Kea (Nestor Notabilis) 32 Tuesday October 25 2016 MY PRIDE & JOY SELWYN TIMES Racing on grass If wanting to compete in a motor sport yet shy about incurring the expense you might try the growing sport of grass karting. “Grass karting is for people who want a budget motor racing sport,” explains Greg Hornsby, Secretary and Media Liaison of the Christchurch Grass Kart Club. The club has been signing up five to seven new members each month, varying in age from five to seventy five. “Grass karting is a sport where family members get involved, having a turn at racing,” adds Greg. An example is top New Zealand rally driver Hayden Paddon, who is currently racing in the World Rally Championship in Europe. He began grass karting when he was six years old. Currently, there are six active clubs around New Zealand. Most are in the South Island, in Ashburton, Timaru, Kaikoura and Nelson. A new club has also recently been started in Gisborne. Christchurch is the largest club with over two hundred members. Grass Karts are raced year round and other than the club championships, racing is purely social. While members take races seriously, endeavouring to beat one another, it is all in good fun making the meets social family days where different combinations, such as mothers and sons or fathers and daughters race against each other. The traditional grass kart which was a home built kart with a lawnmower engine has evolved and ninety nine percent are now ex track racing carts with motorcycle engines costing on average between $2,000 and $4,000. Most have a Lifan motor, which is an economic and reliable Chinese mass produced engine. It means that nonmechanically minded and those keen on tinkering with engines, can compete on an equal basis. The A grade karts have 250-500cc engines with the capability of reaching speeds in excess of one hundred kilometres an hour while travelling sideways on grass, requiring racers to have skill and trust in their fellow competitors. Grass karting is a relatively safe motor sport with the club’s rules focussing on three principles: safety, affordability and fun. Therefore, while accidents occur, injuries are rare especially as all drivers wear full safety gear. “We want people to have a good time and go home in one piece with their karts undamaged,” says Greg who adds that the turnout for club meets is between ninety and one hundred racers. The Christchurch club is based at Ohoka where it has the generous use of farm land on which to race. Meets are the first Sunday of every month; alternating with those of the other Canterbury clubs so members can race every weekend should they choose to travel between the clubs. Club championships for the club will be held on Sunday, 6th November at Edmunds Road, Ohoka. Anyone interested in the sport is welcome to attend, with no charge for spectators. They can handle all makes and models of vehicle from the small runabout, larger family SUV, motor home through to small commercial vehicles. Whether you need a warrant of fitness, vehicle servicing and repairs, auto electrical diagnostics or engine overhauls – the teams at Jones Road Auto and Selwyn Auto can deal with it. They are also Motor Trade Association (MTA) assured which gives customers added protection. Being a member of the MTA means they have to uphold a high standard of workmanship and service which also comes with warranties on the work they do. New to Selwyn Auto is a motorcycle repair service. These are carried out by a specialist motorcycle mechanic who can also work on farm bikes (two and four wheelers) and can repair any make or model; a service that is rare in Selwyn. Both workshops are also accredited to service fleet vehicles through some of the main fleet leasing companies. For your convenience there are courtesy cars available and Jones Road Auto also works in with a neighbouring car grooming business, so you can book your vehicle in for repairs or a service as well as a car groom. Lisa and Nigel purchased Jones Road Auto four years ago and in February this year, took over Selwyn Auto in Springston. Jones Road Auto also works in with a neighbouring car grooming business, so you can book your vehicle in for repairs or a service as well as a car groom. Since then, the businesses have grown considerably due to the top workmanship they provide for their customers. They are also looking at ways to exceed their already high standards and provide more for their customers. This has meant the installation of new equipment and hoists in both workshops as well as the ongoing training of staff so they can use the latest technology available. While the businesses are operated as separate entities, the Flecks share staff and resources. This ensures a quick turnaround of customers’ vehicles and access to a broader range of expertise. This year, Nigel and Lisa have employed more staff. They now have fourteen locals working across the two businesses and are hoping to employ more workers at their Selwyn branch next year. Currently, they have a pre-apprentice at Jones Road and also hope to employ an apprentice at Selwyn Auto next year. In addition to looking after the motoring needs of locals and providing employment opportunities, The Flecks provide on-going sponsorship to local schools and sports clubs. “It’s nice to give back to the community,” explains Lisa. You will find Jones Road Auto at 851 Jones Road in Rolleston and Selwyn Auto at 132 Leeston Road (the Springston end). Their friendly staff will be only too happy to help you sort out your motor vehicle repair and servicing needs.
