COMPUTING FOR FREE 5 essential skills for the digital workplace The skill-set for anyone who works in an office environment has changed dramatically in the past 10 years and it continues to change at a rapid pace. Ara Head of Computing Dr Nathan Rountree identifies the essential skills people need to thrive in the digital workplace. ESSENTIAL SKILL #1: ADAPTABILITY TO A RANGE OF DIGITAL TOOLS General digital confidence and competence is now essential for employment and career progression. Gone are the days of just training to use select computer programs, instead people need to be able to find and use the right digital tools to complete a variety of tasks. ESSENTIAL SKILL #2: IT COMMUNICATION People need to understand enough about IT to communicate effectively with IT support in their organisation, or as part of running their own small business. An increased knowledge of the IT environment results in better communication, better functioning of teams and better business results. ESSENTIAL SKILL #3: ELECTRONIC FILING CAPABILITY It is now an expectation that all staff in an organisation, from business administrators to managers, can make decisions about file storage. Everyone needs to have the ability to organise an electronic filing system that many other people are going to use, with differing levels of access. ESSENTIAL SKILL #4: UNDERSTANDING TECHNOLOGY FOR BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT There are now endless digital tools that can help us do better, faster and more efficient business. It’s important that people are aware of how new technologies can be used to benefit them and their organisation. ESSENTIAL SKILL #5: KNOWING HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF DATA Today almost all organisations are using data to make better decisions and there is a strong expectation that everyone in a business can look at, process and understand data. The most common way data is presented is in a spreadsheet and these have to be read by people who understand both data and spreadsheets. Computing For Free can help support you in acquiring these skills so you can be more effective in the workplace. ara.ac.nz KNOWLEDGE AT WORK CHRISTCHURCH | ASHBURTON | TIMARU | OAMARU | ONLINE
