There will be nine races on the card, with a combined stake total of $265,000. The day’s feature event is the $80,000 Valachi Downs Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes sponsored by Kevin Hickman, who has a close affinity with the Hororata area. This race has been upgraded to a Group 3 event, making it the most important race in the history of Horarata racing and one of the most prestigious races in the country. In additon to the high standard of racing, there will be plenty for families to enjoy, including picnic spots and a bouncy castle. Popular songstress Nyree Huyser will be back to entertain the crowds, performing in the birdcage between races. Racing starts around 12 noon, with the last race running just before 5pm. The club’s history The Hororata Racing Club was one of the earliest provincial clubs to be formed, with its first meeting held at Hororata on January 6, 1885. Run under the Canterbury Jockey Club (C.J.C.) rules, it was an eightrace programme for stakes of 135 sovereigns. The inaugural Hororata Cup, with a purse of 40 sovereigns, was won by Grand Duke owned by Mr T. Quill. After the first meeting at Hororata a return excursion train from Christchurch was put on, travelling to Coalgate with both horses and patrons, who then walked the few miles to and from the course. A ‘Ladies Bracelet’ race was run at the first meeting, and this was revived at the centennial meeting in 1984. Since that year, Petersens Jewellers of Bush Inn Centre have donated a gold bracelet for the race, which is usually for two or three year-olds. This year’s bracelet, the 34th, is attached to the race for two year-olds. After the first 80 years, the course needed extensive improvements and this, plus encouragement from the NZ Racing Conference for centralisation resulted in the club renting the Riccarton Racecourse for future meetings. The first meeting was held there in 1965. For the next 21 years Hororata retained its own secretary and independence, paying a rental fee to the C.J.C. for each meeting. By this time there were two meetings each year and on one occasion three, one of which struck a very wet day resulting in a serious financial effect. When the secretary retired in 1986, following discussion with the C.J.C. chairman and committee it was decided the Hororata Club would operate from the Riccarton headquarters with the C.J.C. as secretariat. By 2003, when the Canterbury Racing amalgamation between the C.J.C. and Amberley, North Canterbury and Hororata racing clubs and the Riccarton Turf Club took place, Hororata was a wellestablished segment of racing at Riccarton Park. Sponsor of the Valachi Downs Thoroughbreed Breeders Stakes, Kevin Hickman, addresses the crowds with 2012 race winner, Papilio, being paraded behind him. Nyree Huyser will be entertaining between races on Saturday. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www. .kiwi Tuesday March 21 2017 29 SOUTH ISLAND AGRICULTURAL FIELD DAYS Chairman’s welcome On behalf of the organising committee, it is a pleasure for me to welcome you to the 66th year of the South Island Agricultural Field Days (SIAFD), our second year at Kirwee. During the 2017 field days you can expect to enjoy our ever-growing demonstration displays including silage and beet harvesting, as well as our usual demonstrations and a new initiative, lifestyle exhibits the whole family can enjoy. We are thankful to the many SIAFD supporters and community. While too many to mention individually, we would like to pass on our thanks to our neighbour Tony Redmond who has been a massive help to us. Without the Voluntary Committee of the SIAFD none of this would be possible and it is with heartfelt thanks to them that we can continue to produce the SIAFD.
