly profile of Plains FM FOR THE month of August, Plains FM joins 11 other community access radio stations nationwide as part of a lively awareness campaign called The Big Listen. The campaign will showcase their user communities and the radio and online content they produce. The Big Listen officially kicked off last week with a function co-hosted by Plains FM, the Association of Community Access Broadcasters and NZ On Air, with the Minister of Broadcasting Amy Adams giving a speech endorsing the work of the nation’s 12 access radio stations. In her speech, the minister said The Big Listen “is a tremendous initiative to highlight the importance and incredible work done by access radio in New Zealand. What a jewel it is, and what a strong and important role it has for our communities. And if New Zealand is one thing now – it’s diverse. There is no such thing as a typical New Zealander.” CRITICAL ANALYSIS: Horizons expanding at Plains FM. Around the country each access station has fun events and activities planned throughout August. Plains FM is hosting an open day on August 16 from 3-7pm and invites the community to tour the station, meet the staff and broadcasters, and even have a go behind the microphone. “We also want to get out and about into the community with our gorgeous big ears on and just chat to people” said station manager Nicki Reece. “Most people have heard of Plains FM but many don’t quite understand exactly what we do – which is to provide the facilities so everyday people in the community can make programmes, have a voice, share their interests and views, and highlight their activities and concerns as Cantabrians.” Audio profiles of current broadcasters and why they broadcast on Plains FM will be sprinkled throughout the schedule this month. An outside broadcast, cross-cultural and cross-interest conversations will happen on air and lots of images on social media involving broadcasters, staff and supporters, proudly flaunting their big ears around town, are also planned. Research just released by Colmar Brunton to understand and explore how community access radio meets the needs of the community has revealed, among other findings, that it has a strong and credible community brand, and the benefits to the community are inclusion, sharing, connection, belonging, visibility and empowerment. Another exciting development is the announcement that a book about access radio’s 30-year history will be co-written by Dr Brian Pauling and Dr Bronwyn Bettie. They will document the sector’s place politically and socially in New Zealand’s media landscape and provide critical analysis and commentary as to what the future may hold for such a diverse group of citizen-made media facilitators and creators.
