Selwyn Times: October 25, 2016

20 TUESDAY OCTOBER 25 2016 SELWYN TIMES Get to know new friends in your neighbourhood Community committee elections Elections for community, hall and reserve committees take place between November and February. If you have a couple of hours available each month, then you could become a member of your local community committee and be part of making decisions on local parks, playgrounds, town beautification, community centres and other issues that affect your area. This summer Selwyn District Council’s mobile barbeque will be visiting 20 different locations giving you a chance to get to know your neighbours. Meet your street is a fun, informal event at a local reserve with a free sausage sizzle. It’s a chance to meet new people in your neighbourhood, enjoy some music and games for the kids, while you relax and chat to your new friends! Check our Facebook page ‘Meet Your Street Selwyn’ for event information, photos and wet weather postponement details. Meet your Street sessions happening before Christmas are listed below. All sessions are on Tuesdays from 5.30-7pm: · 1 November – Beaumont Drive Reserve, Rolleston · 8 November – Franklin Crescent Reserve, Lincoln · 15 November – Highworth Crescent, Faringdon, Rolleston · 22 November – Coleman Place, Darfield · 29 November – Quartz Drive Reserve, Rolleston · 6 December – Farthing Drive Reserve, Prebbleton · 13 December – Reserve between Coutts Lane and Wilfield Drive, West Melton · 20 December – Clausen Avenue Reserve, Leeston The Council also has small grants of up to $50 available which you can apply for if you would like to host your own neighbourhood ‘Meet Your Street’ event. For more information about this funding please visit Meet your Mayor – Sam Broughton What do you like about the area you represent? I love Selwyn. The people here are cool. We know one another, we welcome new comers, we understand the land and weather, we care for our neighbours, we create cool spaces to meet, we celebrate together and we comfort one another. We have been doing this for generations and I trust for generations to come. One of the other great things is we are close to rivers, mountains, sea, open spaces, to Christchurch, and to people. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? In my spare time I enjoy relaxing with my wife Liz, our dog Lev and friends. I enjoy watching or playing sports, although I should do more playing. I particularly enjoy cricket, football and lawn bowls. I play the guitar, ride my motorbike and I enjoy 4WD trips with friends. I don’t particularly like hokey pokey ice cream. How would you describe yourself? I would describe myself as a man who likes to help others, laugh together, and provide a way to get things done. I have a keen sense for justice and understanding others points of view. I love to see peace in the world. Peace within ourselves, between each other, peace with the environment and peace with our Creator. Check fires are fully extinguished An open fire season is currently in place in Selwyn’s rural plains area. While outdoor fires may be lit there are a number of fire safety guidelines that must be met. Before you light a fire please visit to check the rules. Rainfall has been low over winter, and soil moisture levels are lower than normal in our district. Nor’ west winds, along with drying vegetation can make also make it easy for old fires to reignite or for fires which are burning to spread. Please check carefully that any previously lit fires are out. Look underneath the fire embers to see if it is fully out and douse thoroughly with water if needed. No burning is allowed at night or when moderate or strong winds are occurring or forecast so please check the weather forecast carefully. Fires also need an adequate fire break and must be constantly supervised. Under ECAN air rules, to prevent smoke pollution only dry vegetation cut at least six weeks prior may be burned. In hill and high country areas a permit is required for outdoor fires. Outdoor fires are not allowed in residential areas under ECAN rules, except for barbeques.
