The Canterbury wide fire restriction was imposed by the National Rural Fire Officer under section 20 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act on 16th February 2017 due to the Port Hills fire. Notice is hereby given that from the 3rd day of March 2017, the Prohibited Fire Season imposed for the Burnham, West Melton Rifle Range and Tekapo Military Training Area Defence Rural Fire Districts on Monday 16th February 2017 has been cancelled and a Restricted Fire Season now applies. Every person commits an offence against the Forest and Rural Fires Act 1977 who sets on fire, or assists to set on fire, or causes to be set on fire, or aids, abets and assists in the setting on fire, in the “open air”, any vegetation or any other combustible material whatsoever except pursuant to the written permit from a Rural Fire Officer for the District. “Open air” in relation to fires means, otherwise than within an approved fireplace, incinerator, barbecue or any other such receptacle authorised by the Fire Authority. Any person seeking further information or wishing to light a fire in the open air within the Burnham, West Melton Rifle Range or Tekapo Military Training Area Defence Rural Fire Districts can apply for a permit from the 3rd Emergency Response Troop (Burnham Camp Fire Station) by phoning 027 671 2789 or 03 363 0067. A minimum of 24 hours notice is required for the issue of a fire permit. Note: Training Restrictions are still in force during this period. N.
