SELWYN TIMES Tuesday November 1 2016 21 Ceramic artist makes awards finals A LEESTON ceramic artist has earned a sought-after finalist place in the national Portage Ceramic Awards. Yi-Ming Lin was born in Taiwan, immigrated to New Zealand in 1994 and studied for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Otago Polytechnic. He said he felt lucky and happy that his ‘Flowery Teapot Set’ work had been selected as a finalist. “The teapot is built in stages, starting as a pot and ending up as a pot made of flowers so each flower can show its own life,” Mr Lin said. “The contrast between rock and flowers, brown and blue, organic looking outside and smooth inside can showcase the variety in the work.” He is one of 52 finalists selected from 200 entries from around the country. The winner of the Premier Portage Ceramic Award, which carries a prize of $15,000, will be announced at a ceremony held at Te Uru on November 10. The winner of a scholarship award at the Peters Valley School of Craft in New Jersey, United States, and up to three merit awards totalling $3000 will also be announced at the ceremony. This year’s judge, internationally-recognised Australian ceramicist and teacher Janet DeBoos, said she was impressed with the skill and dedication to craft among the finalists. The finalist’s works will be exhibited at Te Uru in Titirangi from November 11 to February 5. And in case anyone is wondering – Mr Lin’s teapot set is not intended to actually be used for tea service. ACHIEVERS ATTENTION TO DETAIL: Yi-Ming Lin creating one of his ceramic art works.
