SELWYN TIMES Tuesday February 14 2017 25 Bowls champion of champions • By Karolyn Boon DUNSANDEL’S Chris Dalzell and Leeston’s Anne Chapman have gone from champions to champions of champions. To earn a Champion of Champions title in the Ellesmere bowls sub centre you have to win your club championship and then take on the winners from other clubs in the area. For the juniors, this is often the first real test for them and, although there are only seven clubs in Ellesmere, there have often been many games played and won at club level to get to be a champion. You are a junior bowler for the first five years in a club. It was a cracker of a day for the juniors’ event, held at Southbridge, which will host all Champion of Champions events this year. In the men’s competition, there were four club champions which entered and in the first game, Southbridge’s Jo Smith played Keith Hanham from Akaroa. It was a slow start for Smith who was down 1-10 and 4-15 before relaxing and settling into the game only to go down 19-21. In the other game, Dalzell had a comfortable win over first-year bowler Ken Chapman, of Leeston, 21-8. The final was then between Dalzell and Hanham, a second year bowler. Dalzell, a finalist in last year’s championships, displayed his four years’ experience on the green. That didn’t stop Hanham from pushing him, as the shot changed four times with excellent draw bowls, but it was Dalzell’s driving ability that won that end. Dalzell won 21-6. This may have been the first year that two families played each other in the men’s and women’s competitions, which featured the Dalzell siblings and husband and wife Anne and Ken Chapman. Alana Dalzell, of Dunsandel, was a contender in the women’s match coming up against Chapman, of Leeston. Dalzell was slow to start in what was to be a spectacle of a game. Dalzell clawed her way into the game and, like Smith in the men’s, settled into things. However, it was Chapman with a year’s experience over Dalzell that managed to win it, 21-20. Chapman played Lincoln’s Pam Greenside in the final, which was a little one-sided one a stage, at 11-4 to Chapman. Greenside just kept drawing to pick up a four and bring it to 12-10, but two ends later, Chapman picked up a four and then a three to close the game out and win 21-13. ON TOP: Anne Chapman and Chris Dalzell won the Ellesmere juniors’ Champion of Champions titles. There were some excellent bowls played over the morning and no doubt we will see these names again. SPORTS In Brief HOCKEY OPEN DAY The new Waikirikiri Sports Club will hold an open day at Rolleston’s Foster Park on Sunday. It has been set up to foster hockey in eastern Selwyn, but the intention is for the club to eventually include other sports which are currently not widely available in Selwyn. Junior hockey teams up to under-13 level are expected to be entered into this year’s Canterbury Hockey winter competition.
