SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday March 21 2017 21 SPORTS UNDER PRESSURE: Weedons batsman Gareth Painter was judged not out in spite of a big appeal from Sefton players behind the stumps. THREATING: Sefton’s chief destroyer Ian King bowling to Brad Nightingale. Sefton add country title to silverware collection • By Tom Doudney SEFTON ARE triple crown winners after they beat Weedons in the country cricket two-day final on Saturday to complete a perfect season. The North Canterbury side, a dominant force for more than two decades, have a packed silverware cabinet after adding the CRV Ambreed Canterbury Country two-day trophy to their one-day and T20 titles. After day one was washed out last weekend, the game came down to a first innings shoot-out at Mainpower Oval. The day started ominously for Weedons, with captain Josh Watson being bowled by the competition’s star strike bowler Ian King in the first over. The Ellesmere side offered BOWLED ‘EM: Brad Nightingale had to go after the ball clattered into his stumps. some early resistance before King returned for his second spell. He ripped through the Weedons side with five more wickets, reducing the challengers to 68/9. Only a useful effort of 28 runs for the last wicket between Devon Nightingale and Fraser Austin stalled the misery. Fraser Sheat, who bowled without luck, and Matt Rowe backed up King with consistent pressure as Weedons were all over in 37 overs for 96. Austin dismissed Sefton opener Matt Laffey early but Lance Taylor was in no mood to be contained. When he reached an impressive run-a-ball century, his 166-run partnership with SNAPSHOT: Weedons batsman Matt Parker plays and misses. The ball went on to dislodge the bails, bringing an end to Parker’s stay at the crease. Tim Harrison was ended as the players shook hands to conclude the match. Sefton recognised King as their player of the season, with his 45 wickets eclipsing Canterbury stalwart Michael Sharpe’s record dating back to the 1990/91 season.
