The school opened in January, 1867, only three years after the national education board was formed, with 23 pupils. Principal Andrew Barker said celebrating the school’s milestone was exciting. “The school has been a big part of the community over that time and although the township has increased, it has still very much got its rural flavour,” he said. The school had been based at several different sites over its history. SELWYN TIMES Tuesday November 22 2016 19 No Z Energy or BK for Rolleston • By Tom Doudney Mark Alexander RUMOURS OF a new petrol station and fast food joint in Rolleston have had cold water poured on them by the companies involved. Rumours have been circulating on social media that Z Energy and Burger King planned to open on a shared site in the town. Z Energy spokeswoman Georgina Ball said the company would like to have a site in Rolleston but at this stage nothing was planned. “It’s a growing area and the roading changes will make it a good stopping place for people heading to and from Christchurch, but at this stage, we have no plans to build one,” she said. “We are, however, always looking for suitable places to build service stations and a Rolleston site could happen if we can find the right place to build and get approval.” Burger King general manager of marketing James NOT YET: A joint Z Energy and Burger King site rumoured to be built in Rolleston won’t be going ahead at this stage. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN Woodbridge said there were “no details to share as we have not made any commitment to opening in Rolleston.” A district council spokeswoman said no resource consent application had been received for either a Z Energy or a Burger King in Rolleston. District councillor Mark Alexander said the town’s only current petrol station, Rolleston BP on State Highway 1, could sometimes be busy but it usually wasn’t too bad. It would be a commercial decision if another operator wanted to set up in the town, he said. “There is a business opportunity there but it is up to someone to grasp that,” he said. A Caltex diesel truck stop on Hoskyns Rd was opened last year. Rolleston resident Lynley Shaw said it would be nice to have a petrol station on the other side of town but she appreciated that would come down to the business case for petrol companies. “I’d much rather have one that’s really good than two that are struggling,” she said. “I do think there is enough traffic that goes past . . . but to be fair, other than long weekends, I don’t have to wait too long [at the BP].” HANMER SPRINGS LOVELY 2 BEDROOM COTTAGE Thyme Cottage is an awesome place to take time out!! • Queen bed in 1st bedroom • 2 x single beds in 2nd bedroom • Fold out couch in lounge • Sky TV • Stereo and DVD • Flat screen tv 32” • Heat pump • New kitchen • Dishwasher • Coffee machine • Slow cooker $ 120 .00 per night *mid week rates available (not during holiday periods) • Extremely well equipped kitchen • Portacot, highchair & baby bath • Toys and games for children • Front fully fenced • Private BBQ area • Reserve beside the house • About 10 minutes walk from pools and restaurants • 5 minutes walk to the Golf Course We have our property managed with Hanmer Holiday Homes Book via internet www.hanmerholidayhomes.co.nz or index search: 11 Dorset Street, Hanmer or phone 03 315 7336 to make a booking.
