4 Tuesday November 8 2016 SELWYN TIMES HORORATA HIGHLAND GAMES Record crowd contributes to success A RECORD crowd of 10,000 people took in the bonnie sights and sounds, which included plenty of tartan and bagpipes, at the sixth annual Hororata Highland Games on Saturday. Jacko Gill wasn’t the only one to set a record in the field, with his 28m throw in the hammer toss. Luke Reynolds set a new field record in the 16lb sheaf with a toss of 30ft and equalled the 56lb weight over bar record with 14ft. For the first time a woman, Fiona Bond of Christchurch, won the pie-eating competition with a time of 46.41sec. The Gough CAT Oceania Heavyweight Championship was won by Australian athlete Luke Reynolds, with Jacko Gill coming second in his first highland games competition. Gill said the size of the event had blown him away and he couldn’t wait to compete at future events. “I have never competed in an athletic event with such a huge crowd [apart from] an event like the Olympics or Commonwealth Games,” he said. The event attracted nearly 100 highland dancers – one of the biggest competitions in New Zealand, 11 pipe bands, 54 solo pipers and drummers, 12 tug o’ war teams, four highland spin teams, while 30 people took aim at the small bore shooting championship and 12 amateur men and women heavy athletes tossed, threw and strained for the Hororata Highland Games heavy championship. Games chieftain Kyle Warren wowed the crowd with a contemporary performance on his bagpipes of We Will Rock You to rev the competitors up before the Hororata Stones competition. Mr Warren said it was one of the best highland games he had been to in the world. Event manager Cindy Driscoll said the games’ success would not have been possible without the Clan Hororata volunteers. “We had a record number of people volunteering at the event this year and they should all be extremely proud,” Mrs Driscoll said. The Selwyn Times may have also got in on the record setting action with an event it staged at the games where people were invited to write what they loved about Canterbury on a post-it note and stick it to a car. It is believed the New Zealand record for the most number of post-it notes with an individual message on a car may have been set, although the final count is yet to be made.
