A FOUR-DAY walk along the
Selwyn/Waikirikiri River which
took place last month to raise
awareness of water quality issues
has been turned into a short
documentary.
And that documentary may
become part of a longer film
documenting a series of similar
walks planned for other Canterbury
rivers next year.
Gaylene Barnes’ 15min film is
currently part of the Waterlife
exhibition at Lincoln’s Down by
the Liffey Gallery. The exhibition
features work by artists and
scientists, several of who were
involved in the Walk For Water,
on the theme of water quality.
Ms Barnes said she had been
invited to film the walk by its
organisers.
“When I went to the
Selwyn River and filmed it, I was
shocked,” she said.
“I had been up to the top of the
Selwyn River two or three years
ago, had a nice picnic there, wandered
in the water – I wouldn’t
do that today, it’s a mess.”
Ms Barnes and fellow film
LONG HAUL: Participants in the Walk For Water traversing the Selwyn/Waikirikiri River to raise
awareness of water quality issues last month.
maker Kathleen Gallagher
are planning to film a hikoi in
March and April, jointly organised
by a number of community
groups, which will involve people
walking along the course of
several Canterbury rivers including
the Selwyn/Waikirikiri River
again.
The other rivers will include
the Heathcote and the Avon
rivers in Christchurch; the
Orari, Opihi and Waitaki rivers
in South Canterbury and the
Waimakariri and Hurunui rivers
in North Canterbury.
Ms Barnes and Ms Gallagher
are looking for funding to make
a film of the hikoi.
Ms Barnes’ family farm is in
the Rakaia area and she said water
issues were close to her heart.
“It’s something I’m extremely
concerned about. I take a very
close interest in what’s going
on with the expanding dairy
farming on the plains and every
time I travel up there, there has
been more irrigators go up, more
hedges come down, more water
pipes trawling across the plains,”
she said.
“Although I am from a farming
background and my family
are farmers and I understand
how important water is for
growing crops, I do see that the
balance is actually being tipped a
little bit and it’s not in favour of
the environment.”
