SELWYN TIMES Tuesday November 22 2016 21 SPORTS HAPPY FAMILY: Garry Jones, with his children Fraser and Kendall, collected more than $1000 worth of prizes from Selwyn Athletic Club president Gail Krsinic (right) recently after winning the club’s Mega Raffle. Raffle tickets were sold on club nights and at other events, such as the Rolleston fireworks night, to raise money for an all-weather long jump run up at Brookside Park. The prizes, including an HD television, Laser Electrical voucher, women’s running jacket, blanket and a variety of toys, were donated by The Warehouse South Island Distribution Centre and Laser Electrical. New sports club will promote hockey • By Tom Doudney A NEW sports club has been set up to foster hockey in eastern Selwyn. While hockey would initially be the main focus of the Waikirikiri Sport club, it is intended to eventually include other sports which are currently not widely available in Selwyn. Waikirikiri Sport president Lyndal Marshall (right) said the club intended to enter junior hockey teams up to under-13 level into next year’s Canterbury Hockey winter competition. It would also offer a range of programmes to develop coaches and provide support to high school hockey teams playing in Christchurch. “Hockey has been the driving force to get it going, but because there is such a demand for sports out here, we have set up the club in such a way that other sports can come on board in the future and give people access to other sports that aren’t currently out here,” she said. The district already has the Malvern Hockey Association, based in Darfield, and Lincoln High School has its own hockey teams, and some residents in eastern areas play for Christchurch clubs. Eastern Selwyn has been short of facilities for players to practice on but the district council, with support from Waikirikiri Sport, will put in a half hockey turf at Rolleston’s Foster Park by early next year. This will be able to host junior hockey games and practice sessions for senior players. Mrs Marshall said the club aimed to bring the game to Selwyn residents who might not otherwise play hockey. “It will now become a feasible option for locals because the practice facilities are right here,” Mrs Marshall said. The club will work with Lincoln High School, Lincoln University and the yet-to-open Rolleston College. Lincoln High School head of sport Craig Crawford said starting a new club from scratch presented some exciting opportunities. “From my school’s point of view, we are interested in seeing the game grow and be supported by the club,” Mr Crawford said. •Anyone interested in finding out more about the club can email Canterbury and the First World War Experience the personal stories of Cantabrians at home and on the front line fabric house making European fabric affordable Wholesale prices direct to the public Free exhibition now open at Darfield Library & Service Centre Brought to you by 140 Colombo Street Beckenham, Christchurch Mon-Fri: 9am-5pm, Sat: 10am-4pm Phone (03) 365 0172
