Janine Thomson, of Darfield, heads around different plant growers and gardens, picking up flowers to gift to sick patients around the city. When Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton was asked for a donation of plants, the team led by activity organiser Amy Maclennan, rallied together to build two raised garden beds recently. This was so Ms Thomson could grow her own flowers to build posies for the community. “At the moment we are using donated flowers which is amazing and I am very grateful for those flowers. But we also like to incorporate our own flowers we grow ourselves,” she said. The Flower Garden New Zealand charity delivers about 35 posies once a week to places including Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch Women’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House South Island. Her passion for helping others through flowers was ignited after she had a car accident when she was 17. “It did actually stick to me GENEROUS: The Flower Garden New Zealand charity member Janine Thomson (centre) built a raised flower bed recently with Bunnings Warehouse Riccarton team members Morgan Walker (left), Geoff Halliwell and Mary Wilkins. just how bad I felt in hospital and I remember thinking this is horrible being sick . . . my best friend came in with an armful or orchids and it just blew me away,” she said. Ms Thomson said if she has any flowers left over she will give them to the staff of hospitals or retirement homes. “The nurses really cheered me up, that is why I like to give back to the nurses. It completely changed my whole visit. It perked me up,” she said. Other companies to have donated plants to the charity garden includes Southern Woods Nursery, South Pacific Roses and Pearsons Coal and Garden Supplies. “I had to put my thinking cap on . . . the worse they can say is no and quite a few of them said yes,” she said. The charity is looking for funding to support the running of the organisation. •To support The Flower Garden NZ charity go to https://givealittle.co.nz/org/ theflowergarden Success for bodybuilding couple •From page 1 Before this year he had also had four years off competing – returning to the fold while helping his wife train. Mr Hibbs credited the couple’s healthy lifestyle for allowing them to remain competitive at the top level into their 40s. “We are pretty much organic sort of eaters, we don’t use sports supplements, so it’s a lifestyle thing I suppose,” he said. Mrs Hibbs said motivation and self-discipline was also key to their success. Mr Hibbs said his wife’s achievement was “super impressive” after so long out of competition. The couple first met 18 years ago while they were working at the same gym and Mrs Hibbs was helping out behind the scenes at a bodybuilding competition Mr Hibbs was competing in. Mr Hibbs runs a health and wellness business called Balanced Health Ltd and Mrs Hibbs is a manager with the Christchurch City Council’s sport and recreation unit.
