SELWYN TIMES Fashion Dig out your 80s Annabelle Dick looks at this year’s fashion trends THINK GRACE Jones, think Madonna, think Prince. The 80s are back with a vengeance, whether you like it or not. This year will see the comeback of chic 80s wear – even designer Marc Jacobs recently held an exclusive party aptlythemed Grace Jones “Chic 80s” in ode to the 2017 trend. That coincided nicely with his resort ‘17 collection that features ruffles galore and coats more embellished than a Bowie number. Even reality TV star and fashion icon Kim Kardashian is up with the play – she was seen sporting an 80s shoulderpad blazer only last week. FUN: Try playing with chunky belts and embroided clothing for a touch of the 80s trend. SELWYN TIMES Tuesday January 17 2017 21 wardrobe – it’s back in style FRIVOLOUS: Sleeves will come in all shapes and sizes this year – try a bell sleeve for a chic 80s look. PHOTO: NINA RICCI POP: Make a statement by experimenting with colour and texture. PHOTO: MARC JACOBS EYE-CATCHING: This year’s Pantone colour palette is light, bright and playful. Several designers and fashion forecasters have said 2017 is the year of frivolity. Bell sleeves, flared trousers and ruffled tops are all expected to make a strong feature on this year’s fashion scene. This year’s Pantone Fashion Colour Report, which features the top 10 shades seen on the runway, back up those predictions. The palette is bright and vivid – just like the 80s. In 2016, off-shoulder dresses topped the list of women’s best performing fashion trends. Along with flounces and Bardot styles, they warmed women up to what’s going to be an even bigger year for sleeve shapes. Leg-of-mutton, flared, bell, extra-long and puffed are definitely styles worth experimenting with. Power dressing is also back in fashion too so incorporate the trend into your work wardrobe by pulling out the shoulder pad blazer and pairing it with tailored slacks or wide-leg trousers. In a day and age where less is more, people have been moving towards a minimalistic look with classic tailoring, muted colours and high-quality fabrics. The 80s, however, were an era for bright colours, oversized clothes and accessorised outfits due to the pop culture boom. But don’t let the bold 80s trend ruffle you the wrong way, find ways to adapt certain pieces instead of jumping in head first into the trend – no one wants to look like they’ve just stepped out of a Girls Just Want To Have Fun video clip. Pair a bell-sleeved blouse with boyfriend jeans as a subtle nod to the 80s, or try a faux fur coat on those chilly days. Consider flared trousers, wide belts, embellished and embroided jackets and metallics too. They’re expected to be big on the catwalk and streets in 2017. After seasons of body-con dresses, cut-out wear and athleisure, this year you can relax. Be playful with your outfits, mix and match colours and textures, but most importantly, dress in what makes you feel good. ‘Famous for their roasts!’ RESTAURANT & CAFÉ Kid's SPECIAL Two courses Seniors SPECIAL Two courses Varicose Vein Treatment Non-surgical Vein Laser Treatments available Free Assessment $10 We are family friendly.
