20 Tuesday January 31 2017 SELWYN TIMES Selwyn beaming with national talent • By Tom Doudney A SELWYN cricket club is punching above its weight at Canterbury representative level. Leeston Southbridge has had eight players named in Canterbury and New Zealand representative teams over the past several weeks. Two of those players, Ben Donkers and Harry Chamberlain, have been with the club since the age of five. Donkers has made the New Zealand under-18 and Canterbury under-19 one-day teams, while Chamberlain has made the Canterbury one-day side after initially being selected for the Canterbury A and Canterbury Country Hawke Cup sides. Toby Doyle, Mitch Ross, Harrison Cox, Tim Gruitjers and Morgan Jeffery all made the Canterbury Country Hawke Cup team, while Ben Chamberlain, younger brother of Harry Chamberlain, made the Canterbury under-19 one-day team. For Gruitjers, Cox and Jeffery, it was the first time they had made the Canterbury Country side. Gruitjers plays international cricket for the Netherlands but plays in New Zealand during their off season. Leeston Southbridge president Blair Franklin said having eight players selected for representative teams was a great achievement for a small club, and “even more pleasing, considering that both (Donkers and Chamberlain) have been with the club since the age of 5-years-old.” NATIONAL SELECTION: Leeston Southbridge cricketer Ben Donkers (right), with fellow New Zealand age group representative Mitchell Hay. Donkers, an all-rounder who bats in the middle order and bowls brisk medium pace, has had an outstanding season, captaining both the Christchurch Boys’ High School first XI to the national secondary schools’ title and Canterbury at the national under-19 tournament. Franklin said Donkers’ natural athleticism and versatility in the field was a huge advantage. “He would be one of the best fielders in the game at this age level. He is a natural leader and has maturity and knowledge well beyond his years,” he said. Franklin said Chamberlain had been involved in Canterbury age group programmes for the last six or seven years and had developed into a hard-hitting top order batsman. “His promotion to the Canterbury men’s side was never a matter of if but when,” he said. “Like all young, talented sportspeople, they sometimes just need an opportunity to show their talents and (Chamberlain) now has the platform to showcase his abilities.” •More sport, page 23 SPORTS SWINGING HARD: Leeston Southbridge batsman Harry Chamberlain has made the Canterbury one-day squad. PHOTO: KAREN CASEY Leeston Southbridge fight back on first day against Southbrook A LEESTON Southbridge side decimated by the loss of six players on representative duty was skittled for just 51 by Southbrook in the second round of the CRV Ambreed Country Premier two-day cricket competition. At Southbrook Park, the home side rattled through the depleted line-up, with pace duo Ben Rayner and Fergus Fairbairn doing the damage. In reply, Southbrook were in trouble at 27/5 before skipper Matt Brine (37), Sam Ermerins (13) and an unbeaten 35 from Darryn Boyle steadied the ship. Southbrook declared at 109/9, with a handy lead of 58 runs. Leeston Southbridge fought hard in the second innings, erasing the deficit and making their way to 74/2 at stumps – with a lead of 16 going into the final day next weekend. Meanwhile, Sefton put themselves in a commanding position on day one of their match against Lincoln. Batting first, the Seals received handy contributions from Patrick Croker, Ollie Bragg, Matt Rowe and top scorer Al Chamberlain who came up from the senior team. They posted 246/9 before declaring at the 55 over mark. After Lincoln lost early wickets, an unbroken 82-run partnership between Jamie Chapman and Hugh Paterson restored the match to an even contest with the team reaching 135/5 at the close of play.
