Hororata Highland Games
promises a unique experience
The Hororata Highland Games is a
Scottish Festival with a Kiwi twist. While
the colourful and unique competitions are
the centre of the event, surrounding these
is a huge festival which is an attraction in
itself.
“This year we have introduced the
Duncan Cotterill Stage which will see
some great acts like the Southern Celtic
Fiddle Orchestra and Ma Bell and The
Celtic Connection entertain. The SCA
Medieval actors will be back with their
mock battles and craft demonstrations,”
explained Stalls Convenor, Dee Innes.
The Taste of Scotland is a wonderful
experience with food, wine,

Scottish wares, tartan and, of course,
Haggis to enjoy. In Clan Lane the
Canterbury Scottish Heritage Council
hosts 18 Clans who enjoy talking to
people about their lineage and providing
Scottish entertainment with Willie
MacArthur performing throughout the
day.
“This year the Hororata Whisky has
three new labels which will be launched
at the Games. Last year’s whisky sold out
so make sure you find the Whisky Galore
stand early. The Hororata Community
Trust is also introducing new Hororata
Tartan Cushions which will be available
at a special introductory price in Taste of
Scotland.
The legendary Hororata Pie will be
back as well as an amazing selection of
local and international food stalls ranging
from traditional festival food to different
healthy options, making choosing what to
have the hardest part about lunch.”
With over 100 stalls at the event there
is a huge array of sites offering everything
from wooden furniture, clothing, toys,
jewellery, produce, gifts, homeware and
much more. The Star Media Company
will have a stall with some great activities
as well as the chance for people to have
fun in their photobooth, with one of the
photos to be selected for the front page of
the next edition of the Selwyn Times.
“Be prepared for a full day out when
you come to the Hororata Highland
Games and remember you don’t have to
be Scottish to enjoy the day,” concluded
Dee.
The Hororata Highland Games is on
the 5th of November at the Hororata
Domain. Gates open at 9am and the event
concludes at 4pm with the Mass Bands
march past and prize giving. The event
goes ahead wet or fine. A full programme
