Selwyn Times: September 20, 2016

10 Tuesday

10 Tuesday September 20 2016 SELWYN TIMES Three mayoral candidates are also standing as district councillors, positions they would be able to take up should their bid for the mayoralty be unsuccessful. They are Pat McEvedy in Ellesmere, Debra Hasson in Springs and Bill Woods in Malvern. •More candidates, p12 & p13 Grant Miller: Springs Ward – district councillor As a district councillor for the past three years I have enjoyed the challenge and responsibility of rebuilding and reshaping Selwyn to reflect our change and growth. There are a number of Springs Ward projects I would like to see brought to fruition over the next three years including the Lincoln Town Centre Plan, equitable rating of community centres, planning for a new Prebbleton Community Centre and building of the new combined Community/Sports facility at Rhodes Park, Tai Tapu. I live and farm on the outskirts of Tai Tapu and am a current member of the NZ Institute of Directors. Tony Palmer: Springs Ward – district councillor I’m a journalist/ broadcaster and small business owner. I’ve lived in Tai Tapu for 28 years. I’ve raised my family here and I’m passionate about Selwyn. I want its natural beauty and precious resources, especially water, to be intelligently managed and central to long term planning. Our district has changed rapidly post-earthquakes, accommodating diverse new communities and growing fast. Our ever increasing rates bills suggest a need for such population growth, but also for tighter fiscal scrutiny. I offer myself as an independent candidate with professional communications skills, previous regional council experience. Harry Schat: Ellesmere Ward - district councillor I have farmed in Ellesmere f or 30 years, been chairman of Springston branch of Federated Farmers. I served as chairman of North Canterbury Federated Farmers dairy section for three years while being vice president of provincial, and then served three years as North Canterbury provincial president. I have been working with ECan on the farming focus group for environmental sustainability. On serving on these committees I believe I have the ability to work with people from all walks of life, hear their concerns and bring them to the council table. Kerry Pauling: Malvern Ward - district councillor and community board member for the Tawera subdivision I am standing for council having completed three years on the Malvern Community Board. Taking the next step will enable me to be more effective at keeping Malvern issues in front of council and getting resolutions. Involvement in the community has been a lifetime commitment. Current involvement includes Kowai Pass Domain Board, Malvern Collie Club, President Canterbury Dog Trial Association, Malvern A&P association and Assistant coach DRFC A diverse background of working as a shearer, police officer, contractor and farmer brings a balanced common sense approach. Elections 16 Bob Mugford: Malvern Ward – district councillor and community board member for the Tawera subdivision Bob was awarded a community Service award, for the Glentunnel Hall rebuild committee. His current involvement with our community is deputy chairman of the Malvern Community Board, deputy chairman of Malvern St John Area Committee, chairman of Lake Coleridge Township Committee, chairman of Glentunnel Hall Committee and is on the committees of Friends of the Darfield Hospital, Glenroy Hall, Whitecliffs Township and Glentunnel Township. Bob is friendly and approachable and is also at hand to hear your community concerns. Jenny Gallagher: Malvern Ward – community board member for the Hawkins subdivision I have lived in Kirwee for 44 years and been chairwoman of Malvern Community Board for six years, seeing McHugh’s Plantation develop into a Recreation Reserve and a cycleway from Coalgate to Glentunnel. My Community involvement includes Kirwee Reserve, Kirwee Township, Darfield Reserve, Kimberley Reserve, Hororata Township, Hororata Reserve, Courtenay Reserve, Malvern Lions, Courtenay A&P and Kirwee Community Response. I am keen to promote the establishment of a Men’s Shed and cycleway/walkways between townships. Judith Pascoe: Malvern Ward – community board member for the Hawkins subdivision I am currently a member of the Malvern Community Board and look forward to representing you again for the next three years. I am very familiar with council governance processes, budgeting and project management. Involvement in the community in the past has included Kirwee School Board of Trustees, Darfield High School PTA and the Darfield Township Committee. I am a Trustee of the Malvern Health and Community Welfare Trust and a Justice of the Peace. I am a strong advocate for the role of community boards and community committees.
